See this CAG thread for informaton regarding these 12+1 New Member Only cards. Skip to the last page (or rather, mod posts) to see that these cards are not legit. The issue with these cards is they're not Microsoft activated, and after the first month your service cancels. There is no such thing as a New Member Only card.

I have pm'd the op about this but they have not responded. I suggest to everyone to not buy any "New member only cards."

Yeah I bought the card before I read about the "scam" and once I bought it I also realize it was for "New Members Only", and I could not use it. I just my son use it to make up his own Live account and so far it seems to be working for him.

I'm assuming the code you gave your son will expire after 30 days.
