Caffeinefree

CAGiversary!
EDIT - If you see any deals in your local Kmart post it in this thread. Spread the love. This post is no longer being curated so check the last post for YMMV local deals.

20% OFF SALE ON NOW UNTIL THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE. (*Gwarr... Brains...*)

NOTICE

I am no longer affiliated with Kmart, so this isn't getting any future updates. Stay tuned to the latest post in the comment section. THANKS!

I looked into the plan for this fire-sale, and apparently they'll be rolling out clearance deals for the whole section. So 20% off, then 50%, or whatever comes to pass. Looks like different regions are getting different sales sooner than others, as well as higher volume stores getting different sales than lower ones. IF YOU HAVE INSIDE INFO, POST IN THIS THREAD SO CAGS IN YOUR AREA CAN GET A HEADS UP.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • All deals are YMMV.
  • Kmart bases it's clearance on how long an item has been in stock. It takes a few weeks, but even the most expensive items go on clearance.
  • ALWAYS ASK SOMEONE TO SCAN AN ITEM FOR YOU. Most older games are on clearance, but have not been labeled as such.
  • Lookout for "penny items", items that have been on shelf for so long they've been clearanced down to 0.01. They won't sell for that, but it's a great way to get GTA IV for $2.00, for example.
  • TAKE A PICTURE AND PRICE MATCH.  For Walmart and other retailers, this is all they need to price match. Make sure the label is clearly visible and don't forget to post it here and share the love.

Background Info
So I am an employee of Kmart and happened to see this memo pass through my local store. I can't repeat it verbatim, and I couldn't get a picture of the message due to being constantly on camera.

Basically the memo stated the "exit strategy" for the games section in retail stores. Stating that this was in essence brought on by having overstocked shelves (bwa hahaha) and not enough customers. However Kmart.com, Sears.com, and Shopyourwayrewards.com, would continue to sell games and consoles to meet peoples needs. So they're switching focus from retail to online.

The message continued to explain to sell down merch and fill the empty space with other merch. Eventually to clearance out the whole section if it didn't sell down.

So firstly, wait. Just wait and deals will come.

As a customer I have to say that Kmart has had nothing but crappy deals for the past few years. (On games) Focusing on SYWR points and mediocre sales to bring in customers rather than staying competitive with Amazon, Walmart, and pretty much any retailer that will actually give a deep discount. Therefore they have shot themselves in the foot and driven away most business. As a result of that they face what I call "the burger problem".

When Kmart doesn't get games in to sell, they can't sell them. But instead of getting more stock I guess they just say "X person doesn't want Y game". This is just like a survey of a small town saying no one in the town likes burgers, because no one eats burgers. Only to find out there is nowhere to eat burgers in the first place.

Why doesn't Kmart get games to sell? I don't know if Kmart as a whole does this, or just my store, but we don't get games on a truck. We get them in sporadically via UPS, and never before release date. We get limited quantities and then get restocks oddly. Over the holidays I got dozens of calls for titles we wouldn't get in for weeks. During Christmas we only got a handful of Xbox Ones and no PS4s, and since then only one Wii U and one 3DS XL, which may have been returns. In short they could be making money, but there is just some really bad policies in place that leave plenty of customers walking out the door.

Then on top of that we barely make any money in markup. We buy games basically at cost, given only a few dollars. I've seen games we bought for 58.50 selling for $60. Same for all peripherals, a 20 charger may have costed 12 for us. I was really shocked about this when I first started looking into it. Whereas other sections of the store have a markup that's understandable.

So now after all this poor management, they're getting rid of what has always been the best part of the electronics section - games. I remember there being something said about "better serving our customer's needs", the problem in the first place was that they didn't serve our needs. For the most part they were poorly stocked, AND THIS HAS KILLED THEM THE MOST.

Just scanned every 3ds game in the store and they're all $1 off and then an additional 20% off. Checked a couple PS3/4 games and the results are varying.

Donkey Kong Returns and Mario Kart Golf for $23 are the only okay deals I've found, mostly because everything is shovelware.

My favorite KmartGamer memories were the gaming coupons they'd give you for buying certain games. But even if you returned those games, the coupons were still valid. You could combine the coupons if they had different codes/denominations. Hypothetically, you could buy games and consoles, return them, keep the gaming coupons, and get consoles and games you wanted for free (e.g. a Mario 25 special edition red Wii, a Mario 25 special edition red/black DSi XL, a God of War edition PSP, and a complete set of 4 PS Move controllers). If they were running a deal on a console you were buying, even if you bought it with all coupons, you'd score a gaming coupon for that purchase, essentially getting paid to take the console off their hands on Thanksgiving.

I'm not sure why they're getting rid of the games section.

Today I went there and picked up a 500 GB PS3 Destiny Bundle for $162. I had a picture but it says I can't post links until I've made three posts.

Found a copy of Kid Icarus Uprising for $3.42 after tax. The games section was pretty bare by the time I got there so I'm glad I found at least 1 good deal.

Damn I'm jealous. No kmarts around me unfortunately. Why is it that KI:U is so hard to find but there are random copies thrown in clearance bins in the most unusual places.

fuck wait, you show your 'loophole' where you basically ruined future deals for others and then you complain about not knowing why they are getting rid of the games section… rightttt

Decent selection of games as of yesterday at the Kmart on PA-51 near Beaver Falls. (not sure what town it's actually in)

They still had a couple 4GB Kinect bundles and a couple other systems too. (I forget what the others were, no PS4s tho)

500 GB Destiny PS3 for $162? Was that a fluke or is that the new clearance price?

my gaming memories of kmart was playing the Gamecube kiosk back in 2002-2003 and buying some games there. i live in a small town that mainly before 2012 (when we finally got a gamestop) you could only get games at kmart or walmart without resorting to the internet

Nicely done! I felt privileged just to get a copy of Kid Icarus from K-Mart for $20 last year. (Then again, I got Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for $3, so it all evens out.)

I remember getting a pretty good deal on Peace Walker when it came out.

Ok that's my Kmart game shopping story, bye.
I remember buying the Peace Walker PSP bundle at Kmart the day it launched, and I'm almost certain that was my last purchase of any kind at Kmart.

I will miss them, though, as stepping into one is like stepping back in time.

Neither of the KMarts within 25 miles of me have ps4 systems.  Ah well, I remember getting many a cheap 360 game there.

I'm constantly reminded of the end cap at the toys r us (that's no longer in Tampa) having a bunch of gamecubes for $100. I regret not being old enough to have money to buy them all, or at least one

For years, I have visited the local K-Mart on average of once a week.  It was a short walk from the local grocery store, and so after I finished buying food I would take a moment to browse the video game section.  Typically I would flip through the clearanced video games then look at the games behind the glass case and smirk at the prices.  Every once in a while, I would actually buy something.  As the video games section waxed and waned, I continued my weekly visits; more out of a sense of morbid curiosity than anything else.  To give an analogy, imagine an amateur botanist regularly touring the worst kept garden in the neighborhood.  Now that the video games section is to disappear though, I find myself oddly sad.  Sure it was terrible, but it was a comforting sort of terrible.  If anything so benighted as that video games section could persist for so long, than surely it was possible for even the lowliest of us to succeed or at least survive.

Still, there were a few gems hidden in the rough.

Final Fantasy 6 for Game boy advance which rang up for 1/3 the going price.

Final Fantasy X 2 for PS2, which I bought as a gift for someone else at the price of ... $2.

Baten Kaitos Origins, which lingered in the clearance boxes for years before I snapped it up for $4.

Blue Dragon, Nier, Ninja Gaiden 2, and others picked up at sale.

That one time they put their entire stock of Sony Playstation 3 wireless headsets up for sale at $10 a piece.

And finally today, when I picked up what will likely be my last game purchase from K-Mart.  A copy of Lumines for the PS Vita which I had watch leave the glass case for the cleance section, then return to the glass case; lather rinse and repeat.  The box bore multiple clearance stickers, with the final price of $12.  The shelf, with a shiny new sticker, printed up for the only remaining vita game left in the store, listed it as $5.99.  And then it rang up for $4.70 or so.  Pure K-Mart, even to the end.

I haven't found games at my local (now closed) kmart for years. Last decent thing I found was Haunting Ground for 14.99. I bought the 3 they had on a whim. I guess that was a good decision.

I read in a Morgan Freeman voice in my head.

I wish I could tell you that Kmart fought the good fight, and time let him be. I wish I could...

Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'.

Saw a PS4 and an AssCreed XBO bundle both for 5% off today.  That store had all the games/accessories marked $1-3 off too.  Very strange.

25% off all games at K-Mart in Columbia, SC.

Picked up:

:3ds: Boulder Dash XL 3D for $11.99

:wiiu: ZombiU for $4.80

Not the best deals but I had free ShopYourWay points so nothing out of pocket.

My local kmart has nothing of value, got some crappy-ish thumbpad stick things for a few bucks...is it possible that other random kmarts or sears *will* have good deals on ps4 or even ps3 games? I saw assasins creed BF for $60, it was shocking heh...

Saw a pink wiimote plus for $27 with discounts.  Other than that a handful of stuff that was still ringing up MSRP.  Might try again when the clearance discount gets bigger or when a discount is applied to all merchandise.

The half off thing last fall was the last time there were actually a LOT of games at my Kmart.  I managed to snag Bravely Default for $20 when that was going on, but I think that sale cleared out most of the good Nintendo games.  There was a copy of Wind Waker HD hiding behind the giant ESRB sticker, so I half expect that to be the bombshell holdout.

This morning Kmart added official signage, so I think this is nationwide, that all video games were an additional 15% off the sticker price. Yes, this applies to clearance items.

That's great! I'll have to stop by some of the local ones, it's worth a shot to see if I can find some good stuff.

I know someone mention this but my brother and I went to the Kmart at Cranston, RI and wow... Nothing much was left that I want.

No, we wasn't follow around or outside by Kmart "security". :p

Kmart in harrisburg Pa only has a few games. Best deal I saw was Diablo 3 for PS3 for $5. I'd rather have the PS4 version though

I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite post on CAG.

Well done.

I went to my local K-Mart today and found some "awesome" clearance deals:

All XBox 1 and PS4 games $1 off MSRP

Same with Wii U games

and Smash Bros. for the 3DS for $42 which I checked on incredulously as they still had the sticker for it at MSRP under it. Thats what it was in the system for...

Stopped by my local one which ended up being 20% off games and accessories: Got Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception for $15.20 (tax not included) and a set of Nintendo 3ds styluses etc, for $7 or so.

Also checked the price on God of War collection for the Vita and it ran around $23-$24 (without tax). So if you see it it might be worth picking it up.

Lol. The Kmart I work at still has a VHS of the Matrix: Reloaded somewhere in the dvd section.

The Kmart by me had a decent selection of DS and 3ds games but 90% were just below retail. Couple random games had "clearance" stickers which did hold true with the additional 20% off. But all the good stuff rang up full price. Kmart is weak sauce. Though I felt the need to pick up two crappy games for dirt. deal or no deal for DS and a Words Search game for about 3 bucks total.

Checked my store in Michigan while paying a bill. About 25% off most games. A few more recent games, mostly DS and Wii shovelware though. 20% off of clearance, which wasn't much.

Best deals:

Wind Waker HD - $36

Lego City - $25

Tomadachi Life - $27

Wii Remote Plus - $30

Other consoles were too picked over. I'll probably keep checking and grab the Wii U games if they get to like 50% before being bought. We have another store across town that I'll have to check too.

Grabbed Modnation Racers vita today for $1.60 after the 20% off (was marked $1.99).  Also saw Tearaway marked at $7.99.

Was Lego City on Wii U or 3DS?
