Mario Kart Wii - Gen. Discussion & Info

Well, the bad news is I cannot host Mario Kart Monday this week (sorry I'm getting to you all late), because I'm going to a funeral out of town tomorrow and won't get back until Tuesday evening. I won't have any game console with me (only handhelds). Sorry about that.
 
I added Jello00. As usual, I will be on at about 7:30pm PST and you will have all gone off to your little EST beds. I really want a bunch of us to go around regional races as an army of the same Mii. I need to be more industrious about organizing something like that. Think about how cool it would be if you were online racing randomly and suddenly got put in a race with six or seven of the same Mii.

It's summer vacation! I'll be up at 10:30 PM EST.
 
I finally unlocked all the characters and karts/bikes. Also got the one star by my name as well. Will probably work to make that two stars...but I don't think I'm crazy enough to try for three.

Will certainly be playing more online with you guys as soon as I move into my new apartment (in a week or so).

My hat is off to you. I am so frustrated with the blue shells and the cheap rubber banding AI in this game I am teetering on the edge of selling my Wii.

Interesting. Mario Kart is actually the reason why I haven't sold my Wii. I was bored of the Wii and hugely disappointed that the system was basically a vehicle to play Wii Sports Tennis. I tried a few tracks of Mario Kart and had written it off due to the absolutely insane flood of items being thrown at me in every race. However, my wife really wanted it, so I bought it. After two days of giving it another try, I am a convert. This is the second best Mario Kart game (after the SNES game).

However, I don't hate myself enough to try for 1 star in every cup.

Apparently I do.

It annoys me to absolutely no end that I can race online and race well, finishing in the top 3 almost all races, only to turn around and attempt for cup stars only to be frustrated endlessly with cheap rubber-banded AI and a deluge of blue shells, thunder bolts and pow blocks. I also find it rather irksome that Nintendo simply won't divulge the requirements to earn a star either. Racing for its own sake is an absolute blast but trying to unlock content ruins the game.
 
Don't sweat it TMK. IRL takes precedence of course.

If somebody is going to start a room at 9/9:30PM I might be there but 10PM is definitely too late for me. No big whoop either way. I'm not sure if Doomed is on my FL either...

As for starring the cups I've managed to at least 1 star all of the 100ccs but I guess the 150s is where it really gets insane. I might try to unlock the fast staff ghost for every course.

If you've ever played TMK on Mario Kart Mondays/Saturdays you're probably on my FL. Everyone I've seen online I added to my FL.
I'll also try to be online at 9 or 9:30, and if anybody shows up I'll play a game.

I was on for 2 of them and added everyone who wasn't already on my list (I think) so yeah we are probably good there.
 
Well I just stopped in to say I managed to get those stars. Looks like all I had to do was stop being a little bitch and start using the flame runner. It's almost pathetic how bad the other bikes are in comparison to it.
 
Are we starting? I didn't quite understand what time we're supposed to meet.

jello00, you told me you added me, so I registered you the very next day. But you didn't show up on my list until just recently.

Everyone else I've registered has shown up right away.
 
weird. well there are a few people that I've registered and they said that they registered me but have yet to show up. I'll just stay connected and see if it sorts itself out.

Holy crap you guys are destroying me. We should stalk regional matches after this so other people can join in at will.

Damn this mirror mode. Doomed was very nice to wait up for me a few times though.
 
THE reason I left was because I have to take a massive shit very shortly.

As for "waiting" for mephitical, during the races, I was trying as hard as I could. It was just suckage. I've been playing too much DDR/Zack and Wiki. I'm gonna finish Mirror mode and unlocking the rest of the vehicles and shelf this for good (besides MK Mondays)
 
As if I wasn't sucking enough, I chose the wrong vehicle. I'm gonna get drunk and then blame my driving on that.

I'm going to harrass regional races now. Anyone who added me can follow I guess. Thanks for the races!
 
So the problem was Andy? j/k But everything worked fine for me when Jeffrie hosted.

Nice games guys. I especially liked when mephitical sacrificed his place so he could try to hit me with a star at the end of Bowser's Castle. Notice I said try :lol:

Hey, I hit you at least. I was so far behind there was no way in hell I was going to get anything but last, so my only goal was to mess someone else up. Then my dad's voice echoed in my head "You don't build yourself up by tearing others down." My dad was so wrong. I am totally built up.
 
Well I managed to 1 or 2 star all of the retro 150cc grand prixs yesterday. I had 3 left to star and got them all on the first shot. I can only say to switch to a gamecube controller and you'll find you do much better.

I'm hoping I'll be able to star all of the new 150cc grand prixs using a controller now. I'd previously raced them with the Wii Wheel and scored from A to C.

Do you have to star the Mirror mode cups as well to get the star by your dude online?

Flame Runner eh? With which character? (If it matters) I've been using Funky and either the Standard Bike or the Spear Bike (I started using the Spear Bike on some time trials and one grand prix yesterday and like it so far.)

Flame runner + Funky is a good balance of speed and other things... but it's on the riskier side. If someone hits you with an item you go back to being slow as fuck. Rosalina + Flame Runner has better acceleration and worse speed. Spear+Funky Kong is the vehicle of choice on all but two time trial world records. It's the fastest, and in Time Trial, you don't have to worry about a barrage of items.

I'm pretty sure you have to one star all the mirror cups to get the star online. I've just been using my Mii (fattened up) with the Flame Runner. As far as I can tell there's no difference between characters of a single weight class except for the paint job of the bike.

i was glad to see that worked out. i was a little confused by the host menu. but i think i've figured it out. i thought we had a pretty good group. i would have liked to have gotten a few more wins though.

hopefully people will still be into it as time goes on. i know i've been playing a lot less games since the weather has gotten better here in seattle.
 
I'm moving up from the 100CC to 150CC races -- haven't "starred" on any cups yet, but have gotten gold trophys on all the 50CC and 100CC cups. I'm sorry if this has been asked before -- but is there a concensus on the best character/vehicle combination to use for the 150CC races? Should I work on the time trials first? Or should I work on "starring" on the 50CC or 100CC cups?

hey. i used a medium character and the mach bike. but that's just me.

for the route to completion. i got 1st place on all cups. then beat all "normal staff ghost" times. then starred everything on the cups. i think it's far to hard to star the cups if you don't know the tracks well enough. and time trials are great for that.

i still haven't beaten all of the expert staff ghost times. but i'd like to at some point.

Wrong. Characters give stat boosts to certain stats for whatever vehicle they're on. Which is why Funky Kong on the Flame Runner is faster than Rosalina on the Flame Runner.

Did a quick search but didn't see an answer, apologies if it's been covered though.

Is there anyway to share time trial scores between accounts, either through WFC or just local Miis? No ghosts, just times (or perhaps being able to play against multiple ghosts at once, but I figure that's more of a stretch)
 
Two comments:

HOLY fuck there are a lot of items in this game. I lost count of the times I have been nearly simultaneously POW'd, shelled, and lightning bolt'd. I don't know how the GCN or NDS versions were, but this is insane compared to SNES and N64. I am starting to think that the fast acceleration vehicles are the way to go since I get hit with stuff constantly.

I have seen many times where there are 11 average players and then one dude with like 7000+ rating and the star icon just mopping up race after race farming 30-50 points each race. I would think the game would try to match up similar ratings. Tonight I had several races where I was in 2nd or 3rd place and the race ended due to the uber rank finishing 30 seconds before me. Crazy.

i know that you can't race against more then one ghost. as for time trial scores between accounts. you can always see all of your friends times on the mario kart channel. click rankings, then time trial rankings, then that crown with the 10 on the bottom right.

but it's not too easy to jump back and forth between the rankings area and the actual time trials area. so, if i'm trying to beat someone's time, i just write down their score, or ask them to send me a ghost.

i don't think the game goes to any effort to match people up rankings wise. i wish it did. i'm at about 8000, and i'd prefer to race against higher ranked players. it would be more fun and it would be easier to increase my ranking. usually i just hang out in a room and wait for better players to come. i must admit though, i'm thankful for the 30 second thing. just so i don't have to wait too long. but that would suck to not get to finish.

if you can get a lead right away, often times you can complete the whole race without having to deal with any weapons at all. and by the end, since no one is slowing you down, you'll have a pretty big lead.

I have noticed that. While everyone is slamming each other with items, battling in 4th/5th place, the leader or two is just skating around unhampered.

Sure thing. My times aren't the best but they unlocked all expert ghosts.
