Kinect - Gen. Info & Discussion
jess (and everyone else) here is a tip: put the Kinect Sensor on top of your tv if possible, that'll give you 1-2" extra leverage. My friend only had about 8 feet available and upon doing this method he ended up with a few extra inches so it worked out well. As for your shape, just follow the onscreen instructor there isn't much to listen to other than "good job" and other motivational words like that.
Thanks for the information. I don't have an iPhone (I wish), but it's pretty cool that they offer that.

I think I'll get the Kinect when as I see a sub-$100 offer on Amazon. I don't mind an open-box unit. But I may request a Kinect game or two from Goozex first. I'm first in line for Kinectimals, Dance Central, Kinect Sports, etc. Just have to activate it.

Im getting major hype for Yoostar 2.. Comes out today, 80 clips on disc + 100 DLC at launch.. might be a keeper for parties (anyone seeing a trend here? kinect is the new wii, except its actually worth a damn).

Amazon's Warehouse Deals not uncommonly has sub $100 ones, and more often close to $100. Perhaps you knew that.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I have no problems with an open box unit.

I'm just trying to figure out if I should activate a couple Kinect games to get on Goozex (as I'm first in line), then get the Kinect as soon as I have the games.

I would have already done this, but with 3DS coming out at the end of the month, I've got $300 tied up in it and Nintendogs+Cats. So I think, for the sake of reason and moolah, I may force myself to wait on Kinect until at least April.

check your local craigslist. I bought my Kinect for $105 and it came with everything just like the $150+tax retail except mine was opened. Game was sealed but even then, if the game is open it's still a good deal. Your Shape Fitness Evolved has the dlc for 160 ms points ($2) each so that'll add more to the gameplay as well.

Thanks to a most-impressive tax refund this year, I went ahead and bit on Kinect. Got an open box, like new condition one from Amazon for $103. Should be here Saturday. Can't wait!

Thanks to everyone for their feedback on captions and audio for Kinect. I'm hopeful I'll be able to enjoy it. :bouncy:

I'm not a fan of dealing on Craigslist. As a girl, it's just not as safe for me, and I don't like meeting up in parking lots or going to someone's house to pick something up.

But more importantly, I bought from Amazon so that I can have a return policy. My living room setup is pretty small, and my hearing problems could be an issue as well. I play 360 now with headphones, but that's not quite as much an option with Kinect, what with the requirement to move around.

By the way, all the YourShape DLC is on sale this week for $2 a piece - much more reasonable than the crazy standard prices.
By the way, all the YourShape DLC is on sale this week for $2 a piece - much more reasonable than the crazy standard prices.
Yeah, I'm thinking of jumping on all of it. I'm second in line to get the game from Goozex, so it may be a couple weeks or so before I get my copy. 640 for all the DLC seems far more reasonable. I can't complain at that price.

Correct, I picked up all the dlc for Your Shape and so far it's fun, good workout! Jess, check your local craigslist. As I stated previously, I found my Kinect for $105 with the game and everything complete. If you don't need the spare adapter (for older xbox 360's to plug into the wall) you can sell it or trade it in @ gamestop for credit I think. Either way, hope you find 1 soon and good luck on getting the games. Some of the games are going on sale @ bb soon but if you're using goozex then even better. C-ya online!

FYI, anyone taking part in the Your Shape Calorie Crushing Challenge should see a free DLC code in their email due to all the problems with the contest. I just purchased some of the DLC this week so I haven't redeemed my code to find out which one it is. Has anyone received this and redeemed it?

Just tried my first session with Kinect at my home today. I have to say I enjoyed myself. As my husband was still sleeping, I wore headphones with a long cord so that I could hear the game better. This was, naturally, slightly dangerous due to the level of activity involved.

I only had time to mess around a little bit, but I tried out the bundled Kinect Adventures game, which is all I have right now. I tried out two of the games, the one where you're smashing the boxes and targets on the wall, and the one where you're rafting.

I was pretty delighted at the level of responsiveness. It's certainly more interactive and immersive than the Wii, and HD only helps things along. I wish the motion controls for menus were a little faster, but I'm glad I don't have to use the Kinect for navigating the entire Dashboard.

I'm tempted to get Your Shape this week during the Best Buy sale, rather than wait for Goozex to give it to me. Although I'm second in line, that could take a while in the Goozex world. And I'm not sure I can stand to wait weeks for the game, considering I just bought all the DLC that was on sale this week. I got the Kinect largely as an exercise alternative. I lost 30 lbs with Wii Fit once, and Kinect seems primed to perform just as well.

when you finally get dance central you'll wonder why every other kinect game doesn't have menus like DC

I'm considering buying all the Your Shape DLC, though I don't have the game yet. I keep checking Amazon Warehouse deals and never quite pulling the trigger even when it shows up. I'm struggling with buying DLC for a game I don't have yet nor know if I'll like. Would hate to get the game, decide I don't like it, and then have all this DLC I'd have no use for.

As soon as there's a deal for Yoostar, I'm getting it. Seems like a perfect connect game.

I had You're In the Movies and it was mildly entertaining.

heck i am still wondering why other games dont allow you to use controller and kinect at the same time.

I went ahead and bought it all. I watched some gameplay videos and am relatively certain I'll enjoy the game. I'm first in line to get it from Goozex. :D

yeah, the worst part of playing Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports is getting through the menus

Jess, glad you're having fun with Kinect & enjoying it. Dance central is probably my least favorite game that I have but I like them all. I'm looking to get Kinect Joy Ride, any of you have it and if so what are your thoughts?

Joyride is insanely shallow and not much substance. It also hurts your arms after a while. If it was 10 bucks on XBLA i'd recommend it, but not for anything over 10. I have Yoostar 2 coming tomorrow in the mail, but i hear its pretty awful for putting you into the video, with blocks all around you. The videos they show to promote the game were on perfect green screens. I dunno, we'll see, i hope its good. There is also some DLC available for it already.

I only own Kinect Adventures. My brother-in-law (who works for Microsoft, yay!) is loaning me Your Shape: Fitness Evolved tomorrow. I'm first in line on Goozex for Kinect Sports, Your Shape, and Kinectimals, so I expect to be receiving them all in the next few weeks.

I'm not interested in Joy Ride, really. I'm not a fan of racing games anyway, and the overall opinion on this title is that it's not worth it. I downloaded the demo, I believe, so I'll try it.

What the hey. Decided to buy a couple of the add-ons to Your Shape. I know I'm going to get it eventually. Still, decided not to buy all of them just in case I don't end up liking the "game". I picked up the boxing and new year, new you ones. Plus, not entirely sure I want to dance Bollywood style. :) :)

joy ride, dance central and yourshape demos all on the kinect adventures disk

I played Kinect Adventures after a couple months of not playing it. I barely have any achievements in it. It's actually a pretty good game. It's a good showcase of the technology and makes you get off the couch.

I downloaded the lastest update and it seems to work pretty well, not sure if they improved the kinect functionality since launch.

Still wondering what they are going to do with Kinect outside of Dance Centra (dance), Kinect Sports (sports), Kinect Adventures (minigames), and workout games.

Kinect Adventures is a fun game. The only thing I don't like about it is how long it takes to get it started up and get into the games. Also, the obstacle course one sucks because, as my nephew found out, you can win every time and get gold, just by jumping up and down in place without trying at all. It doesn't matter if you hit every obstacle or not. I suppose if you try hard you might be able to get a platinum by playing legitimately, but it still took the wind out of the sails of that game.

I ordered a copy of Your Shape: Fitness Evolved from amazon, which is matching the Best Buy deal. It's $34.99 shipped. Not bad at all.

Is there no way to disable all that opening calibration/info in Kinect Adventures? Sure sucks to spend so long just waiting to start playing.

In other news, my husband is picking up Your Shape: Fitness Evolved from my brother-in-law today. I probably won't get to try it until Thursday, but I'm excited!

nope

I don't really have a problem with the menu system in Kinect Adventures or Kinect Sports (a bit with Kinect Sports as it seems to make you go through more menu choices then are necessary) - the menus work well - rather it's the startup time and all the calibration, as utopian notes, in Kinect Adventures. Also the fact that there seems to be no way to skip the opening Microsoft Studios logo animation thing or whatever it is.

I think much of what happens in the startup of Kinect Adventures is just supposed to make you aware of how Kinect works and how your distance from the sensor matters. I wish we could set an option to skip all that.

They probably figured if they make people watch that everytime with Kinect Adventures they would get less calls to Customer Service saying "My Kinect doesn't work!!!!" or "Timmy just punched his sister while playing Kinect!!!!"

It's the price we pay for a pack in.

I feel you on the skipping of the logos, I just want to jam the A button the whole time but there is no A button. Maybe madcatz can make a
peripheral.

You can speed up Kinect Adventures a little by installing it to the hard drive, at least. The minigames will load about 4 seconds faster, for instance.

Had to play Kinectimals a few weeks ago because my daughter was signed in as a "guest" in the game and lost all her progress when she quit the game. She was very disappointed so I played it for a few hours on my day off to try to get her back to where she left off.

I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Between the mini games like ball throwing and fetching, soccer kicking, obstacle courses, RC car driving, and searching for treasure, the time just sort of melted away. It controlled near perfectly, and when my son got home from school, he even wanted to join in for a few events. Although, he probably just wanted to help me finish the damn game so he could play Black Ops. My 5 year old daughter has since played through the game twice, and can't wait for a Kinectimals 2. So, Microsoft already has a claim on another 50 of my dollars.

I'm just wondering where the new games are. Why is it taking so long to get these things in the pipeline when the product has been advertised for such a long time-well before the release? Give me SOMETHING. Maybe even some arcade/downloadable titles? There have to be a shit-ton of tech demos that can be made into downloadable games, right? Like a line cook, or tapper game, or balancing game I can buy for $5 in the marketplace, right? And speaking of that, where the hell is SEGA ? Why haven't they re-issued any of their IP's for kinect play? Rehashes are their specialty, right?

It takes time to make games, and practically everything that was in development ended up as a launch title. Nobody knew how well the Kinect would sell, so now developers are scrambling to make more games for it.

Im sticking by my predictions Kinect arcade games >>> retail games.

Doodle Jump and Gunstringer are just the begining. I really expect a huge arcade push at E3 (summer of xblka and xbla anyone?) along with some cool retail stuff.

I think the one mistake Microsoft made with Kinect was spending too much on advertising (like that weird E3 kinect event) and not enough on games. The could have spent less than 5 million and had 5+ Kinect arcade games ready at launch.

I wonder how much the technology will progress and how much better (or not) the games of Winter 2011 and Winter 2012 will be.

I think most devs took a cautious/suspicious approach and so when Kinect sold well, they had nothing to show for it. Now they'll all be scrambling to get stuff out and... I'm afraid we're probably in for a lot of rushed out the door crap, and some good things mixed in.

I got one of those not terribly well reviewed PDP Kinect TV mounts, having thrown caution to the wind (and because it was an Amazon Warehouse Deal) and it arrived the other day. Tonight I set it up. The most common complaint is that it seems to not work with "thinner" HDTVs. Well, I really don't think my TV is all that thin, but it only worked on it once I wedged 2 lego bricks (one on top of each other) between the lip and the TV. I'm worried they are going to fall out, but they are wedged in there pretty well, so hopefully not. I'm going to see if I can find something better to put there, though.

I had to use the alternate screw mounting point on the arms on the back in order to get it to work with my 32" TV, so I guess its mainly for a larger TV, however it does work using the alternate mount point.

I have to say that Kinect itself looks monstrously big sitting up on top of a 32" TV. It didn't look so crazy big when sitting on the TV stand. Having it up high like that seems to make it stick out like a sore thumb. The mount itself doesn't really look that great either, though it's OK. It does seem to do what it was supposed to do. It's steady and I am able to get "Best", as measured by Kinect Adventures, with less space. I don't have to move my sofa back now. So for now, at least, I'll keep it up there. If I could wall mount it I'd rather do that, but that's not an option for me.

I recommend a larger TV to solve the problem. :D

I used Your Shape: Fitness Evolved for the first time this morning. My brother-in-law gave me a copy of the game, so I didn't have to wait for Goozex to give it to me.

I must say, I was impressed. The body recognition seemed really good compared to Kinect Adventures, but it probably helps that the game doesn't use floaty giant Avatars to play. I mostly checked out the games, unlocking the medium level challenge for each of them before moving on. I look forward to "exergaming" more tomorrow.

Also, as I'm significantly hearing impaired, I was delighted to see that there was a menu option for English subtitles.

Kinect Sports Boxing has grown on me. Was playing yesterday with my kids and that was a hoot. Also I played online. I lost my first bout, but then won the second one barely, which was totally thrilling. :) You do have to be aware of how it expects you to punch and block, but once you get that down it's fun. I suck at playing games online, so any time I find one I can do OK at, it's a win. My 9 year old kicks my ass, though. :)

I'm going to have to try the soccer online next. Volleyball I get crushed at online. Actually it seems like whoever gets the first serve wins that game. The serve is too critical. Ace. Ace. Ace. Ace. I need to practice it more, though. I'm guessing the table tennis is similar, but I haven't tried it online - I'm a scared.

My copy of Your Shape should be arriving sometime soon. I'm looking forward to trying that out. I presume I'll be able to play that in the evenings. I can't play Dance Masters in the evenings since I have to have the volume up for the music/beat (kids are going to sleep). Your Shape will hopefully fit the bill for actually getting me in half-decent shape.
