Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

I haven't used Air Small Packet before. According to AmiAmi's shipping service comparison, ASP arrives faster than RSAL and provides the same tracking and 6000yen insurance.

I have an order of two Nendoroids waiting for payment on AmiAmi. Here's the shipping cost breakdown:

Amiami-ship.png

In this case, ASP is 400yen more than RSAL (SAL is still unavailable to all countries btw), and DHL is 260yen more than ASP. Considering that I've been very happy with DHL service, I'll continue to use it unless the price difference with ASP becomes greater.
Air has always been just slightly slower than EMS for me. I usually got stuff in a week with air.

I'm liking what I'm seeing. There are more video game figures here than I expected.

I hope Nendo Doom Slayer comes with plenty of weapons. Double-barreled shotgun, bfg, and chainsaw are at the top of my list. Not sure if chainsaw is even in the latest Doom games though.

I'm surprised Cyberpunk 2077 is getting so much figure love before it even comes out. First the PUP of Keanu, now Figma V. Maybe it's a continuation of their CD Projekt Red partnership after The Witcher figures did so well.

Nendo Marrie is very cute! May bite on that one.

Ghost of Tsushima Figma reminds me that I hope the game goes on sale for BF. A friend played through it (a few times) and loved every second.

Not game related, but I'm most happy to see Nendo Sesshomaru announced. Such a classic shounen series.

Nendos Bayonetta and KH2 Sora are now on TOM and BBTS. Cheapest price should be direct from GSC US (unless you have TOM points).

When ordering from GSC US, be sure to check the box for priority shipping since it's only $0.15 more than economy.

Something to worry about if they ever start shipping to US again ^^;

I don't get why they still have SAL completely shut down and EMS only available to a few countries. It's not like the packages are transmitting the virus. Just have pilots stay in approved accommodations away from the locals. That should keep them safe from bringing the virus home with them.

I had an Amazon JP pre-order (Myethos Senko-san) ship via DHL yesterday and arrive today. I'm so spoiled for returning to SAL's 3-4 week wait :p

Well, there's still Air Small Packet and Surface...

As for SAL and EMS, afaik, both are sent in the cargo holds of passenger planes, and there's a lot fewer of those leaving Japan these days (I'm not sure about Air). It's not like FedEx and DHL, which have dedicated cargo planes.

Yea, but surface is literally a boat that takes months to reach shores.
Yeah, I've never wanted to use surface. I think that's what TOM is using now with their Japan shipments. I've had a package from them in transit since 9/9 that I'm still waiting to reach UPS in US. Until UPS gets their hands on it, I have no way to track :\

I know, just wanted to point it out as an option that might be affected by the rate changes.

I actually had a proxy order sent Surface this summer, because the other shipping options were brutal, price-wise. Still waiting on it  Surface isn't too awful as long as one is patient.

Yay, my TOM order finally arrived after nearly two months. Shipped 9/9, no tracking update until 11/2, delivered 11/6. It's nice they were able to ship it out from Japan without charging an extra fee, but the wait was real.

Play-Asia is offering free economy shipping this week. Pre-ordered a prize figure for $15 that would have cost $30 from BBTS. Going to check if there's anything else I'm interested in.

-Update- Ordered two more prize figures, FuRyu Shima Rin ($17) and Taito Miku 3rd Season Winter ver ($15). I've been avoiding ordering prize figures lately since shipping prices right now kill the savings of getting a prize, but this free shipping deal is great ^^

The chainsaw over the BFG 9000? Booo.

The lil' Cacodemon is cute, though. It was always a long shot, but I wish Daisy had been included as well.

I love the chainsaw, especially with the blood effect. Of his weapons, I think this will be the most fun to pose with other figures.

But yeah, the BFG 9000 is a sad miss. I don't recognize the sword, so I'm guessing it's from the newer games. I could have passed on that one in favor of the BFG.

I was thinking about Daisy too. We could maybe find a 1:12 rabbit at a hobby store.

The sword is the Crucible, which plays an important(-ish) role in Doom Eternal.

If we're lucky, maybe there'll be a Classic Doomguy Nendo later on with different accessories.

TOM's Super Sale has started and runs until Dec. 3. Includes bonus points across the shop (25x, 35x for figures for Premium members). There's also some Premium-exclusive deals that are either 90% off or include 90x bonus points; new deals added daily.

Checked out the 90% off section. The cheapest shipping for just a single acrylic keychain is $9, so kinda kills the deals. They could work as an add on item if you're already ordering other stuff.

The daily deals will be interesting. Today they have Nendo D.Va with 90x points back. Btw, she's getting a re-release and a new (and very expensive ) "Nendoroid Jumbo" mech : https://myfigurecollection.net/item/1080744

BF Sale at GSC US: https://www.goodsmileus.com/category/Figures-67&tags=11

10-50% off, but most are 10-15%. The only figures to reach 50% off are from Dota2.

Good looking out, lilman! I forgot to post that one here.

In other news, I've been made an admin at MFC's Bargains/Sales/Coupons club (and before that, I started the new figure sales thread). If you have any suggestions for me regarding that place, I'll see what I can do :) I'm also looking for more "permanent deals" to add to the new thread.

I don't have anything to add to your permanent deals selection. I only shop at a few stores and you already include them. AmiAmi's sales section in particular can have great deals.

I was wondering going forward into next year with increasing Japan shipping costs and hard to predict jpy to usd exchange rates, have you all been pre-ordering 2021 figures from Japan or US stores? Like for Nendoroids, I've been debating over using GSC US more instead of AmiAmi. GSC US has higher figure costs than Japan stores and the release delay has increased from one month to at least two months after Japan's, but shipping is only $5.60 per Nendo and we don't have to worry about currency exchange. Any thoughts?

Nice new Miku prize coming from Taito:

Given that no one knows when SAL shipping is coming back as an option for the US, the only Japanese shop I have unshipped orders with right now is HLJ (I'm counting TOM as a US store here). I have about 25-33% of my current figure/goods preorders with them. There are some items, like ensky's Kirby goods and Re-ment trading figure sets, that I buy regularly but have little to no distribution at established US shops, plus Private Warehouse offers good bang for the buck, shipping-wise, so I'll probably continue to buy action figures and other smaller items from them for the time being.

I also collect video game music and have been buying import Switch games more often. For those items, CDJapan remains my best option, even with higher shipping costs.

I've been avoiding buying from other shops in Japan for the time being. As for Goodsmile US, I tend to stick with them for exclusives and buy most other GSC figures elsewhere. TOM is a good option for those if you have points to burn and don't mind the wait.

Yea, I've been buying more from US stores again because after shipping, it's usually cheaper. I assume SAL will probably be back mid next year, so anything out in late 2021 is probably safe to get from Japan again.

I have several orders from Hobby Search that haven't shipped because I don't want to pay like $30 shipping for a nendo or whatever it is.

I was planning to renew my 3-month TOM Premium membership in early January like usual, but while placing an order, I realized that it's cheaper to buy a year of Premium instead. A year of Premium costs $60 and gives back $75 in points. The cool part is that these points can be applied to the same order you're placing. Basically, my order became $15 cheaper ($60 - $75) and now I have Premium paid for next year ^^

Here's the order breakdown with discounts:

tomorder.jpg

Also used my Premium 10% birthday coupon and $62 in points I've built up from 3-month renewals during the year.

Only loosely thread related, since it's not exactly from a game, but E2046 is taking pre-orders for Shunya's Demon pre-painted, again, finally.

I got this one a few years ago from someone off eBay after adding a watch and checking for a year or so, that had a professional assemble an unpainted kit and paint it. It's one of my favorites and it's been on my wishlist for years so I got a notification email about it. Neat that it finally came back around:

https://www.e2046.com/p/9151

ce8782415aaf4f312ea9a27e9ff9820b.jpg

If you're unfamiliar with E2046, it seems to be that they basically do a lot of (very high quality) knockoffs? but also some originals. They mostly offer kits you can assemble and paint yourself, but they also offer a few pre-painted ones sometimes (like this one). It's also resin. This is an original in that I don't think an 'official' version exists, but it's based off a Shunya Yamashita sketch. The one I got a few years ago off eBay was painted blue, I think the purple looks a lot better :D

I was going to place an order with TOM myself. But, my girlfriend got me a $200 Hatsune Miku from them for Xmas. She arrived broken, and they told her they don't do refunds, to contact Goodsmile.
Thats a fucking joke.
Goodsmile told her due to COVID, they are unsure when they can issue her replacement parts, possibly by March.
Thats just shit business on TOM'S part

That's normal business practice for defective GSC products. Since GSC provides world-wide product support, shops ask that you contact them directly.

For manufacturers that you can't get support from yourself, TOM steps up big time. They've sent me a few replacements over the years. I didn't have to send the defective figure back or pay shipping, even for large expensive scales. Once I contacted them for a Phat Company scale, and they replied that Phat is under the GSC umbrella so go through GSC support (which I did and got a replacement part).

Among the Japan shops I've contacted for support, I rank TOM and HLJ at the top. Next is AmiAmi and Amazon JP.

I have many replacement parts waiting to ship from GSC from over the past year. Mostly defective Nendo parts like face plates with random paint marks (their qc seems to have gone down over the past few years). It's annoying to have to wait, but as they ship everything via Japan Post, there's not much choice. GSC support has been very good to me. You'll get your Miku :)

Thats quite reassuring, but I'd rather TOM just refund her money so she can buy a replacement somewhere. With the way things are currently, I'd feel they should make exceptions knowing people are going to have a hard time getting replacement parts.

Not sure if anyone's been debating on her, but I also got an amazing Goodsmile/WithFans! Millim figure for Christmas. Did an unboxing, she's just so awesome!

GSC US up-to 20% off sale: https://www.goodsmileus.com/featured/year-end-sale-2020

Looks like Air SPR is not available to US again. Just got an email from TOM that my order cannot be shipped and to choose another shipping method. Just paid for an AmiAmi order with Air SPR too >_<

Lately I've been placing pre-orders at GSC US and BBTS. I want to reduce dealing with Japan shipping next year.

I got the TOM birthday coupon as well, considering using it with their new year extra points promotions. I don't know much about TOM points - would I be able to use the points from a paid pre-order immediately on another follow-up order? Or would I need to wait until the product actually ships to get the rewards?

EDIT: Aw, looks like they fixed the birthday coupon. It's actually only giving $5 off instead of 10% off the whole order for me.

You get the points as soon as you place the order and can use them immediately on a subsequent order.

Went a little nuts. Goodbye stimulus/holiday bonus, and to a lesser extent Christmas/birthday money. Looks like it's been 3 years since my last figure purchases, too.

It was pointed out to me I have a built in shelf in my bedroom with nothing on it. One of those flat spots at the top of a wall under a high vaulted ceiling, that I can put more waifus. Won't even have to get/build another display case! So over the next 3-15 months I guess it'll fill in.

I did a few orders from TOM to get all the small little "hey get three months premium and save a little extra bit"

then "hey, make your 3 months 12 months and save a little bit on that too"

And chained some of the cash back from some orders into others, etc.

Got the following:

Wish you could get the exact same version of this figure with the stockings instead of bare-leg, but not a huge deal!

I saw a couple of things that looked like pretty decent prices/deals but decided against them ultimately while I was looking.

AmiAmi had this (pre-owned) for ~$22.08:

and Solaris Japan had this for ~$73.61 pre-owned, but there is a note on the listing in general that there is a manufacturing flaw with the face.. I liked the one where she has a glass full of eyeballs more anyway.

If I can find this tentacle Cthulhu idol at a reasonable price one day, she's great:

I seem to have picked up an appreciation for bunny girls that I didn't really used to have. I blame Jade from DQXI. That and they're usually 1/4 scale figures, as I mentioned, the spot I'm planning to put them won't have the shelf-height restrictions a display case normally would

Wish we knew more about him during the pre-order period. The original was a Japan exclusive, and the remake doesn't come out until April. Cool character design at least.
The NieR we got back in the 360/PS3 years was NieR Gestalt. The only difference between it and Replicant is the main character: Gestalt's Nier is Yonah's dad, and Replicant's is her brother. The Nendo is of Brother Nier, in other words.

I much prefer Papa Nier over Brother Nier personally, but Square Enix is trying to make everyone forget that Gestalt ever existed
