Mario Kart Wii - Gen. Discussion & Info
Okay, I finally jumped online with a friend that lives about 50 miles away...

...and it was horrific. Two disconnects, constant invisible races, items that were not hitting the other person. Just atrocious. One race was finished by him lapping me, even though he never appeared on my map whatsoever. (And of course, my items weren't working.)

Is it like this for everyone else? I think of the games we played, only two seemed to be lag-free and working correctly.
I played for 3 hours straight today....... :D No problems!

I'll list my FC and start adding people once school is over.

Just one more week, damn it's going to be great as I can't even play GTA until I'm done with finals and a few essays.
No prob! If anything, there's always the weekend!
So someone recommend 4 easy tracks to break the staff record.. and who to use. I want Funky!
I used Peach on the standard bike. With the wheelie boost it wasn't too bad. I did the lugi circuit and the other circuits since I couldn't fall off the track.

No problems with online for me at all so far. It has been much smoother than Brawl and I have played over 50 races online.

The only issue I have is if my wife and I are both playing online, the quality of the graphics take a definite hit. It looks a little grainy and it is definitely not as smooth as when you are playing solo.

I played online last night with matches worldwide and never noticed any problems. Except for the fact that I am terrible, but other than that I was impressed with the online execution. I'm thinking I should have practiced a little offline first, but I can see myself getting sucked into this the way I did with Tetris DS.

Between this and Excite Truck (and my love for gimmicky attachments), I want another wheel already. I was just going to buy one, then I realized that there were a few games that are probably pretty cheap now that included wheels. Does anyone know which games these are, and what the included wheels are like? I figure if it's about the same price, I might as well get a crappy game with it too.

fuck yea!!!

Finally got all 32 Fast Staff unlocks, and got the unlockable!!!

Rainbow Road was a bitch, it took me an hour to get my time from 3:02 to 2:56, phew! The rest were easy with the bikes, except that damn Yoshi Falls ;)

Woot, Mii Alternate Outfit B!

Also got all stars in all of 50 cc, and just need to re-do one set in 100 cc for all stars in those too!

On my way to starring everything in 150 cc now! Already got 3 Retro GP's done!

Based on my little bit of play time, I still feel like karts don't stand a chance against bikes for time trials. I've only been able to time trial enough to unlock somewhere between 16 to 24 fast staff ghosts and even beat a few. (I wish I had more time to play--the release came at a bad time.)

If anybody wants to know the easy way to unlock staff ghosts to get unlockables, use the Bullet Bill bike set on automatic. It makes things so easy that you have to force yourself to go back to manual.

Once I'd gotten used to bikes from trialing, on a lark I went into the first two 150cc cups for the first time and immediately one starred both. Opponents never got within 3 seconds of me in any race, and it wasn't me as much as it was the bike. Yeah, I knew the tracks a bit from time trialing and 50cc, but outside of that the bike did the work. One thing that makes it easy is that, with a few exceptions, people running into you with heavier bikes or karts rarely harms you.

I need to look online to see what people are doing with karts, but I think if you get the hang of wheelies, wheelie cancels, and learn the tracks, a bike is tough to beat. Maybe too tough, IMO, seeing as how it's Mario KART.

So what does it take to get the unlocks, exactly?

I beat the ghost from Luigi Circuit, and that unlocked a new ghost with a time of 1:19:xx. That didn't seem to unlock anything, though, and I think there's a new kart that that's supposed to trigger.

What do you have to do to get the goodies? Do you have to beat the staff ghost? :whistle2:k

For what it's worth, I also didn't see any kind of message about "fast staff ghost." When does the message appear?

You start with a slow ghost, and to unlock the fast ghost you just have to beat some arbitrary time for the track. You don't know the times, you just have to go as fast as you can and hope that you see the "A fast staff ghost has appeared" or some such thing. If you'd like to know the times to unlock fast ghosts ahead of time, I'm sure they're out there. Try GameFAQs.

To get the unlockable karts/racers, all you have to do is unlock the fast staff ghost. Beating him, if you can do it, is just for fun.

That's weird - I managed to get four of the fast staff ghosts, and I unlocked Funky Kong, but I never saw that message appear once. :whistle2:k

And if anyone's wondering, the four courses I used were Luigi Circuit, Mushroom Gorge, N64 Mario Circuit, and GBA Bowser's Castle. :)
But seriously, why does she drive the LARGE karts and bikes?!
She uses the core of a dense star to keep her dress down. ;)

You have to exit the Time Trial mode, go all the way back to the license mode, and reload your game - then the unlocks will appear. Not sure why it works like that, but it does.

GameFAQ's has a sticky with all the times you need.

The message for Fast Staff Ghost appears on the second screen after you finish... the first tells you if you updated a record, the second tells you if you unlocked the ghost.

You get nothing for beating the expert ones, though.

Has anyone gotten a 61070 error code while trying to login? Nothing has changed on my wifi from yesterday the last time I played. Cant seem to connect. Not sure if its my connection

I've added everyone who PMed me. I'm assuming we'll get some kind of tournament going on sometime?

I'm going to try and finish 50cc soon, and then try to star whatever need to be starred to get unlockables (It's just the Wii tracks w/ stars that unlock something, right? Not the 4 retro cups?).

No, I starred all the 50cc cups and I remember unlocking something for at least one of those retro cups.

Nope - you can unlock karts and characters with the retro cups. Case in point: the 100CC Leaf Cup gives you
Dry Bones
.

I'm thinking of picking this up, but my CAG self wants to wait for a sale. So what's the verdict players? Worth the $50? Reviews are running about 8 out of 10 I see. Multi sounds like a blast from what I've read!

I meant the 50cc Retro Cups with stars in particular, and it looks like starring all four retro 50cc cups gives you
a kart
.

Waiting for a first party Nintendo game, especially a first party mario game, to drop in price is like waiting for a flood in the Sahara desert. It's possible, but probably isn't going to happen.

I'm actually really liking the wheel control right now, I dunno if it'll be fast enough for the higher CC games though.

You always get something for -

1) Getting 1st place in the cups you unlock
2) Getting stars in all 4 cups on a cc, whether it's retro or wii

When you unlock an expert ghost..does it tell you or does the time on the ghost change? I was playing on Mushroom Gorge and Toadette's ghost was like 2:16. Now it's 2:01. is this the expert ghost..?

Just got my copy today. I am very impressed how good it is. Just bet the first two cups on the new tracks. After not liking Mario Kart DS (well I thought it was ok but not great mainly I thought the tracks were meh), I am having a blast with this game. The tracks are very unique and fun. I guess I will play more after deadliest catch is over.

No Wifi for me yet though, school hates my router and it wont connect.

Has WFC been down for anyone today? I had a friend over and we were able to play Mario Kart online for an hour or so, but we eventually got kicked out and we haven't been able to reconnect (we couldn't get online in Brawl either).

I'm on fine now, but earlier it wasn't connecting for me.

Everytime I play online there are more ppl asking for Luigi Circuit than any other map. Whats up with that. Also I get owned way too much. I hate thinking I am good till I play online and end up sucking hard. /must practice

I just tried wifi for the first time and its not working. The 3 times I tried on smash nothing happened either. This game is about 5000 times better than double dash. Just kind of pissed those annoying hoola hoop dudes from sunshine open their mouths on some levels. Pretty cool being able to see my miis in the crowd sometimes.

it was down for me as well. I didnt try brawl but it seems like ninty's servers were down.

This has got to the best game on the wii so far. I am having a blast playing this. But there are some things that i hate, like only allowing 2 players online on one console and the missing 2 player gp. But other than that, this game is way better than brawl. ign and gamespot giving it 8/10 is unbelievable. this deserves a better grade than brawl. i can't believe that with 12 players racing that there is virtually no lag at all. I see myself playing this until the new nex gen systems come out (if im not too old to play them)
hmmmm I keep getting disconnected while playing online. :whistle2:k
I think Nintendo's servers are borked. I can't connect with Mario Kart or Brawl.

Yuck they put todette in the game?
I would have rather seen toadsworth or cranky kong.
Funky is awesome though.
I am going to have to humiliate you guys soon enough.:applause:
i don't understand this. What's that "invite" function i see on my mk channel. If i invite a CAG, do they still have to enter my fc?
If you have someone's system code you can send each other your friend code so you don't have to type it in.

Any tips on racing the 100cc or above? This game faces the same problem Mario Kart DS does for the GP mode. It seems like every fucking time I go into first someone has a god damn red/blue shell to knock me out and I can never win first because while I have skill, it means nothing to the cheapness of the CPU getting items.

I think the other items are in good frequency (and have no problems with most of them) but the blue shell comes out way too often, there should be like one of them max a race. This garbage where I get I fight to get into first and the CPU blue shells me every time is fucking annoying.
Any tips on racing the 100cc or above?
I had encountered the problem you describe when I did 150cc, but miraculously (I use that lightly) and despite the weapons bullshit, I was able to go gold in my first attempt on everything in 150cc. Why? It's not my skillz, trust me: I won two cups with a total of 41 points. What I did was race very conservatively, and it seemed to me that if you do this, the CPU wills you to victory.

You have one of two strategies as I see it. On the tracks you can dominate, get out in front from the start and gogogo. At 150cc with the exception of a few tracks, there were just too many POWs, lightnings, and blue shells for me to do this well. (At least at this time.) So on to strategy #2...

On the tracks you might have trouble with (pretty much everything for me when I did the 150cc cups), stay away from 1st, preferably somewhere in the middle to back of the pack to help your item selection, never miss an item box, and STAY ON THE TRACK. The CPU will, without question, give you a decent weapon per lap to keep places 1-4 tight, and it will also give you a decent item to make a move near the end. You'll almost always be able to get a top 3 finish if you play a race cool and don't take any risks. I don't know how many times I went from 8th to 2nd or 1st in an instant on the last half-lap. It's important that you don't miss those item boxes and don't fall off the track (a tall order on Rainbow Road but it can be done with a little time trialing to learn the layout).

I realize the second is a totally retarded strategy and is completely antithetical to karting well and winning, but hey, items are the name of the game now, and if you play to that, you'll go gold. They won't be 60 point, 3-star golds, but they unlock shit and that's the point, right? Like I said, I managed to pull it off for every single cup on my first time in 150cc, and I was winning gold with as few as 41 points. At first I thought I was getting lucky, but after this strategy worked for 8 straight cups I got to wondering if maybe the CPU had more to do with it than luck.

EDIT: Note that I had a few restarted first races so I could start with 15 points. Not being entirely honest when I say each cup was "one time." But it never took me more than one restart to lock up 15 points for the first race in a cup.

I'm no mario kart master, but that seems like a good strategy. It's really hard to keep first in those races because the people behind you are always going to get the better items, so it's probably best to stay behind and get in 1st as late as possible.

I was usually trying to score first and then getting my ass handed to me. This seems more plausable.

If you don't get frustrated easily, you can go out front and hope that they don't lob any blue shells at you. Who knows, it may happen. And then if you do get smacked with a blue shell and you drop back to 10th, you adopt the strategy I've suggested provided that the blue shell incident didn't get you so angry you get put off your game.

There's just a few problems with that hybrid strategy. First, if you're not putting enough time between yourself and the field, if/when you get smacked by a blue shell near the finish on the last lap, not only will you be passed, it seems like you'll be passed by at least 4 karts, which will put you out of the money. That's no good. Second, I've noticed that if I'm leading from the start and I get blue smacked, the field that was behind me is not as tight as it would be if I started the race from the middle of the pack. A field that is more spread out makes it tougher to make those crazy 10th to 1st moves on a last-second star.

That business about the field is anecdotal and not to be trusted, but it feels like the CPU makes all the CPU racers more competitive if the 1P is running a shittier race. If you can get way out in front and stay there, who cares what the pack looks like, right? But if you aren't able to suck up 1 or 2 blue shells from 1st, then it's to your advantage to have a tighter field, and thus hanging back from the start might be a better idea.
So why haven't we had any 12 CAG matches? :(
seems like every time i log in there are only 4 or 5 people on and everyone is on a random vs. match. I have never seen anyone start a room on mario kart.
