Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

I'm not much of a Zelda fan, but this Nendoroid's pretty irresistible. This might be the best Nendo since Jack Frost.

When I saw that promo pic of Link holding up the Heart Container, the chest music played in my head. I'm gonna take that as a sign, and maybe preorder him at HLJ… maybe...

ETA: My husband's seen him and now wants him. Welp! XD

Problem with Nendos that are solicited here (the US, via Bluefin, etc.) is that they're usually marked up a good amount.  I mean, a lot of imports are marked up, but they seem to have a higher markup than, say, Bandai stuff.

Nendoroid Shimakaze is currently in stock at HS: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10245077

Probably won't last long considering how hard she was to pre-order. I got her in the mail today. She looks cute and includes a lot in her larger than average Nendo box. Never played Kan Colle though. As far as I know, it's only offered in Japanese :(

Updated op with more Wind Waker Link store links. Big in Japan is the cheapest place to order him from. If you can, I would pay upfront now since the JPY -> USD rate is good right now. Ordered today with cheapest shipping would be $38.

Import figures are marked up for the cost of importing + store profit + convenience fee of not dealing with foreign store. Many people don't want to buy direct from Japan even though it's usually cheaper.

I don't mean stores importing directly and marking it up.  I mean Nendo's solicited in Diamond by licensed distributors for this country (these are the ones you can usually preorder from places like amazon.com or comic stores).  Sure there's still a markup, but the margin is pretty high.

For example, there are a bunch of Nendoroids in the most recent Previews.  The Little Busters Refrain: Komari is solicited for $55, when it retails for 3611 Yen.  That's a decent markup, even with shipping much cheaper to import.

Figuarts Naruto, also in the most recent Previews, is $39.99, retails in Japan for 4000 Yen.

I realize Bandai is a bigger company, and some of these figuarts (mainly the power rangers and Dragonball ones) are kinda specifically made for the US market (and are exclusives in Japan).

So u havnt imported anything and i saw figma strength at amiami for 4700 yen. If thats the only item im getting and id want the shipping with tracking (ems right?) how much would that be in $ includng paypal fees? Thanks guys. Sorry for being noob.

HLJ estimates EMS shipping for Strength at 1,740 yen; it might be a little more or less at AmiAmi (probably more… if I remember right, HLJ discounts its EMS shipping). You can also ask Ami to ship SAL Registered, which is cheaper and includes tracking/insurance, but it's also slower; still, it's worth looking into if you don't mind the wait. If you want a much more accurate estimate, I believe you can get one directly from Ami if you email them.

The total in USD, using HLJ's shipping estimate, is around $63 at today's exchange rate, but it will be slightly higher at PayPal thanks to their currency conversion fees… probably closer to $65. Hope this helps!

So i went to frank and sons last wednesday and look what i found in one of the shops there...
These are my 1st nendoroids and i dont know if i got ripped off or got lucky. but i was able to haggle these 2 for only $50. The vendor looked japanese and he was selling other nendoroids and figmas in his shop. Boxes seemed legit like how i saw online and figures looked nice. These will fo for now til i find a good priced figma versions of these two.

Pretty sure those are bootlegs :(

At quick glance the paint looks sloppy and Kirito's base should be cloudy plastic rather than completely transparent. If you remember any of the other figures the vendor had on sale, check MFC to see if a counterfeit exists for those. You'll likely find that all of his figures have a counterfeit version available.

Last edited by a moderator:
Don't have my legit ones on hand to compare, but at those prices, they're more than likely counterfeit.

Edit: The mouth on that faceplate is supposed to be painted white too.

Thanks guys. Actually it really crossed my mind when he gave me the price. Oh well. That is why i didn't want to buy nendoroids in the first place because of the so many counterfeits. i guess i was just happy and blinded to get some SOA figures. hehe! these will just have to be placed farther away than my other legit figures.

One thing to remember when buying official Nendoroids from US shops is that, nine times out of ten, they will have an AAA Anime sticker on the back. AAA is one of a very small number of official US distributors for Good Smile Company and serves a lot of independent comics and figure shops. Aside from looking out for paint imperfections, suspiciously low prices, etc., spotting that AAA sticker is a reasonably reliable way to tell whether or not a Nendo is genuine.

Anybody know where i can get a revoltech woody no.10 "creepy woody" at reasonable price?
Depends on what you mean by "reasonable price". Mandarake (www.mandarake.jp) has a few potentially available for Y4000 + shipping, which would be ~$65 shipped. Barring that, you'd probably have to visit a Mandarake in Japan to pay less.

Yeah, he's a very popular figure. My advice would be to wait for a reprint to be announced (he gets rereleased at least once a year), then jump on a preorder as soon as possible.

This figure gets reprints? Damn! Was too impatient last night and started searching at eBay. Found one selling for $54. Bit and bought it. I guess if it gets re released again il buy another to keep sealed or something. That creepy face is so awesome!

Got my creepy woody!
Im impressed! Wonder why this is the only time i thought of buying him. I did think i overpay for him. Oh well. Hope they reproduce him again. Will probably buy 2 more of him.

Got my creepy woody!
That quote would be misinterpreted in any other CAG thread :p

It's funny that In the secondhand market, the version of him without the creepy face (the one with an alien instead of the little binoculars guy) goes for only 1500 JPY while the creepy version is 4000 JPY. Almost everyone who buys him just wants that creepy face.

I think the one with the alien is a smaller version of the figure And not as articulated as the this sci-fi versions. After playing with the figure last night, im tempted to get the buzz and jessie versions too!! Waaaahh! This figure collecting is starting to sting!

This thread also caters to non anime figures right? Like play arts kai and sh figuarts?

Decided to preorder the playarts kai snake ground zero and sh figuarts goku normal.

Cant wait to get those figures!

Hehe, mini Revoltech. He's about an inch smaller than a regular Revoltech / Figma. Looks like PS1 Snake. Too bad they didn't include a little sneak box.

Do you guys want him in the op?[/quote]

Broken link.

Quick question. If this is the only I'm buying, what do you think would be the cheapest price I'll be paying for it. (Ems shipping + paypal fees and customs?]. First time to order from ami ami and I wanted to try something cheap first to experience how it is before plunging to the higher priced amounts.

What country do you live in? If you're in the US, you won't get dinged for customs on hobby items unless the package's contents' total worth is thousands of dollars (forgot the exact threshold), and in my experience shipping stuff internationally, Canada and most other countries won't care if it's something worth ~US$20-25 or less.

As for shipping, does it have to be EMS for something so small/cheap? SAL is much cheaper and just as reliable, and insurance for that (using SAL Registered) covers up to 6,000 yen. It's slower, yeah, but the average shipping time for most people is 2-4 weeks.

PayPal charges a 2.5% currency conversion rate, IIRC, but they will let you use your credit card's own rate if that's too high.

Of the many figures I've imported, I've never payed customs in US. I think your package has to be worth at least $2000 for customs fees to kick in.

Rather than going with AmiAmi, Revoltech Mini Snake is a little cheaper at HLJ: http://www.hlj.com/product/KYD10001/

With SAL Unregistered shipping (which is what I would use for such a small and inexpensive figure), total should be about $30.

You could also wait for Big in Japan to list him (probably on Monday). BiJ will give you shipping quote and you have the choice to pay upfront with today's good JPY -> USD rate.

Thanks. I'm now interested in getting that snake revoltech figure.
Well that one is different since it is "Revoltech Mini". A regular Revoltech (such as Revoltech Peace Walker Naked Snake) is about the same size as Figma, averaging 140 mm / 5.46 in. Revol Mini Snake, on the other hand, is about an inch smaller at 115 mm / 4.49 in.

If you want a full size Revoltech Snake, then the Peace Walker version is currently your only option. I have him, and he looks good standing next to Figma Link. I would prefer PS1 Snake over PW Snake, but that smaller size Revol Mini won't display well with my other Figma / Revoltech. I do plan on getting Nendo Snake whenever he comes out.

Oohhh! Nendo snake is going to be a must buy for sure. They are probably waiting for phantom pain to be releaesed. More hype, more preorders, more money!

Really?! Man, i'm not interested in the figure anymore. I guess i'll pick up PW Snake or RV Raiden from Mandarake (?).

PW Snake is in stock at HLJ for 3222 JPY (~$34): http://www.hlj.com/product/KYD010834/

Both PW Snake and RR Raiden are in stock at Anime-Island for about $46 ea:

RR Raiden is getting re-released in white: http://myfigurecollection.net/item/196850

I like his original version better. I really need to open him (as soon as I clear some display space).

So any of you buy playsets for your figures? Since in just buying a couple of my favorite figmas and some nendoroids any ideas what are the must haves?

I have a couple of the official Nendoroid playsets, but they're out of print now.

A lot of people like to use Sylvanian Families (aka Calico Critters) dollhouses/furniture and Re-Ment miniatures for Nendos. Here's one such display project - http://myfigurecollection.net/blog/14026 Been considering going this route myself, but lack the display space, for one thing. Amazon and other US toy retailers carry Sylvanian Families/Calico Critters products, as does AmiAmi; Re-Ment miniatures are available from most of the big online Japanese hobby shops.

Not as sure about figmas, though if I remember right, they're somewhere around 1/12 scale, so miniatures that fit that criteria tend to get used.

I wish they would re-release the official Nendoroid Play Sets. The first Nendoroid More Cube just went up for pre-order but doesn't look as nice as the original sets. For the low price I'll probably pick it up anyway: http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-005858

So far I've picked up this bakery set: http://www.target.com/p/li-l-woodzeez-tickle-your-taste-buds-bakery/-/A-13528661

The quality isn't as good as Re-Ment or Sylvania / Calico, but for the money you get a ton of food accessories. I plan to take some pics with this soon. Eventually those donuts are going to Nendo Shinobu ^^

The past few MFC picture of the day have used a $50 Calico Critters house set with Nendoroids: http://myfigurecollection.net/picture/978973&ref=user%3Akkraisin (click the user's profile for more pics)

I'm currently working on my own Japanese room play set. I've picked up some furniture accessories like a Re-Ment kotatsu and Pink Tank tatami mats. I'll probably print out the walls from papercraft sites. I wish I had the skill to build my own shoji doors like this guy did.

Speaking of papercraft, this site has amazing templates that are perfect for figures: http://paperm.jp/craft/dollhouse/index.html

Here's an awesome example usage on MFC: http://myfigurecollection.net/picture/854881

One figure at a time! Hehe!
Got her in amazon for $31.

The playsets seems more the size of nendo! Was looking at images of the revoltech in playsets too. Just feels weird buying a dollhouse though. Hehe!

Like you, I don't want to buy a dollhouse either. I only want something to take pictures with and then put away. That's the nice thing about small play sets, but I'm not aware of a Figma equivalent to what has been mentioned here. For Figma you need to find 1:12 houses / furniture. Papercraft is the cheapest way to go and you can print at whatever size you need. You need to have craft skills though (I don't have much of that, lol).

I think the best way to go for Figma play set is to buy some 1:12 furniture and use papercraft for everything else. If you wanted to make a Figma classroom, for example, you could buy this set by Hasegawa: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10166366

Each package comes with 3 desks and chairs, as well as paper printout of a wood floor. Some assembly is required (the parts come on runners), but you can get by without painting. For the walls of the classroom, you could search papercraft sites for templates. Example school play set on MFC: http://myfigurecollection.net/picture/753966&ref=item%3A88675
