Riah

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Riah is a cute little action-platformer, influenced by the Castlevania series of games. You can jump, double-jump and switch between various weapons, all with strengths and weaknesses that you should probably be mindful of. Enemies can be killed through walls. The controls may feel a little stiff but it remains a fun, if relatively short, diversion.

Megazell's Comment - The game is in Japanese but very fun and short. Press C will allow you to change your weapons. Z allows you to shoot. X is for jump pressing it 2x will allow for double jump. Arrows for movement. Lots of references to Castlevania, Metroid and Super Smash Bros. in this gem.

Adventure

Theme: Drama

"There exists no such thing as a perfect sentence. Just as there exists no such thing as perfect despair."
- Haruki Murakami, "Hear The Wind Sing"

... on that blindingly bright day ...
... on that very day of winter ...

Imagine what it would be like to have your entire life -- your friends, your family, your interests, your loves, your hatreds, your future -- all taken away from you in a single instant. Imagine a hard, lumpy bed, a noise-filled ward, the sharp sting of needles entering your flesh at all hours of the day, the indignity of being woken up just as you are about to fall asleep for incessant vital statistics measurements, the doctors whose names you don't know (but that's okay, because they don't remember your name, either; they just remember you as "the non-small cell lung carcinoma in room 6"), and your own name, your very own name, that you have just about forgotten.

Then you might have some clue as to what it is like to be dying in a hospital.

This is a story of disease and suffering; of medication and adverse effects; of thoracotomy scars and cellular poisons; of the living who cannot help but to die and of the dying who cannot help but to live; of a resting place other than "on 7F" or "at home".

This is a story of so many things.

But most of all ...

This is the story
of a girl whose heart was standing still
and a boy whose breath was being stolen away,
both of whom die.

Megazell's Comment - Text based games are not usually my things...especially if they have no visuals but this game caught my attention with sound and art along with it's excellent story.

Go kick some 8-bit zombie butt.

When there was no more room in hell once again, Carlo, the devil's servant, sent most of hell's population back to earth. The dead stepped out of their graves to spread horror and chaos. Now it's your turn to clean the graveyard from those strange happenings going on there and to take the final step - defeating Carlo!

"Gloomy Nights and Living Dead" is an oldschool arcade action game that will remind you of the good old days. If you were a zombie hunter back then, it will have an even stronger effect of nostalgia on you.

Megazell's Comment - An excellent 2 player old school top down shooter. I have a blast with this game every time I boot it up with company. The music is catchy, the sprites are cute and reminiscent of the old Nintendo/Sega Master System days of gaming and the difficulty and boss battles are quite challenging.

Tiger's Bane

Shooter/Vertical
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Military

Tiger's Bane is a hybrid of the shoot-em-up and simulation genres, combining side scrolling action with realistic elements such as limited ammunition, accurate modelling of weapons and their effects, flight dynamics that take inertia and wind into consideration, and a wide array of real battlefield machinery to fly, destroy, and protect.

In Tiger's Bane you take on the role of air cavalry commander against a growing world terrorist threat. You have full control over which helicopters you and your wingmen (up to 2) will fly, including the Apache, Comanche, and Super Cobra Gunships, and the Blackhawk transport helicopter. You can also call on support from F-16 and A-10 attack planes from the fighter squadron.

In this game you use the mouse to control your hands. Your hands stick onto the walls alternately and you can climb around the level. You can use your free hand to punch bullets and enemies but if they touch the hand you are holding onto the wall with, you get sent back to your last checkpoint.

Controls:

Mouse = Move hands
Left click = place checkpoint (only do this when you really need it)
Alt+F4 = Quit
F2 = Restart

Megazell's Comment - The game is pretty hard very conservative with your checkpoint usage. The primary link leads to the developers main website which at this time is not hosting all of the games files anymore. The 2nd link has the game.

Fighting

Theme: Fantasy
Theme: Martial Arts

If you love fighting games you will be a fan of 'Super Cosplay War Ultra - Genkaitaoppa'.
The controls for this game are not too hard to understand, you really only need 6 keys or gamepad buttons.

Movement is most basic.

Punch and kick can do auto combos and provide the most number of different moves, along with the specials. By pressing a direction a punch a simple new move can be used very similar to 'SNK vs Capcom: Battle Of the Millenium' for the Neo Geo Pocket and other similar fighting games.

The throw is a standalone button that may or may not have a combo attached to it based on the character your select.

The last attack is similar to that of "dust" in 'Guilty Gear', which knocks your opponent high into the air, but has a longer delay than the punch or kick both before and after the attack. You can then launch into a mixture of combos using your punch and kick buttons.

Mind you ever attack you do comes with some wild animation in which the characters go through a slew of costumes and ability with respect to the characters from anime, movies, books, comics and games that your character represents. Some character come with over 20+ costumes changes though out their combos.

If you've played fighting games, you'll find the controls for this game very easy, the key combinations are not long, but are generally the common quarter and half circles along with Z shaped and quarter+half circles (I am referring to the movement keys). Once you get the hang of the game with a single character (which will take around 15 minutes the 1st time, less if you're played the game before), move onto another character. Get the hang of about 5 characters, and you'll be ready to pwn everyone else.

Simply said, this game is a great addition to fans of the fighting genre and should be tried out to those who are fairly new to the genre as well, or simply lookin for something fun you and your friends can play.

This version also goes ONLINE with the added download located on the author's site.

This version also comes with a character list with moves located in the installation folder.

Megazell's Comment - The primary link leads to the author's site. You must dl 6 files and unzip them together. Then you must rename the .exe file. It has an extra .exe on it and you should remove that. You can also dl another file to play online with others. I put all of this together in one file ready to dl and install with no further editing needed on the 2nd link.

"Septerra Core Dream About the Past" is a sequel to the commercial game Septerra Core Legacy of the Creator.

Story
In "Septerra Core Legacy of the Creator" we learned about world of seven shells. Each of them were inhabited by people and animals. All shells have been combined, and the gift of the creator was shown to everyone. All wars and hostility ceased.

In this sequel 3 years have past since the end of the first game, a new danger hangs over Septerra's world. Big explosion caused by Nergal, disconnects all the shells once more, which results in destroying the world spine. All shells are going in their one direction, and they will collide in 45 days.

Maya - main character - will have to gather her friends to save the world again, but this time with help of new stranger - Doskias.

Doskias claims that Gods gave him new life and ability, and now he is on a mission to rebuild everything what he once destroyed?

Megazell's Comment - Played the first game and enjoyed it a lot. This game has a few grammar issues but I think it does an OK job of capturing the atmosphere of the first game.

Thread Update.

Main page list has been updated.

All of my top picks are now marked on the main page.

All links have been verified.

Those that were not working were replaced.

If an author's site was down during posting but is currently up now...it was added so that everyone can check out their other games.

Corrected text errors in some post.

Removed comments that no longer apply to the games posted...Example: This game's servers are overseas so you may experience lag....Removed due to US servers added to said game.

Enjoy.

I love this thread Megazell. It's brought me back to PC gaming after a very long hiatus (WoW doesn't really count, kind of). I'm grabbing Rise and Fall right now. Sounds awesome, especially for a free game. Also, to throw some recommendations out at you, not sure if you've played them or if they're on the list as I didn't scour it thoroughly, but League of Legends is supposed to be an excellent free DotA type game. Also, I think this one is free, a friend let me play it, but Blip Blop is sort of fun and a good time waster.

Thanks for your input. I hope you enjoy what you find. Even if you do not, don't hesitate to give your 2 cents about it.

League Of Legends is located in the Strategy section under Real Time Strategy - 3D.

Wow...Blip And Blop is a game I played back in 2008. I will be sure to post that up soon if it runs on modern OSes with no problem.

Gravitational Combat

Turn Based Strategy/Action
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

An old principle in a totally new, atmospheric layout.

Fight against human players in the depths of space, calculating optimum angles and tweaking the velocity of your shots, always taking the gravitational forces of planetary constellations into consideration.

Features

High resolution graphics (up to 1024x768), true color, fully rendered
Genuine sound effects
True multiplayer party action on a single computer (virtually no limits)
Plunge into vast dimensions of space (your hardware sets the limits)
Fully customizable playing conditions
It's all totally free of charge

Megazell's Comment - Very simple game were you type in the velocity and degree of your attack before firing the trick is to try to anticipate the turns your projectile will take due to gravitational forces. It's a fun 10 minute game.

Dragon Wars

Theme: Fantasy

Dragon War, a game with 8 levels. The story of the game is told between each level!

Megazell's Comment - The game story is in French. Basically, you are a friendly dragon that is trying to help out the local villagers by taking on other monster and dragons. Use arrows to move, space bar to progress story and ctrl to fire. Many of the bosses require you to kill them before they escape. Also some levels require you to put out fires with your tears. Enjoy!

Megazell's Top Pick
Resident Evil - Raccoon Madness
Megazell's Top Pick

Shooter/Top Down
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Horror

Guide Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield through a building in Raccoon City until you reach the top of the building with hopes of being rescued by helicopter

Of course there is a snag in that plan...this building is highly infested with zombies and other creatures.

You have only 20 minutes to escape before everything comes down.

Controls

Use the arrow keys to move around.
Ctrl to prepare the weapon and space to fire
Spacebar to open doors (without holding Ctrl).

Megazell's Comment - Make sure you use a game pad for this one. You need quick movements are you progress and the KB can be quite unforgiving. The game does not support game pads but you can use Joy2Key with no problem on it! The game is not in English but that's not a big deal. It's fun and easy to get into...Ending it may be something else ;)

Theme: Obstacles

Kenta Cho's boxinbox is just that: a seemingly recursive game about hitting a switch with a box in box as quickly as possible. Worry not, though; players aren't stuck in an infinite loop.

The entire experience takes a few minutes and only requires basic mouse skills. Each level rotates the orientation 90 degrees, forcing players to alternate between moving the mouse up and down or left and right to reach the switch.

Boxinbox also appears transparent; I believe Kenta Cho has shared all the code for boxinbox in the box to the left of the game. I'm not sure if it's possible, but it would have been great to see the programming code cycle through its lines as I played, so that I knew what did what and learned a thing or two. - IndieGames.com
