Look at this obituary for the Sci-Fi channel, it's dead, now known as SYFY.

"The main reason for the change, according to Bonnie Hammer, former head of the network and now president of NBC Universal Cable Entertainment and Universal Cable Productions, and her successor David Howe, is that the name “SCI FI” was too limiting."

What the fuck? Wait wait wait. WHAT THE fuck? That makes no sense. What areas will they hope to travel with the new, unlimited potential of the name SYFY?

Yes, Sci-Fi is limiting if you actually stick to Sci-Fi, but that's the fucking point of the network. I don't even understand why they change the network instead of just dropping it, it's just going to end up playing a lot of the same shit as other networks anyway.

How exactly is SyFy pronounced? Is it just like the Wii and is actually pronounced Sci Fi even though it's not spelled that way?

Yes.

As long as programing stays the same I'm fine. Dont really care what the name is. However everything that I watch on their will have ended its series of new episodes this friday. It would be nice if that bill that was in congress years back did pass that let people pay for just what they want on cable. That way out of the 150 chanels I have I would only pay for at most 10 because all I watch is 10.

I remember flipping through the channels a few months ago and seeing wrestling. On the Sci-Fi channel. I haven't gone back since.

The name was too limiting? No shit, the network was supposed to be about science fiction you idiotic network drone. Though once they started showing wrestling, i guess it was just a matter of time before it really went to shit.

Why?

It isn't like I stopped watching Cartoon Network when they decided to air live-action stuff on occasion. I didn't stop when The Weather Channel decided to be Discovery Channel lite and do Storm Stories. I didn't stop watching ESPN when they started treating the spelling bee and poker as a sport by airing those. Just don't watch wrestling for the one hour they air it on Tuesday on Sci-Fi.
People who wish for ala-carte cable need to be careful what they wish for.
Only downside to ala-carte is that the lower least popular channels may suffer.

oh no, goodbye univision, or say the shopping network.

More channels may also inherit the "reality tv" shows more often since they are popular in general.

overall Tv will suck more, but it's crazy to pay for 50 channels when I only or most people watch one or two.

I think breaking apart the cable networks is a better stronger way to get channels to suck/cost less.

I only have Charter, or go to CenturyTel for tv and both options really suck for channel lineup.

I'd be willing to pay maybe $10 less to cut out the 90 other channels I never watch.... $10 is alot considering I'm paying 125 for phone/internet/cable... which will jump up to 175 once the promotion ends.

I mean, at least stories about thew weather are in keeping with the subject of the weather, wtf does wrestling have to do with science fiction?

To say wrestling is the sole reason I stopped watching the channel was just an exaggeration. Really, I see the same shows on constantly (there's only so much I can take of Ghost Hunters and Stargate), and the budget for their original movies seems to have dropped to $20 and a jug of moonshine (which, while hilarious, get a little tired). Seeing wrestling on the channel where I used to enjoy Farscape and laugh at Who Wants To Be A Super Hero was just the final straw that made me shake my head and begin mourning.

This so stupid. Its not like anyone said SciFi, hmmm. Wish they had more stuff.

And by the way, in what way is wrestling scifi?

Battlestar Galactica is over next week. After that, what do they really have? That show was basically the crown jewel and gave them more credibility as a network than anything in the past 20 years.

Chemically-enhanced humans fighting over golden belts of power? C'mon...that's TOTALLY sci-fi.

I was thinking that too actually. come on though, no aliens, no laser weapons, what kind of shitty science fiction is that?

It's syfy.

If you watched the BSG special last night you would see that Bonnie Hammer is a dumb fuck asswipe who only got ahead in life by being a slut.

So not shocking that she does something stupid.

Oh, you younguns have no appreciation of the past. What about MST3K? Two robots and a janitor ruthlessly mocking movies. It was brilliant.

They could use the current SciFi movies and add MST3K to it to improve the movies substantially.
Aztec Rex ftw.
Check out the imdb featured review (says a lot...)

this movie is an entertaining movie the gore is good and and the CGI is okay the plot is weird. the acting is okay but some of the characters are dumb they use cross bows against a dinosaur. the Spanish the Aztec's speak is somewhat fake. this is the only TV movie have given a high rating to. this movie is like some sci-fi movies like frankenfish, abominable and living hell. entertaining interesting CGI and good gore.so there is one problem with the movie it reminds me of a Jurassic park rip off. so that is my rating and review for aztch rex a good movie with a good amount of gore and some good acting. enjoy this review.

Pretty sure this is the demo that they're now skewing programming towards.

Why don't they ever show movies like Gattaca or The Thirteenth Floor. Hell even show Idiocracy, that's basically where we're all heading right now anyway.

At least I still have BBC America on which to watch Doctor Who and Torchwood. I - Oh buggery, I forgot Eureka! We have to go back and save it!! NOOOOOO!!!! And I'm torn on what will happen to AniMondays. Great idea, not great shows.

Camoor: Comedy Central has Idiocracy out for rent right now, I watched it the other week. My brain cells still cry themselves to sleep at night and wake up screaming.

Stargate is good, about the only thing I could watch.

I don't mind the cheesy movies, they are fun to watch. Trying to make a drinking game out of it is even better, plus the 2nd movie you can't remember and is always a "blast".

Where else could I get my nature vs people fix if it wasn't for these movies... reality isn't as close to this besides shark attacks.

oh no, goodbye univision
Dude....no way, there is some badd @$$ b1tches on that channel...NO ADIOS Univision

Sci Fi kind of sucked anyways.....Saturday was nothing but Crazy big flying killer fish and Crazy big @$$ alligators eating EVeRYBODY

Didn't MST3K start somewhere else?

Turth be told, outside of Kane and the Undertaker, very little of WWE is science-fiction right now. But ECW, unless I am mistaken, gives Sci-Fi some of it highest ratings if not THE highest and that is the main reason they tried it to start.

Don't get me wrong though, I can understand your point of view. I'm as big a Star Trek fan on CAG as anyone and I sure enjoy Ani-Monday's (which naturally have sci-fi themes), and Eureka (Erica Cerra and Salli Richardson =)

:applause::applause::applause::applause:

They should pay to start showing MST3K again, it's better than 99% of the crap thats on the channel these days.

This was inevitable. It's all about copyright.

Sci-Fi is a generic genre term... can't copyright it.

SyFy... well, you can go ahead and copyright the hell out of that.

Only reason. Period.

Well, it is more in the realm of Fantasy. You don't want to meet the people whose particular fantasy that is.

Regarding MST3K, it's long gone. Years and years gone. There are two teams of former MST3K people doing separate ventures.

Mike Nelson leads RiffTrax, which sells just audio tracks you play over your own DVDs. This gives them access to anything out on disc and not just the stuff they could get for free previously

Joel Hodgson is leading Cinematic Titanic, which is much closer to the original MST3K in format, tending toward movies that you might never have heard of otherwise. Oddly, one of the movies they've done so far, 'Santa Claus Conquers the Martians,' was already done on MST3k.

The big annoyance here was that the name SciFi had a double meaning. In SF fandom, there has long been a resentment of the term SciFi. It was seen as disparaging when used by those who only knew the genre from awful movies and TV as opposed to the better novels and stories. The usual pronunciation for stuff held in contempt is 'skiffy.' With a few sterling exceptions the SciFi Channel appears to not understand the difference. It seems as though the rare good stuff gets on purely by accident.

There is no channel called The History Channel, there is a History station, but it's just called History. They changed the name over a year ago. ;)
