I was dazzled today reading some horsecrap article over at IGN about MS's 5 biggest fails. 4/5 were all because of Kinect, not because of the content of the game.
I've never understood this wild rage some people have over motion control gaming. It's like somehow your beloved COD or Final Fantasy game is going to be discontinued because the developer decided to make KinectPOW. This pushes innovation. If you don't like the path it's taking, fine. Don't get on board. It seems like so many of these gaming journalists think it's cutesy to shit all over Kinect because they think their 13-25 male demographic will eat it up. Maybe they will. But gaming demographics have radically shifted. It's not the dork in a basement anymore, it's family entertainment. If I'm playing LA Noire, my wife will stop for a couple of minutes in passing to watch. If I'm playing Kinect Sports, she's going to try and jump in and play. It doesn't mean Rockstar is going to evaporate. She's just not their target market.
I've been really satisfied with Kinect for the most part. My son and wife enjoy it, I enjoy it, and it's a nice change to get off the couch and be active. To me there's more of a sense of accomplishment in kicking the imaginary ball, than pressing X fast enough to initiate the kick animation.
This isn't directed at any of the recent posters, just my pro-Kinect rant in the best thing I could find as the appropriate thread.
(Re: Kinect Fun Labs, this was actually the first time I felt KinectFail. I'm probably overdue for calibrating it because I think it got moved, and with the sun now overhead, it comes in the skylights more than it did earlier in the year, but I couldn't get it to track well, had the body "scan" turn out pretty bad, and really felt like it was poorly done. I'm going to give it another run after calibrating my room this evening. Finger tracking and AR applications sound fascinating to me though)
