Joystiq: BS Announcement - IBM shipping processors
Dont know if any of you saw them apologise:
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/08/an-apology-and-a-note-on-hype/
How the fuck did Joystiq not expect the hype to grow, espically when Robert Summa kept adding to it? I only read the first three lines but as soon as I saw "Generated an immense (and unexpected) amount of interest".

Bullshit... they knew exactly what they were doing, and expected all of it.

That whole apology makes it seems like Joystiq had no clues what the news would be until 12:01 am when they knew it all along, or did they just think IBM chips were so amazing they had to make a big deal about it? That apology is odd.
I did not realize he was stoking the coals in the comments section. That helps it make some more sense to me.

Trust me, I understand pre-launch hype. I would have had a 360 on launch day if I didn't have to help my wife tear down her high school's fall play set. I couldn't get in line soon enough. Luckily, I got my 360 on Dec. 4 so it wasn't too much of a wait. I'll get a Wii at or near launch too.

This whole debacle makes me kind of glad that E3 is being toned down. I hated how everybody kept major news quiet so they could tell it at E3. I understand using announcements to build hype etc, but now we've got announcements about announcements which is getting ridiculous. The Gears of War thing on the Epic boards was a joke. I hope in the future news is simply released when it is instead of news about news.
Agreed on all counts.

Woah - your wife is in high school?!?!? Nice score! hahaha :D
Just so you guys know, Robert got fired from all this. Now, he's blogging on destructoid.com

http://www.destructoid.com/free-at-last-thank-god-almighty-im-free-at-last
Heh, almost seems like the whole Dan Rather scandal with CBS News. Who is really to blame, the media outlet for knowing what the news was and not doing anything to calm the hype or the reporter for knowing what it was and contributing to the hype?

It's like what RelentlessRolento said, this thing has blown up more than it should. There should have been a quick apology from the site (not the long one they gave because like Robert stated in that blog, it does look stupid) and either Robert shouldn't have been fired or he shouldn't post his opinion on this issue. All sides looks very unproffessional at this point.

I also love how once a week we have to hear about how that one guy goes to Wharton at UPenn. Great school, but come on man, nobody cares.

wow, Robert Summa is a douche. I don't think it's far fetched that they fired him-- he screwed up big time and soiled the site's name. But his response to being fired is childish (or immature adult-ish.) so obvious he screwed up, but his whole post is him trying to take all the responsibility off his shoulders.

"I never wanted to be there in the first place"

Joystiq is and always will be a waste of time... like I said in like the second or third post in this thread, "Why would someone give Joystiq a huge exclusive?".

Looks like I called this one straight from the gate.
Man, he sounds like a whiney douchebag. Good riddance Robert, you ass, I'm glad you were fired.

I forgive you Joystiq.
QFT. fuck that guy.

Firing Robert is a pretty heavy handed response from Joystiq, especially considering they're are as much at fault as he was. At any point between 1 (the time of Robert's first post) and 12 they could have stepped in a put an end to all the speculation but they didn't. This was nothing more than a ploy to drive up traffic to their site and to pass it off as anything else is bullshit. That's why the apology is worthless.

I honestly don't think it had much to do with Joystiq trying to drive up traffic for a couple days. I'm pretty sure it became apparent the spike in traffic wasn't worth the hit Joystiq took.

Half of any comments I read at Joystiq or any other blog are blasting the author or the site for bias and sensationalism, but the people continue to read it.

The fact remains, they could have stopped it as dc said, but they chose not to. All an editor would have to do is add an update/comment that the news was not nearly as important as everyone was expecting, or even just linked to the outside articles posting the info. Firing the author is just a good case of scapegoating.

This is why Robert Summa got fired... they probably thought the backlash would be minor and all the new visitors checking out Joystiq would be worth it. When the backlash was much greater than they expected, here comes the opportunity to pass the buck to Robert Summa, offer a BS apology, and cover their own tails.

Either way, Joystiq would have came out the winner.

Not only that, but look at how many people across different forums are talking about Joystiq, where usually people don't even care.

LOUD NOISES!!

In case there was any doubt about Robert Summa being a whiney prick, here's an interview that he conducted with Perrin Kaplan at the NYC Wii event.

http://gonintendo.com/?p=5698

He conducts one of the worst, most awkward, hard to watch interviews that I've ever seen in my life. I couldn't even make it through the entire thing.

I hate to give him any more attention, because by now the internet has already forgotten who he is, and his 15 minutes of infamy are up. But this man is not a journalist. I felt sorry for Perrin having to talk to this loser for so long, with a camera 2 inches away from her face.
