Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Ugh, I think I just got the point in Ni No Kuni 2 where I just want to rush to the end and not touch it again. It started off great, and I was really enjoying it but after I got so far into the idling king building part of the game it is turned me off to the game. I literally spent most of my day idling this game to get bonuses. I actually think I like the first game much more.

I don't know how much longer I got but hopefully it's not too much longer.
The way to avoid this is to return to manage your kingdom every hour or so of regular gameplay. My kingdom is level 3 now, bringing in money at a solid rate and I have spent very little time intentionally idling.

I think I liked the first game better as well though. NNK 2 has the extra systems like crafting and cooking but they all seem to be superfluous since the game is very easy for the most part unless you intentionally fight enemies of a higher level. The side quests are about as dull as they come as well. Not looking forward to grinding all those out if I want the Platinum. It's a decent game but not GOTY material like I had hoped.

I don't think this is a price mistake since it's also up on the Switch eShop for free as well but:

Atelier Lydie & Suelle

PS4

- GUST Titles BGM Pack

- Atelier Series BGM Pack

Normally they have a few for free and then a bunch at a premium price. Since there are over 900 tracks between the two of them, I'd think they'd be premium DLC. So I'm listing these a little earlier than next week since they appeared today just in case.

Not quite what I started looking for, but close enough:

I hope his grand by phantasm is beheading her couldn't stand her in the anime.   Bonus at points if he uses her boyfriend to do it.

Cool thanks, I always kick myself when I miss out on dlc that is free for awhile before getting changed to Price.

For the Overwatch players the next event, Overwatch Archives (Previously known as Uprising), is going live next Tuesday. It will be available from April 10th to the 30th. Three weeks as per usual. The Uprising PvE game mode will be available in both types like last year, along with a new one called Retribution that focuses on Blackwatch. It will feature Genji, Moira, McCree and Reyes (Reaper).

This looks way better than the uprising event. I’m really looking forward to this. Hopefully I can get that Moira skin. :D

Slime Rancher is coming to PS4 with a physical edition this September. There will also be a physical edition coming to the Xbox One at the same time. For those of you who don't know, it left early access on PC in fall of last year and is pretty well regarded. The game is repetitive, but it's still an enjoyable relaxing time waster where you adventure, capture slimes and bring them back to your farm to breed them.

So I know this is the Japanese thread, but I thought you guys might like to know that the Spyro the Dragon original trilogy is finally getting a remastered collection. It’s called Spyro Reignited Trilogy and comes out September 21st for PS4 and Xbox.

I’ve been waiting a while for this and cannot wait to play it.

This is cool but I guess you meant to post this in the Indie/Limited/Obscure thread? I don't think this is a Japanese-made game, which is the point of this thread.
Nah, I meant this thread. It's loosely related and if all we talked about was only Japanese specific things then this thread would have quite a bit less in it. Granted, the thread has been slightly less active the last week or two.

The only thing that definitely doesn't really belong here at all which I talk about is Overwatch, but I try and keep that to a bare minimum to events and new playable characters. There was just previously a fair bit of talk about it in this thread in the past, which is why I keep it brief and mention those. Otherwise I'll add in things that draw inspiration from Japanese origins and genres that you commonly find in Japanese games.

For some reason Walmart has the Atelier Firis OST in stock on Google Express for $39.85 with free shipping.

Yeah I've seen them have random stuff like that sometimes. Saw a Fate Grand Order OST on walmart's site once. I think it's 3rd party sellers just putting stuff there.

Cyberdimension Neptunia 4Goddesses Online is today's StarDeal at Fanatical. $19.99

Lowest price it's been since it's release just a month ago.

Weekly releases for eroge, high profile VNs translations and other niche publishers VNS:

Nekonyansoft

I forgot about this company, but they released their first game Fureraba ~Friend to Lover~ . This is 100% vanilla and I have read that it has a slightly rough translation. Still it's not too expensive, and I want to support a new company by trying at least one of their games. It will be on Steam later. Note: If you purchase before 04/15/2018, when the mini fan disk comes out, it's yours to own as well.

Steam

VNDB (NSFW 18+)

Denpasoft

Denpasoft released the Bell Chimes For Gold. This is old school and looks like a simulation game where you pay off some debt of men in your life or something. Looks kind of neat. Also has a Steam version from Sekai Project.

Mangagamer

Mangagamer put on their website a game called Forest Fortress. It is animated, but supposedly not very good quality.

Steam (18+ patch available)

VNDB

Also I know I was going to give Side Boob game impressions, but honestly I'm not in the mood for the politics of the game. Doesn't help that Lute has a very set in his mind schedule for his harem, so the scenes are very boring and samey. I will finish it, but it's nowhere near as good as the first.

I don't know if anyone likes these posts, but I follow the eroge VNs and generally VNs in general, so I'm just getting out the news.

No real big releases that aren't ports. If you're on Xbox, I do recommend checking out Ys Origin. I'm interested to see how Meloncholy Republic turns out since it was a kickstarter game as well as how Regalia is received. Owlboy is alright, but not great.

Other stuff that released without warning last week or I overlooked it (Assume PC unless otherwise noted):

Well told myself I was done with Ni No Kuni 2 after I got the ending. Yeah, I wasn't done because I got the plat an hour ago. Luckily the last trophy didn't have as much grinding as I thought it would. Overall I loved the game, but it has it's share of flaws.

Good thing I never bought Hellblade. Bought it on Xbox so my GF can play it (she really wanted to play it) and I can backlog it.

Impressions of Fureraba after one full completed route:

First of all the art in this game is excellent. It's quite abundant, ladies have different outfits, and it's just well done overall.

The translation is okay for the most part. There is a lot of foul language and some maybe too slangy talk, and a little broken English, but overall it is readable.

The voice work is pretty excellent. Even some minor characters are voiced, which is nice. The music is kind of basic and generic, but the piano used for the more emotional scenes is good.

The main character is very silly and kind of dumb, but he is not that bad, and knows better than to do stupid things. Frankly the love story was very believable and I like how each heroine kind of grows in their own way. It's quite nice after me reading some pretty ridiculous VN stories, or vanilla ones.

The only part of the game play I was not impressed with was a silly break system where you have a questions and answers part to get enough points to proceed the story forward. These could have easily been just incorporated into a daily system without choices. They seemed superfluous. Some answers were good, but overall it was a little meh. It is nice the deeper your friendship grows, the better the answers get, but it could have been done better. I do somewhat like that some of the characters take longer to get to the main events, such as those who were not friends with the MC before hand.

Honestly I'm enjoying the game and will gladly finish off the 3 remaining routes. I'm guessing I have about 4-5 more hours of story. I'd recommend it at its cheap price, and hopefully nekoNyansoft will improve their translation capabilities for their next projects. 8/10 so far.

As a developer (not game dev but I understand this whole situation), I feel Square's pain with DQ XI. It's not that they are lazy, or cheap or anything. Literally upgrading UE versions could cause a crapload of bugs or incompatibles that the PS4 version would not have which needs to be sorted out, and on top of that they couldn't even program for the Switch since it wasn't there.

I think I am going to wait for the Switch version. I mean I want to play DQ XI but I got enough backlog to wait for it. Plus I would prefer to have it mobile anyway.

That didn't really explain anything about the 3DS version..
Yeah, you have to read between the lines on that one, as the 3DS was pretty much a different game to the PS4 version. So they opted to translate the two of three games they thought would bring the best return. Which was the PS4 & PC, while most of us knew the 3DS was never going to make it here, as the system is pretty much done. If an English version was ready to release now, the 3DS version would still be a low seller, as most who may want this title have moved on.

So we can all see how the NS game is just pretty much starting development. I would make the same bet no form of translation was ever started for the 3DS, and if it did, it was probably realized by the time it would be done, no one would be around to buy it. So they opted to go where the money is, and not where they hope it may be. While I'm not happy the 3DS version isn't happening here, it was of ZERO surprise to me honestly.

Congrats...I got the Plat myself yesterday. A good poison ranged weapon makes the post-game dungeon doable at a much lower level than it probably should be but I was happy not to have to grind the final story boss over and over again. The trophy for the skirmishes was a real headache though with no in-game way to track what you have and haven't done plus difficulties getting the battles I needed to appear. Good game with flaws like you said.

I'm so glad they didn't decide to hold back the PS4 and PC versions of DQ XI until the Switch version's done. Gonna take a while to hammer that square peg into a round hole.
