Kung Fu Hustle at Walmart for 14.87

CAGiversary!
Best deal on Kung Fu Hustle I've spotted so far. But the hook is that (may be YMMV) there's a double pack with a documentary called The Art of Action for the same price. That makes it more than worth it to pick it up I believe ^_^

It's great. Violence AND humor. Oh, and really well used special effects. They were done on a budget, but still look pretty damn good.

Here's the situation with WalMarts and "double packs," as told to be by a friend who works at WalMart.

All WalMarts will have a double pack (DVD packaged with another DVD or another bonus item like a book). The pricing will be YMMV:

Some WalMarts will have:
DVD $14.xx
Double Pack $14.xx

Other WalMarts will have:
DVD $14.xx
Double Pack $19.xx

I'll be picking up the double pack tomorrow if my Wal Mart has it for $15...otherwise I'll be perfectly happy with the movie by itself. :)

Me and my wife watched this tonight we thought it was very good. I love classic kung fu movies, and this one had a "old school" story with modern CGI involved. I also liked shaolin soccer.
shaolin soccer was at overstock used for 2.99 last week - not sure if there anymore. Ordered myself a copy.
I grabbed one as well. Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow.

I am going to check the for the Kung Fu Hustle double pack tomorrow when I go to work. If it is $14xx I'll pick it up.

Walmart here in North Las Vegas only bundled the extra dvd with the Full screen version of Kung Fu Hustle and it was 16.87 or something.

Kung Fu Hustle is a great movie. I rented it yesterday and watched it. I'm gonna buy it Friday. I might see if my Walmart has this double pack for cheap. If not I'll get it at Circuit City for $14.99.

Has anyone seen the uncut version of the movie? From the reviews I've read (where the reviewer is aware that the U.S. version is cut), the movie is much better uncut. I think that the U.S. version removes all blood, and does something involving a romantic subplot or something.

Also, is anyone going to pick up Ong Bak later this month? This is one movie where I probably will buy the cut U.S. version. This is the only NTSC DVD of this movie with English subtitles and Thai audio. Plus, the acting and story in this movie weren't that great, and no cuts were made to the action scenes, I believe.

I'm not sure if I'll buy it, but I'm definitely renting it. I've been wanting to see it. I'd rather save my money for Oldboy.

Whoa wait! There's an uncut version of this movie? The Hong Kong release is about 99 minutes in running time. And I don't know of any other uncut Hong Kong editions out there. Jeez I hate what the American movie industy has been doing. They always release some cut edition of a movie onto dvd, then a few months later release the "unrated/uncut" version. Damn it! Just release that in the first place!!

you may be shocked to know that movies aren't always better when they run longer... if the pacing drags on way too long or there are cultural misunderstandings or under (or non) appreciation for a type of cinema then it can just make the movie worse for a particular audience... shaolin soccer is another example of this...

Yeah, the U.S. version is cut. There is no excuse for the cuts, either, since the movie was rated R, and keeping the cut material wouldn't have pushed the movie to an NC-17. Columbia Pictures has been awesome with their foreign & martial arts releases, and I'm disappointed that they dropped the ball on this release. However, at least the movie didn't get into the hands of Harvey Scissorhands... er, Weinstein and Miramax, like several other movies.

If you want to know what is cut, visit the following link. WARNING: SPOILERS

I agree that movies aren't always better when they run longer. I know of several movies that could benefit from some better editing. As for cultural misunderstandings/differences, I think that if you want to enjoy and truly appreciate a foreign film, you should at least have some knowledge of that country/culture. Also, as you watch more movies from those countries/cultures, you will be able to understand things more and pick up on more jokes, gags, and language. I have seen so many Hong Kong movies that I recognize several Cantonese phrases and cultural references now.

Shaolin Soccer is an absolute mess in the U.S. version. If you compare it to the theatrical version, it's missing around 15 minutes. If you compare it to the director's cut, it's missing nearly 30 minutes! The scenes that were cut were scenes that helped flesh out the characters and plot. It seems like Miramax just wanted a movie with only the outlandish soccer scenes and such. Just look at the terrible advertising campaign: "Kick some grass! It's Crouching Tiger meets The Matrix, with some Bend it Like Beckham thrown in..." Yuck! And don't even get me started on the shitty dubbing and music changes.

The only film that might benefit from trimming is the U.S. release of Ong Bak. The acting and story aren't that great, and basically the only reason anyone likes this movie is for the action choreography, stunts, and fights. At least the U.S. version will have a Thai audio track and English subtitles, with a crappy dub available for those who want it.

I went to Wal-Mart today and they're selling it for $15.99 with no bonus DVD. So I just went and got it at CC instead. Oh well worth a shot, thanks anyways OP.

I'm going to pick it up today. I would just go to CC and get it, but it's not worth the gas to drive all the way to the nearest one to my house. In the long run, considering WM is right by my house, this will be cheaper even if it's $17.

Thanks for the deal!

I'll check out Walmart as soon as possible. I really want to buy this movie. I watched Kung Fu Hustle twice (on the same day lol) and loved it. I need to buy it!!!

Yeah, when I watched Shaolin Soccer in the original version on my dvd, it showed that golden leg was a dickhead to begin with and thats part of the reason why (I dont remember his name, Hong?) had his leg broken. In the US version they completely cut that out.

I picked it up for $17 at Wal-Mart. I watched it in the English dubbed version, just for kicks, and they butchered it horribly. Oh well, I like subtitles WAY better anyway, it keeps the overall feel of the movie in tact.

I bought it for $20. Not complaining though, since it comes with the free DVD bonus.

Buy The Medallion for $5.50 at Walmart, send in $2.99 and get Who Am I?, a very good Jackie Chan movie. I had Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, so I just used that instead of buying The Medallion, but it works either way.

I thought it was an incredible movie. It's constantly throwing everything at you. Very funny & violent. It's $19.XX at my Wal-Mart, though.
