Final Fight: Last Round

Action/Brawler

This is an update of Hyper Final Fight using OpenBOR engine. It includes several game modes and hidden characters. His author Mr Q describes this version as "the true way Hyper Final Fight was going to be back then - I just didn't have the amazing features OpenBOR has now."

Megazell's Comment - Classic Beat'em up action game with many different modes to play in. Supports 1 to 4 players. Second link contains the entire game with ready to play setting. No setup needed outside of setting up your gamepads and/or KB. The games does not provide enough challenge though so expect a breeze through.

How-to Play LAN Multiplayer Games With One PC!

Lately I've been experimenting with multiseat configurations for Windows. If you have a dual monitor setup, after installing multiseat software you can just hook up another set of USB keyboard/mouse inputs and have another terminal ready to go to browse the internet, play games, etc. I did this, and with my budget gaming PC (Phenom II X2 3.2 GHz, GTX 460, 4GB ram) I've played LAN matches of Age of Empires 2, Portal 2 co-op, Borderlands, and CS 1.6/Source, all with smooth frame rates.

I thought this was pretty cool, and it doesn't seem to have been mentioned on Reddit, so I've compiled a list of multiseat software to share:

Support for Win XP, Win 7, 3D acceleration

SoftXpand (Requires service pack 1)
ASTER

Support for Win XP only, 3D acceleration

Friendly Seats (Win 7 software in development)

Also, there's BeTwin which supports XP/7, but it does not seem to support 3D acceleration.

I'm running SoftXpand for the time being, as I'm running Win 7, and I had several graphical issues with ASTER when running games: the screens would flicker when using anti-aliasing, and sometimes one of the screens would turn black. This may be a 64-bit specific issue with video card drivers, though.

As for any other issues, some games explicitly don't allow multiple instances to be run, but running instances in sandboxes with Sandboxie will get around that. You can also use Process Explorer to get multiple instances running, read part 3 of this tutorial (Thanks, zuperxtreme). I even ran Steam with Sandboxie and I was able to LAN some Steam games. Not all games work with this setup though, a few will have issues with networking because multiple instances use the same ports (simple fix?).

Maybe others won't find this as useful as I do, but it is pretty nice to have Reddit and a full-screen game open at the same time (we're all nerds here, right?)

*edit: If you buy a cheap USB sound cards, you can have multiple sets of speakers, one for each workstation. I've personally tested this with ASTER and SoftXpand, but all listed software claims this ability.

The Indie Game Legend

Shooter/Arena
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

After four months of development, I have finally finished and released the project I started shortly before TIGJam; The Indie Game Legend.

The Indie Game Legend, or TIGL for short, is a spiritual sequel to the NES cult-classic of a similar title- The Guardian Legend. The gameplay and themes are also very reminiscent of Guardian Legend, as you take control of a space warrior while exploring over 125 rooms spanning 5 different areas. At your disposal will be an assortment of 8 different weapons to dispatch dozens of enemies and bosses. Solve the puzzles of each area, defeat the bosses, rescue the captive indies, rinse, and repeat until you complete your challenging mission.

This game was developed specifically for the enjoyment of the TIGSource community as well as fans of The Guardian Legend, so the humor is very referential. Though, even if you don’t get the jokes you should still be able to enjoy the game on its own, and I hope you will!

Concurrence

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Concurrence is a so called cinematic platform game. Unlike other platform games you will know (like „Super Mario Bros.“ or „Sonic the Hedgehog“), this game focuses on realistic movements, puzzles and a dense atmosphere. If you have played games like ‚Prince of Persia‘, ‚Another World‘ or ‚Flashback‘ you will know what awaits you. Many of parts of the game will require precise jumping and you might feel a little frustrated at the beginning. But don‘t despair, study the movements described in this manual and keep on practicing and you will find that it isn't so hard after all (you also have unlimited continues). This version was done for the April 2011 Monthly Adventure Game Studio Competition (MAGS) and does not feature the full game. It‘s more of a demo. The finished version will follow sometime 2011. ptp88 composed a great soundtrack for the game.

Super Hover Blast

Gamepad Support - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Super Hover Blast is a free 3D action/puzzle game that I’ve been working on for a while now (about 18 months on-and-off, I think) and which I have finally decided to release into the wild. It began as a project to create a physics engine from scratch and to teach myself C++ and morphed into something a bit more…

The best description I’ve managed to come up with for how this works in practice is “a bit like billiards, only in real-time and with all the balls trying to murder you”. If that sounds vaguely appealing to you check it out.

Megazell's Comment - Use the 'Super Hover Blast Setup' program to dictate how the game will run. It will be a bit weird since it's reminiscent of a DOS interface but it's pretty easy to use.

Mini Footprint Thief is a turn-based puzzler, in which you have to break into a house, sneak past the laser robots and make your way to the large, bright green pixel in the final room. The robots move in straight lines and turn when they hit a wall.

The key here is to be cautious and memorize where and when you can and can't move. This can be achieved by moving back and forth between two spots on the grid. There is no time limit and moving fast might get you confused and killed - repeatedly. - IndieGames.com

Nobuyuki Forces 4

First Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Nobuyuki Forces 4 is the fourth game in the rails shooter series from Takahiro Miyazawa, who is also known for founding SKT Products and creating a number of Moai statue-filled games for publication on his site. The shoot and cover system is very similar to the Virtua Cop and (especially) Time Crisis games, where pressing the space key causes our female protagonist to duck out and pop a few shots at her enemies. You will also reload your gun if the same button is pressed when your back is next to a wall.

There are four stages to play through and three boss fights to contend with, and though that sounds like plenty of content it really just takes about fifteen minutes to beat Nobuyuki Forces 4 on your first try. A time attack mode is also included, but many players won't really feel like replaying the same areas at a harder difficulty once they've seen most of what the game has to offer.

Despite its length, NF4 is still one of the better Flash-based rails shooter that you could waste your time on. - IndieGames.com

Theme: Supernatural

Making its rounds today on the Internet is an English translation of an RPG Maker 2003-built, French Windows game: OFF. OFF is often lauded by French gamers "for its strong story, great characters and incredible atmosphere," reports the translation source.

Players assume the role of the Batter character who must purify 4 zones of specters. While tasks to advance are not always evident in OFF, players are aided by a creepily purring cat and by talking to zone-folk. I have never been a fan of random, turn-based battles, but at least the game offers an "auto" option to do the fighting. If only it had a fast-forward option, as well...

Along with bunches of battles and large areas to explore, OFF offers several thoughtful puzzles to keep the brain engaged. After unzipping the game, make sure you install all the English font files that are in the base directory for easy viewing.

Adventure

Theme: Mystery

There's three important things you need to know about this thing:

(1) This game is effectively what we believe to be a fairly realistic lie simulator. Your main character is creating, tracking and maintaining one big fat lie.

(2) Holy crap, we're sorry. We didn't sleep too much during development and we didn't realise just how complicated this game would get.

(3) This game is also very weird. It's a film noir, sepia-toned outer space murder mystery with tweed jackets and airlocks. Heck, typing all of that out REALLY puts its weirdness into perspective. Please suspend disbelief where necessary.

YOUDUNNIT is a murder mystery game (set in outer space, yo!) where you're pretty much the murderer, and the whole thing kinda plays "backwards" in time: you're retracing your steps starting from a few hours after the murder and ending up mere moments after said killage. Or to put it another way: have you ever watched that really cool movie called "Memento"? Yeah, game time kinda works like that.

The problem is that while you're retracing your steps in the past, there's a detective in the present asking you questions and stuff about the events you're reliving. Doing stuff in the past PROPERLY allows you to escape scrutiny. Breaking causality, on the other hand, and allowing your behaviors to completely and utterly make no fucking logical sequencing sense is meant to represent a "hole" in your story, and you'll get caught out and thrown out of the airlock with a bunch of babies or something.

January 14th

Dear friend. My sojourn in parts foreign is at an ende. I am at lodgings in Southwark not far from the bridge at Stoney Street, come dine with me two days hence to ring in the newe year. I have not enjoyed amiable English companie for some long time and it would be refreshing to hear my mother tongue used in its proper manner again.

Your friend,

John Croft.

When you receive this note from your old acquaintance John Croft, you expect nothing but an evening of good food and drink and Croft's lecherous tales. Instead, you quickly find yourself plunged into a conspiracy of black magic that involves not only Croft but some of the most powerful and important men in London -- and possibly even someone else, someone much closer to your own heart.

The King of Shreds and Patches is a novel-length work of interactive fiction. In it you will explore an historically accurate recreation of Elizabethan London, circa 1603, interact with some fascinating characters both historical and fictional, and (if you are clever and lucky) thwart an occult conspiracy that threatens to bring down the entire city -- or worse.

Trapped

Shooter/Arena
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Trapped is initially pretty confusing. You've got a ship and a portal to protect from incoming digital enemies, but simply killing them isn't enough. You also need to break open the yellow nodes inside, then drag them into your portal to give it enough power to leave the dimension before the time expires.

Shooting is on your left mouse button, and dragging on the right - but if a yellow node manages to get to the portal by itself, you'll then need to destroy it instead. Note that you'll need to change the controls in the options menu to keyboard + mouse, as it's default set to a gamepad. Also, the down key will sometimes act as a selection key on the menu. - IndieGames.com

A short 2D fighting game with 4 characters made in HD by Amit Dabydeen.

Megazell's Comment - If you have the ability to connect your PC to a TV or Projector...do so. This game is EXTREMELY well done and made for large screens. If you don't know how...check out the OP for links to videos on how to connect your PC to your TV/Projector. The game is really short and one of the characters need some balancing but it's still groovy in my book.

Golden Axe: Myth

Theme: Fantasy

The Empire of the Joined Lands has been the real symbol of wealth and power
since a long time ago. But now, evil creep-ed into heart of the Empire, and the
Golden Axe was stolen. The council of Defensors was tricked and misguided.
The four best warriors of the whole realm are already on pursuit of the enemy.
The council gave them the power of Elemental Magick, since great are the
dangers they'll have to face. They know no fear or doubt. In their hearts and
minds there's only the sacred quest: to get back the Golden Axe.

Megazell's Comment - The primary site has free OST and sketch art. This may be a top pick but I need some more time with it. This game is great and would be a top pick if there were not so many game breaking bugs. Every time I get Panther character on my team the game soon crashes when I end the next level with him :(

Air RPG

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Air RPG is a small NES styled game. Most of the features should be familiar if you've played the old Nintendo Metroid series. A few RPG elements are also present such as obtaining experience, using items, and leveling up to make yourself stronger. The ability to fly in-game is a Balloon Fighter reference.

There is no actual story, but the game does have a basic plot. You play as an exterminator sent to demolish the existence of harmful pest that dwell underground. This is a Metroid reference, where the plot is basically destroy the evil mother brain and exterminate the metroids.

This was an experimental project, but it is very well polished. There is also documentation present. Press F1 in-game for reference.

Surprise Bummies

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

The planet earth is enslaved by alien invaders known as the Bummies. The main character managed to escape their clutches but the main character's father failed to escape with him. Wanting to save his father and everyone else, and with his previous background knowledge as a research scientist, he discovered the bummies' weakness: their insatiable desire to eat Easter eggs. Thus, devising a plan to lure the bummies with the eggs he created to destroy them.

Megazell's Comment - You're basically collecting the eggs into rows of 3 or more. Once you have all 3 eggs of a certain color/type you can unleash the eggs and the attacks the eggs contain. This will allow you to attack the Bummies that are approaching your location from the left and right side of the screen.

Tight

Shooter/Horizontal
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Quite easily the most fitting name this game could possibly have, Tight is a tense shooter in which a huge spiked monster is constantly following you, and you need to move in the opposite direction mighty fast.

The problem is, there's a ruddy huge wall in your way too which needs shooting down, and lots of little monsters who want to take a bite out of you. The key is to balance shooting at the boss with shooting ahead to clear a path. Unfortunately, the balancing is a little off - every few seconds, you'll be able to right click to open up the buy menu, and bag yourself beefier rockets and more grinding power, and very quickly you'll be far too powerful, and not have a hard time at all.

In this case, it also means that the scoring system is pointless, since you can technically keep going forever, as long as you don't kill the boss, and get yourself a ridiculous score. Still, Tight is great fun and hopefully the developers will build on this idea and turn it into a fuller, even more intriguing game. - IndieGames.com

Katawa Shoujo

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Romance

Visual novels aren't really my cup of tea. I'm not sure why. I think it has to do with the general stereotype associated with them and the fact I don't feel an explicit need to court virtual characters. Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, the writing and the art can be superb. It's just, you know, not my thing. As a result, I can't, for the life of me, figure out how exactly I found out about Katawa Shoujo a long time ago. I definitely have no regrets, though.

In a nutshell, Katawa Shoujo is the story of a high-schooler named Hisao Nakai. During the introductory sequence of the game, the protagonist finds out through no uncertain terms that he has a congenital heart defect and lands in the hospital for some time. After a certain period, he is then relocated to the fictional Yamaku High School, an educational institute designated for disabled children and filled with strangely attractive peers.

Hey, it's still a visual novel. Nonetheless, Hisao Nakai's growing attraction to the variety of girls that populate the school neither feels out of place nor campy. It's a slow, hesitant thing that seems fitting of a high schooler and framed with far more curiosity than lust. More than anything, however, what I liked was the portrayal of the lead character's fight with his disease, the personalities and the fact that the various ailments suffered by the cast were not, well, fetishized. - IndieGames.com

Game Biz 2

Simulation/Management
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Other

It's a game that simulates what it's like to run a game business. You start your own Game company and develop virtual games and platforms/systems that you can sell.

Names of the game are misspelled by design. All real life game names are auto scrambled by GB2.

You start off in 1980 and work your way to 2006.

When hiring people you should first off check their current wage also check their current skills in programming design and graphics, at least one of these should be 3-5 in the beginning of the game. Also its important to have employees with high leadership skills so they can be assigned as team leaders. And check that their talents for studying is 2-3 points or higher in the areas where you will use them.
