Mario Kart DS

Is that the one with the snowmen? Frappe in French means "to hit" so maybe that was Nintendo's joke that we will always run and hit the snowmen

I was going to get it at BB so I could get it for $30 after GGC, but since BB rarely has games on their release date, I think I'll pre-order from EB and just pay full price.

Thanks! Major props go to OTM. He made that wonderful piece of eye-candy...and of course, it's Lunar related...so who can't like it? ;)

Wow... I went (against better judgment) to the Mario Kart DS board over at GameFAQs. If anyone ever gets irritated with people on CAG, go spend 10 minutes over there and you'll be ever-so-thankful for the community we have here.

Anyway, Nov. 7th the Nintendo WiFi site goes live. Looking forward to the info there. :)

I just read that it was the 7th as well. I thought it was launching on the 14th for some reason. Glad we get a week jump before Mario Kart to get all our ducks (and routers) in a row.

Good screenshots of the WiFi config screen here:

*fingers crossed* Will we maybe get some offical online play for some local-only games? (Meteos please!!)

Heh, yeah, GameFAQs has a good reputation of having dumb/bad members.

I'm checking out the IGN video right now, for those who don't want to download the massive file, here are the Balloon Battle tracks. If you can, its worth checking out. I guess this is a spoiler...

BALLOON BATTLE
Nintendo DS
Twilight House
Palm Shore
Tart Top
Block Fort (CLASSIC AWESOME BATTLE TRACK!!!!!!!!!)
Pipe Plaza (MK:DD classic track)

Other Balloon Battle notes:

- You start out with only 4 balloons, but only one is inflated. To inflate the other 3, you have to blow in the microphone. I am not kidding, and you'll look like a fool in public doing this. The other option is to press select repeatedly, but that works slowly.
- Balloon stealing boost from MK;DD is back.
- There is a vs. CPU mode.

Shine Runners mode:

- Race to find shines on the battle mode stages
- Shines appear on BOTH screens, so you can use the touch screen as a map to find shines
- Hit other players, and they lose shines (duh)
- There's a clock that counts down, and at the end of each interval, two players get booted
- Looks like a max of 8 players can play this mode.
- Second screen also shows how many shines each player has, and the item that they are currently holding.

Mission Mode:
- There are six levels of missions available, and nine missions in the level that the demo shows. So if thats the case for all levels, there should be 54 missions.
- Boss battles are included, and they looked great.

Wow, just watched all the IGN videos. AMAZING. I'm even more stoked for this game than I was before, which is impressive!

The game is great. ;) I can't wait for people to FINALLY get on WFC. ~_~;;;

Been playing for awhile without anyone really on. Damn me getting an early copy. ;P

How's the control on it? It seems like the powersliding/turbo boosting might be a little tough on the thumbs with a D-pad rather than a stick. See you online in a little over a week! :)

No, actually it works just fine. At first it was somewhat weird to get used to, but once you get into the game and start playing more it just seems like the thing to do around the corners.

I actually liked collecting coins. Didn't it make you go faster? So every passing lap it was a nice little challenge to get the coins and be rewarded by increased speed.

Yeah.. for every 10 coins you collected, your speed would increase one interval. So.. it awarded you with that speed increase for your driving technique/skill, basically. I liked that a lot as well.

Anyway.. you guys aren't used to a D-pad for driving Mario Kart? From that I can deduce that you guys are probably from the last-gen or current-gen of gaming. Definitely not old-schoolers.. I'm totally used to a D-pad having found my kart racing origins in the original, and greatest, Super Mario Kart.

As long as the control is a nice, tight combination of MK64 and SMK, annnd faaaaaaaar from that of Super Circuit, I'll be ecstatic, lol.

I definitely can't wait for this title.. it's jampacked with TONS of extras and content, and it's one of the best Nintendo franchises EVER. This is going to be one of the DS's best titles this year.. if not THE best.

I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one that picked up MK: SC for GBA and said "Whoa" to the controls. I'm also really hoping MK DS avoids repeating that.
Has the price of Nintendo's USB Wi-Fi Adapter been anounced?
I'm pretty sure they said $30 and that there would be a Mario Kart w/adapter bundle for $50 or $55.

Is the DS D-pad similar to the SNES or the GC D-pad (the GC D-pad being substantially smaller)?

Just compared against a SNES pad, and its only slightly smaller. On a side note, Ridge Racer drives fine with the d-pad, so I can only imagine that MK would control even better.

False. The thing with DS is it has the control scheme of the SNES Mario Kart, but controls like 64 (analog stick only). There was no powersliding-rocking to get a boost in either the SNES or GBA versions. I've played em all and love em all. Although, the SNES is by far the weakest in the series, which in no way makes it a bad game. It rocks. It's just that 64 and thereafter rock more. :)

So tomorrow the game is shipping. Is the wifi adapter shipping tomorrow as well? And what about the bundle(adapter and game not red system and game)?
One more week my friend...

For some reason GameInformer says the usb connecter will only be available online...

http://gameinformer.com/News/Story/200511/N05.1103.1515.28351.htm

I hope its not true as I have Gamerush credit :)
They're not the only ones reporting that unfortunately. :( The Nintendo store has great customer service, but their shipping seems to take forever. Looks like I can't play Mario Kart online at launch... well, maybe for a few minutes at a cafe or something, but I'm not going to hang out there all day just to play a videogame.

Does the USB connector act as a router ONLY for the DS? You could always get a wireless router that gives you wi-fi access for DS and your computer, sometimes for the same price.

I won't get to play this till the 28th. I don't own a DS so I went ahead and PO the red one that is bundled with mario cart
why do you need the USB connector anyways? doesn't the DS already have the wireless built-in?
its for people with internet but no wirless router or not living in a wifi hot spot
it'd actually be cheaper to buy a wireless router nowadays
yeah well pluggin one lil thing in a usb port is easier
yeah well pluggin one lil thing in a usb port is easier
there's not much more to a wireless router any more either. But the USB thing will be easier.

Are all wireless routers going to work?

And is there any word on communication between players over wifi? I know asking for voice communication is pushing it a bit, or will there be no way to chat while racing?

^ Taken from the Nintendo Wi-fi site.

I'm really bummed out that you can't buy the USB thingie in stores... it seems that most routers are around 60 or 70 bucks and you have to send in the mail in rebates to bring the price down to 30-40. I really loathe having to go through that process. All I want is to play my DS wirelessly... I could care less about hooking anything else up to it... well, until the Revolution comes out I guess.
I'm sure there's some configuration with it...........
You would be surprised how many people would rather spend $35 on this little USB plug-in rather then setting up an entire Wireless network.

Looks like Nintendo will be too.

Im going to buy the USB dongle. What if I go to a friends house who doesnt have a router? I'm not going to buy him a router too. Its just the insurance that no matter where you are staying, if there is a internet connection, you can get online with your DS.

The dongle is also for people who use WPA and do not wish to downgrade their security. As the dongle only lets your DS connect, it's secure (for now anyway).

Anyway back on topic, just beat all the missions and got the credits. Unfortunately you have to sit through them, there's no fast forward or skip that I could see (I pressed all the buttons too).

I really should just buckle down and play the tracks to unlock the hidden characters.
