Do not pass 8. I mean, yeah I understand it's hard not to, but try at least. If you can't help yourself, whatever. I'm just saying. It might cause you problems.

If you end up completely ignoring that, here's some instructions for cleaning up your mess:

Move with A and D, or the left/right arrow keys. To select an object, left click. To throw a selected object, right click in some direction. The further you click, the faster the object will go.

Under The Garden

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Life Like

Under the Garden is a sandbox-style exploration game set in a harsh winter environment, where supplies are limited and resources such as food and lumber for your fireplace have to be gathered from the land. Here you'll learn how to hunt, mine for valuable items, cut down trees for wood, and construct buildings or bridges out of bricks and boxes.

You can use a fireplace to save your game, but to do so you'd have to keep it lit with more firewood from the forest. There are quite a few safehouses to find in the wilderness, and many of them have their own individual fireplaces that you can utilize as checkpoint locations. Standing next to a fireplace also restores any stamina lost through constant exposure to bad weather conditions or injuries.

The AGBIC compo build of Under the Garden comes with a (slightly complicated) level editor that supports mods and user-created maps.

Megazell's Comment - More info on the game here - http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=13394.0 and this great review - http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/05/jim-sim-under-the-garden/

Not-So-Massive Action Game

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Warfare

Not-So-Massive Action Game puts you in the heat of battle, ready to shoot down helicopters, pump enemies full of bullets and bomb exotic bases.

It's a relatively simple 2D shooter, but it's also a great deal of fun. There are eight challenges to play through which start off as simple 'survive for 3 minutes' ordeals, but soon become more interesting, with you swooping into enemy territory in a helicopter, planting bombs, then grappling your way back out. The whole thing can be played through with two players on the same keyboard too.

It's worth reading through the readme before you play, as some of the controls aren't obvious.

Probability 0

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Horror

A downward-scrolling, survival platformer that goes on forever. There are two modes: one in which you are given a certain amount of points to spend on abilities and then try to last as long as possible (there is no potential to level up in this mode) and another, where you start off with nothing and must try to earn points to level up and gain new abilities (mainly by killing floating enemies). The first mode, as expected, is a lot easier with less of an aim, while the second mode is tough as nails but far more rewarding for those who persist.

A puzzle platformer with some cleverly thought through puzzles. Different guns are used to work through areas of the game (grapple gun, web gun, etc). Snakes Of Avalon

Theme: Drama

Snakes of Avalon is a dark point-and-click adventure game about a drunk man in a bar. It's all a bit surreal and features special potions and talking posters.

There is lots of talk of murder and the like, and you'll be trying to stop it in between the drinking. There's some mental stuff going on here. A moose. Superhuman strength. Some guy in the toilet who just won't come out. There are 4 acts altogether and roughly about 90 mins of play, although if you're usually quite good at point-and-clicks, you'll probably be quicker than that.

Features:

- an unique, never-before told tale of murder and deceit in 4 exciting acts
- countless hallucinations
- several brutal killings
- ugly toddlers
- a tragic story of love between a man and a fish
- constantly changing environment filled with dirt, booze, piss, and disgusting bugs

Hexagon

Action/Arcade
Single Player - Yes

Netbook Friendly

Theme: Other

VVVVVV and At A Distance developer Terry Cavanagh has made one hell of a palm-sweating, vertigo-inducing experience in Hexagon, one of hundreds of games made for the GDC-bound Pirate Kart. I've spent several tries (in between periods of resting my eyes and brain) to get further than 35 seconds into Hexagon, but I fail.

Players control a triangle that skirts along the edges of a hexagon, dodging oncoming patterns of lines and shapes. In addition to the onslaught of patterns, the visuals often pulse and the stage switches between clockwise and counter-clockwise rotations. The game is one continuous stage, with shape-themed "levels" layered in 10-second increments. I cleared point, line, and part of triangle, and I learned square was next. Maybe there's an end-goal; I'll never know.

I never had the stomach for carnival rides, but I imagine this is a wonderful substitution. How about a stereoscopic 3D Hexagon experience? That would be a sensory overload. - Indiegames.com

Aika

MMORPG
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Aika is a PvP heavy free fantasy MMORPG that closely resembles the PvP elements in pay to play MMORPGs like Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the game’s Realm vs Realm battles is that the game can handle up to 1000 vs. 1000 battles, which is quite a feat as the game has beautiful graphics and effects. Aika is actually one of the first free to play MMORPGs with a large scale Realm vs Realm system and the first to actually have solid, genuinely fun gameplay. With many playable classes, a unique ‘Pran’ pet system and many more interesting features, Aika is certainly well worth checking out. The game’s six playable classes are:

Fighter (M) - Like in most other MMORPGs, the fighter in Aika is a powerful melee oriented class. They have high hitpoints and defense and make great tanks. They wear metal armor.

Dual Gunner (F) - Dual Gunners specialize in mid-range DPS and Damage over Time skills. They wear leather armor.

Warlock (M) - Warlocks are the primary offensive spellcasters in Aika. They can deal quite a bit of damage with their spells, but have low hitpoints and defense. They wear cloth armor.

Paladin (F) - Paladins are a mix between warriors and clerics. They are capable fighters as well as a good supporting class. They wear metal.

Rifleman (M) - They specialize in dealing damage from a long distance, making them the ideal long-range DPS class. They wear leather armor

Cleric (F) - They are the primary supportive class in Aika. They are incredibly helpful to any party as they have both healing and supportive skills. They wear cloth armor.

A a primary objective - I don't think any game listed here falls into that category. There are sub portions and a few games on this list that have a gameplay mechanic like that. For example in Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures there is a portion of your Jedi training that is all hidden object related. It's a mini-game about your perception.

I'll try to keep my eye out for something along this nature going forward.

Together Fight!: Friendly Hat Spirit

Shooter/Horizontal
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

A boss rush shooter where you start off by yourself and fight a single enemy by executing key combos to send his projectiles back at him. Different sizes of projectiles have different combos; larger fireballs require larger combos. Every once in awhile the boss throws a friendly character toward you that you can capture by executing the appropriate combo. Doing so adds to your strength and gives you a friend to fight alongside you.

Also you wear a flying hat that lets you fly and turns words that you say into magic spells. I'm going super literal for this one. This is basically just an excuse to make a ridiculous shooting game with a happy song, possibly with karaoke lyrics.

Momodora
Momodora II

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Momodora

Momodora is a 2D platformer that tells the story of an orphan girl named Isadora who went looking for a rare item in a secluded labyrinth. This network of caves harbour bug-eyed enemies of different shapes and sizes, but all of them bear the intention of hurting you in some way or the other. Fortunately you came prepared with a magic leaf that can be used to attack your adversaries, and throughout your quest more powerful weapons can be discovered and added to your bag of tricks.

Momodora II

Momodora II is the sequel to rdein's 2D platformer Momodora which was just released one year ago, set in the same world as the previous game but with a new protagonist to control this time around. You play as Momo, a shrine maiden from the KoHo village, sent on a mission to defeat the Underworld Queen who is causing problems to nearby villages.

Momo starts out with just a basic maple leaf swing attack, but during the adventure she will discover and gain new abilities like the double-jump technique and a long-range charm weapon that is useful for keeping enemies at bay. Maximum health can be increased as well by collecting love letters contained in treasure chests. Should you find yourself lost inside the labyrinth of caves, there's also a map that you can bring up to view by holding down the shift key.

If you love the first game in the series, then you will be very happy with what Momodora 2 has to offer: improved graphics, better gameplay, but also more of the same stuff that everyone expects to find in an enjoyable exploration platformer. Don't miss out on this one folks - IndieGames.com

Hello and welcome to the Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy Remake, web place. Hopefully you’ve gone to Marks and Spencer and got your towel. We’re remaking the original game of 1984, released by Infocom, programmed by Steve Meretzky and story plotted by Douglas Adams himself.

Difference between this remake and the BBC one, is that we’re not remaking the game into a text-based game, but instead as point and click, with keeping however the interactivity levels very high, but also introducing two levels of difficulty.

Theme: Fantasy

Nudo is a slick puzzle platformer set around the concept of shifting the level to allow our naked hero to press the buttons and exit through the door.

The WASD keys control his movement, while the arrows keys shift the blocks depending on his position in relation to them. Later levels introduce obstacles that add an extra depth, including areas in which blocks cannot be shifted, and levels where sliding all the blocks into their holes reveals the exit. The levels I liked best were the incredibly simple ones - there is a level which is made up of just two blocks and the exit.

There's also a challenge mode, which asks you to play through each of the main campaign's levels but only do a set number of shifts.

Ardentryst

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Ardentryst is an action/RPG sidescoller, focused not just on fighting, but on story, and character development. Strategy as well as reflexes will be needed to overcome the game. The game is set in another world. It is somewhat a cross between Donkey Kong Country, Mario, Castlevania and Kingdom Hearts. Ardentryst is focused on a fantasy world. The player is guided through a storyline which he or her must act in and play a major role in keeping peace and order in Ardentryst. It features two playable characters and a variety of weapons, items, armour, monsters, and beautiful level scenery and graphics.

The game is programmed solely by me, Jordan Trudgett, and I'm now attending my first year in university, doing a Bachelor of Computer Science, majoring in Multimedia and Game Development. A lot of the art was also done by me but I did get a few artists to do some of the better drawings :)

The game was started on the 12th of September, 2007, and only now is nearing a somewhat complete release.
I would like to add more to the game, but I don't have the time right now-- so this will be a very big release!

As well as being free, to download and to play indefinitely, the game is open source which means anyone can view, edit, play around with and learn from the source code of the game. It is written purely in Python, with use of the pygame module (a wrapper around SDL.)

I hope the many sleepless nights and countless hours of work poured into this game are worth the enjoyment of everyone who plays it.

Tales Of Unspoken World

Tales of Unspoken World is a first person run and jump action game that features objects depicted as white lines on a black background, giving it a unique look and feel reminiscent of a Vib Ribbon game. There are three different worlds to sprint in, not counting the short tutorial section that provides a training ground for players to familiarize themselves with the controls.

The R key can be used to restart a level quickly, and to exit the game just press the left Alt and F4 key. Due to the short nature of the AGBIC competition, the hand animation seen in the gameplay video below is only implemented in the Mac version, but the developer has plans to expand on the idea when time permits.

Cenfinity

Theme: Other

Cenfinity is a blaster set in a semi-circle. Enemies and pick-ups move around the circle in a clockwise direction, and you need to blast the baddies and grab the powerups.

The game allows you to select your own controls to begin with, which is a pretty neat idea. There's not really much put to moving around the circle though - you might as well stay at the very right, as your bullets spread as they move. It's a really great base idea, although I'd like to see someone build on the concept more.

Megazell's Comment - The game will take quite a while to get use to since the orientation and controls are made to work counter intuitive with what you would expect. Fun challenge.

I have about 430 other games to overview and post up when I can.

Thread Update.

Going to be re-doing the 'Flash Website' spotlight post. I will be breaking down each site already listed as many of them have changed and now offer installation, achievements and ports to other OS and system (consoles and such).

Story

The investigation of a wave of kidnappings is going nowhere. One day someone claiming to be an eyewitness to one of the kidnappings approaches the local police department. It's time to find out what he knows...

Reviewed by Indie Games The Weblog

By the Numbers is a short adventure game created using the AGS engine, featuring full voice acting and characters rendered using a combination of motion-capture script and simple vector graphics. You play as lieutenant Timothy Orman, a cop who has to question an eyewitness to a kidnapping for clues that'll lead you to the criminal. Nearly the entire game is set inside the questioning room (a One Room One Week competition rule), excluding the short intermission sequence that splits the story into two acts.

The post-competition version includes an option to skip dialogues or cutscenes, while subtitles can also be toggled on and off by pressing the S key. The conversation between the two main characters can get a bit colourful at times, so you might want to consider lowering the volume of your speakers or putting on headphones before playing it if you have children in the house.

Strap-on-bomb Car

“Urre’s Strap-on-bomb Car is one of those awesome small addictive games. It looks easy to play, but believe me, it’s not that easy I can’t deny that it is fun to play game and you will enjoy playing it along with your kids (if you have any).” - Alexander “motorsep” Zubov, Kot-in-Action Creative Artel.

Megazell's Comment - This game is ARGHHHH...it's a lot of fun. A one button game that will have you at the edge of your seat as you try to not crash and not go boom. Catchy music that changes randomly as you play.

Hubris

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Hubris (which has absolutely no relations to the card game I wrote about sometime back) is Andrew Yoder's experiment in 'minimalist beauty and color'. Created over the span of a winter break, Hubris is a short game and one that is heavy on the atmosphere and light on game play. According to Yoder's description of the game, Hubris was heavily inspired by Shadows of the Colossus, Egyptian architecture and the works of Robert Yang - all elements that show themselves heavily in the infrastructure and the construction of the level. It's a lovely piece and one that won't take too much of your time. While I have a feeling that this is going to be it, so to speak, I'm definitely hoping we will see this world expanded into a full-fledged game of some sorts in the near future. Please?

A little puzzle platformer with a gravity switching mechanic (look out for the red rounded corners and hold down the required key). It's charmingly done, if a little frustrating at times.

Megazell's Comment - The art style, music and game play is most excellent. I recommend playing the game on hard for the full effect.

Post Update.

This is the beginning of my highlights of free flash game websites. This was originally the ongoing list of flash games.

[quote name='Megazell']
Website Spotlight

2nqr0iv.jpg

Kongregate is a website that allows users to upload user-created Adobe Flash or Adobe Director games. It features an API that flash developers can integrate into their games which allows users to submit high scores and in some games, earn achievement badges. Badges and local score submissions are only available on games whose developers choose to use the Kongregate API.

The site was created in June 2006 by sister and brother team Emily and Jim Greer. The site was initially run through a testing phase which lasted until December 2006. During this time, game developers and players tested the site's interface and functionality. In December of the same year, the site was formally opened to the public. The site formally entered the beta testing phase on March 22, 2007.

The Kongregate website itself was designed by Happy Cog Studios.

As of July 2008, Kongregate has raised around $9 million in capital from investments by Reid Hoffman, Jeff Clavier, Jeff Bezos, and Greylock Partners.

In July 2010, GameStop announced an agreement to acquire Kongregate

Radial Plus

Shooter/Horizontal
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Created for the Something Awful Game Dev Challenge, Radial Plus is an lovingly polished space shooter with a twist - you can't shoot directly an enemies, but instead you must bounce your shots off a wall and into them.

The arrow keys move the ship, while the mouse aims, shoots and boosts. It's a great little journey, made all the better by the high quality visuals - it may be a game made entirely of simple coloured blocks and backgrounds, but there are some lovely effects on show. I particular like how the sound becomes muted whenever you leave an airlock and drift into space.

It can get a little difficult as enemy fire starts to bounce all over the place, but as long as you're not hit twice in quick succession, your ship will continue chugging along. The above video shows an entire playthrough, so it's best not to watch it all the way through if you're planning on giving it a go. - IndieGames

Filosofighters

Fighting
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Parody

Filosofighters is a flash fighting game with a cast of history’s greatest thinkers. You pick your fighter from a roster including Saint Augustine, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Niccolò Machiavelli, René Descartes, Friedrick Nietzsche and Karl Marx, and then battle through the history of philosophy. It has a fairly simplistic control scheme: each character has two special moves, arrow keys control movement, press X to kick, or C to punch.

It’s the special moves where Filosofighters comes into its own. Each philosopher has special moves like Karl Marx' hadouken, Plato can reach into the world of the forms to transform into the perfect form of himself, 20 feet tall and made of solid gold. Jean Paul Sartre & Simone De Beauvoir have powers based on the Other and the Feminine. Nietzsche can summon the Übermensch to kick his foes in the face.
