Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

square has some kind of weird A.D.D. with all their development branches and teams.  They need to restructure and demote everyone in charge since it is very apparent the people are not management potential.

WARNING: Nothing rant incoming!

Can you fathom the level of shitshow to which they are going to completely ruin this remake? I can. At the very least you know that we're getting 3+ separate $200 collector's editions lmao!

SquareEnix has gotten too big for their britches and really doesn't understand their niche. It's all about revenue, cashflow, and merchandising now instead of focusing on creating pure, unadulterated FF experiences. Just look what they did with FF13 and FF15. Stop with all of that shit. Cut the fat. Release the game, stop, and take the unused assets and put them towards the next numbered entry. Enough already.

They just milk and exploit every single main entry without even making the characters or the universe any more interesting. We get one main title per console cycle now. There's so much bloat that it's disgusting. SE makes countless crappy FF spinoffs nobody asked for. They're simulacra; these games are sequels of sequels, or spinoffs of spinoffs. These DS, Wii, Vita, and mobile games are copies of things that don't have an original. Coming to you soon: Nostalgia: the game, part 47. "Remember the Cactuar from that one game you played?" *wink wink* I honestly don't even understand how it's profitable, or who is buying all these crappy FF games and merchandise. They can't even get 'Mog' plushies right; people are desensitized to them and the company pumps out so much junk.

The poor state of this franchise is such a shame. It doesn't have to be this way.

SquareEnix has been in love with the smell of their own farts for over a decade. Since FF12 in 2006 the only things they've really done right were two MMOs on PC, and they each have had their own issues.

All I want from Squenix is a new classic FF. The last FF game I loved, that wasn't an MMO, was Final Fantasy 9. It's my favorite. I adore that game.

I can't wait for the FFVII remake.  I expect the whole of Midgar to be Day 1 DLC, the final boss to be a 6 part OVA released 2 years after the game, and the Gold Saucer to redirect to a smartphone app.

And a dating sim, picking between Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, Marley Marlene, Barrett, gender bending Cloud, and Cait Sith. Covers all bases.

don't forget it's separated into episodes with each episode sold at full price

Just play Dragon Quest. There hasn't been a decent FF game in well over a decade. Not sure why people still hold out hope at this point. It's like still watching The Simpsons in 2018 because you loved the Monorail episode.

Not crossdressing Cloud, too?
That's what I meant by gender bending Cloud?

Not gonna lie, that would probably make an absurd amount of money.

Gotta have the Sephiroth DLC though.

I generally stay away from mmo's and sub based games, but I recently played through most of ffxiv's content over the course of a few months and really enjoyed it. Was thinking the whole time, "Why can't you bring this quality to the single player console games?"

DQ is great as well.

Somehow I'm holding on to hope that the ffvii remake won't be a complete disaster.

i also really enjoyed ff14 too, and i hate paying subs.

didn't know ys viii had a steelbook exclusive :( i would of loved that. I only knew of vanilla or the ce.

FF14 is excellent.  It's just that once you hit the end, the endgame is grindy and difficult, the raiding players and Free Companies are very elitist and exclusionary, and yet the talent level of the player pool isn't very good.  The whole housing thing is a giant mess too; old money players have insane amounts of gil and you'll never even be able to participate at their level of the economy.  Game is a lot of fun though.  FF14 has some of the best production values out there.  It's pretty much the only MMO I've gone back to play again after quitting for a time.

Any FF fan who hasn't played it just because it's an MMO or something needs to give it a try.  You'll most likely love it.  It will take you 1-2 months of story missions and soloing at a hardcore pace before you'd even be near the endgame anyways.  The game plays mostly as a single-player game and there's all sorts of enjoyable single-player content.

They literally already tried. Remember FFXII? It was supposed to be the offline version of FFXI. Thus the gambits.

Just wanted to say I agree with most of this. But I do think FF13 was a pretty good package as a whole. It wrapped up pretty neatly as a trilogy, and there weren't much in the form of spinoffs. Regardless of how the quality of the games were, those three games were a complete product when put together imo.

However, FF15 goes completely against this, and you are right, they have completely milked the game. From the base game, season pass, possibly season pass 2, the mobile game before it released, the new mobile game after, the endless run mobile game, numerous ports, the CGI movie, the anime series, the manga series, the short novels, etc. There is just so much of the game split across different forms of media. Which would be okay if it actually tied together well, but it just seems so convoluted. It's become like Star Wars expanded universe amount of content, but this series isn't good enough to justify all this.

A lot of fans, including me, will say that FFXII was/is a really good game.

Anyway I was speaking more to the quality and polish that went into storytelling and characters (Heavensward and Stormblood in particular) than to mmo-sytle gameplay mechanics. The latter doesn't need to be in the single-player series entries - though the former is very much essential in any rpg.

It'll get reprinted. I'm almost certain the only retail version of this game right now is the day one edition. No reason NIS wouldn't reprint it.
Placed another order for pickup because I meant to say I wanted the Day One edition. Hope it goes through.

Star Wars at least built off of a solid base. The first movie is great and a self-contained story in it's own right. The trilogy built off of that, and the rest of the series built off the trilogy. The original Compilation of FFVII was the same way, building off the original game, even if that whole series ranged from decent to soul-crushingly awful.

FFXV is more like a big summer crossover comic out of DC and Marvel. Tying together a dozen different stories across as many individual series, with noone being able to really follow it all.

Fallen Legion is not very good.
I think this game deserves a fair shake. I played through the flames of rebellion campaign, and while the game can be extremely frustrating sometimes, if you stick with it, it will reward your increases in skill. I felt the active block was the most important thing to master, and there were a few AOE enemy skills that we're beyond cheap (Cassandra's Judgement). I think it falls into the Souls level of difficulty vs reward. Take that for what it's worth. Also, it really makes you consider your actions in war and highlights how there really are no winners.

It's crazy cus I was going to disagree with you saying I think, as a whole package of the movie + base game + season pass FFXV was pretty good. I enjoyed it a ton at least. But then you started mentioning all that other stuff that I haven't even heard of. Is the rest of that stuff all still trying to add more lore cus if so that's just ridiculous.

the praise for 14 is nice and all but many seem to forget it was a dumpster fire so  bad originally that they fired the entire team that worked on it and hemorrhaged money getting it to the point it currently is on top of making it free for a while iirc.  Regardless I am not interested in an mmo because it costs money and requires a credit card to start even if you use a free trial.

Some preowned price drops at GS today that I thought I'd share.

Demon Gaze II (ps4) $17.99
Lost Child (NS) $27.99

Bought these two with elite & cag16 promo for around $30+tax / fs.

Also God Wars (ps4) dropped quite a bit to $6.99, will work with the 4/$20 deal in stores going on now.

Thanks. Knew about Demon Gaze II since I happened to look for something to play next. Didn't know about God Wars though.

VGP just sent me an email with discount code of $5 off for Song of Memories.

Not sure if it's restricted to people who purchased Valkyrie Drive or not, but I don't plan on buying so putting it up here: PQUBE

Additional Information
Hajime Tabata has resigned.
Damn that kinda sucks. While I may not have liked the game, Aranea was my favorite thing about it, and Lunafreya deserved better.

Guess my dream of a FFXV-2 with Aranea, Iris, Cindy, and Gentiana as leads isn't gonna happen now.
