Good God was Smackdown incredible tonight. Benoit and Kennedy had their best meeting yet, and it's impossible for Regal and Taylor to have a bad match with Londrick. I was impressed with how good Vito-MVP ended up being, and while much of that was due to the focus on MVP's burnt back, it's also due to MVP acting like a main eventer. He's come a long with in just a few shorts months in WWE, and considering that he took about a month off to sell the back, it's even more impressive. JBL rattled off mentions of Windham, the Bossman slam, Stu Hart, AND Bret Hart tonight, and despite a few being off (Bob Orton Jr. popularized the superplex, not Windham, and Stu never did the sharpshooter, and Tatanka's move is more of a Rock bottom than a Bossman slam, he was still awesome).
The usual assortment of quotes from the show -
"Joey Mercury with a face mask, POSSIBLY FOR PROTECTION!"
"He's not a registered redneck. You need to register to be a redneck? No, but I think he might need to register to be a citizen of this country."
"This is like Brisco vs Strongbow... Brisco was an Indian, so your analogy is all screwed up. Brisco's from Oklahoma, you don't know what he is. Fine, it's like Murdoch vs. Strongbow, over a bottle of moonshine.".
"Are you saying that everyone from Georgia is a redneck? Martin Luther King Jr. was from Georgia, and he wasn't a redneck, he was a great civil rights leader. Ron Simmons was from Georgia, and he wasn't a redneck. Ron Simmons is a good friend of mine. No he's not!".
"I deserve a better partner, but I don't get it, and I don't complain. YOU DESERVE A CYANIDE TABLET IS WHAT YOU DESERVE! If you want that short sidekick back, you can have him.".
"If Vito wins, I'm done. I'm hanging up my boots!".
"If Vito had won, Lou Thesz, Arnold Skaaland, and Jack Brisco would've all committed hari kari.".
[Miz comes out to face 'Taker] "I LOVE IT. Take that you Red Rooster-lookin' reality show reject. BEAT HIM UNDERTAKER, BEAT HIM! Gimmie an 'ooh rah', gimmie an ooh rah now!".
Y'know, I agree on all counts here. I'm going to have to start watching SmackDown more often. It's such a solid wrestling show on all counts - if you want your sports entertainment, you have Vito, UT, and Batista, if you want *wrestling* you have Regal/Taylor vs Kendrick/London (I hope that feuds goes to Summerslam, every damn match they have is a treat), if you want women, they're out there, but not always the centerpiece of the show (nor are they treated with that "puppies" kind of disdain). Then you have enjoyable characters who are also fun wrestlers to watch (Booker, Kennedy).
(I'm really hoping the Untouchables debut soon, and that they keep their gimmick largely intact). Did you all see some commercial transition segments with a blonde woman named Maryse promoting SmackDown? She's an OVW talent, but wouldn't surprise me one bit if she made the jump to SD immediately (and not for her wrestling ability, shall we say).
I'll dare say that SmackDown is close to my favorite wrestling show of the week (just above Impact, and just below OVW).
So, to rank all the wrestling shows I watch per week in preference:
1: OVW
2: SmackDown
3: Impact
4: ECW
5: Raw
6: HWA
The problem with HWA is the "sports entertainment" format, because they're using "not ready for public access" quality performers. It's like you're watching wrestlers train in your home, and none of them are very good, or look very good. Les Thatcher is a great guy and a helluva trainer. He's using no discretion whatsoever in who he puts on TV and what sorts of storylines he does.
OTOH, it occurs that I complain about wrestling more than I ought to. I am really enjoying OVW, SD, and TNA right now - that's 4 solid hours of wrestling on TV, so I have nothing to bitch about. Of course, many of us think of "Raw" as the top show, so if that show sucks, then it may have a trickle down effect.
Lastly, I notice there are two JBLs. If there's not a ethnic/racial stereotype in the ring, he's a great announcer with a immense backlog of wrestling history in his mind (and the fact that he makes up half the shit he says gives him a distinct Heenan quality). OTOH, I *cannot* listen to him at times, and that's usually when a minority charicature is in the ring. He's a very good color man, and isn't trying to be the "cool guy" (and deserves massive credit for that).
