Rockstar is working on a follow-up to controversial 2003 stealth-action game Manhunt, where players were tasked with violently murdering gang members to help make underground snuff films.

It's due out on PlayStation 2, PSP and - believe it or not - Wii as soon as this summer, with primary development on the PS2/PSP versions going on at Rockstar's new London studio in conjunction with Rockstar North, while the publisher's Toronto studio has a go at the Wii version.

"With Manhunt 2 we have tried to create a game that stays close to the original concept of chilling suspense and stealth, whilst pushing the game design and storytelling forward," said Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games.

"We are also excited to have our newest development team, Rockstar London, working on the title alongside our two established UK studios, Rockstar North and Leeds."

Manhunt 2 doesn't appear to have been rated yet, in case you're wondering.

The original Manhunt, originally a PlayStation 2 exclusive but also subsequently released on PC and Xbox, attracted a bit of controversy when it was first released - although apart from yards of frothing copy and Daily Mail headlines nothing much ever came from it. The press, eh? We have no real power."

Has this been mentioned before? Using the Wiimote to break necks and stab people in the eyes? That's what it's all supposed to be about.

I don't see the wii getting a PS2/PSP port as a good thing. This is not going to help them with the crowd that thinks the wii hardware is not next gen.

I can't believe nintendo is allowing this.

I can see the headlines now: "Nintendo Wii is Teaching Your Children How to Kill with Violent Murder Simulator" and it'll go on about how the intuitive controls make you mimic the act of killing.

Which I guess is a pretty strange thing-- I mean, we've always killed things with buttons, but now you'll physically mimic it with the wii controls.

I guess Nintendo is trying to shake the "kiddie" image this time around. The GC had 47 M-rated games for it's entire lifespan. The Wii already has 4 in less than 3 months with plenty more in the queue.

Rockstar is finnaly supporting Nintendo, they have I think Rockstar Toronto working on the Wii version so it's not some lazy port.

I'm pretty stoked about this. I don't have a PS2, so I'm down to play the Wii version. I was worried about them putting development of the Wii version on a different studio than the other two versions, but it looks like Rockstar Toronto was the developer behind The Warriors, which is a totally kick-ass game.

Kinda sucks the Wii is getting another port, but on the other hand it is good to see what is possibly the most controversially violent game ever released being brought to the kiddie-stigma'd console.

How is it a port if the game isn't even out yet?

Anyway, being able to stab people in the game causing blood to spurt everywhere with real life stabbing motions will be awesome!! I might even have to buy a ski mask or something.

Certainly very surprising to hear from Rockstar on a Nintendo system. I could give a crap about their games, but if it brings more people and more games to the system, then why not?

I never heard much about the original Manhunt. Then again, I never paid much attention to the Playstation front until recently. I would hope for something other than running away from the police and bashing random pedestrians on a street corner.

Actually I am kinda excited, though I never really got into the original manhunt, this game would be cool on the Wii with stabbing controlls and stuff, that is if RS make it a good game.

He's right. This isn't a port, it's a multiplatform release.

PS2/PSP/Wii FTW? Get used to it, as it's the new multiplatform trend.

Never really cared enough about Manhunt to play it, so this doesn't do much for me. I'm more intrigued by Godfather.

Well..... yes and no. It seems that most of these games will be developed for the PS2 and then have Wii functionality tacked on. It seems like a game like Rayman will be the exception for WiiS2 games rather then the rule.

HELL YES! I loved the first Manhunt and I've been waiting for this forever. I don't care if it's a port or not, I can't wait to bash Mr. Smiley Face with a baseball bat. Good times! :) BRING BACK PIGSY!

This is also quite possibly a test by Rockstar to see whether or not to support the Wii with GTA4.

Manhunt has more in common with Metal Gear Solid than GTA in terms of gameplay. In terms of violence, Mahunt exeeds GTA.

the wii version will probly be a completely diferent game

Example: Manhunt 2 paramedic! A race against time to follow a killers path and give his victims medical treatment!

I was actually making more of a reference to Rockstar's tendancy to create violent games, not really saying that Manhunt is a GTA-clone.

But hey, if its more like MGS, then I'll probably like it. Maybe I shall pick up the first one for PS2...

Also, I agree with your other thought regarding future GTA titles on Wii. I bet Rockstar is testing the water. Although I'm seeing this as a really positive sign that we'll definitely see some form of a GTA game on Wii. Maybe not 4, but some kind of port or spin-off.

Reggie's actions are certainly paying off.

I played the original Manhunt as a rental, and made it through around 5 levels or so. It is in the same vein as MGS, but it is definitely more slow and plodding. If I can remember correctly, it was hard as hell and that is why I didn't get further.

It is a sadistic game, but has a very interesting premise and I have always wanted to go back and beat it. Should be able to get it cheap as hell now.

Manhunt 2 will most likely be a rental as well, at least at first.

I just been thinking, this could potentially end the Nintendo is kiddie argument because well if it is true you use the Wiimote to slash a throat, well you tell me how kiddie that is, lol.

A lot of the later levels are more action oriented since you have a gun. There's still a lot of stealth, but there's a lot of gunfights too.

I doubt Manhunt 2 will be as good as the first one, since it's made by London (who haven't made anything), Leeds (who made the PSP GTA games), and Toronto (who made The Warriors) instead of North (who made the first one and the console GTA games, as well as Lemmings and Space Station Silicon Valley). But it could still be fun.

I think its interesting that Rockstar decided to stay with the PS2 instead of the PS3, but the Wii version could be super cool.

The PS2 is still the best selling system, and all three of those systems are certainly cheaper to make for than the PS3 & 360. I'll probably be playing the game on PSP.

I was hoping for this game on 360, since I really enjoyed the first game.

I'll definitely keep my eye out on this Wii version, see how it turns out.

I'm still wondering how Nintendo allowed this. Sure, it lessens Nintendo's kiddy image, but that's at the expense on some potentially-devastating press against the system itself after this game's released. Yellow journalism shows on news networks are going to have a field day.

What I fear about it, specifically, is that legislators would try to push laws against having games replicate acts like what Manhunt features (if you'll excuse that overly-convoluted sentence). I wouldn't see any free speech arguments winning here either. I'd imagine that it'd be hard to convince folks that it's freedom of speech to replicate acts like that in the privacy of one's home. I hope it wouldn't have any effects on, say, being able to program armament-swinging in less-violent games.

EDIT: Been updating and restructuring the post to better say what I'm concerned about, at least before I found out there was a reply to the original post below.

I guess what remains to be seen, though, is the financial benefit of having Manhunt 2 on the system, counteracted by the decisions from hesitant and ESRB-ignorant parents to not get a Wii afterall.[/quote]Non gamers love Wii sports as gamers too, but sell a guy who only plays shooters a Wii and well... Lets face it, the magic the Wii once had is wearing off where everybody is oh look at how fun Wii sports is and then they buy one, and now Nintendo is going to offer a wide variety of games. As for the ERSB-ignorant parents, I don't think there is as many as them as gamers who want M rated games, and besides the only reason they do complain is not that the games are out there, but because they are to fucking lazy to actually be good parents and don't let their kids play those games so they just want them banned. So I think that M game players might find the Wii now because of how graphic manhunt is going to be, they already got the non gamer and now they need the core gamer.

actually I agree with sir_fragalot... the Wii definitely needs some mature games to attract more hardcore gamers to the system. I think the "kiddy image" argument is a little pointless as a negative comment against nintendo though. Nintendo makes some of the best games ever created, and I couldn't care less what rating the game has. If it's fun, then I'll enjoy playing it.
I love a good first person shooter abut I also love playing a zelda or mario game too.

as for manhunt 2 specifically this could be freaking awesome. I loved the first one on ps2. The atmosphere, violence, and the storyline all made it a lot of fun to play. It was a little challenging at certain parts but that's better than a cakewalk game. The wii controls could make manhunt 2 a huge success as far as 3rd party games go. I just hope they put some serious advertising effort into it.
Just look at what the negative press did for GTA and mortal kombat :)

For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, here's the teaser trailer.

I need to get back to playing the first one. I stopped playing it half way through. I hate when I do that. Does anyone else do that?

Instead of cutting someones throat you will pull there hair.
On the Wii you can spit on someone, instead of smashing there face into oblivion with a baseball bat.
You can also call someone a doo doo head instead of ripping out there spinal cord.

This is fucking awesome. Exactly what Nintendo needed to shut the critics up about this being a kiddie console. Regardless of graphics, there is no way a gamer who played Manhunt can say that they aren't looking forward to performing those sneak kills. Now I know I'm coming off sadistic, but IMHO the Wii is the best platform for this type of game. To me it all comes down to the controls on whether this game is truly successful. I'm happy with the Wii graphics and Rockstar has decent story lines in their titles, so controls is where it is at. Thank you Rockstar and Kudos Nintendo:D

nice ATTEMPT at being witty, a lil more practice and you might get someone to laugh

Everyone who hasn't beaten this game... should. Sure the game is difficult, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it. If you have a USB voice headset, you can stick it in the PS2 and the director will talk to you through the earphone. It makes that game that much more insane.

The gun battles add a whole different perspective on the madness. Faces get blown away entirely and its just crazy on the whole. But as the story goes forward, it becomes more of a revenge tale ala Kill Bill rather than just a game about killing people for a snuff film. I mean Pigsy is probably one of the greatest video game villains of all-time and I think everyone deserves to have a go-round with him at least once.

Do you recommend I play this in the dark in the middle of the night? I want to pee pee my pants.

Mark me down as being excited for this games, I too played and beat the first one... it DID start slowly as you were armed with glass shards and wire and other kinda lame items to kill the bad guys, but as soon as you started getting guns, the excitement cranked up greatly, it can also be played with the headset... which was used as a way to draw attention to yourself in order to lure the gang members to you and make the kill... I remeber the part with Piggsy scaring the crap out of me, luckily I beat him on the second try... amazingly this is the game that got me hooked on stealth action type games and led me into the deeper Splinter Cell series as a result

Looking forward to a Wii version of 2

So it's another PS2 port with Wii controls tacked on? Eh, I wonder how it'll turn out...

It's not a horror game in the 'pee pee' yourself sense. If anything, the first game is setup more like Saw/Hostel.

The Director, basically Jigsaw, instructs you to kill gang members so he can get it on tape for the snuff film market. It's built less around puzzles though and more around brutality like Hostel.

Basically if you want to get a sense of the game, watch Hostel and place yourself in the shoes of the people doing the killing. That's how the first Manhunt is setup. Eventually however, the game evolves into more of a gunfight game and stealth kills are thrown out the windows (it's just easier to walk up to a guy and shoot his face off).

Manhunt 2 appears to built less on the 8mm 'snuff film' motif of the first one and seems to have more of a Jacob's Ladder type vibe to it. I'm really looking forward to it.

I really doubt manhunt is going to have "homocidal mimicing actions!" as everyone thinks. At least to the point where you use the wii mote as a knife and slit someones throat with it.

The teaser trailer at 1up/Gamevideos graphically looked like shit. And by "shit", I mean 'weak effort for the PSP'. That's inexcusable on the Wii and until it shakes out that we're seeing PSP footage (and NOT from the Wii), my buzz for this game is officially killed.

I can only forgive underachieving graphics up to a point. For the sake of the remainder of the Wii's lifespan, I hope I'm not alone there.

Of course it is. It wouldn't be Manhunt if it didn't. Get ready for:

Throat slit - hold the wiimote sideways and slice from left to right

Screwdriver - hold the wiimote sideways then plunge it into someone's head from right to left, then twist the wiimote to scramble their brains

Suffocation - quickly bring the wiimote and nunchuck together in front of you then shack violently to choke your victim to death

Neck snap - bring the wiimote and nunchuck together in front of you with the wiimote above the nunchuck. Then quickly pull them apart to twist your victim's neck.

Wow. Manhunt 2 lost your buzz. Excuse me while I grab my violin.

I'm hoping for a cannibalism kill which involves placing the Wiimote in my mouth.

Manhunt is definetly one of the best games I've ever played. I really hope the second one can capture what the first had.

Those graphics weren't very impressive. But it is Rockstar, so I guess I shouldn't really be expecting much in the way of graphics. They'll do. They looked pretty much exactly how the first game did. As long as you have component cables it should look fine.

It looks like it might be taking place in an abusive prison or something. That sounds pretty cool. All the little cells and rooms will make for an atmoshpere very similar to Hostel.

This isn't a port of a PS2 version. This is a multi-platform follow up/sequel to manhunt.

I found the final boxart design. I'm assuming this isn't old news because no one has posted it yet.

I don't like it, personally. It doesn't seem like it's going to have the same atmosphere as the first game.

It depends on what the lead SKU is, which I'm betting is the PS2 version.

Go to IGN, Gamespot, Gametrailers, etc. and you will see this is a totally new title with a different lead character.
