i've been watching the spiderman and batman minifigs go on ebay for between 20 and 30 bucks. you can sometimes completely offset the price of a SW set just by selling the minifigs.

if you can pick up an extra set for cheap, you might just part out the figs and keep the bricks for yourself.
Oh, I don't plan to become rich at all. I'd be happy just being able to put some money back in the Lego fund ;).
If you have the time to wait and space to store them, it's an easy thing to do. I don't buy with the plan to resell, although I admit to selling stuff when I realize sets are going for an absurd amount (Castle Siege).

Here are my general buying habits

30% off -- Star Wars if I like the set (I've found that SW easily are the first sets to disappear from clearance)

50% off -- Star Wars whether I like the set or not (I have a consumerism issue) and other Lego if I like the set.

75% off -- That's when I go a little crazy. I don't clean places out like the horror stories from the Lego stores, but I do have an attic full of "Wow, that's so cheap, I gotta buy it" sets. Anyone want any Knights Kingdom or Exo-Force? :D j/k I could never part with them.

The BATMAN stuff makes me nervous. I was lucky enough to buy TWO Arkham Asylums at $18 each back when TRU couldn't sell them fast enough. Grabbed a UCS Batmobile for $21. I never buy sets to re-sell them, I bought those for the cheap castle elements. I sold one Arkham on eBay last year (set+instructions+beat-up, opened box) for over $200. Now I see it's going for a LOT more. And the figs are super high. So I'm sitting on my remaining Batman sets. I'm not even a big Batman fan. But I have a bunch of the sets. If LEGO never teams up with WB and Batman again, those sets and figs will just get more and more expensive. But there's another Batman movie coming (if you remember, the first Batman line came out at the same time as The Dark Knight.) Those figs will bottom out the second new scans appear online. And LEGO still does HP with WB. Nervous!

In 2009 I bought a cheap Speed Racer set (the Grand Prix, big box) just to speculate with. It has gone from $39-ish on eBay last year to around $45-ish today. It's still not even re-selling at its original MSRP. I'm tempted to open it and keep it, just for the cool monkey shirt minifig.

7754 Home One Mon Calamari Star Cruiser is listed in stock at $54 at S@H. I'm too nervous to speculate on it, though. It's probably a sure bet, too...

I have the space to store stuff no problem. My real problem would be selling the stuff. As I said, I see a lot of stuff on eBay get relisted endlessly.

I really think with the crazy popularity of Lego Batman on the secondary market that Lego is certainly keeping that in mind along with the new movie coming out. I know it didn't sell that great the first time around but now I think people have a bit of a fire lit under their ass and know that these lines don't sit around forever. I could see it being a popular line again if they brought it back, now if Lego could be convinced of the same then we'd be in business.

Finally ordered one. I've been holding off, but really wanted the Admiral. Thanks for the (unintentional?) heads-up! ;-)

Nah, it was intentional really. If I can't have em I'd rather other CAGers do :)

Thanks to the heads up from a few pages ago, I found the Toy Story 3 escape from the trash compactor set at Sam's Club today for $29.81! They had a big pile of them too, which led me to wonder if I should've waited to see if they drop in price anymore.
It seemed to be the only lego set in the building; they were with all the Christmas stuff, everything with markdown signs on it. Anyone know how Sam's Club works? Is it likely to get marked down some more?

On a side note, they aren't very firendly to the boxes there...I searched through the pile to find one that wasn't sliced from a box cutter, or in some other way crushed, torn or mangled.

A lot of boxes are smashed in the truck, not the store. The boxes say don't open with razor, but I have no clue how else to open it.

My mom bought the big Atlantis Set for $50 and the TS3 train for $56.

Also in NJ here and I rarely see the big discounts on clearance at Target. The stuff disappears long before it gets down much. I live in Lakehurst but have family in Bayonne, so I roam around a lot all over the state when shopping. Wal-Marts are just sad in NJ. I was up at the Bridgewater Lego store last week and they still had a good amount of the 50% off stuff.

I'm also in the camp that Home One will go up in price because it's Star Wars and it's a cool set that isn't likely to get a new version anytime soon. Then again with the SW Lego stuff that DOES get constant reissues like the Falcon still go up....

I'm sure much of the Harry Potter stuff will be significantly inflated eventually. I'm not so sure about the Toy Story stuff because it doesn't fit in with other Lego so easily.

The crazy prices of older stuff really tempt me to sell a lot of it I have laying around to fund my current collection. I have a Star Destroyer, and old sets of the Millenium Falcon, and some other SW stuff I don't need to hang onto. I focus now on the fantasy and city stuff. I had an Arkham Asylum picked up at TRU on clearance years ago and when I saw what it was going for on eBay sold it for almost $400. A Lego Batman would be cool to be patrolling my city...but at that price I bought a hell of a lot of stuff at the B2G1 sale at TRU.

Hey guys, any interest in Lego sets from 92'-99'? I'm in the process of rebuilding them with the intention to eventually sell them individually. I think I've got around 30+, PM me or post here if you want more info, thanks.

amazon has the lego SW visual dictionary for 13 bucks. they are coming out with a new SW book with a new collectible minifig .. maybe han in his ceremony duds? ;)

Pig Farmer & Tractor is back up for backorder on S@H; Venator Cruiser is listed too, but as "call to check availability." Wouldn't mind grabbing that for $60.

Just got back from Kmart. They had unmarked sales on a bunch of lego stuff. I bought the last ARC-170 they had for $36, Woody's Roundup for $29.60, Escape from the Trash Compactor for $29.60, and a Tow Truck for $10 and change. They also had PoP Ostrich Race for $9.99 (50% off, I saw 2 sets), but I had already spent too much and out of respect for the wife who was giving me the "eye" I passed on it and told the girl at the register I didn't want it. Honestly, it wasn't a very cool set anyway. They were advertising 20% off clearance prices, but wouldn't count the lego sets as clearance, oh well :).

They had some TIE Defender for $39.99 ($10 off), Toy Story Train for $63 (not a good sale price), and some Atlantis stuff, as well. One of the Atlantis sets was really cool, but again, I was already spending money I hadn't exactly planned to spend so I put it back. I gave the price scanner a workout for sure! I almost didn't get the ARC-170, but I'm glad I did. The price was 40% off MSRP.

Here's a list of the sets I have. For the moment please consider these as back-ordered, as I plan to build them based on which gather interest. Once built those who are interested will receive pics and as much info as needed.

The pieces have been kept together in large sealed plastic containers for the past 12 - 15 years. Please note that these sets are used and at one time were played with often. Many include instruction books, however most books are in poor condition (Pics will be included when requested). No boxes. Some sets will likely not be 100% complete, in that case you will know exactly whats missing. From a smoke-free home.

Please feel free to PM me any questions you have.

I have used Peeron.com and oldlego.com as references.

Are there any current sales on the bulk sets with misc. pieces in them ? We are doing a Lego B'day for my son and thought it would be neat to do a table of legos and let the kids keep whatever they build.

Becker

Thanks for the list. Aquazone Discovery Station I have always wanted.

Free, bulk rarely goes on sale. There is a set on sale now from Lego.com. It contains 5 mini planes and 5 cars. I think it's $10 plus shipping.
Pig Farmer & Tractor is back up for backorder on S@H
I finally ordered that, I think it's the only Farm set I really need. I have been waiting years for a farm theme and it was rather lacking. Along with the turkey (for my grandpa), a small SP and Atlantis set.

I forgot to say a Target I went to had the SP $100 set for $70. There were about 10-12 of them (and more in the back), in the LEGO isle and no signs. I just noticed that many sets was a little off and scanned it. I need to know when they are planning on lowering it to $50. I so would love a huge space ship.
venator was also on S@H briefly; says call for availability now.

edited to add: dang, pirate beat me to it. ;)
And now it says sold out. Rats.

I've been to a couple Kmarts and each one has been different. One had the Toy Story sets as "price drops" so they didn't get the extra 20% off. Another store had some Toy Story sets as clearance and others as price drops. The Atlantis and PoP I found cheaper at Walmart (50% off).

This is the first time I can remember in years that Walmart and Kmart have trumped Target for clearance Lego. I realize more drops are to come, but I'm pretty sure I'm out of money. :D

Think there's any chance the Winter Toy Shop or Bakery will go on sale ever? I really like both of them and am kinda thinking it might be better to just bite the bullet and get them before they disappear instead of chancing a sale.

I don't think you'll likely ever see a sale on them. My local Lego store is completely sold out of the Toy Shop and considering its a re-issue from last year I can't imagine it'll be around online for much longer.

I didn't even realize the Toy Shop was still available online. I thought it would be under "seasonal" or "exclusives" but it's under "creator"? Weird. It's been sold out at my local Lego store for a while.

There was a blue box of pieces at Target on clearance but it was still over $10.

Maybe I'm crazy but I cannot find that set or anything similar. I have searched sideways forwards and every which way.

I saw this over on Brothers-Brick. I for one always wondered why they didn't do anything about the mangled instructions and stickers.

QUALITY ISSUES & COMPLAINTS FROM LEGO FANS
1. Instruction booklets come loose in the boxes. They sometimes get damaged during transit. If they were tightly packed in polybags, it could prevent such damages. Stickers also get wrinkled, they could be packed with instructions.

A. Yes we know and we have started to package building instructions, labels and textiles in all sets with more than 1000 pieces in a poly bag. The current solution is a quick and dirty one. Version 2 will be ready with-in the first 3 month of 2011.

2. Fans are having hard time choosing colors from instruction booklets. Black and dark grey are especially very hard to distinguish.

A: It is not only fans that have the issue. All of us have. The last 4 years we have tried to optimize this 2 or 3 times by adjusting the printing technique with no luck. For 2012 second half products we will introduce an out-line for black elements – cross fingers that it will help.

3. Injection marks on transparent parts are ugly, fans don’t find them suitable for building. Especially window/glass pieces require more attention about molding.

A: There have been made some changes but give us an overview of the elements and we can verify/show if they have been corrected

4. Slopes come with different surface textures. Some are completely smooth while others have grain on them. It would be better if they were standardized.

A: 2 – 3 years ago we ensured that all roof tails’ have the same surface. By an unknown reason back in 2003 the surface of roof tails was changed from rough to smooth. All set manufactured the last 2 years should have uniform roof tails

5. Studs on certain parts are sometimes solid and sometimes hollow. This should be standardized too.

A: Sorry no. A hollow stud are there either because we need that building function (a tool for the minifigure fits on to the hole) or because we for technical reasons cannot make the stud hollow from the back. Look at the studs from the back on a plate. The studs is hollow otherwise we cannot control the dimensions.

6. Small tires are covered with some greasy material. Dust sticks on them and it’s hard to clean it.

A: We need the grease in order to remove the part from the mould. Yes it tend to be sticky and we are constantly trying to improve the materials used for tiers as they give other technically challenges.

7. There is a major tone difference in same colors. Dark red, red and yellow are the most troublesome colors about this issue. Also, some pieces are translucent, especially red ones. They look too bright next to other parts in same color.

A: We are constantly improving our colors and many improvements have been made the last 3 – 4 years. Please judge the current quality based on set packaged the last 6 months and feedback on that as we want the right quality.

9. Figure heads or torsos are problematic. Some heads don’t fit on some torsos, they stay too loose.

a. We need some examples, and please do so in order for us to correct the moulds.
Here are my questions:

Why are the boxes so big when the parts fit in half a box? I don't want to throw them away, but they take up so much space.

What happened to the nice plastic tray they used to have to showcase the parts? I know it's to keep costs down, but I was at Walmart yesterday and saw that the cheapo Best Lock sets have a tray.

The old style boxes also had a cardboard flap on the box showing some additional models you could build with the same set. The old airport and race track set I have have several alternate models including a concert theater for the airport and an airport for the race track. Even the old Millennium Falcon, X-Wing, and Tie Interceptor have alternate builds. They only do alternate models for the Creator series now.

love the alternate models; i wish they'd bring those back. love my old idea books, too.

decided to pull the trigger on the visual dictionary for 13 bucks. the luke minifig is going for between 9 and 30 bucks on bricklink. not that i'll ever sell...

i see from my notes that i got the vis dictionary for my son for xmas for 7 bucks - ?!. i have no idea how i swung this; it says "sale + coupon". i need to keep better notes.
http://shop.lego.com/Product/?p=66373 is this what you were looking for?
That's the set I was talking about. Buy two and a pick-a-brick and use the free shipping code.

I like how LEGO isn't changing the black/grey issue in the instructions until mid 2012. Are they already printing 2012 sets? Doesn't make sense.

Also the guy avoided the ugly window question. He should know exactly what the issue is.

EDIT - There are only four planes and 4 SUVs, so yeah get two even if you only have 10 kids coming so they don't all fight over a plane or a SUV.

Just got back from Target where they were busy marking down the toys. They weren't done yet so some of the prices may not have been lowest, but for what I bought they verified that was the low.

I got 2 of the City Corner (7641) sets for $14.98 each, and a few of the Assassin Droid and Clone Trooper battle packs for $5.98 each.

Darth Vader's TIE fighter still wasn't marked down further - $25.xx, and the Echo Base set was $17.xx so I passed on it, hoping that will be available for another drop. Also passed on Darth's TIE fighter.

The Troll Mountain/Castle set was marked down to $60.xx IIRC (or it may have been $70.xx).

Creator helicopter was $6.48

Everything else on clearance was still overpriced, or was not on clearance (many sets that were supposed to be on clearance were full price:bomb:). Still no Battle of Endor anywhere despite being listed as "limited availability" both online and on the in store scanner. In store scanner listed it was still $85.xx anyway, so I would've passed.

BTW some enormous (300 lbs. +) cholo was going through the Ninjago figures when I got there and looked to have cherry picked out about 30 of the little carded ones. Guess some of these are "hot" for resale.

No complaining when you got two City Corners for $30.

i had just resolved not to go hunting for more clearance and just save my money for the new kingdoms sets. but now i think i'm going to have to hit the circuit tomorrow and see what we find...

Target markdowns today...

Vader's Tie $20.xx
Troll Mountain $70.xx
Neptune carrier $40.xx
Wreck Raider $5.98
Ferocious Creatures (Creator) $14.98
Beach House $14.xx

I also got a 9 pack of Star Wars Action figures for $12...big long cardboard box that you can't miss.

Clearance at Target was in full swing, although we are likely two weeks away from the 75% promised land (not sure if Lego sets ever hit that discount, but other toys sure do). I was pretty tempted at the Toy Story Train set for $39.99, all other stuff was just 15% off, but I was surprised to see one Hero Factory set in the clearance section.

I went and didn't find anything marked down any more than 15-30%. Space Police set was still $69, Troll Mountain was still $85 and the others were barely 15%.

Anybody else see the Taj Mahal is selling for $600 now on ebay? Should sell mine now or wait some more? If I wait long enough, maybe I can do a 1 for 1 trade for the UCS MF :)

Not a deal, but Amazon is selling a lot of the 2011 sets now, most at retail price. Just make sure you are buying from Amazon directly and not one of their 3rd party sellers. No sales tax and prime shipping.

Also, saw the question a few pages back as to why the boxes are so much bigger than they need to be. The simple answer is that it is more appealing, especially to kids, for the boxes to be big. I remember saving up when I was younger to get a $80 LEGO set, and how awesome it was to carry this huge box home. It would have been a lot less appealing if it was just big enough to hold the pieces. The other answer is that it allows LEGO to take up more shelf space, and therefore more likely to catch customers eyes. I've also noticed that a lot of LEGO boxes are about as big/long as the completed set ends up being, which to me is a good thing.

As for the alternate sets on the back of the package, LEGO actually answered that question at one point...apparently a lot of people were upset that they didnt provide instructions for the alternate models.

I do miss the windows on big sets though. Definitely increased the appeal

Will the Advent Calendar go on clearance? My Target had a bunch of them. The little "gifts" mostly look like crap, but if it got cheap enough, I figure it would be something fun to do with my young nephew.

It's Santa. And I could've sworn I saw a picture somewhere that had him on a deck chair instead of in a shower... I was surprised myself at the pairing when I opened those doors.
The Xmas Advent Calendar was on sale for $17.xx on S@H a couple weeks back. Long gone now though, I'm afraid.

Picked up another SP Lunar Limo for $17.24 after tax today at WalMart; I wish I would've saved the receipt from the first one I bought at Borders for almost double that back in November. :bomb:

You can thank SD for the quick disappearance of the Stormtrooper. Everyone and their mom jumped on this steal and some quickly went onto eBay. Hm. If you really want it badly just like I did, best bet is paying MSRP and checking TRU or buying it on S@H.

WOW! Your Target has it that low already? If I find them that low I just might have to grab one, but so far my Targets are at 15%-30%. One Target did have the PoP, PM and TS Train sets at 50% (Cupertino, just in case you're wondering Crane).

Is Fercious Creatures the one with the Crocodile/TRex? If so we're behind on that one (same with Vader's TIE). Stil $25.xx each.

BigDaddy, you were asking about the Advent Calendar? It should be on clearance at Target...unfortunately it's still $20-$25.xx for me. I'm going to wait because there are a TON of them.

S@H has the Farm (7637) set in stock as well as some other sets added (just a few new ones). Interesting ones added to the Sold Out section as well. I wonder if those will come back in stock...

mm, thanks for the heads-up, postureking. i want lego cows! i wish the farm didn't use so many big pieces. and i wish i had a much bigger lego budget.

i also thought the advent calendar "toys" were great mini-builds. much more fun, really, to actually build something out of bricks rather than just get a couple of minifig accessories. some of the past advent days have been extremely lame in that area.
