CAGiversary!
I'm about 9 hours in, and I can't take it anymore. I like the quaint, simple story. I like the bright, vibrant colors and the well-drawn sprites. The characters are generic, but interesting enough...
But the battles SUCK. They suck it hard. I just hit auto-battle for every fight, because there's little in the way of pay-off in terms of strategy. I gain nothing but extra button presses if I do it manually. I don't even use "tactics" scripts for my auto battling. Just straight up physical attacks. Hit the button, look out the window, check back in two minutes and I've won.
Normally I have no problem with auto battling. I loved the original Breath of Fire, which was the first RPG I'd played with an auto-battle feature. But there, I only used auto battling for the easy enemies as I backtracked, since I'd get pounded by enemies at my level. Not so with Lunar. I can walk into a completely new area, and hit auto battle with little fear.
And hit auto-battle I do. The random encounters come once every five steps. One-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, FIGHT. Hit "A," look away! Listen to battle music for a few minutes. Twiddle thumbs. Hum a ditty. Kick a dog. Battle over? Ok. One-one-thousand, two-one-thousand...
It's a shame, I almost feel compelled to finish it, because I have the time to during my commute, and because I like to finish what I start, but this is just too much. And before anyone mentions it, I am aware that there is "Perfume" to lower the encounter rate. I refuse to use it, since once I start using it, I'll never stop. I'll get hooked on Perfume. I won't level up. The game experience will spiral ever downward into the abyss.
...And it started out so well!
