Me and my Katamari Final Impressions
hmm maybe if GR has this in I've been eyeballing this....
I got mine from GR (a switched preorder so only $30 in GR credit) and they got another one in for the store as well. So chances are unless someone else snagged them, that your GR has it. I'm going to have to crack this one open soon as there are such differing opinions on it. Makes me curious. How come NO ONE comments on the 2D "old school" sidescrolling mini-game version of Katamari included in this game - it sounds like the coolest part to me.

I must not have found that yet (or unlocked it), as I certainly have no idea what you are talking about. Like others have said though, it takes about half an hour to get used to the controls, but it will all of a sudden click and feel natural. From that point out, it's Katamari goodness.

I think it's the "credits" game - so you probably have to finish first. It's a 2D sidescrolling Katamari - I think you just jump. I watched some gameplay vids of it a while back - they made it look like the old 80's arcade version of Katamari :D.

Me either.

I just did a level where you have to roll things up and their age gets added to the ball, and you have to get over 3000 years... it was pretty awesome.

I love this game.

I also unlocked my first eternal level!

OK, I finally cracked this open tonight and played on the couch while my son played his usual game of Mario Party 4, 5, 6, or 7. I think it is excellent, though I concur on the severe hand cramping. Just like with the console version it is addicting and you keep wanting to try that new level you just unlocked. But I'm going to have to limit myself to 1/2 hour per day or I'm going to end up unable to type (which I need to do as a programmer :D).

I don't know how if this is supposed to happen (or it is very easy on this one), but I unlocked the eternal level first try on the initial (Turtle) level after the Tutorial. Then I couldn't clear the Canary level . Finally I got through it and did about 4 more. I've gotten better scores on some of the later levels (the age one for example), but no more eternals unlocked yet. I think I scored 86 on the Turtle and hit 96 on the age one and ninety-something on one of the others. A few I only scored 8 on or so :D.

Finally had to force myself to turn it off.

the funny thing is most of the hand cramping is due to the instictive nature to press harder than you really have to =)

Well, I beat the game today, just playing an hour or two a day for a few days. I'd say it is a bit shorter than We Love Katamari. It also lacks the diversity of that game. You start to get a little tired of doing the same thing over and over the last few levels. Yes, he tells you to collect different types of things ("cold", "heavy", "big", "grand", etc), but mostly it is a race to beat the time/size milestones just to make it to the next stage. I think towards the end you have to do 4 stages (house, town, continent, world) though the world stage may be reserved for the very final level because I got much bigger in that one that I had previously.

When you beat the final level you play the 8-bit sidescrolling Katamari during the credits, which is very cool. You have 3 lives (and die if you fall in a hole or get caught on the left side). I didn't make it through the first time but the second try was pretty easy. Then the king said I had some sort of bonus level to try, but I had to stop (I can barely type right now 'cause of the cramping!).

I still have more to do in the game - particularly collecting all the presents and cousins, and the rest of the eternal levels (I got the house one first try). Then if I still feel like it I might go for a complete collection as I've come close on the other games but never quite did it. I'm not sure how much I'll replay levels to get better scores (unless I'm shooting for the eternal) because it doesn't seem to make a difference, unlike the console games (glowing planets and shooting stars for example).
