In September 2010, the joint administrators, Ken Pattullo and Paul Dounis, from business and restructuring specialist Begbies Traynor, said efforts to rescue Realtime Worlds had been unsuccessful but renewed efforts were made to conclude a sale of the IPR.

"We are obviously very happy to have concluded the sale but at the same time very much regret the loss of jobs as a result of the closure of Realtime Worlds," said Paul Dounis of Begbies Traynor. "As a consequence of the IPR asset sale all outstanding wages and holiday pay claims will be met in full. GamersFirst is a pioneer in the free-to-play space, thus APB will be re-launched as a free-to-play model game rather than the previous retail model. People who previously bought the game can now look forward to playing it again once it's back online."

"The acquisition of APB is an important complement to our main Free2Play™ third-party publishing business," says Joshua Hong, CEO of GamersFirst. "We believe in putting our gamers first by encouraging the community to tell us what they like or dislike and then incorporate that feedback into our evolutionary development process. The core principle is to completely eliminate all economic barriers for gamers to experience our games."

GamersFirst will publish APB: Reloaded as a AAA Free2Play™ title, developed by US based Reloaded Productions Inc. using Unreal Engine 3.

"APB was a game that had several exceptional features and some brilliant ideas, even though it was plagued by some initial balance and monetization issues," says Bjorn Book-Larsson, CTO and COO of GamersFirst, and responsible for GamersFirst's studio and game development efforts. "We want to take all the unique features of this title, such as its unparalleled character, weapon and car customization systems, and convert the game to a true free-to-play game. We are deep into the planning and early execution stages for this next chapter of APB and we will share more details in the near future. In order to put Gamers First' we will also actively engage the community in many aspects of all the planned changes."

APB: All Points Bulletin is a massively multiplayer online third-person shooter game based in the modern-day fictional city of San Paro featuring two factions, Enforcers and Criminals. Players can join either faction, and then form their own customized team and group to join the constant battle across the urban landscape.

GamersFirst and Reloaded Productions plan to launch the next chapter of APB in the first half of 2011.

I dunno if you've already posted this, but GOG.com will give you 3 free games just for registering. I haven't had time to play them so I dunno how good they are. They seem to have good reviews but it's easy to give a good review for a game that costs nothing.

DigiPen Institute of Technology is a a for-profit college located in Redmond, Washington which has a focus on computer science, computer engineering, and art with emphasis in creating video games.

Each year RTIS students are formed into teams ranging from 4-8 developers. Art students are not required to work on the game projects but are awarded credit for participating in Junior level or higher projects.

Starting in 2004, Freshman year DigiPen students work with an in-house integrated development environment (IDE) called the FUNEditor to develop a 2D graphical game. Second semester developing a text-based game over the course of the semester.

Sophomore year, students game teams develop graphical games.

Junior year requires that games feature 3D Rendering, and often serve as the first real experimentation with physics, artificial intelligence, and networking.

Senior year students are significantly less restricted to allow for more artistic control, essentially allowing the students to focus on their specialization or the game's design.

The games are owned and copyrighted by DigiPen. They are free and available to download on their site.

A style close to Spectrum ZX, with its dark background and bright colors, proper fit with the story, because it does look old and somewhat horrifying.

Adventure Game Studios

vsp40j.jpg

Adventure Game Studio allows you to create your own point-and-click adventure games, similar to the early 90's Sierra and Lucasarts adventures. It consists of an easy-to-use editor to create your games, and a run-time engine to play them.
The game interface is fully customizable, with classic Sierra and Verb Coin templates provided by default. AGS manages most of the game so that you don't have to - it does all the donkey work like load/save game functions, pathfinding and scrolling rooms so that you can concentrate on the parts of your game that make it unique.

Set up your rooms, characters and sprites visually in the editor, then add some script to handle game events and you're done! You can even create a standalone EXE file containing your entire game, which you can then distribute to your adoring fans worldwide.

So, how much does it cost? Nothing. That's right, AGS is free, and you can even create commercial games with it (subject to license terms).

Megazell's Comment - Plenty of games to dl here many of them have already been featured on this list but you can keep yourself up to date with others that were not posted and that are coming up.

Metro Conflict

If you're anything like us, you woke up this morning hoping for a brand-new, Unreal Engine 3-based, free-to-play shooter from South Korea to be announced. And alas, Alliance of Valiant Arms developer Reduck has satisfied just that need in announcing "Metro Conflict: Presto" by way of a joint press release with Epic Games Korea.

We only note the collaborative nature of the press release because of the total lovefest that ensues around three paragraphs in. "Epic's Unreal Engine 3 was a big factor in our success with A.V.A. [and] we're looking forward to pushing ourselves even further with Metro Conflict: Presto," Do-Min, Ok, chief technology officer at Redduck, said of the deal. Epic Games Korea's Ray Park similarly offered, "We're thrilled that they're using Unreal Engine 3 again for Metro Conflict: Presto, and can't wait to see what they're able to do with it this time." And he'll see soon enough, as the free-to-play FPS is planned to go into open beta this December. But for now, we've got the dramatic teaser trailer for you just above.

Thread Update

Wooties!!! Awhile back this thread hit 1,300 games! I also started to post more and more of my sources for others to check out. I have quite a few others and will be posting as I go along. Lots of games on those sites and I doubt I will ever have the time to check out every single one. If you find one on them that I have not posted...put up a post about it :)

As always let me know what type of games you want to see on here...I am going to be posting more adventure, strategy and RPG games to push the number count to over 100 for each. Then I will move on to the other game genres that are under 100.

Enjoy.
Awwww I was hoping head over heels was a porn game! Ah well! On a separate not, you often seem to be preaching to an audience of one with this topic, but on black Friday when people are busy tossing good money at overpriced new releases just to get 15% off...it stands out even more! Iv got a bit of a backlog to work through and will probaly buy a few cheap steam games, but I do plan on coming back and taking a look over your work here and playing your recommended titles sometime in the next year after I get through said backlog!
You think so? I often get a lot of PMs and such saying Ty and what not...I think some people may be embarrassed (for whatever reason) that they like free and legal PC games and therefore don't post on the main thread? Or they don't want to disturb the flow? I like posting them so I'm OK either way :)

There are plenty of other places to get porn games ;)

I did send some to a few people awhile back via PM - they were mostly gore/porn games from Japan that were in the same vein as platformer and platformer shooters but they were a little too disturbing for my taste.

Edit - This is the 2nd adventure game to be listed with the title 'Head Over Heels.'

The Game Is Wizard

This game is Wizard is a kinda-sorta remake of Wizard on the C64.

Arrow Keys: Move
Spacebar: Jump
Ctrl: Use Spell (when available)
Esc: Back to Menu
Alt+F4: Quit

It auto-saves your progress. Try and get all the treasures on all levels; that's where the real challenge lies.

Megazell's Comment - Developer is looking for some feedback and the game had a stable build out but will be getting upgrades and such as per input. Primary links has all of the info. Props to PP for the vid.

Circuit Breaker

Turn Based Strategy/Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Circuit Breaker is a strategy game where the players fight not with armies, but by placing different buildings. The player controls sentient electronics components that make war upon each other. The goal of the game is to destroy the opponent’s CPU.

Megazell's Comment - Another excellent game by the Indiebird crew. I'm calling it turn based since you have to charge up for constructions but later on in the matches it becomes real time strategy as your buildings are now fighting for supremacy.

Cave of no return

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Cave of No Return is a score-based arcade game that draws quite a bit of inspiration from Canabalt, but still manages to be fun to play in its own way. You're a girl on the run inside a long cave passage with the ceiling collapsing right behind you, threatening to bury you alive if you're not quick enough to escape from it. Players can jump over pits or slide under stalactites by using the cursor keys, and the size of the game window can be changed by pressing the plus or minus keys on your keyboard.

Your score is submitted automatically at the end of each run, and the default player's name can be changed at the main menu screen. -IndieGames.com

Yeti Hunter

First Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Hunting

Yeti Hunter was first released on the GDC show floor and it may well be the creepiest title that Vlambeer has manufactured yet. As you might have already guessed, you're going to be gunning down some Abominable Snowmen in this one. However, if you were expecting rampant mayhem and a cadre of collectible firearms, you would be wrong. Unlike most first-person shooters, Yeti Hunter is kind of on the quiet side.

It is set within the depths of a snow-laden pixelated forest. There's a smear of blood on the ground. All around you, snowflakes are tumbling down from the skies with not a care in the world. Your quarry? Nowhere in sight. Most of your time in Yeti Hunter is spent combing through the woods, alert for a fresh pool of blood or a flicker of movement. Though initially simple seeming, the tension in the game can ramp up when night falls. Will the hunter become the hunted? You don't know. Vlambeer didn't say. As the hunt continues, it's hard not to grow a little jumpy. How many are out there? Does your prey have family? Does it have angry family members hell-bent on immediate, messy revenge? - IndieGames.com

Website Spotlight

JayIsGames/Casual Gameplay Design Competition

11161781.jpg

Jay Is Games (A.K.A. Casual Gameplay) is a game review website that features daily updates and links to casual games, browser games and flash games of wide interest to casual gamers. It was founded on April 19, 2003 by Jay Bibby initially as a personal blog, although it now has several contributors.

Several video game genres are covered; including escape the room, puzzle and platform game. The site is constructed as a blog, and attracts a large community of commenters. Jay and the site's staff writers read over and filter the weblog comments, often commenting themselves. Comment threads often include hints and walkthroughs.

Competitions

Jay Is Games has also become known for its game design competitions. As of June 2010, Jay Is Games has conducted seven competitions, with an eighth in progress. Although the first competition was focused on producing simple puzzle games, recent competitions have had themes such as "upgrade" or "replay" that entrants could interpret into their games. This openness garners much creativity from developers and enthusiastic responses from visitors to the site.

Cash prizes are given, and sometimes relevant gifts, such as an Adobe Flash download. The main prizes are chosen by the site reviewers, however a unique Audience Award is also given. This prize is guaranteed "at least $200." Visitors must donate at least one dollar in order to vote (to prevent multiple votes), which goes to whichever developer the voter chooses.

Game Design Competitions

Game Design Competition #1 spanned from August 4, 2006 to August 25, 2006 and had the theme of "a simple puzzle game".

Game Design Competition #2 spanned from January 5, 2007 to February 23, 2007. This competition also had the theme of "a simple puzzle game", but also had to incorporate an interpretation of "grow".

Game Design Competition #3 spanned from June 13, 2007 to July 15, 2007. This competition's theme was "replay".

Game Design Competition #4 spanned from August 6, 2007 to October 1, 2007. The theme of this competition was "ball physics".

Game Design Competition #5 spanned from January 2, 2008 to March 16, 2008. This competition's theme was "upgrade".

Game Design Competition #6 spanned from August 24, 2009 to October 18, 2009. This competition's theme was "explore".

Game Design Competition #7 spanned from November 16, 2009 to January 30, 2010. Entrees in this competition had to be interactive fiction games with the theme of "escape". CGDC#7 was also the first competition to be judged directly by the public.

Game Design Competition #8 spanned June 1, 2010 to August 1, 2010. This competition's theme was "sandbox".

Game Design Competition #9 began on September 22, 2010 and continues until November 15, 2010. This theme of this competition is "friends".
