Kobe scores 81 Points

yeah im pretty sure the reason he retired and went to baseball (the dark days) was because his dad died. plus michael did everything he did with centers like Luc Longley and Bill Wentington. He not only was a great scorer, he was great at defense, spreading the ball around, LEADING his team, hustling, and even rebounding when no one else would crash the boards. the man did it all, i.e. the greatest basketball player of all time. that being said finally we get some worthy discussion with guys like magic, russel, etc. kobe doesnt belong in the same discussion with such greats.

There is no doubt that jordan is the greatest player of all time, but he was the only dominent player on his team. Kobe had to live with shaq his first 8 season in the league. Jordan was the man straight out of college, while kobe came off the bench. Lets wait a few more years to see how kobe will perform without shaq then we can probably make some comparisons.

True, but you can't completely overlook Scottie Pippen's existance, he was nearly the MVP of the league during Jordan's "break"

thats true as well. thats why its so hard to compare players. There is never 2 identical situations. To compare kobe to jordan with averages is not fair to kobe, because kobe didn't even get a chance to start until his 3rd or 4th season in the league. anyways Lamar Odom and Shawn Marion for MVP.

First, to answer the Kobe haters:
Kobe the ballhog. The majority of his seasons he has averaged between 5 and 6 assists per game. Jordan only once average 8 assists per game and other than that season never averaged more then 6.3 per game. In fact, Kobe is currently only 1 assist per game behind Jordan (4.4 to 5.3) with Kobe playing only 15 minutes a game as a rookie and 26 minutes a game his second season. Jordan only had one season that he averaged less than 35 minutes a game, and that was a season he only played 18 games in. Last year, Kobe averaged 6 assists a game. This year his assists are a bit down, but the issue comes from the fact that when he passes the ball, his teammates miss their shots. He understands the triangle offense completely, his teammates don't. Next to Kobe, Luke Walton understands the triangle offense the best on the team. Let me repeat that, LUKE WALTON. The Lakers would have won half as many games this year had Kobe not taken over. He is doing whatever it takes for his team to win, just as someone has said about Jordan. Right now, the Lakers absolutely need him to score a lot because no one else will. That's what he's doing.
Kobe the defender. Kobe is a shade behind Jordan in terms of averages, but not as drastically as some make it out. In steals per game, Kobe is down 1.45 to 2.35. In blocks per game, .60 to .83. As for rebounds, 5.1 to 6.2. These are very comparable numbers. Plus, like Jordan, Kobe routinely asks to defend the opposing team's best perimiter player.
Kobe the rapist. Get over it. He got caught doing what 90% of the players in the league do: fooling around with women. It just so happened that the girl was mentally unstable. She had a history of mental issues, and at the time had recently expressed suicidal thoughts. And you're going to tell me that a 19 year old girl is going to a professional athelete's room with completely innocent thoughts? Let's not forget that at least 1 other semen sample was found on her underwear. I'm not condoning what Kobe did, but the girl was messed up and used Kobe as a way to get a stash of money. End of story.

Now, a note about Magic Johnson, the greatest player of all time:
As a 20 year old rookie in the NBA Finals, Magic started game six at center in place of the injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and went on to record 42 pts, 15 rebounds, 7 assist and 3 steals, becoming the first rookie to win NBA Finals MVP. You want clutch? See the hook shot against the Celtics to win game 4 of the NBA Finals. You want defense? League leader in steals in 81 and 82 (record for most consecutive seasons leading the league in steals), and is 9th on the all time steals list. Toss in 7 rebounds, 11 assists and 19 points a game, along with 5 championships, and you've got the greatest player of all time.
 
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Larry Bird, but that's probably because he's one of the most gawky looking motherfuckers to ever set foot on the hardwood. You guys are too harsh on each other on who the best player of all time is. Comparing stats is nothing it's all about the postseason. If you really wanted to compare them they would have to play at the same time against each other. By the way Jordan could come back right now and still lead many teams in the playoffs, when he's around 45.

Bird was great and Magic was great. No doubt about that. If you look at championships, clutch ability, ability to dominate a game on both ends of the floor (not just the offensive end), Jordan surpasses them IMO. The sad thing as that all three had issues that cut into their careers and they could have been held in even higher regard.

Bird and Magic are no slouches though. I grew up watching them and before Jordan got those six rings I would have said either of them were the all-time best.

This is why I rate Magic as the 3rd best player behind MJ and Russell:

I'd bet my life that if someone made a poll and put Jordan, Magic, Kobe, Wilt, Russell, Bird and whoever else on it and asked who was the best, Jordan would win.
