Final Fallacy Second Edition

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Its always interesting to see when certain games try to parody a particular game, or genre, or whatever aspect of a particular game they wish to make humorous. It can either be hit or miss, at times with trying so hard to be funny, other elements of the game end up suffering. However, in this game, the developers managed to not only succeed in making a humorous game, but also with the help of RPG Maker 2000, make an excellent RPG too. In Final Fallacy, what you see is a game that pokes fun at the many aspects of the RPG genre. It combines that with some funny dialogues with NPC's, events that occur, and more. You get some intriguing characters to play as, and overall, a good game that really is quite balanced in terms of such things as battling, costs and more.

Final Fallacy is a comedy role-playing game, The game features mostly standard RTP graphics and battle, but is mainly focused on creating humour out of all the senseless cliches that exists in other RPGs, as well as from the idiotic actions from our main character Guy himself.

I was having difficulty/issues when I tried Nexuiz even finding servers/people to play against. Any suggestions as to why that could be Megazell?
If you want a few free games for you list (I haven't check if they are all left out of the list, but the MMO's are), then take a look at http://www.gpotato.com/?m=games. A lot of the games on that site are free to play MMO's, and the others are free to play racers I think (some online racers). I am pretty sure that they are all free to play, last time I checked they were but things might have changed.
Hey

Turns out I did post Silkroad Online before - It was a rush job though - http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6738961&postcount=474

Perhaps, I will revisit it and make the post better :)

I remember that several years ago (maybe 4 now) on a whim I got really, really engrossed into this game. Mind you this was about when it came out, and there were a ton of players. There were so many players, that they couldn't put up enough servers in time and I remember that the game would lag tremendously, especially in towns. This was also before the rush of free MMOs really started, and I haven't checked my characters in a couple years, so I have no clue how populated the game is now nor how the game plays with the updates.

Silk Road I tried it around the same time, seemed to have promise but their server issues really killed any chance for me to really get into it.

Just got into the Vindictus beta and its pretty impressive. Fun action and the graphics are top notch.

Vindictus and LOTRO have my attention. Vindictus is really smooth with a gamepad too. Though their website is quite confusing with the ending of their closed beta and now it's in 'early Open Beta access' mode...which is really closed beta.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries
Megazell's Top Pick

Simulation/Mecha
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is a vehicle simulation PC game that was released in 2002. It is a standalone expansion of Mechwarrior 4, based on the Battletech Mechwarrior game universe. It was announced on July 9, 2009 that Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries and the Clan and Inner Sphere expansions will be re-released for free. As of April 22, 2010 the free release of MechWarrior 4 has been cleared by Microsoft.

On April 30, 2010, MechWarrior 4 Mercenaries was released to the general public by MekTek as a free download. However due to the massive influx of 100,000 downloads and web site accesses, MekTek.net and related services crashed. MekTek recovered the MekMatch match making service on May 1, 2010 and the forum was restored on May 2, 2010.

Plot

In the game, the player takes the role of Spectre, a male mercenary BattleMech pilot travelling inside the fictional interstellar region of the Battletech universe called the Inner Sphere during the FedCom Civil War (specifically during the time period from January 1, 3066 to late July 3067). The player makes a living earning cash and useful salvage from completing mission contracts for various factions. With these resources, the player can purchase new weapons and BattleMechs, pay for 'Mech repairs, and hire additional MechWarriors for his or her company.

The player has some control over which missions to accept and in what order. In addition, how each mission is performed has an impact on the timeline. For example, killing civilians and neutral targets results in infamy points, which in high numbers can limit the player to brutal and "unethical" missions. Competing in the various Solaris tournaments (a Gladiator-styled combat arena sport) can boost the player's reputation and increase the likelihood of gaining various mission contracts. Also, the player must choose how to balance his or her allegiance to the different sides of the war (Steiner vs. Davion). This is important as allegiance will eventually affect available contracts and even influence the ending of the game.

In general, Spectre's company walks a fine line between the two factions. During the course of gameplay, several characters, including the tactical officer, reveal backstory about the events leading up to their work as a mercenary, and these events often recount the fighting preceding and during the Clan invasion. In addition, depending on the sponsor regiment, the player gets additional history and background on the "current events" of the unit during the course of the game.

Megazell's Comment - Due to the botch release of this gem when it went freeware I refuse to post it. I am pleased to say they have made tremendous changes to the MTX downloader and to the actual game itself that makes it easier and faster to get. The editor the game comes with is also very well made and easy to use. Excellent game for simulation/mecha fans.

The Old Tree is creepy and odd and, in its own ways, rather beautiful. In this point & click adventure of sorts from Red Dwarf Games, you'll be in charge of helping a tiny, seed-like thing wriggle slowly towards some distant goal. Most of the adventure will consist of you wandering through the innards of the titular piece of vegetation, an experience that will have you doing everything from redirecting the flight of fireflies to waiting in an elevator. Gameplay-wise, The Old Tree is neither very long nor very deep. Unless you're completely new to the genre, you probably won't spend all that much time with the puzzles.

More a piece of interactive art than anything else, Red Dwarf Games' moody little production is a pleasant way to wile away ten minutes or so. - IndieGames.com

A long time ago, when the word was still young, the lad was seperated into seven kingdoms. The Elders of Star Haven foresaw conflict between the kingdoms as the greediness of the people became aparent. These elders requested a meeting with the original rulers of each of the kingdoms. They became Sages, guardians of their respective lands, and were sent back to the world as representatives from Star Haven.

Now, the Sages are long gone but their spirits live on in Seven Monuments. Legend has it that the key to peace with the kingdoms lies in the power of the Sages.

Many have learned of the power that could be obtained by taking control of these objects, and therefore taking control of the Sages. Two unknown villains have been reported sneaking around recently...

It probably will once I make it further in the game. Many times I come back to the list and upgrade a posted game to 'Top Pick' because I actually ended the game/series and got the full effect the author was shooting for.

Theme: Horror

MooD: Waist-High in Hell is a top-down shooter that features enemies from the Doom 3 universe, redrawn by Amon26 as minute but recognisable 2D sprites for the players to shoot at. The game features both a single-player campaign and a hotseat deathmatch mode, although you can't strafe nor change the frag win count which is set to twenty by default.

Our space marine starts out with a plain pistol in hand to use for defense, but enemies do drop weapons and medkits often enough when they are defeated. Some of the guns that you can acquire include a shotgun, machine gun, plasma gun, and the rare BFG weapon.

Benjamin is also running a special competition for players who can score over a million points in MooD: Waist-High in Hell. Details of the contest can be found here.

Megazell's Comment - This is a great shooter. Which should come as no surprise since the author has made several other shooters that are already on this list. Every game is bizarre and if you have the patient full of rewarding content towards the end. Hard as hell though. So not for those that require color coded help. The retro feel of the game is excellent. The game comes combined with Joy2Key. So if you already have it installed, you can safely delete the extra given to you.

Camelon

Theme: Other

Camelon is a 2D arcade game in which you have to help the disembodied head of a creature collect every heart in each level, all the while trying to avoid a collision with spikes or other enemies.

Moving the protagonist around requires tilting the entire screen left or right, so that the effects of gravity are shifted in your favour. Some enemies may be affected by changes in the orientation of a stage, but most are anchored to their initial spots or are able to travel freely inside the room.

You're not completely defenseless against these creatures either. In your arsenal is an indestructible umbrella that can be utilized as a weapon for knocking out many of the enemies that you will encounter (but not all). The parasol is also useful for repositioning yourself or reducing the speed of your descent while floating in mid-air.

There are only twenty-four levels to play in total, and your progress is automatically saved every time a stage is successfully beaten.

Open Beta - New World - Open Beta

Turn Based Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Conquest

New World is a turn-based strategy game that is best described as a mix of Colonization and Desktop Dungeons, created by Christopher for submission to YoYo Games' discovery-themed competition. The Challenge mode provides a different objective to achieve for every section of the world map, while the freeplay mode allows you to customize the rulesets and resources before starting a new game session.

Parts of the map are revealed when your ship moves into an unexplored section of the land, but food is consumed as well every time you decide to set sail. Food is represented by the bread icons (or wheat when rations are low), and currency is depicted by gold, silver and copper pieces.

Morale (shown as red plus signs) will start to fall if there is no food left or when your ship takes damage in combat, but you can restore half a morale point for each square explored on the map. There is limited storage space on your ship for treasure and loot, although the carrying capacity can be increased by engaging in naval battles with the pirates and earning experience points from your victories. Sailing to the left side of the map takes you to Europe, presenting players with the opportunity to restock food supplies or sell any surplus occupying the ship's cargo hold.

There are still some balancing issues and bug fixes that need to be sorted out, but a post-competition version of New World could turn out to be a really good game if all of the existing problems are addressed by the developer.

Megazell's Comment - Issues related to attack power strength have been addressed and patched. Still some other bugs but this game is shaping up to be a very fun challenge. The screen is a bit small too.

Space Funeral

RPG

NOT FOR MINORS.

A departure from his usual AGS offerings, Stephen's Space Funeral is a role-playing game created using the RPG Maker engine. The story is about a man named Phillip, who is on a journey to reach a place called the City of Forms.

You get to recruit only one travelling companion during the entire adventure, meaning that there is very little party management and individual character stats to worry about here. The exercise of grinding for experience is also kept to a minimum, and you can beat the final boss even before either of your party members reach level twenty or above.

The game takes about two hours to play from start to end, but you have to remind yourself to save often because there are no inns or checkpoints to record your progress for you. Should the random encounters becomes tedious over time, players can also use the auto option to have battles resolved for them automatically.

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Horror

In The Hive you play as Alex Rig, a reporter who was investigating a missing persons case when he discovers a heavily-fortified research facility while snooping around for clues. Similar to Iji, Prince of Persia and Flashback, Alex will be doing a lot of climbing up platforms and crawling through air vents to find ammunition or health-replenishing items that he can keep in his inventory for later use.

The taser he carries is effective enough against guards at close range, but only rifles and shotguns can protect him from being overwhelmed by chasing mutants that are more resilient to bullet damage. Both the protagonist's health and his weapons can be upgraded in small increments, provided that you manage to locate the special items required to level up their stats.

The controls might feel clunky and unresponsive at first, but if you give the game a chance to impress it could even surprise you with its high production values in just about every other area. This 2D platformer was created by Vanni del Moral as his entry for submission to the YoYo Games' 'Discovery' competition.

Megazell's Comment - Joy2Key is a godsend here. Makes the game SO much more awesome. The only con...can't full screen :(

This is a great site with a wealth of info on the indie game scene. Not only do they cover freeware games but they also cover browser/flash games and retail indie games.

They do a great job of following up on indie games in the mainstream too. Like when a game that was once freeware goes retail and is now available on X-Box 360, Wii, PS3, Iphone and other platforms. Or when the reverse happens like retail games going freeware. They also have interviews with the developers, coverage of different cons for indie game makers and contest galore.

On average they post about 30 to 40 freeware games a month.

Ikaros Tonight

Action/Platformer

Theme: Fantasy

Ikaros Tonight is a 2D platformer created by Dot Zo Games, developer of Journey to the Center of the Earth and the Xbox Live Indie Games release Ninja Bros. The objective of the game is to collect keys that'll unlock the exit door in each area, advancing from one stage to another until you've beaten every single level or run out of lives. Yellow orbs can be used to boost you upwards, and tapping the left or right cursor key rapidly while Icarus is still in the air causes him to float back down to the ground at a slower speed.

A large gem that rewards the player with an extra life will only appear after you've collected three small gems in a row, and a reset key (tab) is included for situations where you're stuck on a platform with no way to reach the exit. A password is provided to the player for every ten levels completed, and you can input this code to skip levels quickly or resume playing from a certain point the next time you run the game.

Mayflight

Action/Platformer

Theme: Fantasy

An exploration game. Mayflight follows a fairy named Aurora, whose lifespan is a mere 10 seconds.

Fortunately, there are sparks placed around the randomly-generated areas of the world that will increase her time by a couple of seconds. Your task is to see as much of the world as possible before she hits the bucket. The catch is that the world is infinite and goes forever, but as you travel further from the starting point, there are fewer sparks to collect. Eventually your curiosity will get the better of you in the form of death.

There's plenty more to it than that, with Roguelike elements, nasty baddies and dozens of different area themes to find.

Relive Orfeo's myth and bring Eurydice back from the Underworld by playing the semigod's own lyre in this short form experimental music based game! (c) 2010 DigiPen Singapore

"the use of music as a tool to evoke emotions, even if they’re a computer’s algorithmic sense of an emotion, is a novel idea that’s surprisingly satisfying to play" - Allen Cook

Swindler

Action/Stealth
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Prolific Flash developer Nitrome's latest release is Swindler: The Great Drop N' Roller, a unique puzzle-platformer with rope rappelling mechanics.

Swinging from a rope made of his own stretchy mass, Swindler's starring pile of green goop must carefully avoid enemies and obstacles in order to reach the treasure chest at the end of each level. The gameplay mechanics consist of lowering and raising the character by pushing up and down on the arrow keys, and pushing left and right to rotate the environment.

It's quite challenging at first, and later puzzles prove difficult even after the controls are mastered. It's very satisfying to play, though, and the animation quality is superb. - IndieGames.com

I haven't played it yet, but it sounds really cool.
Added it to my stack of games to investigate.
