Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

"Fake" or "Bootleg" is a harsh word but I dont like the practice. It sounds too much like using a VPN to buy games from Argentina.
That said, to my knowledge, it's only first party Nintendo games where this happens on woot.

Yawn. The same user has posted the same fake games bit elsewhere. Apparently provoking reactions is how they derive entertainment. I'd recommend leaving leaving that ridiculous claim alone and enjoying your games.

Not all foreign PHYSICAL copies of switch games have the dlc locked by region but you have to know for sure before buying the physical copy. Like I think some of the Physical Trails series and Ys games from EU can use the US eshop dlc (here's a thread on reddit covering some).

I think the main issue being brought up though isn't about getting foreign copies, it's ordering a USA/CA ESRB copy and getting a different region copy. Kind of a bait and switch when they know it's a different region on it and show the wrong art work. I do care about that stuff myself but only because I want to get exactly what I ordered and not be product swapped.

The full list of S-E Amazon sale. Same exact prices and games at Target and Gamestop. There is also a very YMMV case that Target has FFXVI/Rebirth/Visions of Mana for clearance prices in store.

I looked through that list this weekend, nothing for me and most prices were either the same or higher on stuff I already bought. I think in the end price wise it was kind of a wash except I didn't have to wait. I really lucked out finding a $20 copy of Star Ocean Second Story R on switch. I'm somewhat tempted on Romancing SaGa 2. They did a much better job on the 3D engine for that one and the demo was decently fun. BUT, I feel like if I pass on it that I'll be fine... so I'm holding out for $20-$25. I'd take a copy on the cheap but I don't "need" it.

I'm super anal about always wanting the standard ESRB US release whenever that option is available... unless an import copy has more content on disc/cart.

But calling legitimate imports fake is ridiculous.

I'm finally doing it. After 4-5 years of quitting and picking it back up again I finally made it through Trails of Cold Steel 1 and am enjoying my time immensely with #2! I'm on a roll now and finally cruising through it. been listening to the CD soundtracks while I play MtG Arena or clean the house.

I really wanted to get to some modern QoL and engine upgrades with the PS5 version of 3&4. That's been one of the primary motivators. The problem for me was that 1 was a slog with all the school time exploration at Thor's.

Absolutely love these editions of the games. Wish we received more products like this. They are perfect. I'm probably going to forgo some purchases in either Feb. or March and invest in a bunch of plastic protector cases. For steelbooks, BD anime volumes, and a few big box ones like these. They are expensive, but it's something I've needed to do for a long time. Don't wanna be afraid to open and enjoy my stuff.

The OSTs in those games contain incredible work. One detail in those tracks that I love is how the various members of the Falcom Sound Team pay homage to each other's work. I'm going to nerd out a bit and point out an example from of those tracks:

First, one of the biggest themes of Cold Steel is founded on a track from Sky the 3rd's OST, The Final Choice. It starts at the 30:30 mark of this cutscene (which is largely spolier-free and recommended for people who are playing CS).
-Anyway, there is an obvious reappearance of this theme in a few different instances in CS I-IV when an similar setting develops.
-But also with this theme in mind, listen closely to the Heimdallr track in CSI. Familiar percussion kicks in around 0:30 and at 1:15 the Final Choice melody makes a cameo. That my friends is a leitmotif.

Update on the Lunar Remaster. No CE planned, but the physical copies also won't be limited. Win some, lose some I guess; I still like this approach better than going through a limited print publisher.

I'm a stickler for ESRB copies mainly for Nintendo first party titles. I know it's cheaper to get either Japanese copies (these mostly release with English nowadays) or other copies (the discount on these I don't feel is enough). Everything else though unless it's specific localization NA copies I want, I'm okay with imports and Asia-English copies. To me if it plays in English I'm usually okay overall, but I wouldn't overspend for non NA first party Switch titles at least.

It isn't to incite anything... I've been collecting games for 25 years. If it isn't a legitimate US/NA copy, I label it as fake. You may believe it to be valid for your collection, I do not. Same goes for tech equipment sold in the US where the supply source is outside the US. There is no warranty and it's labeled a 'gray market' item. I'll still label that as a fake product. Or let's agree to disagree and call it a knock off.

Is the "lose some" referring to the no CE part? I guess it's not too surprising since Grandia didn't have... I'm just glad they said it's not limited and I'll prob buy it day one anyway.

Yeah, the old Lunar releases were really memorable packages with some cool stuff and Vic Ireland mentioned wanting to do something like that again for the re-release. Vic Ireland (the guy who was behind those releases) even came out of wherever he's been for the past ten years to talk about wanting to do stuff for it. But it seems like Gung-Ho just wants to do a standard release. Which is fair enough.

Hm. I'm starting to think you don't know what those words actually mean.

The words can be a bit direct or ‘on the nose’. As I said, for me they’re a knock off. I do collect North American and also JP games, as long as they never made it to the US.

When I was recently in Japan I was excited to find EDF6 for PS5 new/sealed in Hiroshima.

Part of me thinks the no CE is because:
Vic Ireland can go suck an egg.

I give Vic credit for bringing over all those niche games in the 90s and early 00s, but the guy does seem like a prick and prob had some stupid requests/demands.

Everything you are saying is nonsense. A "knock off" is something that is produced by a third party without the consent of the owner of the rights to whatever it is. Games from other regions are not knock-offs, they are original, licensed versions often published by the same company. You can choose not to buy them or collect them, but there is nothing "grey market" or unlicensed about them, nor are they "knock offs". Words have defined meanings and all you are doing is misusing language to make some ridiculous point.

I didn't realize he was that rich.

Not sure anyone remembers but right after WD went under, he used to sell brand new/sealed copies of PS1 games (and I think maybe WD releases from PS2 and Saturn as well?) on eBay and he offered to sign them if the winner wanted. Back then, I didn't have the money for them but man I would have loved to own one of those (at the time, I had no clue that he was such a tool but even if I did know, I'd still want to have one).

You can have your opinion and I will have mine. No collector is going to say “please do send me the UAE version!”. And I could be wrong, though international / grey market games can even have different trophy and achievement lists.

I just went through a mild ordeal with the game tracking app gameeye. I purchased a new game for PS5 and their database said the UPC didn’t exist. What I found out was I was sold an imported edition. Which dlc could not working correctly or not at all. I was able to return it and purchase a ‘white market’ or local copy in the US.

Woot says overstock items often from outside the USA. that is literally the definition of what grey market items are. I’d love for the topic to get back on track and only posted to warn others that they will not receive a ‘real’ USA / North American copy.

Interesting, it was between this and Yakuza series for me to start trying to make progress on one of the daunting series I have all of but have played just a few. I went with Yakuza series. Already had played 0 and Kiwami 1, just beat Kiwami 2, almost through 3. The games are Fun, I like the humor in all of them. The biggest drag is that 0-Kiwami 2 use the same areas. I’m already tired of running back and forth the same few blocks by the end of 1 game, but 3 games, and i‘m sure many more for Kamurocho at least, ughhh. I like that 3 finally added a new area, even if the graphics took a hit going back to the original versions now. Doing some side content, but probably not going to do too much between 3-5.

Any experts know of side content I should try to make sure I do? I really like how even some of the small side stories carry over between games. Thanks to the fans that kept this series alive. I remember hearing it was probably pretty close to cancellation more than once. I still think I would have rather seen where Shenmue could have gone, and like that setting more than the gangsters theme, but Yakuza series is very unique and the more recent entries sound fantastic. Still enjoying the older ones, but most looking forward to getting to the newer ones. You really do have to play them all though, to follow the story and characters.

I’d love for the topic to get back on track

Would you? Because the only way I see that happening soon is if you drop it. While I understand your perspective, and you’re correct about the standard definition of grey market (although it has largely adopted a slightly different definition on CAG), you’re absolutely the one who’s persisting in agitating this argument by continuing to (mis)use the terms “knockoff” and “fake.”

Knockoffs are products made in imitation of a better known product by a different manufacturer, with the implication that they’re inferior; a fake, as applies to a product, is likewise an imitation made by a third party. Neither of these definitions apply to officially licensed games, regardless of where they were manufactured or intended to be sold. You don’t have to be interested in buying video games from alternate regions; you can even warn people that they’re not from the region they might expect. That being said, using terms like knockoff to describe them (a) is incorrect, and (b) has clearly proven to be inflammatory.

I’m kind of amazed at the passion and commitment on display with both sides of this argument.

Me too!

I’m looking forward to the Suikoden remaster coming out next month. Currently playing astrobot and there’s a reference in it! Up next I’m most likely going to play Sea of Stars. I was going to start it last year though I read the November update was a huge QoL change.

I don't preorder from Amazon anymore if i actually want to play something near release. I never get games near launch from them and the last few titles that I ordered (which were first party Nintendo and 1 trails game) I didn't get till a month after. The latter they sent to the wrong address to add insult to injury so I had to go pick it up at a Amazon pickup station in a whole foods 20 something minutes away instead of the ones near me.

my Trails from Daybreak 2 preorder from Amazon now has an estimated delivery date of March 3rd, ugh

My Bestbuy.com preorder of the switch standard version hit my CC on Monday and it's preparing to ship by Friday. I know not everyone has a great BB situation where they live (and I don't have a store nearby) but they've done great for me over the last few years either delivering the day before release or at worse the day after release. Though I do only order standard copies. I also had a $5 cert that I was able to use on the preorder so I saved a few bucks. I pretty much stopped ordering from Amazon except on very rare occasions. Like woot and some other places I don't like the idea of gambling on getting region swapped games. I'll go BB every time first for the few series I preorder and anything I can wait on, I'll either get at BB on sale or will get at Gamefly used since used there is pretty much new.

The only other preorder I have is for Xenoblade Chronicles X next month. I'm currently waiting on a deal for Tales of Graces f remaster and will probably add Bakeru to that list when the physical drops in a few weeks. $40 isn't bad, but I know Tales games always dip into the $20's. So I'll wait. Bakeru, I may change my mind on and just grab a copy as I enjoyed the demo more than most people (I did love the N64 Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon)... but right now, it might be a good option for gamefly or if BB or someone reliable has a sale.

I generally pre-order from Best Buy and sometimes Target. I just try not to support Amazon more than I need to now. They are not the place to go to for first party Nintendo games (if they even get them) and their niche game allotment has been pretty poor lately too (one game took about a week and a half because of stock).

Unfortunately retail is on the way out as far as gaming is concerned. target and best buy stores have downsized their gaming aisle, and it’s on the pathway of the BD/4K movies. soon amazon will be the only option.

It’s why I’m stocked up on PS4/PS5 discs nowadays. I’m not going down the rabbit hole of a digital future. Hell, with my backlog of games (and whiskey collection), I’m set for multiple lives.

As far as pre-ordering, I firmly believe every game is broken at launch anymore and won’t touch anything for six months post launch. I always wait for QoL fixes or a major 1.1 update.

I ended up getting Sea of Stars PS5 at Target. It was on sale during Black Friday but now sold out just about everywhere online (best buy, gamestop, amazon, Target, VGP, amazon)

I'm just glad we have at least this next gen of Nintendo with the Switch 2. It might end up my last true console pending what Nintendo does after that. There's also the disc ps5 which I think is a great option as well but I have doubts about PS6.

As I keep saying as a joke and as a truth consoles are becoming PCs which are becoming consoles. In the end digital will take over and games will be on everything and not as many exclusives.
You will own nothing and you will like it.

I'm glad to hear someone else feels what I've been feeling for awhile now.

not just your last true console, but possibly thee last true console. We're going to be able to buy and collect for NSW2, and own carts that do 4K + HDR.

I'm not even some huge Nintendo fan; think I played my Switch for only 90 hours last year. I recognize that this was a massive failure of a generation for both Sony and MS. Including few first party and big games, as well as slowly taking away our ownership rights, and then blaming that on us.
Everything we want is ccoming to last-gen and existing hardware. like Lunar remasters, Dragon Quest 1&2, Suikoden 1&2. We aren't getting even modern gaming experiences, let alone "next gen". I don't see a single reason most people should want to buy a next-gen PS or Xbox, and that's not something I have ever felt before. I'm not going to sit here and be gaslighted over failed service games. and most all of western gaming going into Pig Mode. Why should anyone want to buy a new system? These guys had everything going in their favor during the pandemic (2020-), and they all blew it with complacency. If exclusives go away, then so does our need for you. Same with game ownership; you're just a worse Steam, with more paid gatekeeping. Is Sony really just going to walk out into the ocean? It doesn't seem like they even recognize their market position slipping away. Once they realize, it's already too late.

We don't need better graphics. We need solid game development. Sega, Atlus, Capcom, SquareEnix, and Nintendo are delivering it in spades.

It's not that different from Big Tech telling us all that we NEEEED AI. It's the future. well yeah. it's the future for your business of being 'first to market', and owning and controlling everything? Consumers certainly don't need any of it. In fact it only harms us.

It's like when all the grocery stores took away the cashiers and did self checkout, subsequently removed self checkout bc it wasn't working, and then they never went back and hired more cashiers again. Just "the customers were stealing too much," as if that was our fault. While they try to profit harder off some failure of a financial forecast model. For five years I've been told, "we can't hire cashiers; no one wants to work!" as 50 employees push ISPU carts around the store. like ok? We can all just stop going to your grocery store then... If you don't want to be in the business of operting a grocery store.

It's the exact same thing with vg consoles. Make everything suck. fail to support your buiness partners. and then blame everyone but yourself for "Zero growth".

There's a lot of growth happening at indie and AA space within the JRPG, and related, communities, that you don't really need a high end machine to play the latest "hype" games.

Maybe it's just the circles I'm in, but I've heard more about Sea of Stars than Final Fantasy 16.

And something like Metaphor could easily scale down, as the art style carries it farther.

The return on investment on more powerful (and power hungry) hardware is getting less and less needed. Efficiency gains are great, but won't sell new consoles for the most part.

Given the absolute crap show that is PC hardware regarding GPUs right now, consoles focusing on value would be the smartest thing. But in reality, they'll see the floor rising on PC gaming, therefore they can hike prices, too.

I always feel like it's hyperbole to say "this is my last new generation," but the PS5s I have feel almost needless. If my PS4 Pro was still around, I might have just kept that and bought a bigger GPU and called it day.

Technology advancements should be coming from doing things smarter now, since we're reaching the limits of physical production and are just solving the problem with more and more transistors on a die.

TL;DR: I Want Shorter Games With Worse Graphics, Made by People Working Sustainably, and I'm Not Kidding...

... Which would likely result in getting off the new hardware treadmill altogether.

I mostly agree but Spider-Man 1, 2, and Miles were just so.damn.pretty. at 60 fps. And there were some really great set pieces during Final Fantasy 16 (and it’s probably controversial to say but it was probably one of (if not) my favorite Final Fantasy games) but yeah Sea of Stars was really great also, and I’ve sunk more time into Balatro and Slay the Spire than probably any other game I own.

It’s not just about graphics though, I absolutely loved Baldurs Gate 3, probably a top 5 game of all time for me, and I played it mostly on Steam Deck with a lot of the performance/graphics turned all the way down. That’s a game that just doesn’t strike me as feasible on Switch hardware, and maybe not even Switch 2 (oh lawdy will I buy it again day 1 if it does come to Switch 2 though).

But like I said, for the most part, I tend to agree, throwing a bunch of graphical performance at a game doesn’t inherently make it better and I really wish Ubisoft, EA, and some others would realize that. Dead Space remake didn’t underperform because it was a bad game, it underperformed because the only new thing it had to offer really was graphics improvement.

Given the higher demand for physical products in Japan, I think Nintendo's next system after Switch 2 will still have physical games. But others? Probably not. Especially as their markets have shrank so much, they may not even be making consoles in 9 years. Xbox Series X/S are down to like 30million systems sold which is 2x the Vita (at 15million). The vita, which had only a few years on shelves before stores stopped stocking systems and worked to eliminate the games. PS5 is only at 60 million. Meanwhile Switch is at 150 million. This isn't about console wars, just reality of a shrinking market.

My big thing though isn't as much this could be the last true console... it's just life is changing as I'm getting older. If Switch 2 lasts 9 years, I'll be 60 and retired when the Switch 3 happens (if it happens). I'm not sure I'm going to have the desire to game as much as I thought I would when I was younger. I really don't play a lot year to year. I can barely focus on anything but one system at a time. My PS4 collection, I've not even played a single game in it. Which I only went for key series I love like Yakuza, Shenmue, Gravity Rush, inFamous, and a few other things here and there. It's probably under 20 games total. Switch 2, I'm going to likely be just about as restrictive as I was with PS4... except, I do love japanese games so ... some of those will creep into the collection. I just know at some point I'm going to break and realize I have to just stop buying stuff... or I need to sell most everything and just live in the day to day with gaming and buy stuff when I'm ready to play it and stay focused on the now and not building up a collection or chasing deals for things I'd like to play.

Sorry for the tangent, but I want to talk anime for a second. I finished Golden Time late Friday night, and holy molly did that hit me in the midlife feelings over and over and over. I don't think anythings ever really choked me up and brought me to near tears quite like that. Not just the story but the real life parallels to getting old and examining life. Normally I'm more into action stuff, spy, thieves, big robots, mech suits, sometimes sports, anything with space travel... with Lupin the 3rd and Cowboy Bebop being two of my favorite anime of all time... but the last six months since discovering the Hidive channel on my Tablo dvr, I've been sampling some of the other side. Run With The Wind was pretty excellent as well. I did that because I had finished the first series of Hijime no Ippo and wanting another sports themed anime. I think now I'm turning more to anime with maybe a slightly deeper message than just entertainment... and maybe pushing a bit more reality (though not against fantasy mixed in) and emotional investment. I wonder if this will lead me towards VN's next? :ROFLMAO: Seems like the next logical leap, though for the moment Golden Time has made me think more about downsizing and getting life simpler and more full of living and less screen time and less stuff to be responsible for.

Again sorry for the tangent, though if someone has a VN that may fit in with this weird midlife place I'm in, suggest away. I have a short list of other anime that sort of hit a lot of the same marks to watch that were recommended. Currently Watching My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU (not that it was recommended for this)... which has a lot of deep monologue introspective moments by the main character. It's a nice break from the emotional side of Golden Time. Probably going to do Clannad or Toradora (same writer as Golden Time) next and let one of them rip me back apart and put me back together a bunch.
