Mass Effect - Gen. Discussion & Info - Pinnacle Station DLC Now Available 400pts
Thanks a ton Spectre! I've never played a game like this before and I'm not into RPGs at all. This is all foreign to me. There is zero tutorial as far as I can tell and I'm not sure exactly what I should be doing. I made it past the first mission and got the 25 achievement points and now I guess I'm in the main hub or whatever. I will try upgrading my team and figuring out what everything does (I keep getting items and I have no idea how to use them or what they are for or if I should be turning them into gel or whatever).
I think that the combat is pretty much a dumbed down version of gears of war.

Make sure to use cover, especially early game -- it helps. What class did you pick for your first go?
Great post spectre. Another tip I would add would be to change your team play from "defense/medigel only" to "go all out" (sorry, I don't remember the exact phrase). In other words, your teammates will automatically use their biotics and healing automatically without waiting for your command. It'll make battles a little easier knowing that they can take care of themselves (for the most part hehe).
That is a good tip as well for beginners. If you go into the game options menu you can set your team AI. It defaults to them only using defensive and healing spells on their own, and you have to tell them everything else. There is however an option you can switch to that will make the AI control everything they do including using offensive abilities. This is a great thing to turn on when you are already overwhelmed with the combat and want to only have to worry about yourself and your abilities as opposed to your teammates as well.

Another thing to know is that you can control your squad during combat using the D-pad (not the analog stick but the useless gray D-pad below it). The controls are:

Up - Orders your team to move up to the point you are pointing at. Great for flushing enemies out of hiding while you sit back and snipe out of harms way.
Down - Hold their current position.
Right - Attack the target that you are currently targetting. This will cause your team members to change focus from whatever target theyre currently on and attack the one you are pointing at.
Left - Orders your team to stop what they are doing and form up around you.

I'm pretty sure I got these right... its been a few weeks since I played so its possible I mixed the controls up (but you can always figure it out on your own once you understand what the possibilities are).

I would like two downloads. 1, a mod you could put on the game after you beat it, everyone would know you, assassins would go after you and 1-5 new planets will be available with "hero" missions (a whole hell of a lot harder). I would pay 10 even 15 bucks for that. I would also love a stronghold planet mission with a giant dynaty warrior size battle and if you won (it could be geth or a new enemy) it would be your stronghold base under your command! It could also maybe have a new partner for you to be on your team (maybe a rogue geth ). That would also be worth 10-15 bucks or more. How about you?:D

Just finished my first run-through. I stopped at some planets along the way but I need to play through again as a Paragon so I'll see the rest then. Awesome game, I still think Bioshock is my personal GOTY but wow am I ever impressed by what Bioware did here.

Question about the ending:

I choose to let the council die and have Captian Anderson on the council. What happenes if you decide to save the council? Do they end up dying anyways?

you save them and they are alive. personally I say the ending with them alive is a little better, but the two endings aren't that much different

So do you still get to choose if Captian Anderson gets into the council? I guess all this will carry over into the next game with your save file. I chose to let them die cause I went through the game being a complete dick to everyone. It was fun. lol

I'm reading through the book after beating the game and it's a decent read. Not too riviting, but it helps fill in some information, especially if you don't want to read all the codex entries.

So the first book is about Anderson & Saren correct? I'm not sure if I'll get that one, but the 2nd one I may have to pick up. I like that it's not just a re-telling of the game. That would be boring.

Now I can't wait for the sequel.

First one wasn't bad... it will fill you in on events that are mentioned but not fully fleshed out during the first game.

I pretty much know the ending to the first book. That's why I'm not to intrested in reading it. Will it be a rehash of what I already know, just more in-depth?

Basically you find out why Anderson hates Saren so much, along with some general background of the Mass Effect universe. I do think that I got more out of the Anderson/Saren storyline then if I had played the game before reading the book. I knew why he put his career on the line to help me.
It's in paperback, so it's not too expensive.

The price isn't my concern but the story doesn't seem to intresting. I have four books on my backlog already so I guess I'll skip this. Thanks for the info anyways.

I started my second playthrough on Hardcore. The game seems pretty easy now that I'm at level 50. I did notice the enemies use the shield thing though to make their health turn white (so you do very little damage to them). If I make it to insanity mode, I'll have to play through as my same character though. I think it would be suicide to start a new class/character on the hardest mode. I'm a soldier BTW.
Wow... 200,000 XP gap between level 59 and 60. D:
yeah, once I hit 59, I was like... forget this. I'll get to it later when i haven't been playing the game so much.

So...how the heck do I travel?
*NO SPOILER TAGS, BUT I'M NEAR THE BEGINNING, it's not really spoiler material anyway*
I'm trying to go to Feros, and have looked everywhere in the ship, and I have no idea what the fuck to do.

Go to the big holo-graphic galaxy on the top floor of your ship. Located down the long hall where your navigater hangs out (he's the old dude that doesn't like aliens.) You can select it from the ramp leading up to it from behind.
But when I go to that, I can only see the citadel as my option. I don't get it because I've already become a specter etc, etc.
Press the "X" button to Zoom Out. There's an option key on the bottom left of the screen.

I had a blast as an infiltrator. That being said, I'm a huge fan of sniping in videogames so playing as an infiltrator gave me plenty of opportunities to indulge my vice.

I also don't really care about the Biotic powers in the game so I knew I didn't want to be any of those types of characters.

A soldier or biotics/soldier hybrid (i forget the class name) seem to be the most well rounded characters. People who go with adept (full biotics) or tech classes are going to be specialized (only good with biotics or when fighting mechanic enemies) but its not that big of a deal since you can bring party members who will make up for your weaknesses.

I was personally an Infiltrator (soldier/tech hybrid) and I just brought biotics classes with me to do the spellcasting. Like Halo05 said above, sniping from afar can be a lot of fun (especially when you put hammerhead rounds in your sniper rifle).

I chose Vanguard just on a lark to see the beginning of the game. They seem to be a fighter/bio hybrid. I think I'll stick with him.

I wish i realized that the extra diolouge thing was important (poor wrex)....i was like hella pissed off when i realized what it allowed you to do
I think content of that caliber would probably be saved for a sequel. If anything we can probably just expect stuff like new planets/items and maybe a higher level cap for DLC.

P.S. It's spelt "Downloadable".

P.P.S. You will probably get a lot more responses to this if you post in the Mass Effect thread we currently have going located here:

maybe even an earth you can LAND on. i mean the cidedal is nice, but i wanna see whats up with the home planet. I would be cool after reading the discription if you could go to the nice part of earth and the slums.

I am playing to level 50 with my character then starting a new character on hard. After reading the xp difference between 59 and 60 I think it would be more fun just to start a new char.

On the DLC topic, I think it would be cool to put more ships in the game that you can dock with. They could just add new side quests about merchant or trade ships being taken over and you could go dock with them and complete the mission. The most wanted DLC for this game tho would be an add on to the story to explain a little bit of what happens between now and the sequel. I think a lot of people would be willing to pay $15+ for some story add on DLC.

I know that's definitely one of the reasons I'm not going to be selling this game within the foreseeable future. Didn't Bioware mention something about doing DLC that'd bridge the games?

Got my Level 60 achievement. It's actually not that hard to reach it if you start a new game on Normal difficulty and just worry about killing enemies instead of completing assignments.
Clock Eden Prime, do the bare-minimum missions on the Citadel, do some UCW missions where the killcount can be high, then go to Feros when you're close to getting to 60.

Now I just need to keep spamming my new Engineer's powers and I'll get my complete nerdpoints (Sabotage and Overload are awesome on Normal).

Can you change your squad while on the Citadel. I'm about 4 hours into the game and
I just got Tali
and would really like to know just in case I get in some combatz.

In your case there will be a moment coming up shortly where you can change your team. Usually though, you can only choose your team when you leave the Normandy.

I had the moment
after hearing the audio about Saren and the chick with great tits from TNG.

For those starting the game, I'd recommend thiking ahead to your future playthroughts - on hard and insanity. When you unlock an achievement for using a skill/weapon, it is made available for your future made characters. Therefore it can be helpful to think about what class you want to play through second and what that class is lacking in.

For me, I played through first as an adept and unlocked singularity which I then I put on my vanguard, which has made the going a lot easier on hardcore and now insanity.

Hey, did anyone have a problem with the Feros sidequests? Namely talking to Davin after killing that alpha varaan (sp)? He keeps saying something about having lost his wife...Normally I wouldn't care, but having a sidequest started but not finished annoys me.

i dont think that is a sidequest...just random talk...ive been through the game a few times and havent missed many sidequests, and i dont remember one on Feros about some guys wife

I seem to be having a real rough time with this game. Aren't enemies supposed to flinch when shot? I have no idea if I'm shooting something.

Also, is the game supposed to stop and load randomly during fights, cause it happened.

1. With the sniper rifles (assuming you have some mods on them), the enemies often die with one shot. That's how I knew I was hitting them :) .

2. I never had the game stop and load during fights. The framerate gets choppy at times (and is never sky-high) but I never felt like it was affecting the outcome of battles.

When you are targeted on an enemy you will see their health drop and that is usually a pretty sure sign that you are hitting him/her/it :p

I did not have problems with loading during battles but I have heard other people complain about bizarre/frequent load times that I did not personally experience. I am not sure what causes the disparity in this occurrence.

Well I'm playing on this, so I can't really tell what's going on :p

Where do you see the enemy's health? Is it in the bottom left, that meter? And do I have infinite healing items? Because I seem to just press "Y" whenever, and there doesn't seem to be a number count that goes down.

Yeah, I'll be fighting, and it will stop, as if I paused it. And on the bottom, it will say it's loading. The Xbox and Mass Effect aren't even 2 days old yet.

yeah it will happen, even though Mass Effect doesnt have earth shatering (excuse the pun) graphics, the lighting on the game is a strain the the 360, so that loading screen pops up often, especialy on some of the more light intensive planets

as for the weapons and enemy health...

enemy health is displayed on the top of the screen, it will have a white bar and a red bar, the white being shield and red being health

if you want to take your enemies out quickly use a incendiary bullet mod on your weapon or ice bullet mod. they both have their advantages...

Incendiary: Increased firepower and prolongued damage to enemy health but increased weapon heat, so fire in bursts only.

Ice: Slightly increased firepower and NO, i repeat NO weapon heat (i may be wrong, ive only ever used the X ice bullet mod so im not sure about the earlier mods). also the rate of fire is drasticaly slowed but you neednt worry about holding your finger on that trigger as your accuracy isnt harmed that much by the recoil

and finaly the health kits

no you dont have unlimited, their should be a number on the bottom left of the screen near your health that has a first aid cross on it, just above/below ( i dont remember) your grenade count
