Holy crap! theirs a car floating around

According to MSNBC the death total is already over five thousand if you combine the countries collected. 2000+ in Sri-Lanka and 1000+ in India.

This reminds me of the Great Tsunami that hit Japan a few centuries ago. There may have been 20,000 that died in that one. A Japanese Doctor wrote of his experiences and that's the primary record of that disaster. It was amazingly devestating, and this Tsunami sounds like it was just as devastating.

Here's a simulation of that Tsunami from the 18th century.

Yeah I was watching this this morning. It's so devastating. They were saying that people on the beaches sunbathing had the tsunami come upon them and of course many just didn't make it.

And I was mad about the snowstorm today. Those poor people!

orology and Geophysical Agency in Jakarta.

an 8.5 holy shaq-fu

Yeah, I heard about this as well. I felt really sad when I heard about this. My family in Indaia should be fine (cause they don't live near the coastal areas), but I will call them just to make sure.

EDIT: I called, they are all fine. :D

im glad your family is fine...this is pretty rough, hearing this after waking up from the dream i just had isnt the best way to start a day =o\
HOLY SHIT!
8.5 magnitude?! WTF?!
That is some messed up shit. That is oneeee biiiiiig tidal wave. After Christmas too, nonetheless.
Well for them, they are most likely Hindhu or Buddhist, so they probably don't celebrate Christmas.

But still, man, I'm sorry for those people. :(

one thing that kinds of bugs me is that Americans were surprised when a lot of the rest of the world didnt blink when 9/11 happened...and now the news that 6000 people died is wedged in between "The day for Christmas Returns" and "2 people died on snowmobiles".

just kinda bugs me. If i practiced religion, i'd be praying for them.

I guess Jesus Christ got a little jealous, and showed no pity at all.

You're wrong, terrorists did it. :)

I think whenever something affects ones home country it always hits harder. The difference is that one is a natural disaster (which does NOT lessen the tragedy) and one was instigated by men. You can't get mad a nature because nature is neither good nor evil. Earthquakes, tsunami, tornadoes, wild fires, and hurricanes have all caused several thousand deaths this year. Death by hijacked plane is unusual. I actually thought the rest of the free world showed a great deal of compassion. I'll leave it at that though so as not to stray to far off topic.

I read about the fishermen caught in the tsunami. That had to be scary. The tsunami will really affect people once more photos and video of the destruction are shown. It's harder for people in society to reate to something until they see it for themselves.

Man this is horrible, the magnitude was insanely high. I Feel bad for all the people that are homeless and lost their loved ones though.

Yeah, it's well over ten thousans. I can see it going to 20,000.

It's a shame that with all our techniology we couldn't get warning out that this Tsunami was coming.

Also, to show its power, usually fishermen and individuals out at sea are the safest from tsunami's. Very rarely do you get a wave strong enough that it's reminiscent of the Posiden Adventure. Usually the Tsunami appears as ripples on the surface as the major swell moves deadly under the sea. Only rising near land.

Scientists said the death toll might have been reduced if India and Sri Lanka had been part of an international warning system designed to advise coastal communities that a potentially killer wave was approaching. Although Thailand is part of the system, the west coast of its southern peninsula does not have the system's wave sensors mounted on ocean buoys.

Now Fox News (take it with a grain of salt) is reporting that the death toll is over 11,000. This is un-fucking believable. I went through the Northridge quake in 1994 and I remember what a nightmare that was. And it was "only" a 6 pointer. This sucker is now a 9.0. Seriously unbelievable. My condolenses go out to everyone involved.

Speaking of warning systems, the thing I don't understand is why there were no earlier warnings to go to high ground. It took an hour for the Tsunami to hit the shore after the initial Earthquake. The Earthquake was easily felt by Sumatreans.

I understand lack of information, but if you are on the tropical rim and you have an Earthquake in your region you stay away from the water and head to high ground. Even if you're a tourist go inland and see the sites. I understand the lack of practability because the Pacific Rim is wracked by Earthquakes. But supposedly the epicenter was right off the coast. People should have recognized this was a major event and stayed away from the shore.

It's a shame.

I think he was just mentioning the old commercials from the 70's with a Native American crying at the pollution. He wasn't discussing the recent tsunami. I don't think any disrespect was intended.

(And when you think of that imagery, it reminds me of their use of it on the Simpsons, which at least deserves a snicker.

I heard about this tsunami from a friend. He also said that he had read (don't know where, but if I find out, I'll post it) that actor/martial artist Jet Li was in one of the affected areas, and that no one has been able to get in contact with him. Also, supposedly, Mr. Li never learned how to swim, which doesn't leave me with a good feeling. Hopefully, he's OK.

It's so sad to see so many people killed. I guess that water can take away life as well as give life. It's so sad.

I heard the death toll is around 13,000 now with people dead in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Africa.

I would be sad if Jet Li was hit by the tsunami, he is one of my favorite actor. This tsunami makes me feel lucky to be alive and that life is precious and it can go away in any minute.

That reminds me of the story about Jackie Chan. He was supposed to be shooting the ending scene for a film on top of the World Trade Center the morning the jets flew into it.

I don't remember what it was but something came up the day before that forced him to reschedule. Thus he was saved.

The rumor has not been confirmed as true or untrue yet...

http://www.snopes.com/rumors/jackchan.htm

According to the Chinese press, Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan was slated to begin production on his film Nosebleed on September 11. The plot of the movie, which cast Jackie as a window washer at the World Trade Center who falls for a waitress (or bartender) working at the Windows of the World restaurant (atop the north tower), would have had him filming scenes at the WTC beginning at 7 A.M. — less than two hours before a hijacked airliner slammed into the north tower. But, according to the Singapore Straits Times, "because his scriptwriter failed to deliver the screenplay containing the World Trade Center scene," Chan opted to go to Toronto instead to begin work on another film, The Tuxedo....

However, the narrowness of Jackie's escape (if indeed there was an escape at all) is subject to question. The film Nosebleed was dropped by New Line Cinema and only picked up by MGM in May 2001 and was therefore unlikely to have gone into production as early as September 11. The Tuxedo did begin production in Toronto on September 10, the day before the terrorist attacks on America, but its schedule was arranged well in advance (at least as far back as July), not at the last minute. If Jackie ever was slated to begin shooting at the World Trade Center on September 11, it was almost certainly as part of a plan drawn up and abandoned long before September 2001.

In an eerie coincidence, however, the screenplay for Nosebleed had Chan's character battling terrorists bent on blowing up the Statue of Liberty (or, according to some news reports, the World Trade Center itself).

Freaky, I say the film was going to be a cover up for terrorists to actually do they're dirty work but Jackie realized this and set to work trying to stop them, sadly he failed...

I bet if Jackie was on one of those flight he would have fucked up those terrorists. And that is all for my random latenight thought... for now.

About the tsunami, I saw it on tv earlier tonight. Helluva thing, very sad indeed. I think even if they had the early warning system that there would have still been a hefty death toll, I mean you're talking about waves that move at very fact speeds. Think of how long it would take to get all those people out of harms way, it took days to exacuate Florida this summer anytime there was a hurricane. I know the exacuation wouldn't have to be as extensive but I'm still betting that it would take more than a couple minutes. Sadly, this is one of those things that almost couldn't be avoided.
im just curious, how are they comming up with these ever raising death tolls?
I'm wondering about the same thing too. Where do they find more dead bodies?
