Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

Should be cheaper to buy both from AmiAmi. SALR should be no more than 1590 JPY. With each Figma at 3030 JPY, your total would be 7650 JPY. At today's PayPal rate (1 USD = ~98.4 JPY), that is ~$78. BBTS is $100 without shipping.

You will also get them two months earlier ^^

Pre-ordered the Link and Samus Figmas before I forget. Also ordered Racing Miku 2011 Figma. Now I've satiated my need for more figures... For now!
just saw that gamestop has the figma samus and link for preorder.
Wow, that's actually kind of surprising. They also have the Zero Suit Samus figure. I noticed a typo on the page too "Metroid Samus Aran Zero Figma Action Figure." Yeah if only it was a figma!

Hey guys, which one do you think its more worth getting zero suit Samus or Varia Suit Sumus?
I can only afford to buy one because i go back to school that month, and i don't want to be so broke.

I can't really comment on the quality as I don't own either, but I'm going to say Varia Suit because it's a Figma and I love Figmas.

Kind of an odd comparison... one is a statue and one is basically a figure, and they're very different prices (as the statue is 2-3x more than the figma, depending on where you buy from).

I'd get the figma though. It's incredibly pose-able and very true to the game.

The statue is really nice but I never liked the Other M Samus. Well, I didn't like Other M. Period. If you want a Zero Suit Samus, I'd go with the First4Figures model since that's closer to the Brawl Zero Suit Samus.

PAK Raiden and Liquid Snake are available for pre-order, along with a slick looking PAK FFVII Advent Children Vincent Valentine. All three release in Japan this September.

PAK Raiden (6780 JPY, ~$70): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-000330
from BBTS ($80): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=SEP10434&mode=retail

PAK Liquid Snake (6780 JPY, ~$70): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-000331
from BBTS ($80): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=SEP10433&mode=retail

PAK FFVII AC Vincent (6780 JPY, ~$70): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-000332

Personally I don't think these MG figures came out well. The faces on both look... off. I like how PAK Revengeance Raiden came out much better. Vincent looks cool though I'm not familiar with FF.
zero suit Samus or Varia Suit Sumus?
Varia Suit ftw. It's classic Samus. I also like the posability and lower cost. I have a pic of both if you want to compare: http://myfigurecollection.net/picture/687094

You know i'm going with the figma instead. After looking at reviews on youtube and illman's picture of both, i see that the figma is more detail and at least more worth getting. The Zero suit Samus seems really plain to me.

Thanks.

The pictures they put out for the MG figures never do em justice. I'd actually go as far as to say Revengeance Raiden is my least favorite of the bunch. I feel like the rest actually have pretty solid paint jobs on em.

Not wild about the price seemingly going up ten bucks each time a new one drops though. Thanks for the heads up about preorder availability though! I forgot to even check.

Ya know, I never really bought any figures before, and thanks to this thread I just pre-ordered my fourth one I guess in the Samus Figma. Have a Yukiko and 2 Chies, one the High Priestess one coming out in July.

I like zero suit, but the poses for Figma are just too good with that suit, so many options with her iconic poses.

Now that I'm playing Animal Crossing New Leaf, I placed a pre-order for the adorable Isabelle (see http://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/279912-japanese-vg-figure-thread-link-samus-re-rel-sept-sonic-re-rel-oct-link-rah-nov/?p=10537971). Animal Crossing seems popular worldwide. Let me know if I should add her to op.

Just as a small tip, Cruchyroll.com is a site that I've used to buy stuff off of. Usually the normal member's price isn't too amazing but you can find some good deals as much as $20 off or so if you just get a free trial for a week :p

People who pre-ordered Kotobukiya SAO Asuna from Crunchyroll weren't happy: http://myfigurecollection.net/items.php?iid=126835&page=comments&search=crunchy

-Edit- Hmm... maybe they were just confused because US stores take at least an additional month to get stock after a Japan release.

Heads up for everyone, Japanese Yen has been gaining strength lately. Current PayPal rate is 1 USD = 91.7 JPY, while it was about 98 JPY a few weeks ago. Keep this in mind when placing pre-orders several months in advance, especially for expensive items. For example, Link RAH for 15,800 JPY would have been ~$162 a few weeks ago, but today would be ~$173.

Ordered Nendoroid Sonic after watching this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CSoFkfFtLU

(lol at how many "favorite accessories" he has, but at least shows passion for the figure)

He comes out same month as Nendoroid Isabelle (October 2013) so can combine shipping.

Nendoroid Sonic from AmiAmi (2790 JPY, ~$30): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIG-IPN-2917

Nendoroid Shizue (Isabelle) from AmiAmi (2790 JPY, ~$30): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIG-MOE-9524

-Edit- Isabelle is available again for pre-order from AmiAmi. Both have gone oos for a while, so if interested it is best to order now.

Kind of really want this... wonder if my LCS will get one... just grabbed a ton of Sword Art Online stuff at Anime-Expo. First anime I've been interested in since early-2000s

Holy hell, Lil. You're my hero. You ordered with these guys before? I'm all over this.
I've ordered from HLJ plenty of times so no worries. They are especially good for prize figures like these.

If these are your first prize figures, be aware that their quality will be nothing compared to normal figures. Expect paint blotches and random defects. I buy plenty of prize figures since they are cheap (at least compared to normal figures) and usually look good despite lower quality.

Oh man, this is what I get for waiting a night. Naoto's discontinued. Aaaaughghgh.

Edit: S'ok. Play-Asia had the set. Good to go, and thanks again.

Last edited by a moderator:
Sorry to hear that. I should have warned you to buy immediately as figures easily sell out.

I checked the other sites from the op and couldn't find Naoto. Big in Japan had them as a set http://biginjap.com/pvc-figures/6147-persona-4-the-ultimate-in-mayonaka-arena-tatsumi-kanji-shirogane-naoto-figures-set-of-2.html, but they are long sold out. Prize figures are very popular. I pre-order the day they appear, and many times they are sold out by the end of that day (like these http://biginjap.com/pvc-figures/7766-ghost-in-the-shell-arise-dxf-figures-set-of-2.html I ordered this morning, sold out in a few hours, and don't even come out until December). Nippon-Yasan is another source for prize figures, but they don't have Naoto.

If you're still interested, your best bet now is to watch the second-hand stores from the op. I get a lot of oop figures from Mandarake and AmiAmi Pre-owned, especially prize figures. You can even use http://www.figinstock.com to automatically email you when it's noticed a site has what you're looking for. I've picked up quite a few figures thanks to them. When setting up your pre-owned watch list, use "Naoto" to search both Mandarake and AmiAmi, and use an additional search of "直斗" for Mandarake since many of the Mandarake stores do Japanese-only listings. You will get alerts for other figures of the same character, which you may like better anyway. Alerts for Kanji might be a pain since you are going to get a lot of false positives. You may want to grab Kanji now from HLJ, even though that means you won't be able to share shipping with Naoto. Be aware that if you get Naoto and Kanji figures from different releases, they may not come in matching sizes like the ones I first posted. Search http://www.myfigurecollection.net for a list of all Naoto and Kanji figures including their sizes.

^ sorry for wall of text @_@

Caved and grabbed a Koto Asuna today instead of Kitty Pryde, I can find Kitty Pryde later rather easily I'm sure. Next up in must-haves is the new Psylocke anyways.

No worries at all. I appreciate you taking the time to share the tips!  :)  Hoping that the two coming as a set from Play-Asia will be good as far as size consistency goes.

This is my first foray into prize figures, so I'll absolutely keep all of this in mind for the future. I'm glad that I'm content with just the two; I'd be going nuts if I felt the need to catch 'em all. Definitely giving figinstock a look too.

Glad you found others. They should be fine size-wise if they come as a set.

Yes, catching figures like they're Pokemon is an expensive problem. I do have some multiples of my favorite characters. If a Nendoroid of Figma comes out, I like to pair it with a scale or prize.

Good advice on fixing paint marks on prize figures: http://myfigurecollection.net/blog/7311

I've used that technique a few times. You have to use 100% acetone nail polish remover, normal remover doesn't seem to do anything. Any area you do this to will become a little lighter and shiny, but it's usually better than leaving the marks be.

Here's an example of when I fixed a red mark on a prize figure's cheek:

Random dots of paint are also very common with prizes, usually most noticeable on skin. Nail polish remover works well on these.

for hobby link japan does this sites shipping require a signature?
For any of these sites, SAL Unregistered (i.e. without tracking or insurance) does not require signature, while SAL Registered, SAL Parcel, EMS, and FedEx must be signed for. I'll add this to the op.

Dizzy (Guilty Gear XX) (November 2013) (re-release):

UqnHgkW.jpg

Dizzy from AmiAmi (9400 JPY, ~$100): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIG-MOE-2365

This has been among the the top figures on MFC for a long time. She's 1/8 scale, made by Alter (the best quality figure company), and has two fighting spirits on her back. She easily goes for $200 used. I know nothing of Guilty Gear, but if my end of year weren't already full, I would pick this one up for sure.

No love for spider-man figma
Reactions to this Figma have been mixed on MFC. I think he looks good (dat metallic paint) and would pose him like this: http://myfigurecollection.net/picture/754189

Unfortunately he is a bit pricey for a Figma and is coming out in December, which for most people is already an expensive month. I will probably not pre-order but maybe try to pick him up next year.

Oh yeah, I am all over this!
Me too. I'm interested to see the new Figma posability.

I'm sure Disgaea fans are happy. I haven't played any of the games, only watched the anime which was alright. I'm surprised they didn't include a Prinny with Etna, would have been the perfect accessory.

Iron Man Mk42 looks sweet but carries a hefty price tag for a Nendoroid. It's probably due to his impressive hall of armor base. I already have the Mk7 Nendoroid so I won't be picking this one up.

Wooo, Kanji and Naoto showed up. They look kind of amazing, given some of the images and reviews I'd seen floating around. Thanks again for the assists.
Awesome, glad you like them ^^ There are plenty of P4 figures around if you are interested in other characters.

Oh god and I swore I'd never by a Nendoroid. But if there's any series that could change my mind, it's Disgaea. And yes I know they've done some before, but Raspberyl ain't got nothing on the original cast.

Aw what the heck, I'll preorder these. Can always cancel if it comes to that...but if they announce Laharl, that's it, I'm done.

I only wanted to collect scale at first, but Nendoroid eventually won me over due to cuteness and (relatively) lower cost.

If you pre-order from a Japanese retailer, you don't want to cancel. Doing so will usually get you banned from the store. The only exception is Hobby Link Japan. They are a bit more expensive but offer private warehouse that lets you cancel orders as long as you haven't been invoiced yet. HLJ's Disgaea links:

Nendoroid Etna from HLJ (3166 JPY, ~$34): http://www.hlj.com/product/PHT57107/

Nendoroid Flonn from HLJ (3166 JPY, ~$34): http://www.hlj.com/product/PHT57108/

I've been importing figures for around 6 years so I know the deal. Ami used to be real bears about cancellations but they've eased up as of late. Although I would probably only cancel in case of a financial emergency or something similar.

I used to love HLJ but yeah, their prices aren't so great these days. Not the worst, but not the best either.

Summer WonFes is on Sunday. Holding onto my wallet, here...

Er, Private Warehouse isn't their cancellation system-- rather, it lets you combine up to 60 days' worth of purchases into one or multiple shipments. It's the best, most flexible, and most economical shipping system out of any of the online shops, and tends to make up for their prices a lot of the time, depending on what you buy.

Preordered Etna and Flonne at Ami this time, though, on the night they went up (and even though Flonne's default face looks off and Etna lacks a Prinny). If their releases were staggered, I would've gone with HLJ and had them shipped together, but since they're both out in December, Ami's shipping shouldn't be too bad this time... as long as one of them isn't delayed

Possible extra shipping costs aside, these two were first announced ages ago, so any more delays would just be painful.

I hope WonFes is announcing figures for next year and not 2013. My wallet is already crying over existing pre-orders for the rest of 2013.
