Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

My CEs gotta have:

1. steelbook

2. CD soundtrack

3. 1XX+ pg art book, other nice art extras, chipboard art box, etc

in that order of preference. If components are lower than that on the list then it is unlikely that I pick it up. Folded-up posters are -really- stupid. Expensive statues tend to be really dumb too, yet some of the cheap ones are very nice bargains.
steel book an art books are nice but I like things I will actually use the most.

Steelbooks and artbooks are always great. But my favorite type of CE extra has, unfortunately, become a rarity nowadays. I used to love when collector's editions would come with behind the scenes DVDs/Blurays showing how the game was made, including interviews with staff, voice actors, the director, etc.

They had a fantastic making-of features for the original Arkham Asylum and MGS4. The CE for MGSV had one too, but it was awful (all it included was a 30 minute collection of lame interviews with people talking about how iconic the games were...boring stuff).

The World of Final Fantasy CE looks decent. And I definitely like me some cute, super-deformed characters. But the shelf space in my house is finite, so I have to pick and choose my battles where CEs are concerned. And in this case bigger is not necessarily better.

I find myself regularly passing on CEs, and preferring to stick to more conventional releases. The odd steelbook is always appreciated, but those are the same size as the standard box, so they don't take up a lot of extra space.

No one acknowledged this when I brought it up, but why can't I scroll all the way down in DualShockers articles?
The only thing I could guess would be addons that block website elements. I have about an inch blocked at the very bottom of the page (strip with authors name and such blocks the bottom) because I don't have it enabled in NoScript, but it still shows the whole article and just blocks (some) comments below the article. You mentioned you were using Firefox before which I'm using the latest version of. Works fine using NoScript, Privacy Badger & uBlock Origin. If you're using Adblock Plus or uBlock, switch to uBlock Origin.

Thanks--I had Adblock Plus on, and switching to uBlock Origin worked. Is that generally better to use than Adblock Plus?

Got a question about DOAX3, now that you need to download the catalogue to get the dlc, I can't get the dlc swimsuits without an asian psn right? It was kinda nice getting the dlc outfits on vita without switching accounts. Guess that's the end of dlc outfits for me.

EDIT: it's probably not Generations 2. At the event before it was shown it was said this game is NOT a sequel to anything.

I just hope they fix the difficulty in 2017 from what they did in Generations. Generations was waaaaaay too easy. I got S ranks my first time through most of the levels.

Also interesting Sonic 2017 is going to be on NX.

Pretty much out of luck there pal

As long as it brings back the Boost Mechanic that Unleashed / Generations had I'll be happy.

Can some one please explain this? Have the game in my backlog for PS4. I have an asian account, but hoping to play on my US account. Will I still be able to use DLC costumes on my US account?

You should be fine. They were talking about the vita version where in order to switch accounts, you have to wipe out your system settings each time you switch, and would ideally also need 2 memory cards. Essentially it doesn't allow you to play on the US account if you want to use another region's DLC. Even if you don't mind playing on the other region's account, just switching is super inconvenient, takes time, and you lose data.

Thanks I figured that's what it was.

Finished ZTD finally.
I was pretty fucking mad when that platinum trophy popped after the last scene.

Just wanna let you know you've already missed a bunch of limited time dlc.

I was vaguely aware of that. It was all essentially paid dlc tho right? You needed a bunch of premium tickets which you can buy for a lot of money or grind a lot of hours? I don't know the mechanics of the game but Neither of those is possible for me at this point.

It's not really normal DLC, it was all in-game and called "Event" sets. Every 2 weeks 2 new sets of suits (9 colors each) are put in the Owner Shop. Vol.1 had 1 set you could only buy with Premium Tickets (real money) and was insanely expensive, and 1 set that you could buy with in-game money. There was a huge backlash over the insane price so every Event set has been purchasable with in-game money since, with a promise from TN that it will stay that way. Vol.1~6 were added with game updates so everybody got them, but now Vol.7~8 and up need Catalogs downloaded off the Asia/JP PSN which is why Vita users are out of luck unless already playing an Asian account.

The good news is that the old sets rotate back in alongside the newest sets so you actually haven't missed anything yet.

The other good news is that if you have a USB thumbdrive you can backup your save and hit the Casino to quickly get all the in-game money you want and purchase the limited-time suits to later give out when you have the time.

You can Google: 'gamecity doax3 event', to see the sets that have gone up so far with dates for what is currently up.

2 New Sonic games? just in time too! I picked up the DS Sonic collections for my 2DS :whistle2:

I never beat any of the sonic games so I figured I should get to it sooner rather than later.

Both Snow Mikus came in today, very excited about this :D/
If you own a Gamecube, PS2, or Xbox you'd be better off getting Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection instead. I'm not saying the DS Collection is bad but I tried it a few years back on my DS flashcard and it was missing options like the 2-Player mode and couldn't even input the Debug / Level Select / or Super Sonic cheats due to the Options menu being removed. The most annoying part of all is the Start button doesn't pause the game you literally have to tap that Sonic icon on the touch screen to pause it.

Apparently the Metroid game did not release last week. Looking forward to Shiren, but the rest doesn't really interest me this week. Nothing new popped up on PC last week either that I didn't list, which is rather rare. I do wish they would localize a Shining game that wasn't the fighter though.

Have we heard anything more about the 9/9/9 Vita/PC port since its initial tease? I searched around and couldn't find anything, but this thread is generally much more knowledgeable about the state of such things.
