Here is GBA Bowser's Castle 3 (props to anyone who pulls this off online)

Here is SNES Ghost Valley 2 (not as dramatic)

Wow. Those are impressive.
I don't think I'd ever be able to pull those off consistently in online races, and I haven't come across anyone who can yet. I just figured those courses were popular because of nostalgia.
So for all of you who nonchalantly blew through at least 50cc and 100cc, are you series veterans?
Last night was the first time I felt like I was really starting to get the hang of true racing in this game, and beat my first staff ghost. I beat a cup on 50cc and won every race by at least three seconds, sometimes more. I still only got an A ranking. The only cup I've gotten a star on is the very first one.
I also havent seen much talk about the battle mode here. I haven't even tried it yet. I don't want to totally dismiss what used to be my favorite part of the game though (last time I played was on the N64). Is anyone enjoying battle more that the other modes? Any recommendations that might get me hooked (i.e. go online right away, try this course...)?
I got the N64 version ten years ago as my first N64 game, and I've spent a ton of time with it, Double Dash, and Super Circuit. I guess I do count as a series veteran.
I've only had my DS since Christmas and I haven't gotten around to picking up Mario Kart DS just yet; I figure it's going to be on the shelves for a while, and I'll get it once I'm tired of the Wii version (which is going to take a very long time, if history holds).
As far as Battle, I liked the older free-for-all version better, but understand that it wouldn't work at all online. The team-based version is still a lot of fun, but a lot of it depends on whether or not you get paired up with decent partners. It loses its appeal when you realize you're the only one on your team with a score above zero.
My favorite battle course is actually the retro GBA one - save for four barriers and the outside walls it's completely open, so it's probably the one that requires the most skill. If you liked the N64 version, the skyscraper course is in there, and the Chomp Wheel and Block Plaza (those names might not be quite right) are spiritual successors to the donut course and the old block level. There isn't a successor to the tri-level course, unfortunately.
The new courses are a little meh compared to the older ones. Funky Stadium would be good if you had a full slate of 12, but it's too big for smaller matches. It's too bad that's the one everyone seems to vote for online.
Overall? I like Battle. It's different, but not in a bad way, and I've still had a blast playing it.
