Soldiers Are Dreamers

Adventure
Single Player - Yes

Netbook Friendly

Theme: Mystery

This is probably one for the crowd who loved The Graveyard. Soldiers are Dreamers is over in just a few minutes, and there’s no complex interaction to be found. Standing in a room, you simply click on various items, each of which giving you a new speck of information to add to the story that’s forming in your head.

It was built in Adventure Game Studio as part of a project exploring the topic of war in computer games. Despite its minimalist nature, the little glimpse you get of a family which was most probably torn apart by war is surprisingly touching.

It’s not for everyone, certainly. But if you’re into experimental or short-form games, and don’t mind not being able to shoot the enemy with a bunch of big bad guns, then this is worth checking out. - PCGamer.com

Megazell's Comment - This game has two different versions. One that works with Windows XP along with Vista and another for Windows 7. The 2nd link below will hold the XP/Vista version only.

Paper Plane was actually not what I was wanting, but it was unique! I'm basically wanting an arcadey flight game that just lets me fly around. Closest I've been able to find are budget air shooters, but that's not exactly free now, is it?

Still, thanks for the suggestion! Got me to try a game I wouldn't have, otherwise.

EDIT: Also, you mispelled "soldier" in "Soldiers are Dreamers"

Of Light & Shadow is one of those freeware games that could have easily been commercial offerings. It's beautiful, polished, brimming with ideas and the product of love of a sizable team. Oh, and it even comes with a proper introduction, though it wont last you that long.

The game, a 2.5D platformer with puzzle elements, has you playing as both Mr. Light and Dr. Shadow each with his unique abilities and weaknesses. The former is afraid of darkness and can jump around, whereas the latter gets burned by light but can walk on walls and ceilings, making for some interesting mechanics and some quality lighting visuals. - IndieGames.com

Sphere

Puzzle

Students at Enjmin have shared their first person trajectory transmission puzzler Sphere. Players control a worldly globe that hits switches and more importantly sets your travel trajectory using its bounce pattern.

Sphere plays in browsers with Unity installed or can be downloaded for Windows and Mac. The game controls well, but the sphere's collision detection while holding it seems odd (it goes through walls, but not when you throw it). The in-game art is clean, though I also like these warmer textures in what appears to be an earlier build.

Sphere's clever mechanics will hopefully bring further exploration of "trajectory transmission" with different objects and states of matter. - IndieGames.com

Thread Update.

Went through and reorganized some games so that they went into their proper genres.

Updated A LOT of games with new links, new videos and information like themes, gamepad support and gameplay time.

You'll notice that I downgraded the number of games listed from 1,845 to 1,828. My bot fritz on me during a call and I think there are less games than reported on the OP. Not sure yet as I'm writing a script to hit the thread and check. In any case, I rather report less and have more than report more and have less games actually in the thread.

As I said before labeling games is tough because so many of these things bleed into other genres that I get lost trying to figure out where to put them for others to find.

Also, I'm terribly sorry I did not respond to everyone's PM as of late but all of the suggestions and heads up to games is much appreciated just been swamped as of late and trying to enjoy the summer with the family ;)

Enjoy!

BubbleGUNN adds risk by dropping bonuses that you must shoot for more points.

I discovered a point milking condition, if you shoot the opponent rapidly. However, the enemies come too quickly in future waves to bother with this. My only suggestion for this game is aesthetic: replace the gun with a Bubble Bobble (-like) dragon head. - Indiegames.com

The build that's available to download is a single-player version of that party game, although you can still play it with a friend since the move and shoot keys are placed far apart from one another.

Your red spaceship loses a tiny bit of its tail whenever it collides with an enemy or a projectile (including yours), and players will be presented with the game over screen when the ship loses all of its armor completely. Don't Lose Your Head by Droqen (Fishbane, Probability 0) is a freeware 2D platformer that treads the same path as any other platformers before it - you have to help your on-screen character navigate a series of obstacle courses to reach the glowing object at the end of each level, all the while trying to avoid spikes, falling mines and deadly projectiles shot out of bug-eyed orbs.

Some stages can be frustrating to play through at times, so it's fortunate that the Alex had allowed players to use as many lives as they need to complete the game. It only takes a minute or two to clear a level, but you will definitely need at least a couple of attempts before you can succeed at your task. - Indiegames.com

The Haunted Ruins is a first-person maze exploration game with RPG elements, created in the style of the classic Advanced Dungeons and Dragons releases like Dungeon Master and the Eye of the Beholder series. Defeating enemies in the dungeon rewards you with experience points, and your hero automatically levels up whenever a certain amount of EXP is reached.

Returning to town allows you to shop for food, bombs and poison antidotes, or you can pay the blacksmith a visit to upgrade your weapon and armor. There are three ways to restore health while you're in the dungeon - cast a healing spell (called Recov), eat a piece of meat or level up your character to receive full mana and health. By Friday, most of us start to feel a little glitchy. Imagine what a week in the battlefield would do to your brain. Pippin Barr superficially explores one soldier's glitchy breakdown in War Game, while tugging on the nostalgia strings with its handheld LCD aesthetic. Controls are pasted around the device, and players earn points by killing the opposition. Intermittently, players undergo psych evaluation. No matter what excuse is given, Barr confirmed to me, players are sent back to the field to fight a progressively glitchy war.

Barr blogs that the glitch effect he's going for wasn't meant to be too complicated. His goals were to mix up the sprite sheet for a particular element in the game and to break down the distinction between game modes by allowing them to overlap. Good luck playing this after several trips to the psych ward! - Indiegames.com

Inspired by Portal and VVVVVV, Thomas Hourdel describes his 7DFPS creation Flip'd as a first person switcher. Players pick up a limited amount of "ammo" that counts as chances to flip like Captain Viridian to get to the exit. I imagine the player is a robot or something water-averse, since it's the only true death I experienced.

That's not to say Flip'd isn't flippin' hard. Difficulty ramps up quite a bit by the third level. I managed to pass that only to find the fourth level too hard for my novice FPS skills. I also found that I didn't always equip the flip-ammo even if I walked near/through it. - Indiegames.com

Heck, to get my job here, I had to wrestle my predecessor to the death Star Trek style, which was actually harder than it sounds since my predecessor was a remarkably clever baboon who liked to go for the eyes. My point is, you've gotta be ready for anything, and Nitrome is going to help toughen you up for the world of employment with Office Trap, a modern snarky spin on Knight Trap.

If you want to keep your new job in this arcade platformer, you'll have to survive the Office of Doom, which means getting a certain number of employees to the helicopters at the end of each level. (Remember, there's no "I" in "TEAM"... but... there is a "ME", so... uh, nevermind.) Just use [WASD] or the [arrow] keys to run and jump and make your way up through the floors, avoiding all the typical office hazards (like toxic waste, buzz saws, low-res traps, and more) to reach safety. Getting to the helicopter is usually fairly simple, if hazardous, but snagging all the coins and stranded employees to boost your high score (imperative for your performance appraisal I'm sure) is the hard part. If you have a friend you can coerce to the keyboard, you can also indulge in a little multiplayer action.

While Office Trap's gameplay and concept are pretty familiar to anyone who played Knight Trap earlier this year, it avoids feeling like a lot of same ol', same ol' by providing not only a great new design, but a lot of traps and obstacles that are unique to this game. The low-res trap is particularly fiendish, since most everything on a floor becomes virtually unrecogniseable once it's activated. Seeing what else the game decides to throw at you is a great incentive to progress, especially since it's all rendered in Nitrome's signature pixel style. (Death by treadmill fireball incineration was never so cute.) It's still going to be hard to shake the sense of déjà-vu if you've played Knight Trap, and some traps are definitely a lot more frustrating than they are entertaining (I DEFY YOU, WATERFALL), but Office Trap has loads of charm and is more of that run-y, jump-y, turn-into-a-skeleton-y action fans will enjoy. Besides, it's important you get toughened up for the real world. If you can't crawl through a deluge, leap over fireballs, and snag the spring-loaded key, how are you ever going to use the copy room? - JayisGames.com

Skywire is one of their earlier releases. It's a simple idea and but works quite nicely. You have to navigate the wire (up = forward, down = back), while avoiding obstacles. Three hits and all your passengers will have taken a fall and it's a lost life. - Slumlord

In Seven Dimensions you play simultaneously in 7 dimensions. You don’t see a 7 dimensional space because that would be impossible to understand. Instead, the dimensions are conveniently distributed across 4 views.
The actual game is a puzzle FPS which tests your visual-spatial ability.

The game features 23 levels with a gradual learning curve. It can be quite hard, depending on your proficiency in spatial reasoning.
