just watched the history of Final Fantasy...

There is no debate because we all know that Daikatana whoops every single FF game in the ass and therefore claims the title of

BEST FINAL FANTASY GAME EVAR!

Phoebe

Phoebe (フェイ, Fei?, Faye in Japan) "possesses a warrior's heart and a princess's grace." She first meets Benjamin at the Libra Temple, where she's looking to restore the frozen town of Aquaria, and in turn save her trapped grandfather, Spencer. She can be impetuous, as when she collapses a tunnel (despite Benjamin's protests) while trying to save Captain Mac. She fights using a claw, which she later gives to Benjamin, after which she battles with a crossbow. Phoebe is at Benjamin's side when he battles the Dark King.

I just watched that feature-and I really liked it! I don't think it could have been much more thorough. Geez, just watching Final Fantasy 6-10 again was awesome :)
It's a known fact that anyone who started with Final Fantasy VII knows nothing.
Why? You have to start somewhere, plus newer gamers are more likely to have started on newer versions (many then go on to play the rest of the series).
FF6 mops the shit with that pathetic excuse of gameplay FF7 had.
IMO that's not possible, as 6 and 7 share almost exactly the same "system". That was one of my minor complaints about 7 (though it was fun the first time, and 7 did so much revolutionary stuff with presentation that it was easy to forgive!)
Oh and I don't count XI as a part of the series since it was an MMO.
Yeah, it makes me mad that that's even labeled as "Final Fantasy 11" instead of just "Final Fantasy Online".

I mentally just think of 10-2 as being 11, since that makes a lot more sense.
I don't like FF1 as much as you relative to the others, but the way the party system works, it really did add replayablility! I played through it tons of times with different combos, including an "all magic" party with a Red Mage, a White Mage, and 2 Black Mages.
IMO the thief/Ninja was probably the most worthless class (then maybe the Red Mage?) but even they were very useable!
I had a hard time with Monks (or whatever they were called in the US release) until I figured out I needed to unequip their weapons! Still kind of weird!

Regarding Mystic Quest-I assume it wasn't even really made by the same team? I'd actually love to play through it if it's ever rereleased. I remember renting it, and I thought the system of moving characters across almost like a board-game or Super Mario Bros. 3 type world was pretty neat.

Waitagoddamnedminute.

Are people genuinely debating about which FF game is the worst based on the angstiness/psychological isolation of the main character?

That's like ranking basketball games based on there being a basketball in the game.

I can't wait to try out XII once I get my fucking exam out of the way. It's sitting there looking so lonely right now. Oh well...anyway, while I am an unabashed Final Fantasy fan (not so much that I am perpetually unemployed yet able to afford Final Fantasy tattoos...not to single anyone out, of course), I try to be realistically critical of the games.

I've liked them all, admittedly, but what looks the most promising about XII is that it appears to have depth and complexity. You can wank on the gambit system, but there's a certain degree of strategy involved in that. I'm hoping that this game has enough depth to avoid the hallmark problems of damn near EVERY FF game: the linearity, combined with level grinding, that just makes the game more of a task than anything else.

Playing some of the FF games (even 4, which was my favorite), I couldn't help but feel as if the game was parenting me; telling me where to go, what to do, what to buy, etc. A few months back I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean in the theaters. I sat behind some mouthbreathers who were discussing the plot intricacies of a goddamned DISNEY MOVIE, as if there was some suggested subplot, instead of every twist and development being played out on the screen. I feel that FF can be the same way: if you feel shocked by any plot twist, or find yourself at a loss for where you need to go next, you're just a fool (or fail to find yourself so bored with a game that you aren't following it). It can be too coddling, IMO.

And the games seem to encourage grinding: enemies in a given area are only so tough, and then the boss of the area is a nightmare. So, you go level grind for 30 mins-2 hours, and mop the floor with the boss, using little more than *attack*attack*attack*attack combos (even the white magicians, y'know?).

XII better not be that way, or else I'll be failing Hanger 18 on expert by the end of the month instead.

For the record, although I thought FFX was a very fun game that went far beyond a Satre level of philosophical bullshit, it's my least favorite because of Wakka. I don't think I would have minded him if there were no voice acting in the game...but there is, so he's goddamned annoying.

Darn, I really liked him! I liked all the characters, but he was just a great guy.

I (usually) hate experience collecting/level grinding, and like games to just flow naturally, where you're tough enough if you basically just go where you're supposed to go. IMO most of the recent games haven't been bad with this, but the earlier ones were awful in that regard-FF4 (not the easier original US release) and 5 were especially bad-actually worse than FF2!

I've taken to listening to podcasts while experience collecting-used to watch shows when I had picture in picture.

Personally, my favorite by far is FFVI. I don't really hate any of the series, but I do tend to think FFVII is overrated. Not because it's a bad game or anything, but just because the story was basically nonsensical, and the actual battle game play was nowhere near as complicated as VI. It seemed like a step back in the series in all respects except for presentation. A step back is still a good game, though.

personally I thought FF Mystic Quest was the original so therefore best. Again whil ehte graphics was not the best the game used the FF8 break away system where as you battle the enemy show there weakness.

Also in Nystic Quest they had all areas you would encounter in most FF games.

Then again I would also say V since V is has that whole Ganon darkword thing going on.

Again VI was preety good since it showed off the artwork more so but was really limited to other actiivities. It wa more about preparing to Kefka.

However FF7 would have been best if they had only stick to the story and the whole game took place in Midgar. FF7 is really FFVI in 3d and while there is lots to do I did get bored of the theme and the challlenges. Also the fact that they killed off Aeris just blew the game off track along with the Holy Devil theme of our world.

FF8 like guy said is the best the fact it looks really nice, you can battle all you want, There is mulitple challenges. Only one Bahamut. Many mini games other then the colloseum and repeats like FF7 did. Just ike FF6 you can end a battle really fast if you know what you are doing.

However what reallyu sucks about all Final Fantasy games is that after finishing the game there is not that much to do afterwards. I mean yes it is that easy to reacht he end of all FF games compared to other RPG games however the Final Fantasy is too short no matter which game.

Personally I got tired of playing when they started having DUBBS. I hate the english voices. I miss acting out the voices and singing along. In short Sqauresoft is like todays Disney with Final Fantasy..

I like love the voice acting (at least 95% of it) and love that they can do that. I also think the difficulty in the FF games is about right-I sure wouldn't want them harder. There are always extra things you can do if you want a hard challenge (ie Weapon, etc.)

I also wouldn't call them "short". They've mostly all been 55-75+ hours for me. That's not "short" in my book.

Second, I actually (brace yourself, folks) agree with the voice acting comment.

I started playing Final Fantasy when the first game was released for the NES. Does anyone remember that contest that Nintendo Power was running around the time FF was first released in the states how you and 3 of your friends could win a trip to do a real life Final Fantasy adventure?

FFIV was hands down my favorite. I look back at that game as having some of my favorite video game moments ever. FFVI was damn good too. I enjoyed VII, but in no way does it deserve the high praise and respect it always garners.

Then FFVIII came around and the wheels fell off. That game was nothing but an exercise in tedium. I never did finish it, and despite owning IX, X, X-2, XI I haven't played a Final Fantasy game since (not counting Tactics; I loved Tactics).

However, I am looking forward to FFV on the GBA. I never got around to playing the PSX port, and I think the gameplay and story execution will resemble my two favorite games of the series.

I just watched the films. The voice reminds me of those stupid movies we'd watch in high school. You know the ones that were ten times worse than the stuff they put on the History or Discovery channels? They seemed to be too short for the entire history. They did a good job of explaining each's particular innovations and even explained that whole FFIII is really FFVI thing. It would've been nice to show at least a screen shot of the final boss from each game.

7 didn't work for me. I never liked it back in the day and I still don't like it now. I liked 8 but only because of the context of what was going on at the time. I look back at it now and I wouldn't want to play it again anytime soon. I'd like to give 9 another chance. I started it a long time ago but never got to finish it. I wasn't really that blown away by it but it felt solid. 10's my favorite so far. I loved being able to swap out guys at any time during a battle. I still haven't played 1-6 but I look forward to getting those out of the way sometime in the future.
I have never had to grind in a FF game, you have to be really bad at video games to need to do so.
For me there's always been at least a LITTLE bit. 2, and 9 I spent only a couple of hours (out of 55+). 4 (not the easy version), 1, 5, and 6 all require serious experience collecting.

Just started FF12 last night. So far I'm both impressed by it, and a little worried.
I have never had to grind in a FF game, you have to be really bad at video games to need to do so.
Please. Next tuesday comes FFIII DS. You'll get your chance yet.
I didn't think it was possible to beat an FF game prior to 7 without grinding.

That's just what you did.
Yeah, really. I simply don't believe that that poster really did no grinding in FF1 or 4 (or any of them really). 2 actually had the least I've ever done, but I still found a great place to get experience and spent an hour refighting this same enemy over and over.

Final Fantasy is so lame. They practically wasted our time reproducing the same game over and over again. The last good Final Fantasy game was probably FFV where they introduced Moogles. Then Six was too short but had the best graphics and was really creative in ending the series.

Seven was okay for the neo Final Fantasy
Some Game Magazine that nobody probably reads anymore
As we slowly Drag RPG's into the 20th century

Then Eight had the whole Angle theme while Evangelion was on air along with Tamigotchi Virus spreading slowly.

Moogles were introduced in FFIII for the Famicom.
