LEGO Deals 3

Maybe I am late to the party, but the price of that gas station is insane. There are sets at nearly half the cost with more pieces. Why is that set so expensive?
Edit: Missed the last page here, but yeah, I picked up that Gas N Wash Express set from '92 5 years ago on eBay for ~$25. Seems a lot better than the new one.

I have the remake of 6397-1: Gas N' Wash Express from many years back. It's lovely. The new one is super expensive because LEGO feels like it. I mean there is no good reason. It's actually a two designs in one set, but still outrageous. The real reason we don't have baseplates, baseplates mean what you design needs to fit in a scale. LEGO doesn't design for scale anymore, they will design a huge snowplow that would never ft on the road and a SUV that is about the same size.

No the Pirate sets from the series before the last one.

(I'm looking it up.)

Pirates 2009...

http://brickset.com/sets/6241-1/Loot-Island

Looking back 2009 and 2015 are almost exactly the same, but now I really wish I bought the theme last Christmas when they were 30% off.
I still have a sealed box of Loot Island. Anyone want to trade for a newer set. Used Ghost maybe? [emoji3]

I loved my airport set when I got back in the 80s. The baseplates added so much to the playability of the set. They definitely don't make them like this anymore.

Yep, I have that set. Came with those 4 baseplates - I distinctly remember (3 for the runway including that "T" plate plus the helicopter landing pad).

I also have that old school Shell station from the 80s...but neither of the followup Octan carwashes.

Thank you n64ra, the 80's one is the one I have.  I knew a bunch of those pieces from the 1990 version looked unfamiliar.

Thanks for posting this. I wonder how it'll be packaged. The box looks too small to do the individual pockets for each day.
It's not an advent calendar. My guess is it will all come in that smallest box, just like shown. Each 'day' will have the date and what pieces you need. So say Day 1 is a plane, you build it. Day 2 is a train, you take apart day 1 and build the train. Day 3 you take the train apart and build the next thing. There will be 24 mini holiday models from the 250 pieces, but not 24 mini models like an advent calendar would have.

Think of it as a holiday Creator box.

Ah. Okay. Much less interested now

Even Brickiest seems confused, however Huw doesn't seem to be the most logical guy.

The set only has 250 pieces, the models shown all have many more than 10 pieces. It comes with a brick separator, however I think every set does now--a-days, but it even says 'build and rebuild' and I don't think they mean every year.

I wish it came in the little red box that is shown on the box, that would be great.

Still not bad considering it's free AND double points month / weeks.

Yeah it's definitely not 24 different models. The build and rebuild phrase is how I got that.

The Disney castle is out of stock. I wonder if they will even have it available for double points.

That's what I'm saying! I liked Brickset when it was just reviews and set news, no commentary. Because now they try to act like a real LEGO news blog and just fail at it. They actually deleted my comment and rephrased it, but it's still incorrect.

We shall see next month but I doubt you can build more than 8-10 of the same models at the same time. Still a great idea for a free set!

And and thebrickfan.com has a picture of TRU Bricktober. Thankfully those minifigure sets are free with a $50 purchase. I suspect they will sell out real quick, or that TRU will lose them in the back. (They did that with a TMNT free poly that I just happened to find when i was cleaning.)

Target has the Sandcrawler for $270.
Shit Batcave for $242
Shit Hoth crapy crap crap for $225

Other Star Wars is like 10% off and Nexo is 20%

The Target in Tyler TX had the Resistance X Wing tagged on the shelf at 39.99 but rang up at 71.99. After showing the tag they adjusted. I noticed the DPCI was for the new Doc Oc set but the name and Lego item # matched.

Might be worth checking the Doc Oc tag in your stores to see if it's widespread.

I went to K-Mart yesterday and their clearance became like Walmart. "Look these sets are on clearance!" and really  aren't. I do regret not buying a Snake Worshipper's Tank for $11.xx.

They also had the Creator burger corner for $30 and the newest log cabin for $18.74, which I almost bought because I had a $5 off $50 coupon.

The Kmart near me had the lego move secret police dropship on clearance for $60. I was tempted but didn't bite. It looks like a cool build.

Well clearance at the K-Mart I went to was 30% off, but only one thing in the second even rang up on clearance. So for $42 it might be worth a second bite.

Was just thinking about base plates today. When I was a kid, a big set meant getting a base plate or two. Now I hardly ever see them. Some sets that should have them just have smaller pieces connected together by a common structure. I wonder if there's a manufacturing/packaging efficiency that they gain by not having the large plates.
Yeah. It costs them less, and people are seemingly willing to buy them on their own. They're in the catalog.

The gas station and airport are bad, but I'm gobsmacked by the volcano sets. The picture in the catalog has the volcanos on imaginary raised areas. If you go to shop.lego.com, you can see that you get...nothing to make the volcano cone look like a mountain. It just sits on the ground. That is the saddest excuse for a volcano I have seen outside a science fair.

In the past, this would have come with a raised, curved baseplate to give it some height.

Oh, and this is an 824 piece $120 set.

Has nothing to do with packaging, since boxes are still as ridiculously big as ever. It's because they think they can charge it, and parents will buy it anyway.

I am rapidly approaching being done with Lego. It's one thing to be an expensive hobby. It's another to be an expensive, anti-competitive, anti-consumer hobby that, when it is doing better than ever, screws it to customers even more.

Oh, and this is an 824 piece $120 set.

Space Shuttle, less than 600 pieces and $120.

What gets me is there is the other volcano set that is $150! You can get Pet Shop with 1,000 more pieces for the same price. But if you have two volcano sets that include volcanos, why no raised baseplate?

And what's worse is if you look at the display in Target, the vehicles are tiny. $50 for a small helicopter and $40 for a drill? Even half off tat's pretty ridiculous.

Got a KO Suicide Squad Joker from eBay and gotta say I am impressed with him. His face is reversible (didn't take another pic of the other side) and he has two sets of hands - purple (gloves) and white. He is pretty solid as far as the quality compared to Lego. Unlike the other KO's I have bought (Shazam and Phoenix) you can fully take him apart. He was only $2.25 shipped, totally worth it!

I have two non LEGO related questions.

One is does anyone know of a credit card that doesn't have a foreign transaction fee?

The second.... I recently inherited Playboys from the 60s and 70s.
(Pauses for laughs.)

My grandmother gave me them.
(Longer pause for laughs.)
So how the hell do I sell them and where?

Capital One doesn't charge foreign transaction fees. Highly recommend getting one of their cards for importing stuff and international travel.

As for the Playboys, you should keep them. I hear they have great articles!

EBay? Truly "vintage" playboy has some sort of collector's market, doesn't it?
Yes it does, dome of them are worth big bucks, but eBay is very picky to these things.

I prefer internet porn like a normal guy living in 2016 people. :p Bt the articles are amazing. One showed me how to cook a duck.

So it looks like Wall-e is gone for good and Doctor Who was half off this morning.

The new LEGO.com Shop is up...

To say it's a horrible pile of shit would be an understatement, and a disgrace to a pile of shit.

^Yes being it's 99.99% exactly the same as the last one. And is also in the new catalog.

How'd they do that. It's like they for every design decision they could make, they chose the worst one. They spent money on that.
What gets me is they finally just got the last website the last few months to actually function without having to use a Windows computer or delete cookies every time.

And they give us that?

I understand a small upgrade, pretty up the old website, make it more bright and fun. But the homepage really should show you a few thins, what's new, what's on special value or sales, what's exclusive, top sellers.

The top section that rotates through things is slightly large but fine, but then there is hardly anything else on the whole front page. it's a disaster. and 'Sets" in the top left should really say "Themes". And they got rid of some, like Trains and seasonal section seems to be gone.

Pick a Brick wasn't great before, it's unusable now. I can't even find minifigure legs.

Because your pics looked so great and I have a hard time resisting KO minifigs, I actually went and ordered one of these myself this morning.

Also ended up ordering Harley for $1.91 and Captain Boomerang for $2.25. If they turn out to be pretty nice too, I'll probably grab the whole squad as well as DoFP Quicksilver.

Speaking of Kmart, I recently used them to get some really cheap sets again. I feel like I kind of fell behind the curve for a bit because my job got really busy, but now I'm back for deals. One near me clearanced out quite a few sets, I ended up grabbing Rey's Speeder for $6, Kryptonite Interception for $12, and a mislabeled Spidey + Ghost Rider team up for $3.

That Ghost Rider set is the new crown jewel of my cheap collection. I don't think I've gotten any new sets that cheap before (unless you count when I got all of those Civil War sets for free from that glitch). I also just ended up purchasing the X-Men vs Sentinel set off the site since I had a large influx of Surprise points this morning. It was nearly impossible to not bite at $12.xx shipped.

Speaking of Kmart, has anyone had any luck with using shop your way coupons with clearance? It's listed as an exclusion on my coupon but I know things can slip through sometimes. Thank You

I have a couple of times, but there's no easy way to make sure it'll work. You just have to continually try scanning things in store to see if they work. I've only had it work on stuff that had either just been clearanced or stuff that had been clearanced for a super long time.

I only used the Lego store once a few months ago, but I don't remember it being this bad. I went on there to see what the largest base plate was, so I filtered on baseplates. There was 39 pages of them. I couldn't figure out how to go to the last page to see the largest one. So I clicked through 38 additional pages. Ugh.

I found the T-Rex JW set on clearance for $49 at a local Target tonight. I went ahead and bought one of the two left on the shelf. Decent price, I guess? The Indomitus Rex set shelf tag had a clearance marker on it, too, but there were none left for me to see what that was marked down to-- 30% off, I assume.

Are these very common on clearance these days?

Me: It can't be that bad. Let me try.

Me: Oh.

Maybe try sorting by "Price: High to Low"?
Option doesn't exist.

The high to low option I think is there, it's just tiny and doesn't always work.

That's the only choices you have unless you use Bricks and Pieces, then you can get the smaller one in two shades of grey, brown, tan, blue and even red for $7.50-$9.50.
