Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Nice, I already did my preorder at BB for XCX.

Physical version of Fuga: Melodies of Steel trilogy coming to Switch

I feel silly having to research what this even is given that I own Solotorobo from back when GS was getting rid of copies. Pretty cool they are all getting physicals. I watched a review of the first one and it seems pretty solid with a variety of things to do. Made a note of it in my game tracking document where I'm also tracking my purchases for the year. I went ahead and set the demo for the first game to download to my switch. Will check it out soon.

Look man, I asked you years ago and never got a hard answer: can I have some money??

Hopefully a fellow cag gets some use out of this extra psn voucher.

Wow - that's a remake alright. Looks solid. I don't care whether I get an import or NA release. It really comes down to price and if one version is more complete or patched on disc than the other.

2 for $100 Lunar new year sale on Play-Asia. This is just a way to save a few bucks mainly. Ninja Gaiden Black 2 which is in the sale is already $49.99 so that's just one to add if you really need it. I'm looking for something to pair with the Venus Vacation Prism: Dead or Alive Xtreme PS5 pre-order.

Oh, thanks for that. I looked the other day and didn't see them listed. I take it you went with individual releases instead of the box set. Probably the direction I'll go once I play the demo for the first one and find out if these games are for me.
If you want the big set, Amazon.jp is the cheaper option. Since I have points to spend on PA, with a 5% discount coupon, its cheaper for me to grab them there.

I have about $7 in coins on PA. Might be a nice way to use them. Thankfully there's time. But I bookmarked the page to remind myself to check it and make a decision.

God damn it, Woot, don’t bring back the Unicorn Overlord CE. Didn’t I question my life choices enough when you had it up the first time?

Cool Video Game Deals Woot

Same old stuff usually and some discounts on probably not NA Switch releases. The sale ends on February 3 at 11:59PM CT.

I never know when to pull the trigger on NIntendo's NS games... I don't think I bought any this year year, still hoping for $30 on Luigi 2 HD, Peach, Brotherhood by end of the year but guessing that might not happen if NS2 launches and demand will continue to remain for NS games.

$30 is my buy point for games I'm interested in first party. Usually $40 or a tiny bit less is what a lot of these seem to get stuck at. Some like the the Princess Peach game are more for $25 or even $20 (not super interested). $40 does seem to be the spot for ESRB copies the first few years or so :( . For non ESRB I think $30 is the price point, though many of their say Japanese releases are the same exact game except for different cover arts. Woot sells some ones with possibly French or Spanish on it for some reduced price.

Cross posting from Steam forum:

Harumade, Kururu. AKA Harukuru. - Spring has come true? - is coming to Steam on February 14th only censored as Sekai Project is still in negotiations for 18+ content. To add to that there will be a 17+ patch for risque content that was removed. First of all I will likely not touch this unless this has the full 18+ content, as this looks like a comedy nukige, especially as the main characters are making a harem on a secluded island. Without the hentai content I'm sure this will not be a good visual novel.

I didn’t know this was reprinted. I wonder if it will tank the value of the original. Or if this has a different UPC or spine code.

It was reprinted a while ago, like a month ago at this point I think. Pretty sure it's the same but I'm curious if the DLC is still a code or if it's on disc, anyone know? Guessing it's still a code since apparently Sony makes this an added hurdle to put stuff on disc or something.

Yeah I'm likely getting that $60 set. Got the original on Switch discounted, and I'll likely donate/sell that one away and get the cool plush and PS5 version. I'm also thinking of the otome Genso Menagerie or whatever it is. Half off is pretty good. Along with the B-something one half off (this one the demo bored me though), that's not too bad.

Genso Manege isn’t releasing until 1/31 so you are probably looking at Celestial Chain of Fate which I saw in the Woot sale. I wouldn’t recommend it because it has a ridiculous number of choices you have to make. 20 chapters and 360 choices. It is a port of a mobile game so they had all those choices to drag out gameplay.

Ooph 360 choices is a bit much. I've heard the story and characters are shallow too, which is why I didn't buy it on release (generally buy most visual novels around release to support them). Thanks for the opinion for sure. There is a lot of games releasing nowadays, so wasting time/money on bad/mediocre ones is generally not my style anymore.

Unfortunately it’s a slog with that many choices. And then the kicker is that the story isn’t even complete at the end of it. They are working on a second part for Japan, but no word on whether it’ll be localized.

Let us know what you think of it when it comes in. I'm considering it as well despite owning the original nsw release. Like most woot items, I usually feel like I need to wait for one of their occasional windows of extra % off promo. This sometimes means I miss things that sell out though.

If you like artbooks, the Switch LE came with one, but the PS5 LE doesn't, so you might want to take that out before getting rid of the Switch set.

I feel like I need the extra % off for ordering Switch first party games. Maybe around $44 excites some people but for me it sure doesn't especially since it likely isn't an ESRB release. Also for stuff like Reyvantis (just feels like a $25 or less title to me especially after the lukewarm demo).

The thing the Raincode PS5 edition has going for it is that the 4 DLC episodes are included.

I just want Level 5 to release anything at this point. I want Professor Layton the most, but so many of these games have been delayed multiple times now. The sad thing is we likely have to get Asian-English copies or Japanese copies with English subtitles to get physicals nowadays.

I have no idea what's going on with Level-5, they are all over the place. Inazuma Eleven was supposed to come out in 2018 and it's still not out. DecaPolice got delayed several years. They completely dropped Yokai Watch when it seemed to be picking up steam. Plus they had the Ni no Kuni NFT mobile game and out of nowhere announced a remake of the first Inazuma Eleven game.

Don't get me wrong, I love their games, but they seem like they're just winging it in the worst way.

I just picked up both MegaMan X Legacy Collection 1&2 and Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection for an all-time low of $21.50 apiece. Looks like I'm still missing Mega Man Zero/Zx Legacy Collection from the series of releases.

I don't know what is wrong with us. Guess we're just so desensitized to sales and things being available all the time. Can't believe I didn't pick theses titles up already. If they suddenly when OOS this week, everyone would be hunting them hard.

The all-digital future has really morphed our perspectives, and priorities. This place is totally different than it was just 5 years ago. You can't go wrong picking up any great games like this for a $20 spot. But we are also spending more in other areas, like digital add-ons we feel we need to buy.
