Marvel Puzzle Quest Discussion Thread

EDIT: Oh yeah. You guys should watch Wheel of Fortune on Wednesday. I'll be the tall guy in the blue position. Wonder if anyone else on CAG has ever appeared on the show.
Nerd Alert: According to my DVR, you are in season 32, episode 123 - which my brain interpreted as a palindrome.

Haven't heard of any other WOF contestants, though JimmieMac from the forums was on a season of Hell's Kitchen.

I have a degree in accounting, with minors in math and finance. Numbers might be an important part of my life. Nice catch!!

You know what's also palindromic? $1,001,001

out of 6 Prodigal Sun tokens -

Red DAMoonstone

Blue Hood

Purple Fury

Blue MnMag

Yellow Thorina

Red MnMag

Was hoping for an IF too. Holding at 43rd  - hoping for two covers.

I stare at numbers all day, and have a habit for looking for 'human' patterns, as they stand out to non-numbers people and raise questions.

Then again, I'm always looking for patterns in my odometer, so maybe I just have a problem.

Dang, I thought I had a good token pull this morning, getting 4 3*s out of 8 heroics (only one I could use, but hey), but two 4*s in one batch is pretty sweet. They're even for the better characters!

Damn, two 4*s?!

The only 4* I ever get from tokens is IW.

Speaking of 4* though I jumped in to the Hood PvP last night with 15 minutes remaining and snagged the #1 spot out of 20 hahah. I now have a 5/5/3 Sentry as well as my first cover for Starlord!

And yes Ltrain!! I have had that on my calendar since you told us hahah Unfortunately I have class Wednesday nights and so I have family in IN recording it for me and when i go visit them in a couple weeks I will watch it!

When you guys talk about his performance you should put it in spoilers because I want to be surprised as I watch it!

The latest D3 Video FAQ is up:

   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyy71stDjX4

tl;dr:  To their knowledge, all game issues are solved by DP DQ.

Hm.

They mention that people who do not need the 3*s from DPDQ should be bringing in on average 375 HP per two weeks. The way it is worded it seems he is implying that we would be selling those extra 3* covers, but as all of us vets know, we no longer get HP for selling our covers. I am sure he means on average due to the HP rewards being in the Taco Tokens and so on average if you are playing each day you should be bringing in that much, but still he worded it oddly especially seeing as we did use to get that HP... which I am STILL sour about haha

Overall they are right though, DPDQ does really solve a bunch of problems which is great.

As an artist I always cringe when I hear other artists talk who clearly aren't comfortable doing so. I have a bunch of peers that are the same way, amazing at what they do but when you have them start to talk about it they clearly clam up, which was the case here. Not to mention when they talk about their teams he clearly barely plays the game it would seem judging by not only his team but how and why he expressed his reasoning for that team hah.

Yeah, aside from the slim chance of winning some hp in the taco lottery, the DQ clearly doesn't solve the problem of roster spots rising to ridiculous prices as people collect the biweekly character releases.

For the veteran who needs 1350hp to add a slot, a tiny chance at an occasionall 250/1000 doesn't mean much.

The obvious solution is to cap the roster slot price, but every single Q&A has failed to acknowledge that as a possibility.

I am a vet but only need 600 per slot at the moment still ; P

And that is with 2 new stupid 2*s and 3 new stupid 1*s taking up space in my roster

Plus then every single 3* available and all 4*s except Thor and Elektra

Why did you keep 3? I only have an Iron Man, and he cleans up the first daily node with ease.
Because I did not think of that. hahah

At first I only had a super basic IM and so he couldnt handle it on his own so I pulled in Venom and Juggernaut. I gave Venom some ISO but you are right, I should just get Iron Man to max and then I can get rid of the other two whenever I need a new slot opened up.

My Iron Man at the moment still sucks. Since deciding to keep them for DPDQ, I have since gotten TEN Blue Iron Man covers and very few of any other color for him haha

I think it's because it's pretty much how you monetize the 'in-between' players. Early in the play cycle, you get tricked into gambling on tokens. Late in the play cycle, you either regularly drop cash into the game to stay on top (the folks with character multiples, maxed covers the instant the character can be earned, etc.), or you change your play style to match your HP income.

In the middle, you have learned that token draws are lousy. You may still pull the lever, but you recognize the gamble. You keep a bunch of low-covered 3*s, because you never know when they are going to be required. You have to prioritize HP between buying covers, buying roster slots, and shields. If the cost of roster slots go up, eventually you cannot earn enough to juggle everything. So the developers gamble you'll occasionally pony up, you quit, or opt to play a little more casually.

I have put money into the game, but not in a long time. I can keep up with the roster slots with what I have/earn, and rarely use shields (and when I do, my nest egg shrinks fast).

But... what do I know? This is the same company that claims people buy 40 pack tokens because it's 'fun', so maybe I have the economics all wrong, and they fired the guy who knows how to change roster prices.

For anyone interested, this is the DP daily rewards for the week:

Covers for this week will be Black Widow (Green), Daken (Purple), Doctor Doom (Black), Loki (Black) and Squirrel Girl (Yellow)

They've given Loki, bw, and daken so far, so it looks like doom and sg for the Next two days.

I tried twice for the Daken Purple but failed both times - even wasted the DP whales whales whales.

IF model and animations are pretty cool.

Yeah I actually had the hardest time on that node than I have any of the other DPDQ ones. Ended up squeezing by with Patch, Blade and Falcon.

I caved and bought another PvE token right before the end of the event since I have barely played that event and so there was no way I was getting an IF... I got an Elektra. Which technically sucks because she might as well be another IW cover, but at least now the only characters I am missing are 4hor and now IF. Luckily this event has more rewards I couldn't care less about and so I will be starting this event this morning sometime probably and just going for the progression reward.

Upcoming patch notes:

"Hello everyone,

It's time for us to take a peek at what's planned for the next MPQ update.

R72 Patch Notes Preview:
(As always, anything listed below is subject to change before release.)

A telepath. A shapeshifter. This month is getting interesting…

Team-Up Improvements

  • - You can now send up to five Team-Ups to your Alliance members at a time (up from three).
    - You can continue to play with characters even if you’ve sent them away as Team-Ups.
    - When you earn a Team-Up, or a friend sends you one, its power is raised to the average level of your four best characters.
    - The max level of a Team-Up is limited to the max level that character could have if they were in your roster.
    - If the average level of your four best characters is lower than the Team-Up’s original level, you’ll get the Team-Up at its original level.
    - When you enter a mission, any empty Team-Up/Boost slots are filled with random available Team-Ups from your inventory.
    - Starting Team-Ups updated for new players.
UI, Tweaks & Bug Fixes

  • - You can check how much cooldown time is left on your Shields while you’re shielded. Select the timer on your current Shield to do so.
    - Mission rewards in Versus matches have been updated. The average Iso-8 earned per mission is unchanged, but there’s now a 250 Iso-8 reward, and the odds of character covers are reduced.
    - Squashed some bugs that kept the display of "Time Left" in Events from showing up.
    - The initial game install file is now a bit smaller.
    - Re-added music missing from the previous patch.
    - Roster Slot prices through slot 25 have been lowered and the first few weeks of Daily Rewards have been re-tuned.
    - Covers in your Rewards cache now expire in 14 days (extended from 7 days)."

DQ for Squirrel Girl - not even going to bother. doing the PVE event now - IF is the last prize. As for the other PVP stuff - will just get to 300 for a token.

Hmmm

The team-up changes are both awesome and shitty. That means now all the random crappy team-ups I get will all be boosted to 166, but at the same time means we cannot score crazy overpowered Team-Ups from PvE events. The fact that we can use our characters even after sending them to teammates is great actually because people can now send actual usable characters. Plus randomly filling the open slots for each match is actually pretty solid. I always think maybe I should throw one in there just in case, but now the game will do it for me. Overall, though we lose are super powered team ups, these changes are definitely for the better.

In terms of Roster slots it seems they are at least addressing it for new players with the lowered cost for the first 25 and then extending the decay rate of un-recruited covers.

Not bad.

A telepath and a shapeshifter... who are we looking at upcoming? I do not even know who is rumored to be coming. 4-Star Phoenix would be pretty awesome.

Too late now, but you would have had better luck getting IF from the current PvE token instead of the previous.

They worded that really oddly, but explained later in the thread. If you earn a high level Team-Up (from scaled PvE, for example), you get to keep it. This only affects things like getting a team up from a level 3 Storm. Instead, you will get a Team-Up level averaged across your best characters, instead of something you click the trash can.

I like the automatic random addition if you have the space. That's the only reason I don't use them more often - too many touches to activate something I might not even use. Well, that and the six or so 395 Team Ups I have RPG potionitis about (gotta save them for the REALLY hard battles, but this one might not be as hard as a future one).

I added roster slots to have 1* scrubs to send out on patrol. Now that there isn't any patrol time, I can probably free up those slots for newer characters. Hmm.

Random game thoughts - I like some of the new covers for women of Marvel month (Star-Lord, 4* Thor, and Invisible Woman are the ones that come to mind.)

I was using Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Falcon for some of the lower levels in the new Deadpool even, great team.

I accidentally joined the new event before it even started, but at least I don't need any black punishers, so my only real goal is the Iron Fist.

The team up update sounds like a few good changes, and it will be nice to be able to send out decent people to others without having to figure out who you need for the events.

Telepath and shapeshifter - Emma Frost?

Speaking of Luke Cage I found yet another reason to absolutely love Blade. Thirst had filled up every single red with a strike tile and so when Luke kept trying to make his protect tile, nothing happened! I made him shoot blanks! : P

And yeah I totally forgot to mention the new covers. I actually really like the choices for pretty much all of them and they should just stay this way!

And thanks for clearing that up Koju, I haven't actually been to the actual MPQ forums in a few months so I rely on you guys for all the details : P

I was trying Falcon, Daken, and IF.

My Cage is too low.
Mine is 3/2/4, and I dumped the iso in to soft cap him at 114. Between the free defense tile, attack tile, and Falcon's inspiration buffing them, I could make it through without taking too much damage. Also, the yellow earned loads up for Cage's uppercut. If I had the Iron Fist purple to stock up on black, it would be even better.

I tried twice for the Daken Purple but failed both times - even wasted the DP whales whales whales.

Who gave you guys the most trouble in that node? I ran with Steve, Pun, and Falcon, just like I do every day, and it was like a hot knife through butter. Pun's strike and attack tiles stick around for each wave, so do Falcon and Steve's defense tiles. Falcon destroys countdowns and strikers, and once you get Steve's red rolling, they can't stop you.

It was the third wave, where my guys are somewhat battered and the fresh wave comes in with that ninja and gorgon. Couldnt clear the countdown tile in time and it does around 2k dmg to each.

There was no single thing that was hard, it was just a massive streak of terrible luck for me. It was one of those times where no matter what I did, the enemy tiles were placed in tiny corners, they got 5-match cascades multiple times in a row and just terrible terrible luck. The first time I literally had my main team, Thor, DP and BP almost completely wiped out after the first wave. That shit happened two times in a row. Then I swapped back to Patch Blade and Falcon and it was much smoother.

Telepath and shapeshifter - Emma Frost?
Those are actually two characters being teased.

My DDQ final survival node team is regularly Blade, Daken and Falcon. Blade is built for this mode - all of his powers carry over between rounds in some way. Falcon's job is the usual, and Daken is there to accelerate strike tiles and take hits (which means you can skip using purple for protect tiles most of the time). Today's run, I was doing like 3k a turn just in attack tile damage by the end, never mind 1k+ match damage.

Yeah the amount of damage from just matching alone is amazing after a round or two with Blade. I prefer Patch over Daken because then you get a more Rainbow team and with Patch if you have green or red stored up at all it is basically instant kills later in the game with all the strike tiles.

When you say two are you implying what I said with Phoenix before as well?

You and gravel rolled both qualifications into 1 person on your guesses, and Koju was clarifying that there will be a shapeshifting character AND a telepathic character coming out soon. Not to say either of your guesses would be wrong, since they can technically qualify for both.

Telepaths - Professor X has to be a 4 star if Nick Fury is, and they don't need any more of those any time soon. Jean Grey as a 2*, and Phoenix as a 3* would be plausible (or 3*, 4* alternatively), but that makes too much sense, so that won't happen. With those 2 out of the way, my next thought was Emma Frost.

Shapeshifter - My first thought was Reed Richards, to add to the F4 family, since his hyper-elasticity is "technically" shapeshifting.

I know we all have that mindset that strongest characters have to be 4*s but if you go back to their last video they talk about how each character they design in mind that it could exist at any star level regardless of power in comics.

I wasn't thinking Phoenix as the Shapeshifter, I was just thinking she was pure telepath. Because technically if you get into it she in some way shape or form can do absolutely anything. She is one of those characters in the comics that if you track all that she can do it is absurd. Either way, I want more X-Men is all. Even more Brotherhood would be cool to fill with Mystique. Blob, Quicksilver, Sabretooth, Avalanche, Pyro...

I forgot how low the progression rewards were for the Deadpool event.  I was also wondering if they would do something for the upcoming Netflix Daredevil series, but it seems like the major players (DD, Elektra, Bullseye) are already covered.  Maybe Kingpin?

They arent low for me... I am getting like 100-200 points per match across the board... I am at like 3,800 : /

I texted my mom last night since I am going to visit them in 2 weeks and I do not have DVR and she was like... you need me to record Wheel of Fortune? Haha

I hope you arent like the idiot that was on last night that thought "Sneeky" was one of the Seven Dwarfs hahah

No matter what, you can't do worse than this guy last month:

While that was a horrible answer, Terra was one of 3 of the other contestants that were really nice and super fun to hang out with for a day. One of the others? Jarod (the guy that beat her). The final one is the red contestant on Friday. (That's not to say the other people weren't fun to hang out with... just spent the most time talking to those 3)

Oh yeah... Broly... I'll post the YouTube video tomorrow morning when I get to work. It's usually posted sometime in the AM by user Wheel of Fortune HD 2.

I watched last night.

Thought for sure you had a Bankrupt magnet on your side of the wheel in the beginning.

I haven't watched Wheel in a long time. Didn't realize the metagame had changed - I vaguely remember people being super reluctant to buy vowels unless stumped, but now it seems to be the strategy to buy them as soon as possible in hopes of flipping the solution switch in your head.

In any case, nice job!

DPDQ rewards for the next 5 days:

"Welcome to week four of Deadpool's Daily Quests! Main post will be updated each day with the enemies we'll be facing and the cover reward.

Covers for this week will be Beast (Blue), Psylocke (Red), Mystique (Purple), Falcon (Yellow) and Hulk (Green)"

Purple Mystique was today.  I can use the red Psylocke, purple Mystique and blue Beast, so it won't be a bad 5 days for me.

Do they tell you to clap when everyone spins the wheel?

Did you get to go on the cruise yet?  How many people get to go or went?

I thought you were screwed in the beginning like Koju said, and you were so close to that $1 million once.  Those last two puzzles you solved with 2-3 letters were very impressive.  I had no idea on the last one either.

Congratulations!

Awesome, and now this YouTube page will consume my time at work hahah oh man.

And so how does that work? Are the entire week's episodes recorded all at once in one day?

That's exactly how they do it. As for the Youtube page, of course, the day I'm on... whoever's running it doesn't want to upload the damn thing.

That is interesting. As a viewer you would never think it is all clumped into one day; makes total sense though especially since the set each week is a different one.

And yeah I have some mindless work on my agenda for today and I keep refreshing that page to see your video up so I can start that mindless work and watch you hahah

That shift happened somewhere around 8-10 years ago, if I recall. I remember thinking that way, wondering why people wanted to spend money to get a letter. But the price of vowels has never gone up in the history of the show, so they're cheaper than ever now. 99% of words in the English language contain a vowel, so there's almost a guarantee there are some up there. There are only 5 of them, so even looking at a completely empty board, there's a nearly 20% chance that one of them is in the puzzle. If played correctly in context, your odds are even higher, and that letter may help you figure out some of the other words. Plus, even if you miss one, you're out $250 and didn't land on a bankrupt, so you might get another shot.

They don't tell you to, but it's kind of an unwritten rule. It shows enthusiasm, which is what they are looking for.

The cruise can be any time from July 2015 to August 2016. Tentatively, we're looking at January so we can watch Star Wars aboard the ship!

And after watching it back when everyone left, remembering my thought process while I spinned, and where I was on the puzzles, I calculated that if I would've hit one less bankrupt, I would've won at least $3,000 more. Ah well. The Wheel is a fickle mistress. Thanks for watching!
