Mario Kart 64 VC on 1/29/07!

MK:DD isn't the worst Mario Kart game, then for me it was at least the least fun. Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 are tops on the consoles.

MK64 was my 2nd most played cart for N64, right after Goldeneye. I will definately be buying this, as it's one of about 5 games I'd "rebuy" to have them on the Wii.
If wide tracks are an issue, then I don't see MK64 necessarily doing things better than MKDD. There's no doubt that MKDD gives drivers more wide stretches to allow for passing than MK64, but I think suggesting MKDD's tracks are "boring and uninspired" is too emphatic by half. It suggests to me that maybe you didn't play the game as much as you should have to make big statements like "play control is a non-issue." With those kinds of blanket statements, you'd make a terrific game reviewer for IGN.
No dude, the tracks are simply boring and uninspired. I played through two Grand Prixs before calling it quits, and yeah, it was because the tracks were way too wide and uninspired. Granted, they are designed in much the same way a real go-kart track would be designed (in terms of track layout, not setting), but that doesn't necessarily equate to fun. The tracks are noticeably wider than the 64 version's tracks, and they are therefore less fun to navigate for me. The only track I actually enjoyed in MKDD was Donkey Kong's track, and that was because - you guessed it - it wasn't as wide as the rest. It was also surprisingly challenging compared to the rest of those wimpy courses.

Thank you. It seems impossible on this forum for people to believe that there are some people out there that don't like this game.
I'd definitely be downloading this if online multiplayer was available. Maybe it will be eventually.
agreed...I wish Nintendo had their shit together with the online component of the Wii...Because right now, the system is shotty
Ditto.
I'll triple that...Also...MK64 was meant to be played with 4 people...Playing against the computer represents about 1/10th the fun of this title...That's why I'm so dissappointed that this doesn't have an online component
agreed...I wish Nintendo had their shit together with the online component of the Wii...Because right now, the system is shotty
That's an entirely different issue. VC games were never intended to be modified to include online play, whether they had their online component fully operational or not.
it must be noon somewhere... lol
LOL, true, so go ahead and pop open a cold one while you're at it!!

Man I was all set to buy this and then on the download screen it said it can't save ghost data b/c there is no controller pak. Come on Nintendo, you couldn't have saved the data to the Wii itself? Isn't that what they do with game saves for cartridges that had batteries in them...what's the big deal? I'm sure the game will still be fun but it's disappointing if it's partially crippled, unless I am misinterpreting that info..?

No, you're right - there is no support for ghosts because the game does not recognize flash memory, SD cards, or GameCube memory cards as an N64 controller pack.

But whatever. As far as I can tell, there's nothing else that the game saves besides times and ghosts, and nothing is gained by beating the game fully. Disappoints me too, though; I wish that there was at least support for records. Actually, there might be support for records if records are only recorded from times achieved in Time Trial mode and not the Grand Prix, as Grand Prix is all I have done so far.

I'm surprised so many people are all over this game. I tried to put this in my N64 today and realized that this is one of my least favorite versions. Give me the original anyday! (please note that any Mario Kart is a good Mario Kart, I'm just saying that this one isn't my fav)

So wait, I just beat Mushroom cup 50cc, i got the gold (yay)..so it didn't save? I didn't check...but... I'll be really pissed if it doesn't save !!

If I remember correctly, that saved to the cart. The only feature that may have been genked is the ability to save ghosts. The one thing I don't understand is that the Virtual Console saves acts like a save state meaning if you could race ghosts without a memory card (just not saving them) you should be able to race them regardless of where the game saves.
