Akasa

Shooter/Vertical
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Uridium meets Xevious in this fast-paced retro shooter. Only 20 minutes remain before nuclear Armageddon, and it is up to you and your acrobatic silver space craft to save the day!

Akasa steps back in time by rendering 3d objects in a limited palette of bright colours to reproduce the ‘feel’ of 80’s C64 classics such as Impossible Mission, Uridium and Paradroid. And of course, in the best tradition of C64 gaming, the game- play itself is what Akasa is all about.

But be warned, Akasa is no push-over!

Just like the arcade games of the past, Akasa bountifully rewards persistence and skill but is quickly dismissive of the half-interested, casual attempt. Akasa thus sounds out a challenge to best of the old school gamers.

Features

* 15 colourful levels of fast-paced mayhem
* Real-time mult-source lighting and shadowing effects
* Many game secrets, including powerups and secret levels
* Two completely different “winning” gameplay strategies

Wazzal

Simulation/Space
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Wazzal is a freeware single player space privateering game. Capture a ship to become an interplanetary pirate! Fly your ships in our solar system and accomplish missions while gathering a fleet of ships to fight bigger foes.

The year was 2314 and you had just been hired as a crewman of a small cargo vessel Wolf IV. Transporting goods between mankinds most remote colonies: Saturn’s moons, Pluto and such. Mankind had spread to pretty much everywhere in the solar system forming the Federation. Some even dreamed of going to other stars, but no one had such technology. It was a peaceful time, no wars, no killing. You could almost wonder why everyone had big armed starships, but that was the way it had to be. If you are a spacefaring race, every single one of your ships has to have a lot of guns aboard even though it’s peace.

Then came the aliens. Not warlike at all, a very peaceful bunch. But the news they had was bad. They claimed that our sun would blow up in a great big supernova and that they were here to rescue all those who had enough money. Good business for the aliens you might say. The Federation collapses into wars and corruption. You too, decide to seize the opportunity to gather enough money to be saved. With your closest crewmates you capture the ship you are working on, Wolf IV, to become interplanetary pirates. There is no time to loose, you must gather enough loot to win your salvation.

Originally released in 2002.

Dark Deed

Action/Arcade
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Horror

Dark Deed is a top down adventure based, time critical game where players race against the clock and swarms of enemies as they make their way through 3 levels of fast paced fun. Enemies follow the player dynamically based on their position so each play through makes for a unique experience that requires fast thinking as well as skill to complete, and no level is ever quite the same twice. The play experience is augmented by the over-the-top nature of the game, which is reinforced at the beginning of each level by introducing a new “locale” through a small cut scene. By combining the comedic aspect of portraying a demonic sperm and the quick, yet deeply strategic nuances of control and enemy behavior, Dark Deed strikes a fun and funny balance that will captivate you.

Facade

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Drama

Facade is an artificial intelligence-based art/research experiment in electronic narrative – an attempt to move beyond traditional branching or hyper-linked narrative to create a fully-realized, one-act interactive drama. Integrating an interdisciplinary set of artistic practices and artificial intelligence technologies, we have completed a five year collaboration to engineer a novel architecture for supporting emotional, interactive character behavior and drama-managed plot. Within this architecture we have built a dramatically interesting, real-time 3D virtual world inhabited by computer-controlled characters, in which the player experiences a story from a first-person perspective. Façade was publicly released as a freeware download / cd-rom in July 2005.

You, the player, using your own name and gender, play the character of a longtime friend of Grace and Trip, an attractive and materially successful couple in their early thirties. During an evening get-together at their apartment that quickly turns ugly, you become entangled in the high-conflict dissolution of Grace and Trip’s marriage. No one is safe as the accusations fly, sides are taken and irreversible decisions are forced to be made. By the end of this intense one-act play you will have changed the course of Grace and Trip’s lives – motivating you to re-play the drama to find out how your interaction could make things turn out differently the next time.

A normal version which was made in 3 hours, and a Xtra version that I added stuff to, to make the game more interesting and control the difficulty somewhat.

Missile Matador II

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Other

In Missile Matador you have to trick homing missiles into hitting each other… without hitting you. If you fall off the bottom of the screen, you also lose! It’s a fun concept, and it’s unnerving to see all those missiles trained at you in the brief breathing period before each level starts!

Missile Matador II extends the concept by adding timed missiles and a way to make your own levels (by editing text files). The rules of the game have also changed slightly – in order to win, you must reach a goal somewhere on the screen.

Megazell's Comment - This is a game made in the same spirit as Karoshi 2.0 which is an excellent platformer/puzzle hybrid. Enjoy!

Thread Update!

700+ games are now listed :) WOO WOO!

A while back I posted up a list of Flash Game sites...outside of a few rare gems I don't play flash games like I use to. For those that are PMing me Flash games...I won't post individual games from sites that list thousands of flash games. Instead I will just update the ongoing flash list below.

[quote name='Megazell']
Website Spotlights
Free Flash Websites

Below are a list of free flash sites. I've been asked before to review them and post them up on my list here on CAG and 2 other forums. The thing is that there are SO many flash games and sites that it would be too daunting of a task to cover them all. On top of that some of the games are really short. Which is a good thing sometimes. Some of them games are REALLY good and put many retail games to shame.

If you know of any site that is not on this list and that does not BOMBARD your PC with pop-ups let me know and I will update the list as we grow. Of course it has to be free too! :)

I am upgrading this game to a Top Pick. I just recently got a chance to play this game all the way through and it is extremely well made. Has a nice suspense/horror feel and some of the easter eggs in the game pay homage to old school Vincent Price movies which is a big + in my book.

Thanks for that link. I did hear about it in passing from a friend. Nexuiz is/was a great game. However, Quake Live is dominating most of my free FPS time since most of my allies are on it. I even took down my Nexuiz servers a few weeks ago.

Like all things for me...once it goes mainstream it's time to look for a new adventure elsewhere.

I am holding off posting new games for a bit because I am re-working the main first page.

POST UPDATE

*Sorry for the double posting of this update but my changes where not saved the last time I updated this old game.*

I am upgrading "1213" to a Top Pick. I just recently got a chance to play this game all the way through and it is extremely well made. Has a nice suspense/horror feel and some of the easter eggs in the game that pay homage to old school Vincent Price movies. Which is a big + in my book along with alternate endings that make it a must to replay but since it's a short game (10 to 20 mins each episode) it's not a huge pain.

I was attempting to make sub genres for each section but it proved to be too daunting. Too many of the games are hybrids or they were falling into the category of 'other.'

I did however make some small changes by moving some games from the action section to other genres since they were more than 50% leaning into other genres.

Fixed a few links and mislabeled screenshots.

You can only move two directions at a time, but can change whenever you hit a Switch Pixel. Staying on the screen increases the amount of points you can earn. As you move, you leave a wave behind you, and when you collect a Wave Changer Pixel, you power up, or power down, your opponents whenever they collide with your wave. Confusing, yes. It's probably easier to see when playing.

ORBITER is a free flight simulator that goes beyond the confines of Earth's atmosphere. Launch the Space Shuttle from Kennedy Space Center to deploy a satellite, rendezvous with the International Space Station or take the futuristic Delta-glider for a tour through the solar system - the choice is yours.

But make no mistake - ORBITER is not a space shooter. The emphasis is firmly on realism, and the learning curve can be steep.

The Marionette
Megazell's Top Pick

Adventure
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Mystery

The Marionette is an adventure game with a great art style, an alluring story, and a generous dash of horror.

You take the role of Martin, a struggling sculptor, as he wakes up to find himself outside a mysterious house with his car parked eerily out front. The keys are gone so he has no choice but to enter the house and ask for help. After solving some puzzles and meeting an enigmatic guide, he finds himself trapped in a dark little world; the exit of which leads to entirely different places from his haunting past. I don't want to spoil the story, but it's definitely interesting enough to keep your attention.

The Marionette features your typical point and click interface with the ability to interact, inspect, and talk to various objects and people. You can also combine and use items just like you'd expect. I should also mention that you can die in the game on more than one occasion. Fortunately, the game auto-saves before one of the instances, and because the second instance comes shortly after, you won't lose much progress.

The graphics are very well done, with each area looking a lot like an oil painting. As you progress through the story, you'll see how well the style fits. The sound is quite alright, being mostly MIDI, though it actually sounds better than what you're used to hearing.

Megazell's Comment - Excellent game. Not too long. Not too short. The game is quite disturbing and bizarre...just a warning. Enjoy.

Murder In A Wheel

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Mystery
Theme: Humor

Story

Roderick, Lady Blackwin's beloved pet hamster, was cruelly murdered. Her husband Lord Blackwin asks the amateur detective/pizza delivery guy Lionel Ulmer to solve the case and find the murderer. Curiously, Roderick was killed in a room that had been locked the entire evening.

Behind The Scenes

Murder in a Wheel (short MiaW) is a retro-adventure emulating the style of old LucasArts titles. Those familiar with games like Day of the Tentacle or Monkey Island will immedately recognize the interface. As the name already suggests, the game is a murder mystery and, more specifically, a locked room mystery.

MiaW was created with AGS (Adventure Game Studio) and currently runs on Windows only. There are ports of AGS for Linux and Mac (beta), but I was unable to test them.
MiaW was a semester work (Game Design, Interactive Storytelling) at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), and it won the Best Short Game AGS Award in 2007.

Another shorty but a goody, Desktop Dungeons:

Fight your way through a fantasy dungeon in 10 minutes or less
Classic roguelike play re-imagined as a single-screen puzzle game
Unlock loads of classes, races and challenge dungeons for awesome replayability
Online leaderboard allows you to compare yourself against other players
Deep, challenging, randomly-generated gameplay

Desktop Dungeons offers an unquestionably unique approach to roguelike games by taking compactness to the extreme. It distills the entire genre to a few core ideas which pay homage to the greats while forging new ground with gameplay similar to that of Oasis or Tower of the Sorcerer. It also features emergent complexity that rewards truly skilled and thoughtful players.

With an extensive character unlock system and an average play length of about ten minutes, Desktop Dungeons is a great coffee-break game for just about any player.
