Platformerman

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

I've got to be honest, I didn't really get Platformerman at first. It's a platformer (would you believe) in which you bomb bad guys, save the good guys and reach the exit.

Except that it's actually not that at all. Platformerman is in fact a speed-running puzzle game, and each level is set out in such a way that you can usually keep running right, as long as you drop bombs in the correct places. Just check the above trailer for an idea of what I mean - there's tons of situations in which dropping multiple bombs in the same place is a very good idea indeed.

It probably won't be to everyone's taste, but there are bound to be a fair number of you who take pride in grabbing those gold scores. The game is in beta at the moment, so the Passport mode isn't available yet, and there is no tutorial to teach the ropes. Hence, here's a quick guide - the space bar drops bombs, and you want to bomb the red guys and save the yellow guys, then run through the rainbow finish. - IndieGames.com

Teleportower

Action/Platformer

Theme: Science Fiction

Teleportower is a puzzle platformer with fifty levels to play, split evenly between the five towers that you have to visit in order to beat the game. The objective here is to collect a blue gem located in the final room of each tower, but to do that you would first have to overcome a series of increasingly difficult challenges designed to thwart the efforts of any brave adventurer who attempts to loot the treasures within.

Our hero can jump, cling to the edge of a platform, or use his teleportation ability to switch between the two rooms in every stage. A trap could appear in one room and not the other, so you would need to alternate between both of them regularly in order to beat a level. - IndieGames.com

Tag: The Power of Paint

First Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Other

Tag: The Power of Paint, a first-person platformer created by seven RTIS and BFA students at DigiPen, was chosen from ten IGF Student Showcase Finalists as winner of the Best Student Game Award.

Tag delivers an innovative approach to multiple genres—platformer, puzzle, and first-person shooter—by allowing the player to manipulate the physical attributes of the game's environment using different colors of paint.

The creators of Tag describe it as "a first-person puzzle platformer which focuses on the players’ ability to modify their environment as they see fit, simply by painting it." They encourage players to enjoy "the endless supply of paint and all the power that comes with it" while traversing each level.

Theme: Horror

Rogue Survivor is a survival roguelike sandbox game with plenty of depth to explore. You are put in the role of an average person in the middle of a zombie outbreak, and must stay alive for as long as possible.

Each day you survive, you'll level up and become stronger - but tougher enemies will also appear. Apart from finding weapons and barricading yourself into a safe area, you'll need to make sure you have a good supply of food and perhaps some friends to help out. Before you play, you'll need to read about how to play the game by pressing H in-game, as there's quite a lot to it. Apart from playing a survivor, you can also play as a zombie and see how many humans you can eat. - IndieGames.com

Theme: Science

Inside your computer there is a secret world of slumbering bits and bytes, of which you may not have known until now. But now this world is threatened and desperately needs your help!

Overnight the life-giving Oxyds have shut tight. Unaware of the danger, the world threatens to suffocate. Only you can rescue this world by opening all of the Oxyds.

Every landscape in this world has a certain number of Oxyds, which you must find and open with your black marble. But watch out! Oxyds will only stay open and release their oxygen if they are of the same pattern or color and are opened in order.

Not until all Oxyds are open can you proceed to the next landscape. The various objects lying about can be collected by rolling over them.

However, you can avoid picking up an object by holding down the mouse button when approaching it. Once collected, an object appears in the lower part of the screen and can be sorted by moving it with the right-hand mouse button. A maximum of 13 objects can be collected.

The object placed at the lower left of the screen can be activated or put back in the landscape by using the left-hand mouse button.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR
RESCUE MISSION!

I Wanna Be The Boshy

Shooter/Platformer

Theme: Fantasy

I Wanna Be The Boshy is a very hard game with tons and tons of content and features.
It's inspired by I Wanna Be The Guy, which is a classic game with lots of retro hints to old games from the NES, SNES and others.

Some of the features includes:

Single player mode.
Competetive Coop play.
Race your friends and see who get's to the next savepoint first! There are also ingame CHAT included.
4 different difficulties.
Ez-mode - Ridiculously easy compared to other difficulties. On this difficulty, the bosses have 50% health and you get a turbo shoot button. There are also ez-blocks which makes the levels a lot easier than they would normally be.
Totally Average-mode - More save points and normal boss health.
Hardon-mode - Normal save points and normal boss health.
You're gonna get raped-mode - 200% boss health and only 1 save before and after each boss. This is only for insane people.
12 worlds.
12 bosses.
Hours and hours of gameplay.
Secret items.
Lots of secret items can be obtained. Some of them can even be used to do funny random stuff in-game!
CDs that can play memorable songs ingame.

Megazell's Comment - Lots of fun. I fear this will be another game I can not end *one tear* but it will be blast trying :) There are a lot of FREEWARE and Indie game reference in this gem.

PlaPlaMaiMai is a clever puzzle game in which you play as a bespectacled scientist trapped in a series of laboratory rooms, filled with batteries and electrical plates that need to be powered up for the exit door to open. Players can climb steps that are no more than one block high, and a battery can only be picked up (using the space key) if you're standing next to it.

The cells are also magnetically charged, meaning that two stacked batteries will either attract or repel each other depending on their polarities. You can even use this effect to travel upwards in some rooms, provided that the professor is holding a battery that is of an opposite polarity to the one beneath him.

Liberated Games

23115971.jpg

Liberated Games is dedicated to cataloging all full commercial games that have been liberated and made free in playable form to the public.

There are two basic types of liberated games:

Source code, no data - These games have had their source code released, which means that the games can often be improved, fixed, and ported to new platforms. The prime examples of these are the games from id Software, like Doom and Quake, which were released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). With nearly every source release, the player must still purchase the assets, like graphics, models, sounds, and music, before playing the full game. This is often done by buying a used version of the game, or when available, a new version. Limited play may be available through the use of the data contained in a shareware version of the game.

Binary executable and data - These games have been released in binary-only form. The packages typically contain everything needed to play: the program, graphics, models, sounds, and music. However, because the source code is not available, these versions are limited to the original platform for which they were built. These games cannot be fixed, improved, or ported to new platforms.

There will naturally be some exceptions, and our definition will expand to include those new games and types of releases as they are made.

We neither condone nor engage in distributing games which are commonly called "Abandonware". We strive to respect the rights of the developers and publishers who retain the distribution rights of their works. Do not ask us about including games on the site that have not been liberated by the copyright owners.

We support the liberation of new games and encourage players to file information in our database about an older game which they recommend for liberation. If interest is high enough, we will attempt to work with developers and publishers to investigate the possibility of liberating the game for the benefit of the community.

Liberated Games was conceived and created by Matt Matthews and Marvin Malkowski Jr.

Thread Update

Made some changes to the ACTION section of the original post by adding an 'Action - SHUMP - Arena' section for games that fall into that genre. Previous games that were arena SHUMPs were located in the TOP DOWN section were moved to the new section.

Have to finish the updates for the bottom link for many of games on pages 36 and up. Will get around to it soon.

Upgraded Soul Of Dracula to TOP PICK. The game is just so well made and some of the challenges in it will bring a frustrated smile to fans of the Castlevania series.

Downgraded Castlevania - The Bloodletting due to the bugs but I believe this game is still worth playing for the boss fights and final battle alone.

Enjoy.

Madness

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Horror

Madness is a 2010 seven-day roguelike about darkness and insanity.

Megazell's Comment - I use to not like games like this but I have found myself seeing the error of my ways and playing many of these games more and more...very surprised how deep and fun they are without being overly taxing on time like many other RPGs.

Running under Windows - run madness.exe.
If you get a "MSVCR90.dll not found" error, you need the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (2.6 MB). This is a Python runtime's dependency.

ro9

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

The objective of this game is to ascend as many of your 9 rogues as possible.

* Arrow keys move forward/left/right. Space to stand still.

* There are 9 dungeon levels. The color key at the bottom-right reminds you how deep each rogue is.

* There are 3 monster types per level. The humanoids are easy. The animals/creatures are hard. The bosses are hardest.

* Only one boss exists per level per rogue. Bosses drop an ankh when killed. The ankh will resurrect any other rogue that died on the same dungeon level.

* Aim for roughly 1 XP level per dungeon level. Gaining an XP level restores all your health.

* Don't try to run away from tigers.

edit: forget to mention the secret which will no longer be a secret once I mention it: press '9' on the main menu for sillyness.

Tardis Remakes

25393282.jpg

For me, it all started in the late seventies with Pong and Space Invaders and I’ve been hooked on arcade machines and various home computers ever since – starting with the ZX Spectrum in early 1983.

I love playing games and have always had a keen interrest in the technical side of things, so naturally I began to program my own games. Well, I started programming a lot of games – first in Basic, then in Z80 and 68000 assembler, but never actually finished any of them, so I lost interrest in it temporarily and didn’t attempt to make a game for the next 13 years.

In 2003 I got the urge to try and make games again, so an abandoned remake of Android 2 in 80×86 assembler was resurrected and rewritten in Blitz Basic and I got pretty far but it’s now on hold and will most likely not be finished.

In 2004 I joined a game-programming contest, and finished my first game, a remake of Sir Lancelot, as my entry in just 1½ month. The game was awarded the 11th place out of 76 submitted games. Not too bad for a first game.
More games have been completed since then, and several more are under development.

While you browse the games available on this site you may think “But…I don’t know any of those games” and there’s a chance you’re right. I try not to remake games that have been remade before…and the more obscure the better. Who needs another version of Arkanoid, PacMan or Space Invaders anyway – there’s so many excellent remakes already, so while my games may not be that well known at least they won’t drown in the masses of identical clones of other popular games.

…and that brings us to this website, my latest game and all my millions of plans for the future.

Destroy The Brain

Shooter/Arena
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Destroy the Brain is exactly the type of game you want to wake up to on a Monday morning - a quick and clever arena-style shooter that sees you removing parts from the spinning mass in an attempt to get as close as possible to the brain and destroy it.

The game was created by a group of students at the Anglia Ruskin University, during a 24-hour gamejam. Guns fire back at you, but you can't die - hence, they're meant as more of a hinderance to stop you from accomplishing your goal. The idea is to blow up the brain in the centre as fast as possible. I managed an almighty 82 seconds, which I'm sure some of you lot will utterly thrash. - IndieGames.com

Zero Ballistics

Simulation/Vehicular Comabt

Theme: Military

Zero Ballistics is a unique blend of multiplayer first person shooter and tank combat game. Easy to learn, difficult to master was our mantra during the development of the game. Set in lush alpine environments covering all seasons, playing Zero Ballistics is as thrilling as it is relaxing.

Beautiful, idyllic level settings meet armed to the teeth and highly detailed tanks. Combat is as intense as it gets with three different main and three different secondary weapons.

Mastering the main weapon's ballistic trajectory, judging the distances correctly and estimating the opponent's advance all add up to a demanding but nevertheless rewarding game experience hardly found anywhere else.

Explore 81 different tank setups to be ready for any given combat situation. If you want to be sneaky, use mines and the heal skill to wreak havoc among your unsuspecting enemies. You are more the frontal assault type? Combine the ram bucket and the flamethrower to eliminate your enemies up close and personal.

Tired of modes like capture the flag, control the fortress or similar well known game modes? Try our Beaconstrike mode that combines the best of all known worlds. It provides fast and easy gameplay but also a huge amount of team play and controlled action.
