Is this a good price for and lcd tv?

I guess it's alright; it's definitely a good size for $800, but I haven't been keeping up with TV deals, so I can't say if better stuff has been popping up.

If you are using it for gaming, I'd definitely take some time to consider other options; you'd have to be careful with the Plasma, and have to "break it in" for at least a couple hundred hours. 720p also has the potential to suck at 50 inches, unless you're sitting far away from the screen.

Lastly, LCD and Plasma TVs are not the same thing

Plasma is not LCD.

It depends on what you want and when you want it. If you can't wait for something better, and you're dying for a big screen with 720p and you don't care 1080p, that may be a decent buy. Although I'd recommend hunting through amazon and wal-mart to see if they have better options in your price range.

After much patience and research, I purchased a top end 46" Samsung LCD (samsung and sony are generally the better LCDs, with higher contrast ratios) for $1000 during a sale.

So you can prolly do better than what you're looking at, but it will take research and patience. With a set budget, if you want to buy something this week, you'll wind up with limited options.

50" is well within the range that 1080p becomes noticeable, so limiting yourself to 720p at that size isn't a move I'd make.

Since OTA TV and cable TV are only 720p/1080i, the only things that would feed it 1080p content would be:

* BluRay player
* PS3 or Xbox 360 gaming console
* PC

Since you want to use it for gaming, I'd suggest taking the splurge on a 1080p set, though you probably want to drop down to a 46"/47" set. Also, how far away is the TV going to be? That would influence how big of a set you'd want to look at.

I just bought this Panasonic plasma on Amazon for $764.00 shipped. 1080p, 3 HDMI inputs, and 42''. I love it so far and games look amazing. I usually watch a ton of sports (hockey and baseball) so the fast moving images during a hockey game and the colors in a baseball game made me buy the Panny plasma.

8-10 feet away..

whats wrong with a plasma for gaming? I thought those Tvs were better for gaming then LCD because of the faster refresh rate..
I use a 46inch plasma for gaming which i bought last year and there is no burn in.

compusa.com has lcd's on sale from time to time (a 42" toshiba rez for 750). the plasma's seem to have the better contrast and refresh vs. lcd. to match that you need to step up to the led lcd's and drop some cash. i'd poke around at the stores, seeing a great price online without seeing the tv in person to check out the screen and how it really displays is just a bad idea IMO

i think the "plasma isn't good for gaming" is a holdover from years ago. But with anything related to HD sets, you'll find polar opposite statements in any Internet thread it seems. For every "you'll want 120hz for an LCD," you'll get a "120hz will actually make your games look more blurry."

For every "you'll need to break in a plasma for couple hundred of hours before you can actually use it" there'll be someone who says "i never did that and don't have any problems."

FWIW, I bought a cheap plasma two years ago and never had burn in. I do experience image retention, but that's only noticeable during load screens or when it's otherwise black, and it goes away after a bit of normal viewing.

You can also try comparing the expert ratings for various brands and read the expert reviews as well. That's a good way to get inform about certain products and makes you choose the best LCD TV for your budget. Just a suggestion.
P.S. I know plasma T.V.'s aren't really great for gaming but i thought it might be worth buying?
Nothing wrong with Plasma for gaming. I have a Panasonic (though not your model, this is my model) and I really love it. My only issues is its:

Too Dark (a rarity for HD TVs; especially LCDs) on its native settings for my PS3 so I had to adjust it. (Very, very minor)

And the big 'flaw' with Plasmas TVs anymore...

Its got a glass screen and you'll get massive glare if you put it in a room with a lot of lights... So if you cannot control the lighting in your room you'll be better off going with an LCD.

If you have to go LCD you'll probably want a 120 hz. 240 hz will probably be out of your price range.

Lastly, don't forget to look at contrast ratio. If its low. It's crap.

You'll see better contrast ration in Plasmas than you will in LCD (even LED LCDs) as that's where Plasmas really really shine. (They still have the best picture bar none and I consider myself lucky that my 'man cave' has no windows and I could do anything I wanted in regards to what type of set to get.)

PS You might not want to shop at a big box chain... (Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc.) and instead look online at a retailer you trust (newegg, amazon) as you'll find a better selection and more than likely a better price.

I really thought I was going to get a TV from Best Buy. They had nothing for me.
