Limited/GOTY/Ultimate editions installing/playing with original disc?

I was wondering if it was possible to install a limited/goty/etc version of a game on the hard disc and play it with the original disc?

I know some games like Oblivion only require you to install the content of the second disc etc and the 1st one is the same as the non goty version.

What this boils down to is that when I'm home for the summer i like to play COD4 with my brother. I have the original sans mappacks and he has a goty version with the mappacks. Was wondering would it be possible to install his disc on my 360 but use my original copy to play it?

In your example yes. The only difference between CoD 4 standard and CoD 4 GotY was that ONLY the first print run of CoD 4 GotY in spring 08 came with a paper code to download the one map pack for the game for free.

As far as I can recall the only three games that have an install feature for the bonus content are Elder Scrolls IV, Fallout and Mass Effect. Not sure about the new Dragon Age ult.
