I am looking for a laptop cooler for my Gateway M series laptop I got back in 2008 (that one that Best Buy had on sale and then dropped the price several times).

Story for those that care or bored:
I used it maybe every few months but have been using it as my main computer since last summer.

There have been several occasions (this Nov-Jan) where the laptop would shut off and when I try to start it back up, it would freeze before the point where the user different accounts would load; this would NOT happen in normal safe mode but did in other safe modes (with networking/command). Even after leaving it alone for 12 hours it would do this. Occasionally I got lucky and it would "work". I then left it in the basement for a few hours which seemed to do the trick each time since.

I haven't been having this issue for a while *crosses fingers* but the cpu is always high still and the keyboard is always warm.

There are so many brands and costs range. I never used or even seen a cooler in person and don;'t even know someone who has one.

Any advice and suggestions?

I have an M series laptop too and it does get warm

I use mine almost exclusively on my desk. I use a stand that holds the laptop at an angle to raise up the display and provide a usb hub for kb and mouse. Some of these have fans too, but mine doesn't. I used various small desk fans to blow air across the bottom of the case. Finally found a great small (4" or.so diam) at Big Lots that works perfectly and doesn't take up too much desk space.

Even if you don't use a stand, aiming a desk fan across the kb would probably solve any heat issues.

If you use it mostly on your lap, I just wasted 5 minutes.

I have a towel under it and put it on the bed. Sometimes I have the laptop shifted over so the fan area (where the heat is) is not covered by the towel.

A fan probably won't help much since I'd also like the laptop to not be as warm. Looking to spend under $20.

This is probably the WORST place for a running laptop WRT heat. The laptop is sitting on a huge insulator which doesn't allow the heat to dissipate. Your bed is made to keep you warm and comfy. Good for you...bad for your laptop.

In your situation, I'd look for something like (probably exactly like...) this:

http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Chill-...9C/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1335019986&sr=8-19

It's got fans and it maintains an area under the laptop for air circulation, which is exactly what you want.

I bought my dad a Targus Chill Pad for Christmas a few years ago. Pretty sure it was around $20-ish at Wal-Mart. He said it helped a good bit as that laptop heated up a good bit and he was using the laptop at the kitchen table a lot. Now he uses a diff laptop in the dining room by the air conditioner and my mom uses his old one in the kitchen pantry desk and it's still gotten pretty arm at times (then again, the air circulation there has to stink in general as i's basically sitting in an entertainment center) but it hasn't shut off (which it did once or twice years ago.)
