Lost Odyssey - Gen. Discussion & Info

Bump for the DLC availability.

I'm at level 10 so far. With a party of lvl85 immortals and a lvl 76 Sed with good accessories, the monsters haven't been able to touch me so far (but there are ones with a 100% counter rate :bomb:).

I'm about to hit the 25th floor.

I've only had one fight that was a little tough.

I hear the boss fight is hard, I'll soon find out.

The boss has a move that kills your whole party by the 3rd or 4th turn. No check points, no saves. I don't think I'll be going through that crap again.

I should have watched this video before facing him.

How long did it take to get to that point? I'll definitely review the video when I get there. I have completely forgotten what level my characters are at - maybe I ought to level them up a bit first, or do you gain a bunch of levels on the way to the boss?

Probably took me about an hour or two.

I went in as a level 84 and was level 89 when I got to the boss. Not many enemies in there will level you up when you're that high.

I don't think I'm going to do it again.

I found the dungeon very boring.

You and me both. :(

Oh, by the way, Reflect reflects his Annihilation spell. But the spell doesn't work on him. Go figure. :bomb:

Eh, I'll try again later. Although I hate strategies that spam Reversa, I'll give it a try.

About to enter
Grand Staff
for the final time on disc 4.
Anything I should know? What level should my guys be at? Also, what's a good amount of Mana Bottles and Healing Tanks to take?

If you have enough skills linked to your immortals, you will be fine. I didn't need any items. My characters were upper 70's, and it was cake.

Just make sure you have your absorb guards, counter, reduce casting time(s), etc. equipped.

I made it to the boss of the DLC...and the battle went on and on for a while. I hadn't watched any videos or read any strategies about him.

Eventually,
one of his Annihilations
got me. My strategy was
Divide and Reversa...which is probably what I needed to do anyway. Just got a bad break.

Guess I will have to run back down and try again.

Grand Staff/Gongora is a joke. He's got nothing on the immortal. I went in there at Level ~70 and it was a cakewalk.

Divide takes too long to cast. The Killalon will fuck you up quick. Watch the video zoo posted a page or two back.

My second attempt involved lots of Reversa's, but I kept getting screwed over by deaths. His third Annihilation was what killed that attempt.

I think I've developed a decent strategy:

Pre-battle:
- Enter with the skills noted in the video, but also add auto-HP and auto-MP recovery. Also only have Sed in the first row.
- Put as many +HP skills on Ming and Sarah as you can; they do stack!
- Use the black Kelelons on floor 24B (with Persistence and Crisis Defense) to get the immortals down to 1 HP. Use the basic healing item to get them all to about 100 HP before the boss.

1st round
- Have Sed defend, have all immortals use double Reversas.

2nd round
- Boss will cast reflect on self. Have Sed defend. Have Sarah, Ming, and Seth all use reflect on self followed by an elemental spell on the boss (in that order); the 3 elemental spells will use up the boss's reflect and will not damage you if you have nullify elements. Have Kaim use reflect on self followed by Reversa.

3rd-4th round
- Boss will use either Kelo-ultimate Hit or cast Annihilation. The auto-HP recovery + persistence + crisis defense will protect you against the former; the reflects will protect you from the latter. Use double Reversas with the immortals, and he will go down in the fourth round.

Question for people who beat the game..
Am I almost to a point where I get another tanky melee character, not counting Mack obviously. I just got to the experimental Staff after leaving that under-a-spell town.(disc 2) I recently got Sarah and was disappointed to have yet another caster.

Kaim and Seth are pretty much it. They're all you need.

Yeah, that didn't last long, since he knocked my health down quick. I did get a decent number of them off in the second round. (He didn't reflect.)

You will eventually get Tolten and Sed. They are both the "non-magic" types. I actually liked using Sed, myself.

Whoo, got the fucker!

Only modifications to my strategy:
1) Use the auto HP recovery skill rather than an all-generate spell
2) Arm Sed with the ring that gives Magic Delay 3. This skill will delay Killalon's spells if you hit a perfect, so you can use it to delay his Reflect (and maybe also Annihilation?)

Also, a note - Reflect dies after three spells have been reflected. Plan on him using this in the second round (if you miss the delay with Sed) and use self reflects + elemental spells, in that order for each character for that round. Usually Kaim will go last, so you can have him use reflect + reversa instead.

I took him out part way into the fourth round.

Now, to farm the dungeon for items. :D

How long does it take to get to that DLC boss starting from the first floor? I don't want it to be like Eternal Sonata's optional Dungeon (Mysterious Unision). That one took forever.

If you bother with the random battles, it might take around 2 hours. However, if you just want to reach the boss, you can turn-tail from every battle except the random minibosses on floors 16B-19B and 21B-24B and make it down in less than 30 minutes.

Regarding the ending:

It pretty much takes a 180 from the dark nature of the first half of the game. It seemed kinda typical with Jansen getting married and all that stuff. I personally would have preferred the game to stay darker in nature. There was a dream early on about Kaim being imprisoned in darkness for a really long time before being freed and some other guy gets his eyes burned.

There were still moments of awesomeness in the game like the battle on top of the train or the first time you hear that one song when you fight Gongora's magic guards.

Not to say I didn't love this game as it's the first RPG in a long time that I've really been hooked on. I just can't help thinking it could have been better if it retained its darkness.

That wasn't Kaim, that was Seth.

The man/beast who saved her ending up being
Sed's
father figure.

I think the one he's talking about is the 'they live in shells" and that was with kaim.

Yeah thats the one.

It's no Ancient Dungeon from Lufia 2. To do it properly and have a chance at actually completing it, you had to spend around 4 hours minimum. No saves and full-party heals were random and extremely rare. Plus the last 20 floors could pretty much wipe the floor with you in one round if they decided to be bitches

I'm suddenly reminded of a similar bonus dungeon in Tales of Phantasia. If I hadn't been playing that on an emulator with save states, I never would have made it to the bottom.

I know I messed around with Lufia II at one point. I think I beat it and never bothered with that Ancient Dungeon, but its been years...

Mistwalker: My party isn't level 99 yet. I want more DLC. How 'bout an actual difficult dungeon, and NOT difficult because the end boss is a cheap bastard? :D

My copy just arrived...anyone know where to get a replacement DVD case like the one Asia got? You know, something that holds 4 discs instead of fucking stacking them on top of each-fucking-other?

I am disappointed with how Microsoft handled that-and they're going to have to deal with it more in the coming years. Both Sega and Sony did a nice job of it on the Saturn and Playstation IMO. I shutter to think what Microsoft's going to do to fit five or six discs in without actually changing the basic design :D

What game has ever used 5 or 6 discs?

I finished up disc 2 and started on disc 3 earlier today. Are the last two discs about the same length as the first two, about 10 hours each?

If I remember clearly, I think discs 2 and 4 were shorter(disc 2 in particular) while 1 and 3 were longer. I think 4 had a lot of CG/cutscenes.

I can't remember off hand but I know I own a lot of games for different platforms that came on at least 4-6 discs. Not sure if I've had anything with more than 6 though.

Did they ever release the pre-order bonus for everyone to download on Xbox LIVE?

Well, I guess I found the answer on my own. So they changed the preorder bonus from a weapon/mission to an accessory/dream. That stuff was then later released on the marketplace for 200 points? The confusion was that I was looking for info on a downloaded weapon/mission and there isn't any, heh.

The preorder "Double Bonus Pack" was an accessory and an additional dream. You can grab it for free off the Japanese marketplace if you set up a Japanese account.

The 200pt item on XBLM is for a ring, dream, and cutscene viewer. The 400pt is the extra mission.

So far i'm enjoying the game...the dreams a nice, but they REALLY should have been narrated. I just end up skipping/fast-forwarding through them when they come up. Jansen is annoying as hell but that was to be expected. Surprisingly, i don't mind the grinding, which as of late hate been something that kept me away from RPGs. At this point, i'm 8 hours in on Disc 1 and would give the game 8/10. More options to for equipment would be nice, and the dreams should have been narrated. The story itself is alright, nothing mindblowing, but interesting....

The game only gets better as you progress through it. I really like the dreams the way they are. There are a lot of really good ones, so you should read them instead of skipping them. You find out a lot more about Kaim as a character and more of his backstory. Jansen gets a bit less annoying/funnier as the game goes on as well. Grinding? This game is the opposite of level grinding. You're not even a quarter of the way through the game, the story unravels more a bit later on.

I'm usually lucky if a game holds my attention for 8-10 hours. This game held my attention for like 75 hours. The last game to do that was Final Fantasy X.

So I started playing Lost Odyssey last night. About four hours in (Grand Staff Construction Base), so I can't say a whole hell of a lot, but I'm liking it thus far. The whole ring system is cool, but I honestly only get perfect maybe one out of eight to ten times. Then again, I haven't exactly used it a whole hell of a lot with Jansen being fairly weak, and having taught Kaim and Seth magic as well.

You'll get used to the timing and soon you will be getting perfects the majority of the time.

Kaim and Seth should always attack. Always.

The only thing I ever do with them is attack, steal if I know an enemy has an important item, or use prayer. Probably 95% of the time I use attack though.

I just beat
the two worm things at grand staff
...and i'm 7-8 hours in...am i going too slow? My characters are level 17 after grinding for about an hour or so to get Kaim and Seth to learn anti-paralysis.

That's the only real time I ever grinded in that game. You might have to grind to get your party knowing anti-petrify though later in the game(having your whole party petrified in one turn is insta game over and hella annoying).

Even if they don't do a whole hell of a lot of damage and could end up wearing me out?

Sorry if it should be common sense, but I'm quite new to RPG's, this being my first on 360 as well.

Kaim's magic is fairly weak compared to Jansen, while Seth's is in between the two. Kaim should always attack (unless you need to use an item or spell to heal). Formation is also important; Kaim and Seth should be up front, Jansen in the back. Basically, Jansen is your magic goto guy, Kaim and Seth are there to attack and heal him when needed.

My case arrived today, it's a snug fit, but it looks much better than having the discs stacked on top of each other. Really fast shipping too, ordered on the 16th, shipped out of OH, and got here today (18th) in upstate NY. Pictures below;

i have a question about experience and leveling up -

as i understand it, there's a certain level cap for each area. also, there are random encounters. so, are you guys just running around in circles looking for an encounter to max out on that cap, or are you guys just running through like normal and whatever happens happens?
