Lunar Legend, you disappoint me!

WildWop

CAGiversary!
I'm about 9 hours in, and I can't take it anymore. I like the quaint, simple story. I like the bright, vibrant colors and the well-drawn sprites. The characters are generic, but interesting enough...

But the battles SUCK. They suck it hard. I just hit auto-battle for every fight, because there's little in the way of pay-off in terms of strategy. I gain nothing but extra button presses if I do it manually. I don't even use "tactics" scripts for my auto battling. Just straight up physical attacks. Hit the button, look out the window, check back in two minutes and I've won.

Normally I have no problem with auto battling. I loved the original Breath of Fire, which was the first RPG I'd played with an auto-battle feature. But there, I only used auto battling for the easy enemies as I backtracked, since I'd get pounded by enemies at my level. Not so with Lunar. I can walk into a completely new area, and hit auto battle with little fear.

And hit auto-battle I do. The random encounters come once every five steps. One-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, FIGHT. Hit "A," look away! Listen to battle music for a few minutes. Twiddle thumbs. Hum a ditty. Kick a dog. Battle over? Ok. One-one-thousand, two-one-thousand...

It's a shame, I almost feel compelled to finish it, because I have the time to during my commute, and because I like to finish what I start, but this is just too much. And before anyone mentions it, I am aware that there is "Perfume" to lower the encounter rate. I refuse to use it, since once I start using it, I'll never stop. I'll get hooked on Perfume. I won't level up. The game experience will spiral ever downward into the abyss.

...And it started out so well!
I feel the same, but I stuck it out and beat it. It really doesn't get any better.
How long did it take to beat? If this sucker is over 20 hours, it's getting eBayed/traded REAL soon. Any takers? ... it's an, um... excellent... engaging game... with a deep battle system...
I don't remember it being TAHT bad on TSS. Was it toned down for GBA?
1) Normal enemies do not use magic (at least to the point I am at)

2) Normal enemies take a good amount of damage from magic users' melee attacks

3) Magic users have to use physical attacks to charge their special attack meter. WHY? They're MAGIC USERS dammit!

4) Speaking of special attack meters, it reminds me of a reverse-engineered Limit Break, but somewhere along the line the engineer decided to study the bottom of a bottle of tequila rather then fix up a part of his code.

5) 90% of the enemies can be easily handled with physical attacks. The ones that don't, oddly enough are magic resistant too, and take roughly the same amount of damage either way. Refer again to AUTO BATTLING SUCKS

6) Zero customization of character development. Usually RPGs add depth by letting you control where to focus your character's strengths and abilities. Here, you get assigned new spells or abilities at certain levels. Woo hoo. Even Final Fantasy ONE let you pick your spells.

I really enjoyed Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete...but Lunar Legend was a disappointment, and the battles were boring as hell. (Not to mention LL has random battles, and I hate random battles)

As for how long the game takes to beat: normally 14-16 hours.

Hmm, maybe I'll tough it out, if there's only 5 more ours of it. I'd hate to leave it unfinished before I unload it.

It was alright, not as good as the versions done by Working Designs localizations on Sega CD or PS1, But it was definatly a good way to waste time while in 2 hours lectures last year.

I have both Lunars on PSX, they are some of my favorite games. I played through Lunar Legends, but it doesnt compare to the PSX counterpart. Its ok if you have never played the PSX (or sega) Lunar, but trying to compare them is crazy. The GBA version is just dumbed down, and no challenge at all, where as I found the PSX version to be challenging if I remember correct. I still think you should beat the GBA version for the hell of it.

I probably will, but I'll take some time away from it to let the disappointment fade a bit. Hey, it worked for Chaos Legion.

ZOE Fist of Mars is currently at bat, with Lunar riding the pine.
zoe is a disapointment too.

very shallow imo.
Yeah, it's sort of a pared-down Fire Emblem with mechs. Not much in the way of strategy, but I'm enjoying playing through it. Decent storyline too.

I'm a sucker for FE-style games.

I personally love Lunar Legend although I'll admit it's not as good as the PSX versions. I do prefer random battles and where characters no longer have to walk around the battle to fight enemies, since I prefer the more tradition fighting of RPG games. I personally prefer it when the difficulty is dumb down quite a bit because I don't have to worry about being frustrated, making it easier for me to play the game.

As for ZOE: FoM, I think the game is fantastic. Not the greatest strategy RPG on GBA, but truly a good game. I loved the battles and the story was great. Probably one of the best deals I ever got, since I found the game for $7.99 used at my EB, with box and instructions.

this is my favorite gba rpg, i admit its very easy, but that didnt make it less fun for me.

wait til u get to the final boss, thats a tough fight

I played this on Sega CD so long ago I can't remember enough to say if it was any different but somehow I cannot resist the urge to make a meaningless contribution to this topic.
