As the topic title says I've got a few questions about playing the PSP on a television. I already know that the slim ones can do it (2000 and 3000 models) and that you can hook the system up via composite or component cables. However I was wondering if you guys could answer some other questions about the subject?

1. When you play on an LCD TV does it fill the entire screen? I've seen videos of people playing and some are full screen and others aren't. Does it have anything to do with the resolution of the TV (720p vs 1080p)?

2. How is the quality of the picture on the TV? Is it pretty much identical to the PSP or does it lose some of the quality when being displayed on a television? Also, is there a difference in quality between 2000 and 3000 models? I heard about an interlacing issue with the 3000 models' screens, but does that happen on the TV screen as well?

3. Can you hook up a PS3 controller to the PSP and use that to control the PSP games you're playing? I've heard supposedly that only works on the PSP Go's, but I was curious if it might also work on the slim models of the PSP.

I don't really care about playing on the system's screen itself (as I wouldn't be using it as a portable gaming system really and the screen is too small for me) and I don't need to use it as a portable music/video device either. I'm just interested in hooking it up to my TV to play. I know that sounds strange, but the PSP has quite a few games I'd really like to play that just aren't on the PS3 (or PS2 for that matter).

Not sure about Question #3. But to answer #1 and #2...

#1 - PSP 2000 - PS1 games fill the entire screen and PSP games do not...

#2 - PSP 3000 - No interlacing issues on the big screen, but I never noticed the problem on the small screen either... Picture quality suffers a slight bit, more so with movies than games. And even then depends on file size, picture resolution (480x272 looks better, and you can get DVD quality 720 on the PSP as well...)

Does that help?

AFAIK, Resistance: Retribution is the only PSP game that supports a PS3 controller regardless of what PSP model you are using. It was called "PSP Plus" and requires Resistance 2 for PS3.

In every other instance, the use of a PS3 controller to control a PSP game is a PSPgo-only feature. The PS3 controller and PSPgo are linked together, but requires a PS3 to initially set-up.

It's not worth playing your psp on TV or LCD.

The resolution isn't that great since it's uses the psp resolution. You will see a lot of black bars. If your playing the games on full screen, your probably stretching video, which cause quality to get even worse. The only advantage is that some people don't like squinting a small screen and they prefer the big screen. I mostly use the black bar for picture and picture. I think you need component cables in order to work. I heard a lot Amazon complaints that composite cables won't display the images. You can also use a 3rd party program called Remote Joy. But you need custom firmware to install that.

You can use ANY cables with a PSP-3000 and play EVERY GAME (PS1, PSP, etc.) on your TV. Screen quality is pretty good IMHO.

I never looked into this, but, I think this would get me to play my PSP a bit more. Just can't seem to get myself to game on a handheld...I do have poor vision, which might be a reason. My DS and PSP sit and collect dust.

So, does Amazon have the best price on the component cables? Looks like $14.31 with them. Any better deal?

I actually see users on eBay selling for $5 with a couple bucks shipping. May go that route (since they look like first-party cables).

Gamestop is over 60 miles round-trip for me, and my local K-mart almost certainly wouldn't have them.
Also note that it won't work on an SDTV, even if it's hooked up through component cables. It only works on an HDTV.
Not exactly. Games work on SDTV's that can output 480 progressive. UMD movies work with as low as composite.

I believe you're talking about dl'd movies on PSP memory stick. Picture quality for actual UMD movies is excellent, basically DVD quality, much better than how PSP games look on tv. I don't remember for sure but I also think UMD's fill the entire tv screen, while games do not.
