Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

I keep going back and forth over whether I want this figure. It seems like one of those that look good from exactly one viewing angle, and having the figure isn't much better than just looking at photos taken from that one perfect angle.
Probably true, since you'll want the angle with Monokuma facing you.

I just gave in and got her though.

I actually did, lol. That reminds me, it was EMS, I wonder where it is.

Edit:

It departed LA tomorrow! Wait.

Departed USPS Facility
LOS ANGELES, CA 90009

(Should still get it by Christmas Eve, I think)

Nendo Red is fantastic. Got Ryuko for my fiancee and she actually ordered Satsuki for me, which is fucking adorable. Pretty much have to get Mako now.

We were also just talking about SAO figures. Might put down a preorder for Asuna and Sinon now. Figma, pls make Liz.

Happy holidays, fellow collectors.

Ah, that's a bummer. Was a little crazy and tempted to look for a D-Arts Metal Garurumon. Not thrilled about taking the risk on something like that though.

I wouldn't use N-Y unless absolutely necessary. I used them once and while the Nendo I received was legit, it was a shitty experience. I removed them from the list of sites in op after the bootleg report.

I used NY once so far, plus i have a preorder pending. The delivered order went off without a hitch. Th.e items arrived in prefect condition and appear real.

Got my first order in from Tokyo Otaku Mode. The shipping box was huge for just one Nendo. I think they went with the big box to fit a clear file folder that holds the packing slip and AmiAmi-style thank you card. Very well done, will shop with them again.

Figma MGS2 Solid Snake (April 2015):

90sfUHp.jpg

Figma Snake from AmiAmi (6060 JPY): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-008918

6k yen!? As much as I love Metal Gear Solid, that's too much for a Figma. I'm probably going to stick with Revoltech and Nendo Snakes. Actually, you can get both of those for the price of this one Figma:

Revoltech Snake (2320 JPY): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-006429

Nendo Snake (3490 JPY): http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-007324

(if interested, order tomorrow, Nov 1, so you can combine shipping when Nendo Snake releases late Nov)
Has anybody ordered from Good Smile before? I noticed for Snake (pre-ordering is currently closed) they offered pre-order bonus items. Are these actually made by Figma or something Good Smile is producing and providing with the figure?

The extra items are a handgun and extra cardboard box (the regular version comes with a cardboard box as well, but this bonus one says Figma on the side). You only get these extras if you ordered direct from GSC. They will ship with Snake but won't be packaged inside his Figma box.

Btw, Figma is a line of figures, not a manufacturer. Max Factory is making Figma Snake, and MF is a subsidiary of GSC.

Regarding the shop itself: 1) you're always going to be paying retail price with them, 2) their flat-rate shipping is expensive if you're only ordering one or two things, and 3) they have notoriously lousy shipping-- delays, bad packing jobs, etc. (it's a good thing that their customer service is great otherwise…).

I order from them at least once a year, typically for Wonder Festival exclusives. They aren't terrible, but you should be aware of that store's downsides. Caveat emptor and alla that.

Thank you both for the info.

Nendo Snake is releasing 1/21.

I didn't hear about that Yoshi before either. Looks nice, though I'm still wary of SHF figures.

The Sailor Moon ones are especially nice (they still haven't announced Pluto yet, though -_-), and I like my P4A Elizabeth, too (ETA: Whoops, forgot that Liz is technically a D-Arts. Close enough?). Sometimes they are kind of overpriced for what you get, and figmas are a tiny bit better, but SHFs aren't all that bad.

Yoshi's my favorite Mario character, but I'm not too crazy about the joints on this figure, so I'm undecided about whether or not to get him. Chances seem good that he'll drop in price after release, so I'm going to wait and see how he turns out.

Last edited by a moderator:
SHF Mario did not get good reviews. Very limited posability and only one faceplate. Yoshi looks like he'll be better. The joints don't bother me much as long as they allow for good posing. I'll wait for user feedback before picking this up.

I came close to getting SHF Mario a few times, but I found that the World of Nintendo one served my purposes just fine. Not terribly poseable, but they look pretty solid on my Nintendo shelf.

Now if we get an SHF Bowser with some solid articulation, I'll never stop buying it.

On a side note, did Bandai just cancel D-Arts and incorporate it into Figuarts?  Because otherwise I don't understand why Mario and co. are figuarts, it's not like they share a traditional figuarts body or anything.

Now that I think about it, that's a good point. Video game characters are typically released as D-Arts, not Figuarts.

Haven't been on this thread for a while, but I just wanted to say I finally got my Figuarts Broly the other day..... and it is amazing. First of all I had to have him naturally by my name haha but yeah he is just such an amazing figure. Such a massive one with such great articulation.

I currently have him choking out Goku and shoving aside Piccolo at the same time looking like he is just brushing both off. I love it. The pictures are on my phone and I am at work but I will try to put one up later. Between that Broly and then my Vash reprint preorder for March I have used up my funds for a while that I have set aside for figures!

I have a SHF Figuarts Mario with a World of Nintendo Yoshi. I think they work well together, so I won't pick up SHF Yoshi. I also have a World of Nintendo Bowser. It's pretty great and a SHF version would have to be much better if I'm going to pick it up. SHF Luigi is on my list too, but I'm not in a rush to get him.

In other Japanese Video Game Figure news, I just got a payment and shipping request for Play Arts Kai Tifa and Barret. I got in Red XIII a week ago and he's awesome. Now just waiting for Cloud (who looks absolutely fantastic) and I hope they announce the rest of the Advent Children characters at some point. Sephiroth is an eventual release, but I'd like to see Cid. I wonder if they would do a Cait Sith.

Because of this, I'm about to sell off my regular Play Arts of Advent Children figures, but I am now trying to hunt down affordable game versions of Sephiroth and Vincent. It really sucks that Square Enix changed the scale when they made Play Arts Kai,

finally placed my first preorder with amiami. I'm excited for figma snake! i chose SAL registered with paypal payment. any idea what would be an estimated payment to CA? hoping its not gonna be like $80 coz bigbadtoystore has preorders for this figure at $90 now but thats excluding shipping and tax.

i should have preordered figma kirito re released but couldn't pull the trigger. i don't know why. maybe I'm not that too attached to him as i thought i was when i first got hooked with SOA. oh well.

This is actually exactly what they did. D-Arts is gone now.

Figma Snake at AmiAmi is 6060yen, and SALR to US for a single Figma should be about 1190yen, so you're looking at a total of 7250yen. Snake doesn't come out until April so it's hard to know what the exchange rate will be then. If you were paying for him today, the PayPal rate is 1 USD = 115 JPY, so your final cost would be $63.

Interesting. Wonder if that has anything to do with stuff like the Mega Man lines dying down. The popularity certainly seemed to be waning anyway, but I wanted that damned Ride Armor for Vile that I kept seeing pop up at toy expos.

Thank you so much for the info man. If everything goes well with this 1st transaction, il probably be buying all my stuff from amiami. Us stores like amazon and gundamplanet (where o get kits) usually are more but i feel comfortable ordering from them coz of reputation. But yeah 60-65 is a nice conversion price to start. Hehe

I guess that's fine that D-Arts is gone if they're still making videogame related stuff as Figuarts.  I always thought they had way too many lines anyway.  When I got my first Ultra-Art Ultraman back in the day, I was really surprised it was slightly out of scale with Figuarts, with a whole different (and at that time inferior) body design.

Speaking of stuff that came out way back when, we're never getting articulated One Piece Figuarts again, are we?  I mean I guess there's a little hope since they just did a non-Zero Naruto and Sasuke, but man it's been a while (and we never got a Zoro!)

As Figuarts? Possibly not. But other articulated One Piece figures (Luffy and Law, at least) are on their way under MegaHouse's "Variable Action Heroes" line. MSRP is over 8,000 yen, though, so they're quite pricey.

I think the only intent was to consolidate their figure brands. If they produce any more Mega Man stuff, it'd be under their Figuarts line, similar to how they shifted their Pokemon offerings from D-Arts to Figuarts.

I like the Megahouse line, but the price and in yet another scale... plus there are so many characters, if they make even a fraction of the ones I want I'll be broke (but they probably won't get past 5 or so).  So we'll see how far past Law and Luffy they get.  I was actually surprised the Figuarts Zero line apparently did so well, considering PoP was already making One Piece statues.

To be fair, the PoP line is massive in scale compared to Figuarts Zero.  Still, there's always room for more One Piece lines here in Japan.  Most every hobby store I go to here is at least 50% One Piece stuff, especially the rental case shops.

That's what I was thinking. I'm mostly just sore about my ride armor.

Dunno if it's okay to post here, but we actually ended up with an extra Nendoroid Satsuki Kiryuin if anyone might be interested. Lemme know if so, or if you'd like me to remove this.

Isn't video games but I just got back into my Godzilla kick and I'm browsing though Amazon now looking for films and I see all of these (presumed) oop Figuarts Godzilla figures of him and other characters from his franchise. They look great, what a shame they don't make those now as I'd definitely pick some up but not for those prices I see resellers have them at.

If you're talking about Monsterarts a lot of them probably came out for as much as you see them for.

I've been considering the Destroyah and Biollante ones for forever. They look incredibly awesome.

There are lots of Godzilla video games (and they're making a new one for PS3/PS4) so this is a great thread to talk about them.

Just saw this on amazon

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00M1MP6K4

Figma Kirito. Maybe from the rereleased stock and the order from amazon must have gotten delayed or something. Finally decided to preorder one. Hehe
Nice. I have him and he's great in Figma form. Get Figma Asuna's upcoming re-release as well if you don't already have her. They should always be paired ^^

Last edited by a moderator:
Yeah i was thinking of getting her. Shes still up on amiami. But since kirito popped out in amazon maybe asuna will too.

US shops will have her re-release. Like with Kirito though, it's cheaper to pre-order from Japan thanks to the great exchange rate we've been enjoying. Plus you get her quicker.

It's funny that even with her upcoming 3500yen re-release, Figma Asuna is still going for 10k in secondhand market.

Quick question. I want the figure of Junko w/ Monkuma in front, but I have seen bad & good reviews on its quality. How do I determine if it's okay to purchase? Also why are the DBZ Tamashii Nations S.H. figures so expensive versus the Figure arts Zero?

Wish I saw this thread before buying my figma samus and nendo link and snake from hobbysearch. Is amiami cheaper when it comes to shipping?

Oh and my nendo snake just shipped.

Are you talking about this one?: http://myfigurecollection.net/item/142995

MFC is the best place to go for feedback on figures. Check the average score, comments, and the articles section usually has in-depth reviews.

SHFiguarts are posable while Figuarts Zero are static. They also come with more accessories.

Wish I saw this thread before buying my figma samus and nendo link and snake from hobbysearch. Is amiami cheaper when it comes to shipping?
Hobby Search has a little cheaper shipping than AmiAmi but not by enough to offset the usually higher figure costs than AmiAmi. HLJ is the best when it comes to shipping price, though their figures are also more expensive. AmiAmi uses the best boxes and lots of packing materials, offering better protection but also increasing box weight and therefore shipping cost.

I usually order from AmiAmi. Even if their shipping is a bit higher than the rest, their lower figure costs and better packaging make up for it.

Oh and my nendo snake just shipped.
Paid for him this morning. With our awesome exchange rate, he came out to around $30. I did have to spend extra for EMS (4140yen, ~$36) since I had so many other figures in this order (Figma Motoko, Figma Saber 2.0, Nendo Homucifer, and two small prizes). Will get them quick though ^^
