I got my copy for ps2 at Gamecrazy for $17.99 about 4 years ago. The store employee was as shocked as I was that it was on the shelf. It is mint and complete with instructions. I would need a very good reason to get rid of it, like urgent need of money.

I would suggest to try a Gamecrazy, a lot of times people just bring in boxes of games with systems to get the newest best thing without knowing what they are trading in.

I got mine from a friend when I bought his ps2 and 5 games for 100 bucks about a year ago. I didn't know it was even worth anything until a couple months ago.
Bought my copy the day it released on PS2 for $40. The guys at my local gamestop know I have it and try to get me to trade it in quite frequently.
I got it day one too. Actually my brother bought it and didn't ever play it so I kinda wound up with it.

Lol, you know those fools at your Gamestop wouldn't put that on the shelf if you traded it in. One of them would end up with it. They'd probably have a knife fight out back for the right to take it.

Man, I need to trade this in and stick around then.
Sounds like a party :/

Crazy prices.

I'm keeping my DC copy forever. It really is a GREAT game. Probably my favorite 2d fighter ever.

I also had a disc-only Xbox version I got for $6, but I traded it on goozex.

Re: why the DC version is better, it's basically b/c it's the closest port of the arcade version. I'm not as knowledgeable of all the technical lingo, but I recall when the game released, all the 2-D fighting junkies talked about how this would be one of the truest translations from the arcades because the DC graphics engine is essentially similar to what Capcom used to bring the game to arcades.

It also explains why the DC got SO many games from Capcom when other publishers had already jumped ship. If you look at the list, it's pretty impressive; some include Power Stone 1 and 2, Project Justice, Tech Romancer, Canon Spike, and Third Strike. You'll see a few of these still have never come out on any of the other consoles (and others *finally* came out only recently). Capcom's ability to port to DC was fairly inexpensive.

So, in other words, the DC version is the truest translation.

the aracde was on Sega's NAOMI board which the dreamcast is based off of. this is why it's the best version of the game. Heh, reminds me back when a crappy but rare game called dragon ball gt for ps1 came out and never thought i'd see the day that game would sell for $300 on ebay.

I remember importing this for DC. It's the only game i've ever imported, probably because I don't know Japanese and there wasn't much text in it...:)

Funny.. my brother trade his Racket and Clank (first one for the PS2) for this game.

And really I wonder about this price too.. it's a lot. I know it's a good game, but $80.. crazy!

I remember seeing this at Gamecrazy for $35.00 ish three years ago.. (didn't realize how long ago.. I swear it was last year) and I thought it was ridiculous then.
the aracde was on Sega's NAOMI board which the dreamcast is based off of.
True, but NAOMI games port quite well to the PS2. Load times are about the only drawback.

The PS2 is better than the xbox one, imo. DC has the best one though. I dont get any slowdown on my PS2 version, but then again it might have something to do with the fact the game is saved on my HDD.

The reason why this game sells for $80-$100 on ebay is not just because its rare but because it is one of the best 2D fighters ever made. It's the best fighter of any of that series (X-men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes, MvC1, etc.)

I wouldn't bite unless you have an arcade stick to play this game to the full potential. romeogbs19 said it best, that DC version is the best and that's the platform they use at Evo tournaments. Not sure about posting rules but if you want to be the ultimate cheapass theres always nullDC.

I think the primary reason is because the Marvel license changed hands not too long after it was released. No more manufacturing runs and red tape up the ass for any chance of re-releases. Kinda like what Goldeneye is going through, where multiple companies own a portion of the game's content.

The dc version is the only competitively playable version. ps2/xbox changed some in game things that are critical to high level play.

Still worth a grip on any console!

The PS2 and XBOX versions are not that bad. It's not like The Orange Box on PS3 port.
Sorry, not meaning to 'threadcrap', but I just still can't see the whole reason behind the demand for this game. It's just 'another fighting game' to me. Plus, why anyone would willingly give Gamestop that much money for something is beyond me, especially considering how high of a profit margin they have on it($15 trade value last I heard).
And some people don't get why others would pay $350-$600 for a 360 or PS3 when they could buy a PS2 for $130. After all, to them, they're just 'another videogame machine.' If you don't like Capcom fighters, it ain't worth it (obviously)... but there are enough people who do like it to command that kind of money for a used last-gen game.

I hear that MAME is close to emulation the Naomi boards. If that happens and people start down loading it, would that make demand go down?

Reading this thread makes me want to break out the DC and play it on the VGA adapter....How sweet it is... Too bad they used lo-res sprites on this game. What keeps me from playing it is the bulky controller. I need to get a PS2 to DC converter so I can use my 15th Anniversary joystik. I almost picked this up in store with 25% PS2 coupon but it came coverless...no deal for me.

I am not a big fan of fighting games, but this game is an exception. Must have game. This price is a little to much for me to buy right now, but if you got the money, it is well worth it.
wish i still had my dreamcast version
The Dreamcast version is superior.

I saw the xbox version at gamestop a couple years ago and snagged it for like 40 bucks... just wish they'd fix the BC on it for 360.. it runs like complete shit on 360.. all kinds of weird artifacts/deformities and overlapping pop up all the time.

Yeah, it runs pretty poorly on the 360. Ruins the experience.

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm leaving now to pick up an XBox copy I spotted on Craigslist...is it worth a 15 minute drive and $5?? My search for a moderately priced Dreamcast version will continue, but hopefully this is at least playable.

Wow, $5??? Yes! The game is playable, but the graphical glitches are awful. At the very least, you'll get some time in with the game and will be able to sell it for like $70 on eBay.

Lets see... 8 bucks for the game and some gas, and you're worried about this one? If you don't like it, ebay is calling your name.

Jus' my two cents but I sold a mint/complete copy that I had found for $5 at the CC clearance in 2004 for $96 shipped on eBay last year. I still have my DC version for the times when I feel like some "Mahvel Baybee!"
I really want this game. Here's hoping it gets a re-release on PSN and Live.
Would be nice, but as others have said, probably never going to happen, considering the licensing issues.

i hope it gets re-released also so i can play people online. for the people who have dreamcasts, just burn the damn thing. Custom soundtracks add more flavor to it since the original jazz is corny as hell.

Just to clear up some things about the different versions from someone with firsthand experience:

1. DC version is indeed the closest to the arcade because the arcade was basically running on DC hardware. If you need it to be arcade perfect, DC is the only way.

2. Xbox and PS2 versions are both excellent ports but they do have differences from the arcade/DC. However, if you are not a fighting game nerd that cares about "hit boxes" and split-second timing you will probably never know the difference.

3. As someone mentioned, the PS2 version looks a tiny bit more pixelated and is missing a few frames of animation. Again, unless you're a purist who cares.

4. The Xbox version looks better and plays more smoothly but there are a few high-level combos that don't connect quite right with certain characters. Again, only high-level players would care. BTW, the reason the Xbox version gets such a bad score on IGN and other sites is that everyone was expecting online LIVE play and when the game showed up without it people were pissed off and docked the game for it punitively. Bad reviewing ethics, IMO but that's the reason.

5. BC: If you don't want to drag your DC, PS2, or Xbox out to play these games then the PS2 version is the one to get because the PS3 (at least the BC capable ones) will play this game. The Xbox version is ostensibly supported on the 360 but it is unplayable. Slowdown and graphical glitches galore. Don't bother. This is why I think the price and rarity for the PS2 build is only going to increase over time. As people move further into this generation and their old systems break or are sold/thrown out, the PS2 version may be the only one that plays on current hardware.

Haha, thanks for putting things into perspective...I tend to be lazy at times. Just picked it up, disc, manual, and insert are in good shape, case has seen better days, I'll probably switch it if I end up selling. I told the guy I work part time at a Youth Center and that we're always looking for used games (which is true) and picked a couple others off his list for $5 each just to make sure he didn't get suspicious and check the going rate on eBay. Well, out of the goodness of his heart he dropped his rate to $3 per game. So the kids will have Hitman: Contracts and Star Wars: Battlefront II to play on Monday afternoon and I'll selfishly keep MvC2 for myself since they treat game discs as if they were frisbees and drink coasters.

So not only did you get him for his MvC2, you suckered him into to dropping the price to $3?????

LUCKY!!!!!

I dont particularly like your use of an appeal to pity though. I know it wasn't entirely intentional but I kinda feel bad for the guy. But then again he shoulda checked the value before he just pawned it.

What's with all this review and comparison? Where am I? IGN.com?

Just tell me where to get some copies for $10-$15 bucks!

For the record, he posted a list of games for sale for $5 each which included MvC2. In my initial response to his ad, I briefly mentioned my part time job and that I'm always on the look out for deals on games. He quoted me a price via email on what I wanted and I showed up with that amount in hand. When I got out of my car he told me that he has "way too many games" that aren't being used, told me he has several different lists on the net of games for sale and dropped the price hoping to do business in the future, which I probably will since paying retail price (or Gamestop used) for a game that could be ruined in a short time is pointless. He had items he wanted to get rid off, set a price, and I paid it. At no point did I "sucker" him into doing anything...there was no talk of starving kids in wheelchairs who are only happy playing old XBox games on which a $2 price reduction would make all the difference. He seemed perfectly happy with the $$ I handed him as he drove off to meet the other 4 people he claimed were buying from him.

Sorry for the rant, slightly offended by the use of the terms "pity" and "suckered".

Ah, it's his own fault for not knowing the value (or perhaps not caring about the value) of MvC2. He was the one who advertised it. I see nothing wrong here.

Calm down. It was a joke man. Sorry if I offended you. I'm just amazed you got such a great deal from the guy. I shoulda put a smily face or something afterwards. I woulda done the same. :D

Not to bring you down too much, but isn't that the sort of thing we create so many "hait" threads about?
