Chargers 34 - Broncos 28
There's really no way I can adequately capture the epicness of this game in words, but I'll try. Definitely one of the most amazing Madden games I've ever been a part of (and that's hundreds if not thousands at this point). I'll sum it up thusly:
The Chargers triumphed by one inch and by one second. You'll see what I mean shortly...
I went into this game with the same strategy I seem to take with all my games against mog these days, as coined by the immortal Scottie Smalls: "Don't be a goofus." Games where I throw 4 or 5 interceptions are so common against mog that in our Bears-Panthers game I was basically like "you're gonna lose, just don't throw 5 picks." It was clear early on that I was in a similar shell this game, but the difference was my ground game actually held up. After the Broncos marched it down the field easily to open the game (as they would do much of the night) the Chargers came back with a strong first drive of their own featuring a ton of Ryan Mathews, capped off with a 3 yard run by Jamal Lewis 2.0 (his only carry of the game, but he's now scored in two straight weeks).
The second quarter is where things began to unravel as they always do. The Broncos D stepped up and their offense remained unstoppable, scoring 14 points unanswered to go up 21-7 at the half. Rivers also made his sole mistake of the game when he forced a ball deep for Moss which was picked off (the type of boneheaded play I usually make about 5 or 6 times against mog). What kept the Chargers in the game here was a fumble by the Broncos deep in Chargers territory, which while the Chargers didn't have enough time to capitalize, it at least kept them within 2.
The Chargers got the ball to open up the 3rd and needed a score to keep the game respectable, and they managed to get it when they drove the length of the field and score on a two yard Antonio Gates TD (for future historians, this is the moment when Philip Rivers finally shook the Broncos monkey off his back). The Broncos responded however, driving and capping it with a Moreno receiving TD to put them up 28-14 going into the 4th quarter.
What follows is Philip Rivers just going bananas in so grand a fashion so as to make me wonder what the hell I was thinking trying to trade him in the offseason (sorry Philip!) The Chargers put together a long drive, still running plenty since it had been working all game, culminating in a ridiculous 27 yard TD to Vincent Jackson in deep coverage (
HIGHLIGHT). With 3:28 left on the clock and all their timeouts, the Chargers made the bold decision to onside kick and Darrell Stuckey actually came up with the recovery. However, though they put together a good drive they were ultimately stopped on 4th and 1 with under two minutes left. Things looked dire, but the D came up huge when they stopped a Tebow scramble on third down by
one inch, forcing the punt. With 1:29 left and no timeouts from their own 20, facing the league's top pass defense, things seemed grim. The drive started off well but stalled after one first down, but Rivers completed a long pass to Jackson on 4th and 2 but it was in the middle of the field so they had to run up and spike it. This left the Chargers with 10 seconds left on the Denver 29. The first deep pass was intended for Moss but incomplete, but with 5 seconds left Rivers found Gates who carried a defender across the goal line with
one second left on the clock to tie the game (
HIGHLIGHT). After the extra point the Broncos tried to lateral the squib which almost ended in disaster, but they managed to recover.
The Chargers won the toss in OT and started the same way they had all game, pounding the ball. Mathews first carry went for 15 and his next for 6, but he was then stuffed, bringing up 3rd and 3 on the SD 42. The Broncos, perhaps excepting a screen or a short out to Gates (which had been money all night) crowded the line, allowing Vincent Jackson to slip behind the D and catch an over the shoulder pass which he took 58 yards to the house, ending the game (
HIGHLIGHT). And what a game it was.
The Chargers put up 459 yards of offense, which must be pretty close to a record against mog in this league.
Rivers was 22 of 33 for 350 yards, 4 TDs and 1 INT. His best game against the Broncos by a mile.
Mathews carried it 24 times for 113 yards. Nothing flashy at 4.7ypc, but just a solid workmanlike effort. He added 3 catches for 46 yards.
Vincent Jackson led the way with 7 catches for 157 yards and 2 TDs. Gates had 9 catches for 88 yards and 2 scores.
Tebow was great, going 14 of 18 for 249 yards, 2 TDs and no picks.
Chris West carried 9 times for 107 yards, though Tebow and Jermaine Baker had the TDs.
Knowshon Moreno (who is now primarily a WR it seems) was the leading receiver with 6 catches for 80 yards and a score.

gg mog! Definitely an incredible game, I'm still somewhat high off the rush (which might explain the epic recap). As I mentioned before, you're the last league regular I've never defeated, so that makes it extra special.
Not to mention.. Chargers First Place! I'm enjoying that while it lasts.
