Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

GSC WonFes exclusives go up for sale 2/18. Includes Nendoroid Snow Miku Crane Priestess:

c7hECVV.jpg

US customers get half-off shipping at 1000 yen. With shipping this cheap, you don't need to worry about doing a group order.

I'll be ordering Nendo Miku (dat torii base!) and Nendo Megumin School Uniform ver (because KonoSuba).

On a side note, I'm currently doing a free TOM premium trial which includes a daily free try at an online crane game in Japan, and I actually won something! Got a Re:Zero acryllic keychain (of Rem I believe). The games are crazy hard though thanks to lag and weak-ass claws. I only won because the last person set me up so well. He should have won, but due to lag, he didn't touch the prize on his last attempt. I would never put money into it, but a free try per day is pretty fun.

Love the torii base, but the real string parts on both the bell and the fan have ultimately turned me off. Like with 2016, this'll be a figma-only Snow Miku year for me. Thanks for the news about the shipping; hadn't heard about that, though it's not too surprising as they've done it before.

I tried the online crane game when I (briefly) had TOM Premium, and could never get the danged thing to work right. The lag is so, so bad, and Japanese crane machines are hard enough in person. Congrats on winning(?) something though!

Toreba is actually a pretty good online UFO Catcher. I’ve won A few things from it. Way better than that one TOM has. That’s nearly unplayable.

Same, I've won before with Toreba, but the TOM one is ridiculous with the lag. Toreba can do it decently, not sure what's up with the TOM one.

Has anyone picked up the Overwatch Tracer Figma? I've been looking at buying it but I feel like the face sculpt is pretty awful. That's just from the few pictures I've seen online though. Curious if anyone who has it can shed some light on the quality and if it's worth the $60

Wow, that TOM thing is garbage! Decided to try it out even though I am in Japan and, apparently, the "lag" is built into the system because there is no way I should be seeing it. Oh well, it didn't even let me select Japan as my country so I would have had to have anything I won go to the U.S. anyway. LOL

Won another Re:Zero keychain from the TOM crane. I think it's Rem again, lol. There are four versions of her, so hopefully this one is different. I would like to try a different machine, but this is the only one currently available that they give you enough free points to play.

My winning log:

-Update-

Win #3 looks like Emilia.

Also got my first Rem in today:
mXMyGKT.jpg

-Update 2-

Got my second Rem in. Luckily it is different from the first one I got (standard pose this time).

Win #4 is Emilia (hopefully the other available version). This win was crazy since the prize was dead center in the machine. It would normally take a ton more moves to slowly get this, but I clawed the bastard so hard that it was carried back to the crane's resting position. They had to manually rip the prize off, lol.

I was hoping to win a Ram to complete the trio, but this machine is out of prizes. Next free machine is squirrel plushies which I don't care about :\

-Update 3-

Win #5 is Taito Fate/Apocrypha Astolfo.

I enjoyed the anime but admittedly this is not the best prize figure (face is a bit off). Still, as it was double point day (2400np for TOM premium members), it was fun getting to try one of the expensive machines (and winning in one try, lol, these guys must hate me).

-Update 4-

Win #6 is a set of 3 F/sn Heaven's Feel character keychains. Not sure which 3 I got, though I hope Sakura or Rin is in there (-edit- got Illyasviel, Archer, and Rin, so I'm happy). This was an expensive machine, but it turns out the double Friday points you get as a TOM premium carry over if you don't use them all that day, so I had exactly enough to play an 1800np machine.

-Update 5-

Win #7 is some Girls und Panzer thing. They call it a "pass case", but I have no idea what that means. It's my first win in a month. Besides the connection seemingly becoming worse (many days unplayable), some machines now combine US with Japanese players. It's hard to win with just one play against Japanese players who keep spending until they win. Of course for them, each turn is considerably cheaper (120yen vs $2.13).

-Update 6-

Win #8 is another pass case, this time from Love Live Sunshine. I think these are used to hold your train pass card, kind of like a specialized wallet. I don't need a pass case nor have I ever watched Love Live, but "we're envoys, we take what is offered", lol.

-Update 7-

I don't consider this a true win since I spent money to get it, but got Sega Evangelion Kaworu coat ver. Lesson learned: don't spend money on ufo catchers. Once you spend a little, you keep wanting to go until you win.

-Update 8-

Win #9 is a Re:Zero tin badge (I think Ram, which would be nice since I didn't get her keychain earlier). Back to winning on my one daily free play. Feels good after paying for my last win. Of course my pay-to-win was a prize I actually wanted and would have bought eventually, while this is a tin badge. The lag was decent when I played early morning. Maybe time of day affects amount of lag?

-Update 9-

Win #10 is another Re:Zero tin badge (Rem this time). I honestly don't care about most of these prizes (when will I use a tin badge?), but I do enjoy winning off a single free play.

-Update 10-

Win #11 is another Re:Zero tin badge (Ram again). I didn't get it on my first try, but thanks to the two free tries premium members get on Fridays, I was able to get it on my second try. This is the first time I've won two prizes within 24hrs (the other being Win #10). It probably sounds dumb, but I've been wanting to get back-to-back free wins. I have 7 days left of my free 90 day trial. I will try to win at least one more time before that time is up.

-Update 11-

Win #12 is a Sword Art Online Ordinal Scale keychain (I think Yui, but may be Kirito) (-edit- arrived, it is Yui, very cute ~). This was a weird win because the prize was stuck in the falling position before I even played. I used my free turn to see if I could nudge it, but it was too far down for the claw to touch. I messaged them that the prize was unreachable, thinking they would simply move it back up top for the next player. They ended up giving it to me. This one should have gone to whoever knocked it down that far in the first place. I'm not complaining... it's not like they would have given me my wasted turn back anyway.

You get five free plays when you download Toreba for mobile phones.  Seriously, give it a try if you like UFO Catchers but don't have regular access to them.

I've always liked UFO catchers. I still play Nintendo Badge Arcade free plays on 3DS every day. I need to stay away from Toreba if it works well since I would probably get addicted to it :p

Anyone buys banpresto here?

I just bought this on amiami

Havent gotten my invoice yet but it was priced at ¥1300 yen and chose SAL unregistered. Was that a good decision?

Yup. I have a handful of Banpresto prize figures and they're generally quite good for the price. Obviously, don't expect 10k yen figure quality, and be prepared for potential flaws.

Coincidentally, my most recent Banpresto arrival is also a Dragon Ball figure, albeit of Bulma; she turned out really well. I also have the rerelease of Midoriya from My Hero Academia on order.

Banpresto is one of the better prize figure makers imo. I usually go registered, but I like having a tracking number.

Thanks for quick reply. Since it was like only 1300 yen i figured i just go cheap in shipping. How much is the difference between reg and unreg? I bought a figma before worth $65 and sal reg was like $10 for it. Will i be getting the same price for this $13 fig? I was too excited to get it that i just said submit. Hehe

I missed out ordering the figma midoriya and kicking myself for it. That is a nice alternative! Still hoping they rerelease him soon and be alot cheaper.

Banpresto prizes are good. I have a few of the 1300 yen ones on pre-order (most recently Kirito).

Registered is 410 yen more than unregistered, regardless of shipping cost. For a 1300 yen figure, unreg is the way to go.

Thanks! Finally got my invoice its was ¥680 shipping for unreg. Total dollar cost was $18.84.

Im seeing US sellers selling this figure for like $29.99+shipping. Pretty happy with the savings yhough i have to wait longer.

GSC WonFes items are up for pre-order. Open 2/18 - 2/27 or until sold out. Remember that US orders get half off shipping for WonFes items (1000yen/$9 rather than the usual 2000yen/$18).

Figma Bride and Groom are also available for pre-order.

CUIXttA.jpg
7WHxBSs.jpg

This stock may be more limited than the WonFes items. For some reason, GSC did not categorize these as WonFes, so they have to be ordered separately from the WonFes stuff.

GSC offers to charge you in either USD or JPY. I recommend choosing USD at this time since GSC's conversion rate is good (1 USD = 109 JPY). If you pay with PayPal, you are not charged until 1-2 weeks before release.

I placed two orders. Nendo Snow Miku + Nendo Megumin came out to $105 shipped. Figma Bride + Figma Groom were $100 shipped.

Thanks for the reminder! Just a single figma Snow Miku for me this year.

As for WonFes itself, not much new for me on that front. Video game-wise, there's a handful of new Persona 5 and Pokemon figures, as well as some others. A bunch of previously-announced figures have gotten updates as well (colored prototypes, etc.). As usual, MFC's WonFes master lists should be going up later.

ETA: The List (new announcements) is live and in progress. Covers WonFes, Toy Fair, and announcements made just prior to those two events. The Other List (updates) hasn't gone up yet.

New figma preorders!

Widowmaker (Overwatch) - AmiAmi, HLJ, Hobby Search

The Pokemon Company also announced a new, Pokemon Center-exclusive figure line: Gallery Figures DX. First in the series will be Charizard, who will go on sale tomorrow for $28.99, according to Game Informer. The "regular" Gallery Figures are pretty decent, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this spinoff line does.

Finally, I found one hell of a deal over in MFC's figure sales thread: TOM is having a 30% back in points for premium members, also add the new "KOTOBUKIYA" coupon to get 20% off your order if you include a koto item, most items are already 5% off for premium members , so play it well to snatch around 50% off your order :)

I took advantage of this earlier today and ordered figmas Atlas and P-Body along with a cheap Nyanboard strap by Kotobukiya, then later preordered figma Pixie with the points earned. Each figma came to around $50-55 including shipping, which is pretty good considering how much the first two normally go for.

The Kotobukiya coupon (the code is literally "KOTOBUKIYA") is reusable and expires on March 1st. The 30x points deal expires the following day.

So i got my tracking number for an sal registered i ordered last week. When i tried looking at the tracking infl there was a message saying delays in delivery inthe USA. The message was marked in january 2018. Anyone ordered in feb got their shipments already? Does it really take almost a month for sal mail to arrive? Thanks

Don't think there are any SAL delays to US at the moment. My SAL orders are taking 3-4 weeks to arrive (for reference I live in FL). Two of my orders that shipped out on Feb 1 arrived Feb 20 and Feb 26 respectively.

I have three more SAL orders en route since 2 weeks ago, 1 week ago, and 3 days ago. The oldest one has reached New York, while the other two haven't updated since Japan.

SAL's been normal for me here since the holidays ended-- in other words, my packages take roughly three weeks to arrive. Sometimes there are delays, though. I wouldn't get worried until six weeks pass with no sign of a package.

Nendoroid Legend of Zelda BotW Guardian (August 2018):

Pre-order from AmiAmi BiJ HS HLJ

I already have the Guardian Amiibo so I wasn't that tempted on the Nendo, until I saw the included Game Over accessory:

Lol. I'll still try to not get it, but that is awesome.

They are also re-releasing Nendo BotW Link (regular and DX) if you somehow didn't get him the first time around.

Hoping that the Nendo Guardian goes on sale in the future (and yeah, the Game Over screen accessory is brilliant). My husband (who's currently playing BotW) wants one, but not at its preorder price.

Got my sal unregistered package from ami ami. Took 18 days. Came in a box that was well protected. Time to order more! Hehe
