It's Tax Season! How much do you owe Uncle Sam? How much does he owe you?!
The fairtax regressive consumption tax is a pants-shittingly stupid idea of monumental proportions, supported by wealthy people who want to pay less in taxes and shoulder the burden onto working-class folks, but are unwilling to come out and admit as much.
I am not someone to force my opinions on others. And I will not in this case either. I believe in what the FairTax could do for me (the working-class folk). And I think others should at least take the time to look into it and form their own opinion.

But I will finish by saying, you apparently do not understand the ideas of the FairTax and I urge you to read the book before making such an ill-informed statement.

Joking about what??? The amount or what we're gonna do with it?? Wife last year (not married yet) claiming one kid got back $4,000. Now we're filing together and have another kid. Are we wrong to expect more back?!? And yes those are our plans with the $$$

I'm a student and a dependent who worked part-time/seasonal last year from August till around November. I get $16 I think--it's within a dollar or so. :)

Both. You have a low income, yet you're getting an amount back that most people who make 6 figures are lucky to get back. I consider you very fortunate there. I've seen some articles/stories so far this tax season and they're saying the amount of credits that low income earners get are way up.

And yes, it's just my opinion, but if I was a low income earner and I had two children, I wouldn't spend nearly 6k on things like boobs or a television. I'd save some in the bank for an emergency or put some away for my children. Not forcing my views on you, just stating what I personally would do.

I got back almost $3000 when I got my first real job after grad school. I did not claim the right withholdings and almost got penalized by the gov't for getting too much of a refund.

My wife has been self conscious her whole life about her chest so I said this year she could get it done around tax time and have claimed/budgeted our payrolls to try to have some savings AND a large tax return {a happy wife is a happy life}. We had our emergency money but my 3 yr. old had some major dental work done last week that sucked that almost dry and my 9 month old is sucking the rest for his surgery in May. So we decided to treat ourselves now and just start the emergency fund over again.

Maybe it's just Wisconsin, or the area we live in, or the tax credits from the kids, but yeah we should make out alright. Every penny throughout the year goes to supporting my family, so I just wanted a new toy if there was the money to do so.

I understand your point 100%. Just felt attacked for being a shitty person which I'm not at all. Just wanted to explain/defend my self, sorry for the posts y'all.

My intention wasn't anything like that. I was/am just simply amazed you were getting that much back and were a low income earner.

My local paper ran a story yesterday, stating that several tax preparers were commenting on how big refunds were for some individuals this year. Checks for upwards of 8-9k for people who barely paid that much in to the system.

Guess I missed that boat lol Wife and I both work for non profits (church and a radio station) and it looks like we might OWE $1,000

Yay us!

Filed my taxes today. First time ever, horay!

I'm a REALLY low wage earner, lol. I'm only getting back what the government took in the first place.

$1240 from the feds, $520 from MD.

Im not sure what I should do this season.

I wasnt officially employed all last year. Hospital I worked at laid me off when they merged with another hospital and even fucking white castle wouldnt hire me so I basically last year was doing computer/electronic work for myself.

So I am not sure what to do about my taxes, I dont want to get audited from not filing but I dont have any w2's.

Um ...

Is there any record that you received money from your home business, unemployment or severance?

Did you spend and save any money in such a way that it is noticeable (ie. credit card payments, mortgage or savings account in your name)?

Installing Turbo Tax right now. First year doing it this way, is it generally a painless process with TT? We don't do anything fancy, bought a house this year and my wife has some stock, but other than they we're pretty vanilla with taxes.

id say use Tax Act over TT since its only like $13 with State and it's always matched up number wise when i tried comparing to TT/TC

Well shit, just did the federal and we got almost $6000 back. Yay refundable education credit and making work pay credit. Also this was the first year for married filing jointly and we were in the earnings/tax brackets that got us a big tax break.

I ended up using the Turbo Tax Deluxe to file my taxes, both state and federal (I did it for state since I was a bit lazy to mail it in, even if I had to pay a fee). I only worked half the year making money (and I was a partial year resident in a new state). I got back just over $300 in state (yeah, sucky, but at least I don't owe anything. State still kept a TON of my taxes since I get taxed heavily for where I live), and around $2600 for federal. Keep in mind I'm single, did not really have any deductions, credits, student loans, or whatever to give me a larger refund. Mostly just going to save the money.

Surprised you got that much - I usually owe the state a couple bucks (from interest) since normal fed deductions don't apply to state taxes.

I am going to end up getting back slightly less that I thought. $1530 federal and $61 state. It's mainly because I paid less interest on my school loans this year than last year.

Question. In the past for my taxes, all I ever had was a W-2 form or two to fill out, but this year with my taxes being more complicated, I can't go through him and I don't want to do them myself as I know I'll screw up (I can claim a lot of gas mileage thanks to my delivery job). What I'm wondering is, what's a good business to go down to for my taxes? I'm aware there's Liberty Tax and HRBlock (among others), but what would be the best one as far as accuracy and such is concerned. Also, wondering what prices would be to get my taxes done.
